Welcome Message On behalf of the Canadian Gospel Music Celebration board, staff and volunteers, we want to extend a heartfelt welcome to everyone who has come to celebrate the power of the Gospel. After many months of prayerful preparation we are together once again to experience an outpouring of blessing and spiritual renewal. Jesus Never Fails we think it, read about it, and for most folks, believe it. Power and action comes to this special phrase when we say with conviction, Jesus Never Fails out loud. It sounds like an elementary approach but it does bring a spiritual lift when we talk to the Lord. God s promises come alive when we make it known to Him that we believe His word. John 3:16 makes it very clear and the promises hold great potential to all who believe. Once again, this year Canada s Gospel Music Celebration boldly stands to give testimony without compromise to the life changing truth of the Bible. We are called to spread the good news of the Gospel as is. God promises that no one should perish. As we gather again this year to enjoy some of the best music this side of heaven, the message will be clear. You can t miss it. We plan to have a great time together and return home changed. Holding to the line of a Gospel Music Celebration, we will be more than just be entertained. Our office feels led to avoid compromise of content to avoid blurring the message and the charge we have been given to preach the Gospel. We are ministry driven and stand on the promise that Jesus Never Fails. Often referred to as an Uptown Camp Meeting, our goal for these exciting three days is to restore, refresh, and encourage everyone in their walk with the Lord. This time together along with great Gospel Music will be a source of empowerment and direction in a world that can be very intimidating. CGMC has introduced some new faces this year. We know you will be blessed as we bring these changes to broaden our musical tastes. For the record, we will see the return to 2017 of some of your favourite groups. It s going to be great. What is obvious and helpful about this music is it teaches clearly how to have hope and what is referred to as an abundant life. Different styles will often bring a new look to the way we approach our needs. It is powerful the way that Harmony Music brings clarity to scriptural truths. You will be entertained, clap your hands and shout Amen once in a while as a message of truth touches your hearts. We are bombarded by conflicting messages that the medias of the world shamelessly force on society. It becomes very refreshing to sense and feel a heartfelt blessing as we praise the Lord together. Being a musician today isn t about being a salesman. This whole musical experience is not to sell a new brand of soap or runners to help you go faster. These talented musicians are more like firefighters or rescue workers. Their passion is to give therapy for the soul, much like a spiritual physical therapist who reaches our hearts to help get things lined up. Once in tune with the Lord, harmony becomes contagious. This year as in past years, our prayer is that July 7, 8, & 9, 2016 will be another spiritual refreshing. Better yet to someone not sure of their salvation, this will be the opportunity to get to know Christ in a deeper and committed way. n Go to Church n Pray for your Pastors n Read your Bible Daily n Talk to God often Blessings Gord Reimer & L.Wayne Dyck Canada s Gospel Music Celebration 3

Jesus Never Fails Words and Music by Gary Driskell Since we last met in Red Deer, it seems like our world has become more and more challenging: job losses, changes in health, loss of loved ones, broken relationships, unfulfilled dreams, disappointment with governments, and economic instability. But it s not a new story, it s the same story we ve lived for many years. There are always going to be people and things that fail us, that disappoint us, and that leave us asking why? Hebrews 13:8 tells us: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He won t disappoint us, He won t leave us, and He won t let us down, because Jesus never fails! This song was written over 30 years ago, but it is every bit as relevant today as it was in the 80 s. As we gather this weekend to once again hear the story of Jesus through the Word, and through Southern Gospel Music, be encouraged, encourage each other, and remember that Jesus Never Fails! Pat Goodberry So many souls have tested Him, throughout the course of time So many still reach out to Him with broken hearts and minds And every one of them will say, without exception that they find Jesus never fails Chorus Jesus never fails, Jesus never fails You might as well get thee behind me Satan, you cannot prevail Because Jesus never fails Sometimes this world brings trouble, I find so hard to bear I know I could not make it, without Jesus being there It s so encouraging to know, however deep we re in despair That Jesus never fails Tourism Red Deer is a rich resource of things to see and do and where to play and stay in and around Red Deer. We look forward to this event every year. Triumphant Quartet wants to reaffirm that their main focus is to Clayton, David, Eric, and Scotty keep God first in everything they do. The powerful combination of talent, commitment, and unwavering faith ensures that the years to come will bring even more success. The guys in Triumphant couldn t travel and sing without the help and support of their families back home. The Triumphant wives are a very vital part of this 14 Year ministry. triumphantquartet.com Banksons With over 30 years of concert music experience, Corrie (Hill) Bankson has traveled in a fulltime ministry with her family group The Singing Hills. In 2002, an Alabama guy, Kelton Bankson, joined this family group. Not long after, Kelton and Corrie were married and traveled full-time for 9 years with The Singing Hills. During that time, this young couple felt God calling them to pursue ministry together in the form of their own trio, and The Banksons came to be. For the past 5 years this trio (along with lead singer, Home base: Delburn, AB Started: November, 2011 Baritone: Kelton Bankson Tenor: Corrie (Hill) Bankson Dawn Loewen) have had the opportunity to sing at many concert venues and Gospel music events across Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and British Columbia. Starting in 2016, with Dawn Loewen stepping away from their group to fulfill family, and other ministry endeavors, they are now welcoming Landon Andrei to the team! With his strong lead voice, this singer adds a warmth and richness to the sound that is soothing to the ears and spirit. Their love of Gospel music, a desire to impact lives, and God s timing, are some of the elements that have drawn this Corrie, Kelton & Landon trio together. Like a song, with lyrics and melody in place, each note is being formed to bring three lives onto the same path for one purpose to present music to people in a way that glorifies God, and encourages the listener. The Banksons are excited to see where this music journey takes them! God holds the plan. Now their goal is to be faithful to follow wherever He leads! 