3 April 30,2017 Acts 2:14, peter 1:17-21 Luke 24:13-35 The life of our parish is guided by the parish mission which is to educate, form and transform persons into disciples of Christ and to foster their active participation in the life, work and mission of the Church. All parishes are called to be schools of discipleship assisting the People of God with the ongoing life long conversion required to be followers of Jesus Christ. It is in our parishes, families and in the world that we are living witnesses to Christ s love and the faith we profess. Discipleship is our invitation to continue Christ s saving mission here and now and through generous stewardship change the world! Are you new to the area or new to St. Rose of Lima? We invite you to consider enrolling in our wonderful parish. Fill out the form in the brochure in the church titled Gathered and Sent and drop completed form into the offertory collection, mail to the rectory, call Joan Schultz at or You will be contacted to set-up a new member meeting. The meetings are held in the rectory on Sunday mornings at either 10am or 12pm. Stewardship Reflection for Third Sunday of Easter April 29/30: As today s gospel reveals, the first meal shared with the risen Lord happened in a place called Emmaus. Perhaps there is no better time to reflect on this story than in those prayerful moments at Mass when we return to our place after receiving Holy Communion. Those few moments give us an opportunity to reflect on our stewardship of Christ s presence within us. We have a chance to practice hospitality by inviting Jesus into our hearts to walk and talk with us about our own Emmaus journey. We can relive once again the time when he broke bread for the disciples. And just as they did, we too can recognize Christ in this meal we have just shared with others. Monthly Food Collection This Weekend April 29/30 Donations to food pantries and food banks throughout New Jersey are down 30 percent, while requests for food have increased 20 percent. Demand for food is rising dramatically and shelves are emptying quickly at the 75 food pantries served by Catholic Charities Emergency Food and Nutrition Network. Now more than ever, EFNN needs your support. Donations help feed the most vulnerable and helpless among us the working poor, senior citizens, children living in poverty and families struggling to make ends meet. Last year, EFNN provided food for more than 50,000 hungry men, women and children. Your help can put food on the table and bring hope back into the lives of our brothers and sisters facing difficult times. Suggested Menu Items Breakfast Lunch Dinner Cereals, hot or cold Soup, canned or dry Canned stews Canned fruit Pasta products Rice Fruit juices Pudding or Jell-O Canned meats Pancake mix Tuna fish and vegetables Powdered milk Coffee or tea Please leave your donations this weekend April 29th and 30th, in the marked blue van in the Church parking lot. On behalf of those helped by the EFNN, thank you for your support.

5 The Science of Coun ng Blessings By Steve Foran Social scientists are finally catching on to something that Christian stewards have known for centuries, namely: gratitude is beneficial to us as individuals and as a society. In fact, the results of ongoing gratitude research show promise in overcoming the real world challenges in building more vibrant communities and parishes. The real world is often seen as the lives, had greater expectations and optimism for the coming week, had fewer symptoms of physical illness, spent more time exercising and were more likely to have helped someone. There is a simple gold nugget in the research that reinforces the importance of Christian stewardship: Counting our blessings helps us live out our baptismal call as Christian disciples in a more vibrant and life-giving way. It is unlikely that the research comes as a surprise to anyone who embraces stewardship as a way of life, but how many of us actually take the time to write down our blessings each and every day? In the spirit of the Easter season, I offer this place where we suffer lack of funding, too few resources, attitudes of indifference towards the church... the list goes on and on. Regardless of the positive steps that parishes may undertake, unfortunately, people can remain fixated on a problem which often leads to a downward spiral. The solution to the real world challenges is Christian stewardship which is now backed by scientific evidence. Researchers have found that if people simply count their blessings instead of their burdens, it increases their overall wellbeing. The research has concluded that those who recorded their blessings felt better about their simple two-part challenge in the hopes it will further renew your attitude and enliven your spirit. Part one... each day write down three things for which you are grateful. You will successfully make this a habit if you find a time (morning, evening, lunch) and a place (in a journal, on your office calendar) that works for you. What you record is too good to keep to yourself, which leads to part two... at some point during the day, as part of a regular conversation, share what you wrote with someone else. Make a conversation of it by asking the other person what they are grateful for and why. This is very

6 Do you know anyone who is homebound and unable to get to Mass? Recovering from a hospitalization or illness? Our Justin Ministers are specifically trained to visit those who cannot be with us to share the Sunday Gospel, hear about the homily, pray with someone on behalf of our community and receive Communion. If you, or a family member or neighbor, would like a visit, either temporarily or indefinitely, please contact the parish office at HOSPITAL VISITATION: We are dedicated to visiting the sick because Jesus has shown us that our presence to them is not simply comforting but healing. Hospitals in recent years have been forced to carefully monitor visits by non-family members. Clergy, therefore, are welcome but must know beforehand, who is currently being treated in a hospital or other healthcare facility. Therefore, please notify us when a member of your family is currently or shortly will be hospitalized or in another healthcare facility so that we can be a familiar presence to them during their stay in a local hospital, rehab center or nursing home. Please call the parish office at and leave the name and location of your family member. Sharing God s Blessings Archdiocesan Annual Appeal: Pledge envelopes and information on this year s appeal can be found in the vestibule of the church. Please consider making your gift to support the many vital programs and ministries of the Archdiocese of Newark. You can make a one-time gift or a pledge which can be redeemed over the next year. Completed pledge envelopes can be returned in the offertory collection, mailed to the parish office or dropped off at the Devine Center. If you have any questions, please contact Joan Schultz at Save the Date: Stewardship Day is coming! Saturday, June 3, 2017 Stay tuned for more details
