5 FOCUS by Dr. Mrs. Navamani E. Peter 200 Years of God's Faithfulness Two hundred years of God's faithfulness to the Bible Society of India was celebrated from February 2010 to February We continue to remember with gratitude the British and Foreign Bible Society which had the vision to establish the Bible Society in India. We are also grateful to the United Bible Societies, many Church denominations and individuals who continue to provide the needed resources for the work of the Bible Society of India. We continue to celebrate the work of the Bible Society of India at the Central Office, Auxiliaries and Branches. We thank God for a host of volunteers who have faithfully worked to reach out to the people in remote corners of India. The last 200 years have brought many changes in India. From a colony of the British Empire, India has become an Independent Republic. There have been period of political and social as well as religious turmoil. The Christian church has also faced many challenges in the proclamation of the Gospel. It is in the midst of these situations that the Bible Society of India has been faithful to its calling. India is a large country with many languages and dialects. Providing Scriptures to people in different languages is not an easy task. Languages also undergo change. Each generation needs the Scriptures in the language people understand. We are glad that the BSI has been sensitive to their needs. Recruiting scholars who are able to give time for the work of translation has also been an immense challenge. We are grateful that many scholars and volunteers have come forward dedicating themselves for the cause of translation, production, distribution of the Bible and raising contributions for the Bible cause. People working in the Bible Society of India, partners in the churches and volunteers have also promoted the cause of literacy so that people can not only own a copy of the Bible but also read, understand and apply its message. As we look back and remember the events that took place in the Bible Society of India, we are indeed made to praise our heavenly Father for His goodness, mercy and faithfulness. There were pleasant and difficult situations, joys and sorrows, achievements and failures, as well as great rejoicing. We are grateful to God and God's people for the achievements of the Bible Society of India. We thank God for all those who gave leadership to the Bible Society of India. We thank them for their faithful service to the Bible Society of India. We remember the leadership of our former Presidents, namely, Rt. Rev. V. S. Azariah, Mr. Dewan Bahadur K. Matthan, Rt. Rev. C. K. Jacob, Mr. J. S. S. Malelu, Most. Rev. H. C. J. de Mel, Most Rev. Eric Nasir (Interim), Most Rev. Dr. Alexander Mar Thoma, Most Rev. R. S. Bhandare, Most Rev. Dr. P. Victor Premsagar, Prof. Ravikant Kant (Acting), Rev. Dr. Robert R. Cunville and Most Rev. Dr. K. J. Samuel. We also thank God for the former Vice-Presidents, Treasurers and Members of the BSI Council, and their faithful service. We remember with gratitude to God, the wonderful services rendered by the former General Secretaries, namely, Rev. J. S. M. Hooper, Rev. G. Sinker, Mr. P. Mahanty, Miss M.S. Harrison (Acting), Rev. W. Park Rankin (Acting), Rev. Dr. A. E. Inbanathan, Maj. Gen. O. M. Mani (Hon.), Mr. T. Albert Manoraj (Contract), Mr. T. John Ramakrishnan (Contract) and Dr. Bidyut Kumar Pramanik. The Psalmist says, "O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together" in Psalm 34:3. As we remember God's faithfulness to the Bible Movement in India, let us continue to magnify the Lord and bring glory to His holy name. God sent His only begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, as per His divine promise, in order to bring redemption to the world. The risen Lord who fulfilled God's promise is with us and He will guide us to move forward as the Bible Society of India. God's Word is a lamp to our feet and a light for our path (Psalm 119:105). God has given us many promises in His Word and, as we continue to look to Him, fear Him and experience His grace, He will surely bless us in the new century. Dr. Navamani E. 6 WORD STUDY adapted by Dr. E. L. Manasseh NEW TESTAMENT WORDS IN TODAY'S LANGUAGE DISCIPLE MEANING Disciple is a word which Jesus attached to His followers. It is a translation of the Greek word mathetes. It comes from the root manathano meaning "I learn." So a disciple is a learner. The Greek root is seen in our word "mathematics." In essence, then, a disciple is one who learns from another person. The emphasis on discipleship in Greek is not formal school learning, but rather fellowship with the teacher. It is seen in two situations. First, it refers to the followers of a certain philosopher. They derived not just information from their teacher but also inspiration. Disciples learned the teacher's