10 On September 15, 2016, a much-loved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, took his final breath on earth and woke up to the glories of Heaven. Our great loss was Heaven s gain. Bill Griffin, whom we affectionately called Uncle Bill, was a faithful promoter of Southern Gospel Music, and along with his wife Marg ran Joyful Sound Concerts. Several years ago Bill wrote about his life story. After his passing, an epilogue was found on his computer while his book was being compiled. There are so many things we could write about this amazing man, but we felt his own words summed up his life better than we could ever say. (Excerpted from his Epilogue) It s late I check my watch almost 11:19. The large clock at the back of the auditorium seems to be ticking out the words pack it up, pack it up. Just a few short hours ago, the seats were full of appreciative people, applauding and enjoying the concert. But now everyone has gone home. As I sit on the stage steps and look out over the empty seats, my mind begins to wander, and I remember the many auditoriums I have been in over the years. I close my eyes, and listen to the silence of the place. All I can hear is that clock at the back and the steady rhythm of my heartbeat. It seems that I can relive hundreds of concert dates over and over in my mind. As I continue to sit there, I hear a loud snap, and the lights begin to dim row by row, until I am sitting, alone in the dark, with only the exit lights illuminating areas of the auditorium. I check my watch again 12:20 have I been sitting here for an hour? In a way, this sums up my life story. I am in my last years, and the old clock is ticking out pack it up, pack it up. It seems like just a few short hours ago that I was living what I have been writing about. The seats were full of people who helped me define who I am, who applauded me, and encouraged me to keep going, keep trusting, keep believing, and keep growing. And, like my memory of the auditoriums, I have been able to think back over my life and savor all the great memories, and blessings I have encountered along the way. All those many people in my life, who would not even know how they impacted me, have come alive again in my mind as I wrote about their contribution to my life s journey. As my years tick down, and the lights dim, I thank God for the great memories He has given. The lights will continue to dim, until it is dark and I enter the presence of my Heavenly Father. I don t know how many more years the Lord will grant me, but I do know that I am packing up all the great memories that I have, and I will continue to think of all my joys, my blessings and my sorrows. Writing about my life has enabled me to be reflective, contemplative and analytical. Who were the defining people that molded my personality? Was there a divine spirit leading and guiding my footsteps? As I have written each chapter of this book, I have been flooded with the assurance that my Heavenly Father has directed my paths. I have discovered the key to senior living is not new, profound, or unattainable. The key for me has been the recognition that my entire life has been directed by the Lord and that my life has been very good, satisfying, complete, and meaningful. I know that when you live by Proverbs 3:6, life will be rewarding, rich, full, and satisfying. I can say with the songwriter Larry Gaitlin: Greatly blessed, highly favoured, imperfect, yet forgiven, child of God. Bill Griffin Thank you Uncle Bill for your impact on our lives. You are forever loved, always remembered! Sue Krawchuk & Pat Goodberry 8 Canada s Gospel Music Celebration July 2016

It seems I always get the for the Gospel Music Celebration articles while I m running the sprayer. Today, it is roundup transorb HC, for those who care. This last year has had another change as Shannon and I had baby number 4 in September. If you have been to our concerts lately, you would have noticed my wife currently is not travelling with us when we minister. It s been a strange transition but we feel there is a lot at stake with raising kids. I m reminded of the story of Samuel and Eli and how Eli was judged very harshly for not keeping his sons in line with God s commandments. We get one chance at raising our children and I need God s help now, more than ever, especially in this age of technology and depleting moral standards. One thing I have learned in this life is that I do fail. Sometimes, miserably. There are times when my failures are small, such as, forgetting a grocery store item, or assuming I can still move like a teenager and ending up with two days of Robaxacet. Other times are not so small, where I argued with my wife or got upset with the kids and I want to rewind those minutes, take a do-over. Through it all, I am reminded of the countless, undeserved do-overs that Jesus gives me. Where I lack, he makes up for it. When I shorten my own fuse, he lengthens it by the power of His Holy Spirit and His unbelievable patience. I believe that we are all works in progress and God will never leave us. His Word CANNOT fail and it WILL NOT fail! As we are here, celebrating the Gospel, let s strive to help others in their failures, as Jesus has helped us in ours. Michael Daae The Daae Family Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (NIV) 10 Canada s Gospel Music Celebration July 2016

