What Is an Intentional Disciple? Forming Intentional Disciples in a Digital Age Katherine Coolidge

Intentional Disciple One who has made a conscious, deliberate choice to follow Jesus in the midst of his Church and to re-order one s life accordingly. Sherry A Weddell 4

Intentional Disciple An intentional disciple is a Catholic maximalist, not asking what the minimum is that must be done in order to be saved, but rather asking what can be done for the sake of the Kingdom of God. Bishop Hying, Gary, IN 5

A Word: Grace Favor Free Underserved help God gives us to respond to his call to become Children of God Adoptive sons and daughters Partakers In his divine nature Of eternal life CCC

God s grace: present and active at every threshold The preparation of man for the reception of grace is already a work of grace. CCC 2001 Even the urge to pray is a response to the grace of God. CCC

Remember God s grace is active in the seeker and those who journey with the seeker. Our role as we journey alongside To support To help them connect the dots To have the courage to Listen to the Holy Spirit Respond to the movement of grace in the seeker s life 14

Accompaniment at Trust Remember: trust may be Christian God Church Intellectual tradition 15

FORMED at Trust Goal: to pique curiosity WATCH list Examples Cosmic Origins: The Scientific Evidence for Creation From Nothing to Cosmos: God and Science Francis: The Pope of the Renewal 16

Accompaniment at Curiosity Remember: curiosity is still very passive. Their questions guide your choices. This is the stage at which one can pose a relationship with God. 17

FORMED at Curiosity Goal: to propose that a relationship with God is possible for them WATCH list KEY: Anonymity 18

FORMED at Curiosity Examples: The witness of a Christian Popieluszko: Freedom Is Within Us The Jeweller s Shop Life for Life: Maximilian Kolbe For you: answers to their questions Catholic Answers: Why God Still Matters, The Problem of Evil Did Jesus Really Rise from the Dead? OPENING THE WORD introduce the person of Jesus 19

After FORMED... then what? Take a page from Jesus s playbook Engage in Q & Q What do you think that means? Why do you think that stayed with you? Remember Do not douse a thimble of a question with a gallon of an answer! 20

Accompaniment at Openness Remember: openness is still passive open to the possibility of change. What you choose will depend upon what questions they may have. They may be open to attending a small group with you! 21

FORMED at Openness Goal: to propose that change is possible and good WATCH list Anonymity is still important STUDY list Explore systematically yet at arm s length 22

FORMED at Openness Examples: Happiness OPENING THE WORD CATHOLICISM especially Sessions 1, 2, 3 Prayer: A Surge of the Heart If they raise the issue of sin and evil: For you Catholic Answers: The Problem of Evil Powers and Dominions 23

After FORMED... then what? Right afterward, or grab a drink a day or two later Ask open-ended questions Not the time for teaching or elaborate explanations Connect them with other disciples whenever possible If open, explore possible changes Spend some time together in front of the Blessed Sacrament, encourage them also to go alone! 24

Accompaniment at Seeking Remember: seeking is active it is like dating with a purpose! Seekers seek to understand who Jesus is for them This is the threshold where they begin to wrestle with personal sin Spiritual warfare becomes intense: prayer with them and for them is crucial 25

FORMED at Seeking Goal: to answer their questions and help them make a decision STUDY list Choice will be driven by topic Echo, YDISCIPLE Lectio: Prayer For those wrestling with personal sin FORGIVEN (if they are already Christian) Who Am I to Judge? 26

Community is now important! Seekers need to hear the stories of disciples! They need to have ways to go with others to serve and worship. Remember: Seekers seek Jesus! Invite them to a seeker-friendly study group. 27

After FORMED... then what? Ask open-ended, clarifying questions Are they ready to drop their nets? If so, pray with them and celebrate! If not, what are the obstacles in their way? Can you help them? Catholic Answers videos may help you respond Do they need assistance from others? 28

Accompaniment: Intentional Discipleship Intentional Discipleship: different set of muscles Focus: Learning to live as a disciple What does Jesus want of me? Community support! 29

FORMED at Intentional Discipleship Goal: to grow as a disciple; to discover one s mission To grow in prayer 33 Days to Morning Glory Consoling the Heart of Jesus Lectio: Prayer YDisciple: Prayer To live as a disciple YDisciple: Living the Creed, Disciplines of a Disciple, Sacraments SYMBOLON, Echo 30
