BUDGET OF THE CONGREGATION / ORGANIZATION Last fiscal year : 2013 Total budget for the last fiscal year Mission Support to the ELCA / synod for the last fiscal year Total debt of the congregation/ 1,329,825 organization at the end of the last $1,347,136 fiscal year $73,633 Total savings, reserves, endowment at the end of the last fiscal year $603, TRENDS IN THE COMMUNITY CONTEXT OF THE CONGREGATION OR ORGANIZATION Please give a short answer to the following questions. ( approx. 150 words maximum ) Characteristics Write a description of your community in terms of socio-economic status, demographics, primary areas of employment and lifestyle. The Demographic ZIP Code report ( available at ) for your primary ZIP codes may be helpful. Cedar Falls (CF) is located along the Cedar River and offers many recreational opportunities including state and county parks, nature reserves, a soccer complex, nationally-renowned bike trails, aquatic center, golf courses, and indoor recreation center. CF is a certified Blue Zones Community of 40,000 residents and home to the University of rthern Iowa (UNI) with 12,100 students and its performing arts and athletic facilities. The public school system is excellent, and Cedar Falls Utilities (CFU) offers low rates on utilities, including cable television and fiber optics. Median home price is $171,962. Home and business construction has been steady, and the economic downturn of 2008 had little impact. 94 of the adult population has a high school education or higher. Unemployment is low, and median income is $45,682. CF is surrounded by productive farmland. The area is home to several John Deere facilities. CF is adjacent to Waterloo, with 70,000 residents and more racial and economic diversity. Context List three ways that the community in which you are located has been challenged by change and transition in the last three to five years. The public school district is facing updating and expanding aging buildings, including a debate over whether to build a new high school and where. This challenge was exacerbated by two new school district superintendents in two years, and the closing of a K-12 lab school operated by UNI that caused an influx of students to the public schools. The closure of the lab school also caused a rift between some in the community and UNI and its president. Another challenge is rapid retail growth in the city's industrial park, leading to traffic flow problems and motor vehicle accidents. At UNI, the decline in funding from the state, and increases in tuition, are constant sources of concern for university faculty, staff and students. Trends List three changes or trends within the congregation or organization which have occurred in the last three to five years. ( If this profile is about a congregation, the Congregational Trend Report ( available at ) research may be helpful to you.) 1) Transition from Preschool-only ministry to combination Preschool and Childcare ministry. Public schools offering free preschool led to falling enrollment at St John Preschool and necessitated a change. Remodeling of kitchen and preschool rooms was necessary to offer programming. The cost added to the congregation debt. Transition has been successful in expanding ministry base. 2) Staff turnover. In the last year our Business Manager, contract Associate Pastor, Custodian, and Director of Music/Children's Programming retired. There have been excellent hires to replace these persons, but still in need of several part-time positions. Lay leaders have stepped up. 3) St John is in a transitionary period with youth leadership. After a number of years of weak programming, an intentional emphasis was made to strengthen Confirmation age ministry. In August 2013 we began transitioning to a model of ministry where young adult leaders (Lutheran Student Center and others), as well as other adults, are intentionally equipped (mentored) for youth ministry. We have made great progress expanding our youth participation. [ SR-902r ] Page 3 of 14