The Ball Brothers Artist Profile The Ball Brothers are two brothers, Andrew and Daniel Ball along with brother-in-law Chad McCloskey and newcomer, Matt Davis. The group travels worldwide, singing their distinctive brand of Christian music. When it comes to the Ball Brothers, forget what you know about other Gospel quartets. Because this unique group stands in stark contrast to many preconceived notions regarding traditional quartet music, the Ball Brothers have found life Home base: Started: 2006 Lead: Tenor: Baritone: Bass: Chickamauga, GA Daniel Ball Andrew Ball Chad McCloskey Matt Davis outside of the box. Tenor vocalist, Andrew, states, We re a younger group and we re a different kind of group. At first, it was a struggle trying to imitate other groups and fit into the proverbial Southern Gospel mold. We finally stopped apologizing for what we weren t and have embraced the uniqueness of our God-given voices and harmonies. Since then, our musical horizons have expanded, and our ministry has really taken off. The guys have a popular Facebook series called, Rollin with the Ball Brothers that offers an inside look into their ministry and lives on the road. It s their way of tearing down the divide Matt, Chad, Andrew & Daniel that sometimes separates us from our audience. We re interested in showing everyone how God can use normal people for His honour and glory, says Daniel. What can someone expect when they hear the Ball Brothers? A mix of musical styles, melted together by tight, four-part harmony. Each song is handpicked to be message-driven, and theologically sound. Their goal is to spread the message of the Gospel and encourage believers. theballbrothers.com Potter s Clay Potter s Clay is so pleased to be in Red Deer at this festival again this year. 14 A Timeless Truth There s a song that I ve heard sung probably hundreds of times throughout my relatively short life. Our church choir seemingly sang it so many times in my childhood that my sisters and I used to joke that it was our theme song. The arrangement was old- perhaps a little outdated, even back then, but the message in the song is completely timeless Jesus never fails (AMEN!). It has been years since our choir has sang that song, but I can still remember exactly what it sounded like sitting in my pew in our small auditorium. Of course I didn t realize it back then, but even before I could possibly comprehend what that song was talking about, the Lord was engraving it s message in my mind and on my heart. I didn t know what the phrase I know I could not make it without Jesus being there meant back then, but I sure do now. Even in the past 5 years God has taken myself, my family, my friends, even my church through some extremely difficult times, the details of which are not even relevant the result, however, is. The result proves to me that not only does God see every trial I go through that nothing takes Him by surprise but that He cares, and He will make a way out. I often wonder, as I m sure many believers do, how the rest of humanity deals with their heartache, or with any hard time that they encounter. I do know that whenever I try to handle things on my own, it turns out just like the psalmist, in Psalm 73, verse 26: my heart and flesh fail me But how about the rest of the verse? It says, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. (I always love what follows after but God don t you?) BUT GOD patiently waits for me to call on him, knowing that I eventually will need help. How frustrating it must be for Him to watch us think we can get by on our own. I m so thankful that I was raised to know certain things to be true about the character of the Father, and I m thankful that I know I don t have to rely on myself or any other human being when I face a trial. God s Word says that He ll never leave me or forsake me. But not only that, I m confident, and you can be too, that He ll never fail me when I call out to Him. 15 Artist Profile the Tech Team Robert Rory Dwayne Artists who trust their music to Robert Dixon are assured of one thing they are in capable hands. Years of experience have given him the expertise that has made him one of the most sought after sound engineers in the industry, and his heart for the music has given him the sensitivity to give each song exactly what is needed. At the age of 12, when most boys are interested in other things, Robert had already found his calling in life and began running sound for his church. There, he honed the skills that led to his first endeavor with a musical group and he began travelling with New Life. This soon led to working with The Pfeifers where his talent truly began to be noticed. His heart is grounded in the roots of his faith and his work is in the Christian market where he most recently worked as sound engineer and production manager for the Booth Brothers. He is the founder of Robert Dixon Audio and you can find him at such major Christian events as The National Quartet Convention, Singing In The Sun, Fan Fest, Gaither Homecoming Concerts, Gatlinburg Gathering, and Canada s Gospel Music Celebration where he continues to give the music exactly what is needed. In 1987, Rory Rigdon began travelling full-time in Gospel music with The Kingsmen. His original position was to run sound and later he played percussion and acoustic guitars, before ending up on the bass guitar. After 11 years with the Kingsmen and a heavy schedule of playing an average of over 200 dates a year, Rory decided to resign from his position. Later that year, he got a call from the Gaither organization to help on large production events such as Praise Gatherings, Jubilate, and Gaither Homecoming Video Productions. In a short period of time, he was travelling full-time with the Gaither Homecoming Tour. After a couple of years, Rory became the monitor engineer for the tour, and a year later, he was also given the title of production manager. In 2005, he began playing bass guitar and was given the onstage responsibility of keeping Bill straight. During that time, The Look was born, and quickly became a part of the Homecoming Tour and various Gaither Videos. Across the