entire outlook on life, not just the facts which he taught. Second, discipleship had a religious context. It was seen in the pre-christian mystery religions and in the Greek schools of the Epicureans and Stoics. Discipleship involved two principles. First, it meant that the disciples had fellowship with their teacher. They lived with him as Jesus' disciples lived with Him. Second, disciples carried on the tradition of their teacher. After he died they taught the same things that he did. Disciples were the main means of perpetuating teaching in the ancient world, since many great teachers did not write books. BIBLE USAGE The most important use of the word 'disciple' refers to Jesus. His disciples were collectively called the Twelve. They were also known as Apostles. He empowered them and sent them out to preach and heal (Matthew 10:1; 11:1). They were with Him day in and day out, so that sometimes they had to eat on the run (Matthew 12:1). Jesus had little time without His disciples, because they followed Him nearly everywhere He went (Mark 6:1). They were sometimes contrasted with the Pharisees' followers (Matthew 15:1-2). Because the disciples of Jesus were learners, they sometimes failed. They did not always comprehend Jesus' sayings (Mark 5:31; 10:24; Luke 8:9). Neither did they realize Jesus' power (Mark 8:27), or use the power that was theirs (Mark 9:14-18). Despite their inadequacies, the disciples were chosen by the Lord to carry on His earthly ministry. In fact, they were charged with the task of making disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). They were not only told to preach the Gospel (Mark 16:15), but also to produce disciples as Jesus had done. A second group of disciples in the New Testament was the disciples of John the Baptist. As soon as Jesus appeared, some of John's disciples followed Jesus (John 1:35-37). There is no hint of jealousy on John's part, and Jesus assumed that this transfer of allegiance was completely normal. The disciples of John were more rigorous than those of Jesus, as John's disciples fasted regularly (Matthew 9:14; Mark 2:18). They remained true to John the Baptist after he was imprisoned (Matthew 1:2). They also cared for the burial of John after Herod beheaded him (Matthew 14:12). Faithful Jews considered themselves to be disciples of Moses (John 9:28). However, Jesus pointed out that true disciples of Moses also followed Him. Some Jews even became disciples of Pharisees (Matthew 22:15-16). In the Book of Acts, the early church is called collectively "disciples." Their number increased markedly after Pentecost, and this put pressure on the relief work of the church (Acts 6:1). After Saul of Tarsus' Damascus Road conversion, he was received into the fellowship of the disciples (Acts 9:19). At Antioch the disciples were given a new name, that of "Christians" (Acts 11:26). They were noted for the joy which they exhibited to all (Acts 13:52). Throughout New Testament times the followers of Jesus were seen as disciples. This term extended to embrace all who believed in Him. It was not limited to those who had known Jesus during His earthly life, 4 / Sowing Circle / January June 2011

7 WORD STUDY but rather it referred to all who comprised the true church. ILLUSTRATIONS The speaker asked, "Tell me what comes to your mind when you hear the word, 'Disciple', while addressing a Christian youth group, in a certain city in India. Most of them said 'Following a guru or a teacher or a leader'. At the end of the seminar, the young people made a commitment to follow the risen Lord Jesus Christ! In a workshop on "Equipping and Empowering School Drop-out Girls" conducted by the Bible Society of India, the resource leader had a brain-storming session with the volunteers on "Discipleship". Several answers suggested that true disciples are those who know how to apply what they learn, to daily life. Some of them referred to the gospel according to St. John 8:31, where the Lord Himself declares, "If you abide in My Word, then you are truly My disciples." Testimonies of some widows who have been empowered by the BSI project "Empowering Widows and Suffering Women of India", show that discipleship is communication of life. These widows have been able to multiply disciples of Christ, in their own contexts. For example, Jaya says, "I used to cry and ask God 'Why did you make me a widow? It is better to die than to live as a young widow'. Exposition of God's Word and testimonies of widows helped me to change my attitude. God's Word has truly been a light unto my feet and a lamp unto my path. Truly, nothing is too hard for the Lord. God fulfills every promise. He uses me, even me, a widow, to make people, the disciples of Christ, as I follow Him daily, by His grace". Selected from the writings of Wayne A. Detzler and Adapted by Dr. E. L. 8 FEATURE : The Bicentenary