St. John Vianney School News Orders for Christmas poinsettias and wreaths must be returned to school by Wednesday, November 24. They will be delivered on Monday, December 6. Students will attend a Thanksgiving Prayer Service on Wednesday, November 24, at 10 AM. Following the Prayer Service, students who attained Honor Roll status for the first marking period will be recognized. Dismissal will be at 11:30 AM, and no aftercare will be provided. Please be prompt when picking up your child. School will be closed on Thursday, November 25, and Friday, November 26. We wish all of our families a Happy Thanksgiving! On Friday, November 26, we will be hosting a reunion for all St. John Vianney School graduates from the 1968 through 2002 classes. It will be held from 4-7 PM in the Parish Center and cafeteria. Come meet old friends and teachers and see how the school has changed over the years. Light refreshments will be provided. Pre-School News Pre-School students will be having their Thanksgiving feasts on Monday, Nov. 22, and Tuesday, Nov. 23. On Wednesday, November 24, we will follow our half-day schedule. 3 Catechetical Program and more Christ the King The Feast we celebrate today on this 34 th Sunday in Ordinary Time is called Christ the King was established by Pope Pius XI in The Gospel we hear is Luke 23: Jesus is crucified between two criminals and insulted by Jewish leaders and Roman soldiers and one of the criminals. The inscription over his head, both his title and his crime, reads King of the Jews. Some of you may remember Fr. Bill Leonard who served in our parish some years ago. Although he died earlier this year, his love of sacred Scripture and the many insights he gleaned as he studied and prayed with Scripture live on. In his Scripture notes for the Feast of Christ the King, he wrote the following: King connotes monarchy, one ruler. There can be only one ruler in our life. We must get off our throne and allow Jesus to preside and predominate. We must move out of the master bedroom, the center of our hearts and lives and make room for the Lord. The two criminals show us the difference in attitudes toward life. The first one, hanging on his cross, in dire straits, still would not give up control. He continued to mock others, to object to the way things really are. To the bitter end he tried to manipulate others to get things to go his way, even when he knew they wouldn t. (Jesus was not coming down from the cross to save him on his terms.) He continued to be a gullible king, fooled by appearances. (This throneless Jesus looked more to him like a joker than a king.) The other criminal was finally ready to give up the ruse. He and his companion deserved what they were getting after all. He admits guilt and takes responsibility for his life. He is ready to surrender. But, to whom? (One of the things that prevents people from surrendering, giving up control of their lives, is that they haven t a clue who to surrender to.) There is Jesus. He surrenders to him. He de-thrones himself, no royal talk like the other fellow, only compassion for Jesus. He abdicates and not a moment too soon! Now, the point is: If a non-christian would be able to surrender to Jesus if given the chance, why is it that lifetime Christians cannot or do not? What is so great about our thrones, our kingdoms, that we will not surrender them? It is a good time for us to reflect on what the Kingdom and His Kingship means for us. To help with that reflection, let s consider the Opening Prayer from Mass. Almighty and merciful God, you break the power of evil and make all things new in your Son Jesus Christ, the King of the universe. May all in heaven and earth proclaim your glory and never cease to praise you. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. AMEN 2010 Christmas Pageant December 24, 2010 at 2:00 p.m The 2010 Christmas Pageant will be held on Friday, December 24, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. We invite all children in our parish, whether attending classes on Monday or Thursday evenings or coming every day to our school, to participate. We are looking for children for the choir, for narrator roles and for various speaking and non-speaking parts. The kids who participated in the pageant in prior years really enjoyed it. What a great Christmas present the pageant was for their family and friends! A number of the kids who participated last year have already asked about the Pageant for this year. In addition to the children we are hoping to get some adults to help with the practices. If you can help us out, please sign up as an adult volunteer. Sign-up will be held on Sunday, December 5 th after all Masses. The sign-up will give us a better idea of how many children are interested in participating. We will have table with a sign-up sheet in the Gathering Area. We are planning to have four evening rehearsals with the last rehearsal being a dress rehearsal. The dates and times for rehearsals will be available at the sign-up table. BISHOP S ANNUAL APPEAL Christ for One Another Many people are feeling the impact of these trying economic times. Yet, Christian stewardship invites us to trust to take a risk to share what we have with others in the confidence that our heavenly Father will provide us with all that we truly need. It is in this spirit that you are invited to make a sacrificial gift to help our Church meet the many pastoral, educational and charitable needs in our communities needs that are even greater in these challenging times. S-1872/A-2810 (known as the Opportunity Scholarship Act) offers opportunities for parents who might be unable to send their children to a Catholic school or another nonpublic school in New Jersey. In a series of questions and answers, the New Jersey Catholic Conference offers a response to misinformation that has been promulgated in many public forums. Q. Isn t the bill an attempt to destroy public education? A. Nothing could be further from the truth. Because not every school is right for every student, all of New Jersey s citizens benefit when the State makes efforts to preserve and enhance all educational options both public and nonpublic. In S-1872/A-2810, the difference between state aid paid to the district and the amount of the scholarship can be used for either an Education Innovation Fund (to spur reform in public education) or retained by the district depending upon which version of the legislation is ultimately enacted. In effect, districts would receive funding for students that are not enrolled. On Saturday, December 4 th, the Parent s Guild of Mother Seton Regional High School in Clark (GSP Exit 135) will sponsor a Craft Fair from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. 5 YOUTH MINISTRY Greetings and Blessings! Please allow me to explain a few items on your youth ministry schedule. There is a very special youth ministry meeting Sunday November 21 in the youth ministry office from 7:00pm to 8:30pm, don't miss out!!! Permission slips will be collected for both the Christmas Retreat Weekend and the Ski Trip weekend at this meeting. There is no Meeting on Sunday November 28th due to the Thanksgiving Holiday. Our next meeting will be Saturday December 5th. All permission slips for both the Christmas retreat weekend and the Ski Trip weekend are due by the December 5th meeting since there is no meeting on December 12th, (for professional development I am attending the National Conference for Catholic Youth Ministers) There will also be a mandatory parent meeting for those parents who have teens attending the Christmas Retreat Weekend on Sunday December 5th from 8:30 to 9:00pm in the office of Youth Ministry. Parents, you need to be aware of some programming dynamics that happen on this retreat so please attend. Remember, the Christmas Reteat Weekend is December 17, 18, and 19th and the Ski trip weekend is January 14,15, and 16.