USA and even in foreign countries, The Look has become Rory s trademark. Now he enjoys being a part of the tour as a monitor engineer and on-camera personality. Rev. Dwayne Toews has been the Senior Pastor of Yarrow Alliance Church in Chilliwack, B.C. since Prior to this he spent 6 years as a worship pastor at the same church. He has a deep love and passion for music and how lives continue to be transformed by the Gospel through the message in song. Dwayne s roots in Southern Gospel Music go back 20 years. He sang with the Young Street Vocal Band for 13 years. In fact, Southern Gospel music played a vital role in shaping and preparing him for ministry today. Dwayne comes to us with years of experience in sound, lighting and technical knowledge. He has gained experience in engineering and production by working with groups such as The Cathedrals, and many groups travelling the west coast. He has toured with the Continental Singers and Orchestra as a vocalist, sound technician, piano player and director s capacity. CGMC is fortunate to have Dwayne give guidance to the technical needs required to make this year s event a first class gathering. Canada s Gospel Music Celebration 13

The Lord has been so faithful to me! Travelling through life there have been so many obstacles in the way, a few detours, joy and pain all mingled together. I have marveled at how God is always ahead of me working things out for my good. Countless times I have seen the end result of some trial and had moments to reflect, to see how God s timing, His love and care were so evident in the situations. There have been times that God would give me a song that would lift me out of a heavy trial. Many times He has used others to speak into my life, at the most difficult times, when I thought there was no comfort, He would send someone along that would remind me, that God is always faithful, at times a hug, or a knowing smile from someone. Sometimes I didn t want to receive it, but the Holy Spirit in His sweet gentle way would root out, cleanse and heal me deep inside, where there were at times wounds I didn t even know were there. Some have told me that they were impressed to pray for me at certain times. I needed it then and thanked God again for His provision. Jesus is so loving and kind. He is a true loyal friend who longs to show His faithfulness to us. The Lord longs for our relationship, to commune with us. We need to be faithful to Him. I struggle at times taking alone time with Jesus, to just sit and be quiet with Him. Looking back I got so busy that I would commune with Him on the go... which is good too, but He said to Be still and know that I AM GOD. That time set aside just for Him is crucial in the life of a believer for our spiritual health. Now that my children have grown, do they see the evidence of me being with Jesus? I now have seven precious grand babies. I see them watching me and copying what I say. Am I showing them who Jesus is? Sitting at the feet of Jesus was so important to me when I first loved Him and I want to be in love with Him again in that way. He is all to me. He is the reason I sing, He is my song. When I struggle with my physical challenges and I feel alone and helpless He gently reminds me that He will never leave me, nor forsake me and that He is my strength when I am weak. He is my healer! He is my all in all! He is the faithful One! Cathy Daae The Daae Family 14 Canada s Gospel Music Celebration July 2016

When you feel like you ve stood near to the gates of heaven, life takes on new meaning I never realized how many things I d taken for granted, sitting, walking, bending, lifting, doing dishes, laundry, cooking a meal, holding my little nephew, going outside, hugging friends and family, playing piano, singing and too many other things to list. For most of my life, up to April 24th, 2015 all of these things came easily to me. I never worried about putting my socks on or tying my shoes until I began a journey of health issues that I never expected. It all started with me lifting sound equipment that was too heavy. Because of this, I ended up in emergency surgery for an umbilical hernia with bowel strangulation. Coming out of surgery a frisbee size blood clot formed in my stomach. A few days later the blood clot ruptured out my incision, and I bled excessively for nearly 6 weeks before they went back in to try and stop the bleeding. I ended up having 3 surgeries (April, May and June), and in an effort to contain the staph infection and to reduce the risk of sepsis, they hooked me up to a vacuum pump machine. It was quite a neat little machine that I called my little buddy. You get quite attached to something when you have it nearly 60 days! In total I was on the couch about 120 days, with an open incision from April to nearly November, Now I don t tell you all of this for you to feel sorry for me. I tell you this because I know that God is good all the time! Even though I ve experienced one of the hardest years of my life due to health, I understand more than ever the words to our songs. I ve felt God holding my hand throughout this entire journey. I ve felt people s prayers like never before! Though I was weak in body, God gave strength to my spirit, and I m amazed how quickly the hours passed while I was on the couch. I have songs rolling through my head that are still in the process of being written. For so many months I wasn t able to sit at the piano, but God has been giving tunes and melodies for my encouragement! Music has carried me through some of the hardest moments. I can remember one prayer time when my family was gathered around, everyone starting singing Holy Spirit, thou art welcome in this place... And when it got to the part Lord in Thy presence there s healing divine, I started to sing with a voice that didn t feel hurt by tubes from surgeries! My sisters started to cry and said Cor, your voice is so strong. It had been months since I sang a note, and with tears rolling down my face I told them that s God!! He is giving me strength!! For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you, and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 In the midst of life s biggest challenges, God is able and will carry us through. He is ever present, always capable, and delights in displaying His faithfulness, through His unlimited ability to hold us even in our darkest hours! I praise God that I am here to tell my story! Though I m still praying for complete healing, and God s touch on my still wounded body, I believe in a God of miracles!! In the meantime, I m singing and doing as much as I can, and I m not taking a single moment of my days for granted! I feel so overwhelmingly blessed! 