He improved on the original icebox by putting cold air-ducts or holds in special areas to help the air circulate within the icebox in order to keep foods fresher. His invention also provided a special place to keep the drinking water and other drinks separate from the food. This avoided liquids picking up the flavors and smells of other foods.
11 Celebr ating Bl ack History Judy W. Reed received U.S. Patent No. 305,474, received September 23, 1884, for a hand-operated dough kneader and roller that allowed for improved mixing that was more evenly distributed when processed through the rollers with corrugated slates. Little is written about Reed's life, but she has garnered the title of being the first African-American woman to receive a U.S. patent.
12 Fa n n ie Lou Hamer Fannie Lou Hamer was born in 1917, the 20th child of Lou Ella and James Lee Townsend, sharecroppers east of the Mississippi Delta. She first joined her family in the cotton fields at the age of six. Although she managed to complete several years of school, by adolescence she was picking hundreds of pounds of cotton a day. In the early 1940s she married Perry Hamer, known as Pap, and worked alongside him at W.D. Marlow s plantation near Ruleville, in Sunflower County. Hamer s ability to read and write earned her the job of timekeeper, a less physically demanding and more prestigious job within the sharecropping system. Hamer dedicated her life to the fight for civil rights, working for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. This organization was comprised mostly of African-American students who engaged in acts of civil disobedience to fight racial segregation and injustice in the South. These acts often were met with violent responses by angry whites. During the course of her activist career, Hamer was threatened, arrested, beaten, and shot at. She was severely injured in 1963 in a Winona, Mississippi jail. She and two other activists were taken in by police after attending a training workshop. Hamer was beaten so badly that she suffered permanent kidney damage. In 1964, Hamer helped found the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, which was established in opposition to her state's all-white delegation to that year's Democratic convention. She brought the civil rights struggle in Mississippi to the attention of the entire nation during a televised session at the convention. The following year, Hamer ran for Congress in Mississippi, but was unsuccessful in her bid. Along with her political activism, Hamer worked to help the poor and families in need in her Mississippi community. She also set up organizations to increase business opportunities for minorities and to provide childcare and other family services. She helped establish the National Women's Political Caucus in 1971.
13 Thomas L. Jennings was the first African to receive a patent in the United States of America. On March 3, 1821 he secured US Patent 3306x for discovering a process called dry-scouring. Jennings lived in New York as a free man. He owned and operated tailoring and clothing cleaners business. Dry-scouring is a process he developed for cleaning clothing through a dry process instead of a wet process. Yes, the successful dry-cleaners can thank Mr. Jennings for his early innovation published to the world in Jennings used the profits secured from his patent to free members of his family who were still under slavery systems in some of the U.S. Jennings also used his wealth as a business man and inventor to financially support the abolition movement that was growing in many areas throughout the U.S. during his time. Shelby J. Davidson was born in Lexington, Kentucky in 1868 and graduated from Howard University and would read law and become admitted into the DC bar and Kentucky bar. Davidson became a government inventor and worked with the United States Treasury Department where he invented adding machine automations that increased the postal division's efficiency. Davidson received U.S. Patent No. 884,721 on April 14, 1908 for what is described as a paper-rewind mechanism for adding machines. In 1912, Davidson resigned with the government amid disputes arising from Davidson's rights to the adding machine. He practiced law and entered into the real estate market. Mel Streeter was born in Riverside, California in He attended the University of Oregon on a basketball scholarship and was the second African-American basketball player at Oregon after declining an offer by legendary basketball coach John Wooden to attend UCLA, because UCLA did not have an architecture program. Streeter graduated with a bachelor's degree in architecture in At the University of Oregon, Streeter was enrolled in the United States Army ROTC program. After serving as a second lieutenant in the transport unit at Ft. Lawton from 1955 to 1957, he stayed in Seattle to raise a family and tried finding work at local architectural firms. He struck out 22 times before he finally found work with Paul Hayden Kirk and Fred Bassetti. In 1967, Streeter opened the third black-owned architecture firm in Seattle. In the 1970s, he teamed with Paul Dermanis to form Streeter/Dermanis. By the early 1990s, the two partners had split and Streeter created Streeter & Associates Architects. The firm is known for projects such as Auburn City Hall, the Federal Aviation Administration Regional Headquarters and several buildings at Naval Station Everett. Some of the firm s community facilities include John Muir Elementary School, the Rainier Beach High School Performance Hall and the African American Academy. He also designed a 64-unit senior housing complex for Mount Zion Baptist Church and was part of the Safeco Field, Qwest Stadium, and SeaTac airport design teams. A pillar of the black community in Seattle, he was a Seattle Planning Commissioner. He was a founding member of the AIA Seattle Diversity Roundtable and the Tabor 100. He was active in the professional black men s organization, the Breakfast Group. As a black architect, Streeter opened doors for other architects of color and some of the city's best known architects. Mellody Hobson is the president of Ariel Investments (AI), which was founded in 1983 by John W. Rogers, Jr. With the continued growth of the African American middle class, the number of black investors has risen. Ariel Investments is one of the nation s few African American-owned investment companies that focuses primarily on the needs of those investors. Ariel s current assets sit at $10.1 billion. Hobson views stocks as the best channel to growing significant wealth for African Americans. Combining her knowledge of investments with her drive for bettering the black community, Hobson has been able to use her platform at Ariel to convey and promote these ideas. Because of her success at Ariel, Hobson is a regular guest contributor of financial advice at CBS News and The Tom Joyner Morning Show where she speaks on investor education, financial literacy, and the current economic trends affecting the general public. In addition, she also writes a financial advice column for Black Enterprise magazine. In 2009 Hobson produced and hosted a show on ABC Network called Un-Broke: What You Need to Know About Money. Hobson also serves as the director of the Estée Lauder Companies, Inc.; the Starbucks Corporation; and as chair of the board for DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc., the film production company of her husband, George Lucas. In 2015 Hobson was selected for inclusion on Time magazine s annual list of the one hundred most influential people in the world.