Celebrations THE BICENTENARY CELEBRATIONS GOD'S WORD: TRANSFORMING LIFE THE HOLY BIBLE IS GOD'S WORD The Holy Bible is God's Word. Providing God's Word to God's world has been the watchword of the Bible Society Movement over the past two centuries. Thus, the Holy Bible has been translated, produced and distributed all over the world. The Bible claims that God is its ultimate Author. Written in three different languages namely, Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, over a period of 1400 to 1800 years by more than 40 different human authors, the Holy Bible has one theme God's plan of salvation for humankind. There is one central person on whom the whole book is focused - the Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Bible was the first ever printed book in many of the world's languages. The Bible is the most circulated, read and cherished book all over the world. At least a portion of it is available in about 2500 languages around the world. The whole Bible is available in about 1000 languages spoken around the world. A total of 3000 million Scripture items were distributed around the world in THE BIBLE SOCIETY: A MOVEMENT OF GOD The Bible Society, like any other movement of God, had a humble beginning. A teenage Welsh girl named Mary Jones was probably the reason (humanly speaking) for the Holy Bible that we have in our own languages today. This young girl's love for the Lord Jesus Christ, the Word of God and people, resulted in the worldwide movement that produces Bibles in hundreds of languages for millions of people around the world. A group of people moved by her story decided to do whatever possible to make the Word of God available to as many people as possible. Out of this, was born the British and Foreign Bible Society at a small gathering in London on 7th March 1804 which became the parent body of the Bible Society movement around the world. Ever since, the Bible Societies have been committed to making the Holy Bible available to Mary Jones people in languages they understand best, in formats they appreciate and at prices they can afford. THE TWO CENTURIES OF THE BIBLE SOCIETY OF INDIA The Bible Society movement started in India as an extended work of the British and Foreign Bible Society on 21st February 1811 at Calcutta (now Kolkata). The Bible Society of India with its Head Quarters at Bangalore, extended its work by opening Auxiliary Offices all over the country. Today, through a network of fifteen Auxiliaries, a Promotional Centre at Andaman and Nicobar Islands, one Translations Center at Shillong and Head Quarters in Bangalore, the BSI serves the Church and Society as well as its affiliated organizations with a vision to make the Holy Bible available to all people in India. The Bible Society of India is a national, autonomous and independent body. It is a member society of the United Bible Societies (UBS). The 6 / Sowing Circle / January June 2011

45 ANNUAL REPORT 2010 PRODUCTION The Production Department is responsible for procurement of raw materials, selection of printers to print, bind the Scriptures and delivery of Scripture items to the Auxiliaries and Customers. The demand for better quality Scripture items has been increasing steadily. Added to this was the demand for new varieties of Scriptures. During the year 2010 we focussed our efforts on developing new varieties and improving the quality of Bible products. We introduced Bibles using better quality paper and providing them with silver and gold gilding instead of red colour. Commemorating the two hundred years of the ministry of the BSI we introduced Giant Pulpit Bibles in six languages with gilt edging and Hard Bound binding with PVC cover jacket and a gift box. These Bibles are specially made to be kept in the pulpits of local Churches. These very large Bibles have been designed and introduced for the first time in India. These Bibles are well accepted by Churches of all denominations. The demand for smaller size and sleek Bibles are also on the increase. The Translations Department is working on many translation projects. Some are first time translations and some are revisions. As and when the project is completed the Production Department undertakes publishing of the Scripture items. These are known as 'new Scripture items'. Thus we produced 14 new Scripture items during the year They are as follows: 3 First time Bibles 9 First time New Testaments. 