21 Freedom Singers Artist Profile Simon and Steven Ivascu fled Romania when they were only teenagers. In Romania, all young men were forced to join the army. Being conscientious Christians, they could not join the army because freedom of worship was totally restricted. Refusing to join would result in several years of imprisonment and persecution. Determined to escape to freedom, they faced danger and hardships, but Simon s nightmare began in earnest when they crawled into a container, which was then locked and sealed, and placed Home Base: Started: 2001 Lead: Tenor: Baritone: Kelowna, BC Jake Losen Simon Ivascu Steven Ivascu aboard a ship. They ran out of food, water, oxygen and hope. As despair filled that container, it appeared that the container, would likely become their tomb. Once again, God provided another of many miracles in this incredible real life story of faith and perseverance in the face of insurmountable odds. They have been singing since their days in Italy shortly after fleeing Romania. Simon recalls, We were singing mostly hymns, but we started to sing Southern Gospel Music in 2000, after we heard the Gaither s and the Cathedrals on television. It was a sound that we instantly fell in love with. After singing at church and telling our story in Jake, Steven, Simon 2001, the Freedom Singers was officially born. In 2011, Jake Losen from Detroit, MI joined the brothers as lead singer. Freedom Singers share their music and testimony in the hope that those who listen will be spiritually enriched and blessed. 22 No matter what the age, I believe everyone has experienced God s Faithfulness, mercy, and love. In the book of Lamentations it says, It is of the Lord s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning, great is thy faithfulness. Almost 4 years ago my wife gave birth to our daughter Embry Caroline. Within 24 hrs following the birth our daughter began to have seizures and those seizures caused her to stop breathing multiple times, for extended periods. She was rushed to the Local NICU and for a week we waited as tests were ran to show us what, if any, permanent issues she might have long term. We went from the highest high to the lowest low within hours. Our first born child was in our arms one minute, the next, we can t hold her and not sure what the future held for her. It was unchartered territory for us and we had immediate fear and worry. Word spread quickly and a friend of mine contacted me on Facebook and said Scotty you ve sung about God s faithfulness and shared with people everywhere about your faith in God... Now is your time to use that and trust it. Those words couldn t come at a better time. We had people all over the world praying for little Embry. My wife and I began to feel a peace that only God could give. Even though we had no answers and no clue what would be the outcome, we prayed and we prayed and prayed, for God to heal our daughter but more importantly for Him to have His will. Sometimes, these things are easier to say once you ve learned all will be ok but, in the midst of the storm we had complete peace and comfort. A week later all the test results came back and other than a short term heart monitor and short term medication, our daughter was cleared of any permanent damage and almost 4 years later is completely healed and doing great! Praise the Lord!! God was so great to us and our girl. He heard every prayer and saw fit to heal her. God is so good and always will be no matter what the outcome. Jesus never fails! 24 Jesus Never Fails, even when we do Several years ago I met a young woman (I ll call her Jenna) at one of our concerts. We talked for a long time, until all the gear was packed up and the rest of the Band was waiting for me. She was a very confused girl, raised in a Christian home, but exposed to a lot of worldly garbage. Over the course of many years following that first encounter we corresponded via . During those years I was a busy mom and travelling musician and felt unskilled in counselling Jenna. She confided in me and I would diligently pray for her, but it felt like I was her only link to God. This put a lot of pressure on me (admittedly mostly from myself) and I lacked the time needed for such a precious soul. She made progress in her belief in God, trusting Him and making efforts to attend Church. Then one day she hit a crisis and plunged into despair, ultimately blaming God. She proceeded to live wildly, not caring about anything it seemed. When she visited she shared openly about her exploits and sometimes her comments were a shock to our sheltered family s ears. As a protection for my children I discouraged her visits and in a way I closed my heart to her as well. Perhaps I considered her a lost cause. Shortly after my spurning of her friendship, Jenna headed to her original hometown and boarded at her mother s best friend s house. Now this woman was a champion prayer warrior and very tenaciously called out to the Lord for this young woman. She enlisted her large Church family in prayer for her as well. After about a year of just loving her and caring deeply for her, Jenna accepted Jesus as her Saviour and Lord. She was baptized in that large Church and had many people encourage her in her walk with God. We have since resumed our friendship and I see a genuine, beautiful transformation in Jenna that only Jesus can bring. I feel such great joy whenever I think of how much the Lord has done in her life. You see, JESUS NEVER FAILS, even when we may give up on someone. Debbie Hemmerling Canada s Double Portion The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is His faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each morning. For no one is abandoned by the Lord forever. Though