4 Programs Describe your congregation's or organization's current programs for mission and ministry. 1) Education: children's Sunday School and Wednesday night programming, Vacation Bible School, milestone ministries, 3-year confirmation program, junior high/high school fellowship and service opportunities, young adult (20-30-years old) Bible study, adult bible and book studies, Alpha Course. 2) Fellowship and building relationships within St John: Alpha, Wednesday evening meals, small group independent study, men's ministries, retreats, music opportunities (choirs, bell choir, holiday choirs, weekly worship music), Run for God, Explorers (55+). 3) Outreach: Preschool / Childcare, Vacation Bible School, children's carnival, Easter Egg Hunt, Lutheran Student Center at UNI, NE Iowa Food Bank, Salvation Army, Angel Tree, NewAldaya Lifescapes, Habitat for Humanity, support for international missionaries, Love INC of the Cedar Valley, Sole-ful Ministries, Operation Christmas Child, prayer shawls, Rosebud Reservation, House of Hope, American Red Cross blood drives, Lutheran Disaster Response, Back to School Project, Blue Zones Project and Habitat for Humanity. Goals If there is a Strategic Plan in place for the congregation or organization; what are the primary goals to which you are committed? 1) Equip members to live a "passionate and life-changing faith" in their daily lives. 2) Increase community outreach through service, events, and other public gatherings. 3) Continue to equip and develop staff. 4) Continue to challenge congregation to invite and equip people of all ages to be and become disciples of Jesus Christ. 5) Launched a capital campaign in February 2014 to raise $1.6 million to pay off mortgage, fund building and equipment improvements and support missions. 6) Equip congregation members to lead. Energy What is your congregation or organization really excited about right now? Preschool and Childcare Ministry Young Children's ministry New Junior and Senior High model of ministry Young Adult ministry in conjuntion with the Lutheran Student Center at University of rthern Iowa Increased Outreach Lead Staff formation Capital Appeal and Call Process Upcoming 150th Anniversary Blue Zones, Green Stewardship 3D Ministry equipping of leaders Partnership How does this congregation or organization see itself as a member and active participant in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the synod? 1) The congregation is committed to strong financial support of synod and churchwide ministries through basic mission support, as well as support for ELCA World Hunger, ELCA Global Mission and the ELCA Malaria Campaign. St. John also supports Riverside and Ewalu bible camps, Lutheran Services of Iowa and NewAldaya Lifescapes (senior housing and healthcare community). 2) The congregation has a strong sense of Lutheran identity and this identity causes it to value its affiliation with the ELCA. 3) St. John is in a partnership with Bethlehem Lutheran Church to support the ministry of the Lutheran Student Center on the campus of the University of rthern Iowa. 4)Participate in Conference and Synod Events. 5) Sponsoring community, synodical and other leadership events. 5 6. MINISTRY SITE CHARACTERISTICS PART II: OUR VISION FOR MISSION As you think of your congregation or organization and the way it tends to live out its corporate life and pursue its mission, what tends to characterize your life together? You may make only one selection in each of the comparisons below or you may leave the line blank if this item does not apply to your ministry site. NOTE: The small purple box in the lower-right corner of " " clears the entry for that line should you wish leave that response blank. AS A COMMUNITY We tend to be formal and programmatic. We have clearly defined goals and plans for our future. We are racially and economically diverse. We tend to be informal and spontaneous. We have no stated goals or plans. We are demographically homogeneous. OUR LEADERSHIP STYLE We welcome ideas that are provoking and challenging. We rely on our leaders for direction. We have learned how to use conflict constructively. We prefer ideas that are tried and true. We rely on group decision-making. We tend to perceive conflict as something destructive OUR PROGRAMMING Our facilities are often used by community groups. We train people to minister outside our walls. We focus on ideas and beliefs. Our facilities are only used for our activities. We train people to minister inside our walls. We focus on skills and action. OUR THEOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE We are obviously Lutheran in identity and practice. We participate in synod and ELCA activities. We focus on Biblical studies and doctrine. We are less obvious about our Lutheran heritage. We are not very active in the synod and ELCA. We focus on contemporary issues and topics. [ SR-902r ] Page 5 of 14

6 7. PURPOSE, GIFTEDNESS AND MISSION The mission of a congregation or organization is found at the intersection of its purpose, giftedness and context. That is, a clear sense of mission will grow directly out of an assessment of your identity and purpose, your resources and gifts, and your understanding of the needs and trends within your community. Please offer thoughtful responses to the following questions. ( Approximately 250 words maximum ) Purpose How does this congregation or organization understand its reason for being in light of God's call to mission and service? Who are you? Why are you here? ( You may wish to refer to your congregation's or organization's Mission or Vision statements. ) MISSION OF ST JOHN: "Inviting and equipping people of all ages to be and become disciples of Jesus Christ." VISION FOR MINISTRY OF ST JOHN: "Living and sharing a life changing and passionate faith in Jesus Christ." OBJECTIVES: As a community we focus our resources, hope and prayers on: 1. Worshiping together 2. Being and Becoming 3. Discovering and releasing the gifts of the Holy Spirit 4. Celebrating Life Together Giftedness What are your gifts and resources for fulfilling this purpose? What are the congregation's or organization's top three assets and how are they being used? Are there obstacles that must be overcome to be able to use these gifts and accomplish the mission? Assets: 1) The congregation is mission and vision centered. The Church Council is focused on the future while a healthy lead staff team focuses on day-to-day ministry. 2) The membership base is largely children and adults in the age range. This has led the congregation to an expanded preschool/childcare ministry, a renewed emphasis on children's ministry via Sunday School and Kindermusik. 3) Increased Young Adult Ministry has resulted in leaders from Lutheran Student Center at UNI in our youth ministry, and new ministry to young adults. Obstacles. 1) Lack of space and facilities to accomodate an expanded preschool and childcare ministry. Renovations to address this need were completed in ) We experienced a large turnover of key staff over the past year and have used this opportunity to build a highfunctioning lead staff team. 3) We have challenges with aligning financial resources with our mission, but are addressing this through forthright emphasis on stewardship and the three-year capital campaign. [ SR-902r ] Page 6 of 14

7 Mission In light of the way you have described your ministry context in this Ministry Site Profile, what are the top three mission priorities which, if accomplished, hold the most promise for the continued development of this ministry? 1) Welcoming and Empowering Members. St John recently completed the US Congregation Life Survey. It indicated members are yearning for a sense of belonging, and that they are not being fully empowered to use their skills. According to the survey, 34 of respondents felt their sense of belonging in the congregation is strong and growing. 14 felt the congregation's leaders encourage them to find and use their gifts to a great extent. These two things go hand-in-hand: people will feel more of a sense of belonging if they feel they are contributing to the group and using their skills for the greater good. We need to increase our emphasis on equipping and encouraging people to invest their time and resources into the congregation. 2) Children and Youth Ministries. This has been gaining traction. The survey indicated 59 of respondents were satisfied with offerings to children and youth, indicating room for improvement. 3) Offering Opportunities for Members to Explore and Expand their faith. The survey indicated 83 of respondents feel their spiritual needs are being met. However, 49 of respondents are not involved in St. John group activities. There appears to be an opportunity to offer educational and faith-sharing opportunities for people. 8.