1 First time Portion 1 First time New Reader Portion (NRP) During the year 2010 we produced more than 1.5 million Bibles and 1 million New Testaments. We are thankful to the Lord for enabling us in achieving the aim of producing good quality Scripture well in time. (Reported by Dr. A.M. Prabakaran, Director of Production Department) MARKETING The year 2010 was a year of great success for the Marketing Department of the Bible Society of India. For the first time in its 200 years history we distributed close to 2 million Bibles and surpassed the targeted budget figures in every category of God's Holy Word that we produced. The Scripture distribution done during 2010 was as follows: Particulars Achievement Percentage Bibles 1,918, New Testaments 1,549, Portions 812, New Reader Portion 794, Selection 17,489, New Reader Selection 1,535, Total 24,099, The year also saw a stupendous growth in the distribution of the recently released English Standard Version Bibles and ESV Study Bible. The ESV Study Bible had obtained the distinction as the "Best Selling Book of all Time". Further, this study Bible was also awarded the recognition as the "Christian Book of the Year". Many conservative Churches in our country which have been using Bibles of other versions for decades have now switched over to ESV in the worship service - a proof of the acceptance of the ESV Bible as the most accurate and authentic version in the English language.we also released and successfully sold all copies of the ESV Hindi and ESV Telugu Parallel Bibles that we had produced. During the year we were able to supply a considerable quantity of Scriptures to many orphanages in the country, to students and youth, prison inmates, victims of natural calamities and most important of all to the victims of ethnic violence and persecution against Christians and believers who have placed their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. The ministry among our Christian Hospitals also proved to be a source of blessing to this target audience and to millions of other categories as indicated above. (Reported by Mr. W.R. Paulraj, Director of Marketing Department) Sowing Circle / January June 2011 / 43

48 ANNUAL REPORT 2010 COMPUTERS DEPARTMENT The Computers Department handles databases, data communication and the BSI Website. Computers are used in the Bible Society as Management Tools. Production process monitoring, up-to-date informing of Scripture distribution and Financial Accounting are all now done through the programmes using computers. Staff are trained in operating the programs. All the Auxiliaries and the Shillong Translations Centre are connected through Internet and this facilitates regular exchange of data. All the Auxiliaries and the Shillong Translations Centre can approach the file server in the Central Office through internet. This fileserver is the link for Computers in Auxiliaries, Central Office and Warehouse (Bangalore). We have a Storage Server, where all the archives of published Bibles are stored. The BSI website is updated once a week. We are grateful to God for all His grace and mercies during the past year in providing us the needed facilities. Kindly pray that through these facilities and support provided, the activities of the Bible Society of India could be achieved more efficiently, to bring glory and honour to His name. (Reported by Dr. A.M. Prabakaran, Director of Computers Department) AUDIO VISUAL MEDIA The Audio Visual & Media (AVM) Department provides the Word of God in Audio and Video forms. Although many people prefer the printed Scriptures, because of illiteracy and the paradigm shift from reading to non-reading there is a great demand for the Audio Visual Scriptures. In this scenario the AVM Department has more opportunity to reach out to people with the audio visual Scriptures. In the year 2010 we had the opportunity to provide audio Scriptures to people speaking the following languages: Bhilodi, Hindi and Mizo. Production and distribution of these audio Scriptures gave us opportunity to work in partnership with organisations such as FMPB (Friends Missionary Prayer Band), FCBH (Faith Comes By Hearing), Shalom Ministries, Share Love Mission, Himalayan Inland Mission (HIM), International Mission Board (IMB), Friends of Garhwal, Baptist Mandali Samilani, Kuvi Literature Committee and Adi Baptist Union. "Nitya Vakyam", a Telugu Radio Bible Programme was broadcasted 6 days a week through Trans World Radio throughout the year 2010 for the people of Andhra Pradesh. Apart from the production and distribution of audio video Scriptures and Radio Bible Programmes, we also supported the once a week Televsion programme in the Oriya language titled "Asharo Aloko" which became a source of blessing to many Oriya viewers. Viewers from Bhubaneshwar, Cuttack, Puri, Balesore, Khurda, Jatni, Paradeep, Rourkela, Sambalpur, Berhampur, Anugul, Paralakhemundi, Phulbani, Rayagada and Jeypore have expressed their happiness, prayer requests and desire to know more about the Lord Jesus Christ through their response letters and phone calls. (Reported by Dr. A.M. Prabakaran, Director of Audio Visual Media) SPECIAL AUDIENCE BRAILLE Mission Agencies and the churches in India, working among the visually impaired, look to the Bible Society for all their Braille Scripture needs.