He brings brings grief, He also shows compassion because of the greatness of His unfailing love. 25 Someone once said We may not always be able to trace God, but we can always trust Him. Sometimes in life it is so easy to focus only on what our eyes can see, our hands can touch, our minds comprehend and our hearts feel. Although this path is natural, God calls us to a path obscure to many of us, The Path Of Faith and Trust. I find in my personal life, that I love deadlines, calendars of time telling me when to expect exactly what. Especially when it comes to something unpleasant, my weak flesh demands a deadline. But, God asks for more and as His child He gives me the strength to become a cut above. He will take me on a journey if I let Him, and teach me that time is my refining fire and my circumstances are purifying me into a masterpiece He is creating. So I m reminded, don t give in or give up, something beautiful is about to happen. But, it is in this period of waiting, trusting and believing in the faithfulness of God that often we become disillusioned and our hearts are prone to wander after the mirages of this world s desert that look more promising than this wilderness of waiting. I recall that the children of Israel chased many mirages in their desert wanderings and only to find, every time, that God was working and moving. If they had only trusted in His faithfulness, how much better it would have been. If you fast forward hundreds of years, it seems that this problem is still alive and well in humanity. We find the very disciples that have been living and learning from Jesus Christ are suddenly terrified when their faith is put to the test. A storm arises on the sea and it seems their faith fails and fear flourishes. They cry out Matthew 8:25 And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. And then the Almighty s response in Matthew 8:26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. I try to put myself where the disciples stood. It looked hopeless, hopeless enough to cry out for their very lives, but Jesus response is Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? I wonder if the disciples maybe for a moment had the thought that crossed my mind- But you were asleep! Trust Him fully and follow Him faithfully It is in this thought I find the greatest assurance. Jesus Christ was soundly asleep, resting while the disciples thought this storm would surely claim their very lives. Yet, here is the power it is even when He sleeps, or seems to be unaware that He shows us on this boat with His disciples, He knows exactly what is happening to you! So, where are you today? Do you feel like it is hard to trust in God s faithfulness because it seems He doesn t hear or isn t moving? I urge you to look again the Saviour asleep in the boat was controlling the wind and waves and keeping the disciples safe in His care and fully aware of the situation! If you are in a storm today and you feel the need to be reassured of God s faithfulness, be assured! He knows and He s now very near to you. Remember how the story ends? And there was a great calm. Trust Him fully and follow Him faithfully and watch the sun break through. Lindsay Reith Southern Raised Canada s Gospel Music Celebration 23

Food for thought I have, like many today, been wrestling with the changing way that we have church. Trying to catch a thought from a sermon or a writer s experience has its own set of challenges. I have often found it hard to apply the obvious to my walk with the Lord. It has been said that the Church is not a museum of saints, but a hospital for sinners. Yet, most of us would much rather pretend to be a saint on display than call for an ambulance. Week after week, many of us walk into a church, sit by people we have known for years and yet would never dream of sharing our innermost struggles with. While a large part of this is our pride, another factor is a Church that seems unwilling to talk about certain uncomfortable issues, choosing rather to ignore them, try to cover them up or simply reject people who bring them up. There are many issues the Church as a whole needs to address, such as creationism, activism, stewardship and many others. But there are many more issues that individuals in the Church are dealing with issues that the Church Body should be talking about. In Galatians 6:2, Paul urged the Church to Bear each other s burdens, so maybe with more grace and love we can turn on the light in the darkened rooms of each other s hearts and let our churches become safe havens for the uncomfortable things we have to deal with. Many of these issues need to be dealt with professionally first. But that should not be the end of it. Just listening to someone and showing them you genuinely care for their situation can be a huge part of that person s healing process. This is far from a comprehensive list. And as people come and go to Church, it is becoming more urgent that the Church talk about how to care for every one of its members. In many churches today, there are Christians, even pastors, who are struggling with doubt. They have cried out in prayer. They are struggling to believe that God is good or that He s there at all, yet they continue with the motions. They put on the smile while setting up the coffee table. They mouth along to the words in the worship songs, but it all feels hollow to them. I know this because I ve been one of these people. One of the most vital ways the Church can handle doubt is to stop acting like everything about faith is obvious. The Church can recognize that we all have doubts from time to time, but we cling to a hope that s beyond rational explanation. There are droves of lonely people in the church, and that includes senior pastors and many who attend. The isolation comes from a lack of identification and identification comes through open communication. When we can be vulnerable and honest with one another, we understand each other in a profound way. A lonely person may walk in to a church alone and leave alone each Sunday. Although they appreciate the free coffee and donuts the fellowship hall offers, what they really want is fellowship. Taking time to get to know the people around you and then reaching out to them outside of the church will allow for a greater, more stable community. Of course, every church is different and while one church may be stronger in one area, it may be weaker in others. And as we talk about them, we must remember to address them with humility, understanding and grace, keeping in mind our role as fellow hospital patients, not museum curators. Building on our strengths is a good goal to strive for. We definitely need to have the fellowship of a church body to maintain our spiritual lives just to deal with daily living. It becomes even more exciting when we discover that we are Blessed to Bless. LWD Canada s Gospel Music Celebration 27

Feature Showcase A Hopper Homecoming What started as an ordinary summer day in 1958 became the start of America s Favourite Family of Gospel Music. As Connie Shelton stopped at a traffic light, Claude Hopper knocked on her window and asked her to join him and his family as the Hopper Brothers pianist. In the time needed for the light to change from red to green, Claude got the answer he was looking for. Once Connie came along, the group added her name to theirs and began travelling as the Hopper Brothers and Connie. The two were married a short time later and are now known the world over simply as The Hoppers. Through the years, The Hoppers have seen artists like members of The Talleys and Janet Paschal join their ranks before continuing careers elsewhere. Soon, Claude and Connie realized the musicians they were looking for were living under their own roof! As sons Dean and Michael grew, so did their desire to join the family business. Both joining the group as drummers (Dean would eventually move to lead vocals as Michael became the full-time percussionist and part-time bass vocalist), the Hopper house at one time was simply described as loud. Kim Greene Hopper had been singing with her own family group for over ten years before marrying Dean. Now, many people look back at Kim joining The Hoppers, in 1989, as a pivotal point in their history. 28 Canada s Gospel Music Celebration July 2016

Though the family had long been a Gospel music household name, the 1990s were an exceptional time for The Hoppers in terms of accolades, recognition and chart-topping radio singles. The group was widely revered as one of the best in the business. Over Claude & Connie time, the group and its members have received more than 75 awards and countless nominations not including their induction into the GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame in The current lineup for The Hoppers has been performing together, night after night, for more than 26 years and there are no signs of slowing down anytime soon. As Michael put it, We ve all signed lifetime contracts. Although such statements can be said tongue-in-cheek, many Gospel music fans are hoping those words ring true. With 70+ albums to their credit, The Hoppers have been working on their latest project with grammy-winning producers and friends, Lari Goss and Michael Sykes, for more than two years. Lari, who unexpectedly made his crossing, left behind some of his best work that will debut on this new album. Amidst this, Connie s second battle with cancer, Kim almost losing her mother, Claude sustaining a ministroke while on Kim stage a series of unfortunate situations the family banded together. Now, coming into the light, The Hoppers are scheduled to release their new recording Life is Good this upcoming fall. Q: What keeps you on the road? A: Simply, what we ve been able to see God do through the songs, in concerts, during services... Without lives being changed and Him receiving the glory, this is all in vain. 34 We do not know what the future holds or what tomorrow will bring, but we can take courage knowing God is still in control and He has a plan, even when we don t understand exactly what is going on. Earlier this year, we were faced with some situations that caused us to be extra grateful for Jesus protection over our lives. You never know how quickly your life can change. On February 14th of this year, our family was in our home church, the Pastor was giving the message when we got a call saying my older brother, Gary was in a vehicle accident (He was working in the oilfield and had to work that Sunday). His truck slipped on an icy part of the road and rolled. He was trapped inside the vehicle with no way out. Emergency crews were on their way. We all left the church service quickly to go to the scene of the accident. It felt like one of the longest drives. When we came over the hill and saw his truck upside down in the ditch, it was so hard to look at. We didn t know what to expect. The rescue squad cut the door off and carried Gary out on a stretcher into the ambulance. To make a long story short, Gary was rushed to hospital and released with only a headache and some minor scratches. We are so thankful that he is fine! We know God works all things together for good because we love Him! We thank Jesus for His protection. Only a few weeks later, while driving my car, a vehicle went through a stop sign at quite a fast speed and crashed into me. In the split seconds leading up to the accident as I saw the vehicle approaching I remember saying Jesus help me and tried to avoid the crash by steering away. Upon impact, both airbags in my vehicle went off and my car filled with a cloud of smoke. My vehicle was totaled, but in this situation as well, miraculously, I walked away from that accident without any injuries. The doctor said I had slight whiplash, but would recover quickly. After reviewing the accident, we learned if the timing was a second different, the impact would have been directly on my driver s side with a high chance of serious injury or fatality. We are so grateful for God s protection once again. When it seems the devil is out to steal, kill and destroy, remember Jesus came that we may have life and have it more abundantly. He is the Good Shepherd and the Shepherd watches over His sheep. I thank my God who cares about every step in these boots I wear, I might have had a few hard landings, but I m still standing. I m Still Standing, by Brad Rempel, Phil O Donnell, Jon Henderson A few days after that, my wife Jessica stepped out of our house and slipped on a patch of ice hitting her head on a concrete walkway. Thankfully, she remained conscious and was able to contact me. We went to the hospital and after spending time with the doctors in the emergency room, she was sent home to rest and has completely recovered. We are so blessed again for Jesus hand of protection! I m reminded of The Amundruds song: I m Still Standing. I thank my God who cares about every step in these boots I wear, I might have had a few hard landings, but I m still standing. Be encouraged and know that Jesus cares for every detail in your life whether big or small. - Daryl Amundrud The Amundruds 32 Canada s Gospel Music Celebration July 2016

Feature Showcase The world needs the beauty of the old hymns just like we need Volume the Two ethereal beauty of starry nights, the nostalgia of Norman Rockwell, and the quiet elegance of The Mona Lisa. Melissa Brady A Tribute to Hymns Volume Two From Genesis to Revelation, music has always been an important part of worship and praise. The old Gospel songs have touched hearts throughout centuries, flooding the soul with joy and peace. Gerald Wolfe of Greater Vision, has thrilled thousands of lives by resurrecting the inspiring Gospel songs. Gerald leads his audiences with musical excellence, enthusiasm, and energy. Everyone has their own favourite hymn and is eager to share the power of the lyrics in their lives. One lady, with tears streaming down her cheeks, told me how The Old Rugged Cross had given her full forgiveness through the blood of Jesus. Another gentleman told me how Love Lifted Me had indeed lifted him from his sinful past and had given him a new beginning. How many people in their dying moments have been given hope and promise through It is Well with my Soul? God uses the melodies to touch the emotions and draw us to Himself. God uses the powerful lyrics to accomplish His purposes and plans for our lives. At my husband s memorial service, hymns of joy were sung with enthusiasm as we testified through music the power of the cross. Nobody can lead a Gospel hymn sing like Gerald Wolfe as he leads in a Tribute to Hymns. Blend your voice with hundreds of others and receive the great blessing that God has in store for you through congregational singing. As Melissa Brady so eloquently said in last year s program, The world needs the beauty of the old hymns just like we need the ethereal beauty of starry nights, the nostalgia of Norman Rockwell, and the quiet elegance of The Mona Lisa. Make sure to participate Saturday afternoon at the Tribute to Hymns accompanied by Stan Whitmore at the piano, and many of your favourite Gospel singers. You will leave refreshed, revived, and full of joy. Marg Griffin 34 Canada s Gospel Music Celebration July 2016

We as Christians always seem to have an abundance of sayings we can pull out to sound a little more spiritual. Often these phrases are so ambiguous to the listener, that you can make a quick exit to the conversation before things get too uncomfortable. No one, even remotely spiritual, is going to question you if you say Jesus never fails. After all, it calls into question your theology if you challenge it. A perfect, all knowing God is not going to make a mistake, or take on a challenge that he can t complete. Even the most confident people will eventually fail, so we look for something sure that we can trust. When life is going smoothly it is a very easy phrase to roll off your tongue. As I write this, I am sitting on a plane several thousand feet above the ground. Frankly, as long as it s not too turbulent, or there are not unusual mechanical noises, I m not too worried about putting my faith in the flight crew and the plane. Now if that grinding noise I m hearing gets much worse I may question whether this plane will never fail. When we re thrown into a turbulent time of life, we have to decide whether or not Jesus will never fail. If things work out the way we want them to, we can easily resume our use of the phrase, because Jesus knew what we wanted, and He came through and brought it about when we couldn t. But what happens when things don t work out the way we want them to? What if healing doesn t come? What if the worst thing that could possibly happen, happens? We praise God when He says yes to our requests, but we honour Him when He says no. If Jesus never fails, sometimes our desires fail, and we want things that are not the best for us. So we need to look at life s stresses, as if they are the question will Jesus fail? Our peace, or lack thereof will be our answer. So the next time you are looking for a way to encourage a struggling individual, let them ask the question will Jesus fail? and answer with peace and confidence, I don t know the end of the story, but Jesus never fails Jon Hisey Torchmen Official Display Contractor to the: 36 Canada s Gospel Music Celebration July 2016

To care for us. We go through stages, through times, in our walk that we are not the most lovable, the most fun to be around. He cares for us. 40 The Jim Brady Trio Southern Gospel fans were stunned in the fall of 2014 when Jim Brady announced that he was leaving The Booth Brothers for a new venture. The usual reasons for group transitions the lack of chemistry among the members, the failure to unite around a shared vision, an inability to produce quality work, weak demand for concerts didn t apply. Michael and Ronnie Booth and Jim Brady had built their trio into one of the brand names of the genre. They are more than friends to me, Jim says of Michael and Ronnie. We spent almost 13 years together, and I absolutely love them as brothers. They are as close to me as blood brothers. Conventional wisdom would say that Jim should never leave such sure and steady success for an uncertain future with an unknown group. But conventional wisdom can t account for the nudge of the Holy Spirit, and it doesn t take into consideration the value a man and his wife can place on serving in ministry together. And so The Jim Brady Trio was born. It s been an amazing, amazing time already, Jim says. I thought things would start slower and take time to catch. People didn t know what to expect, and I wasn t sure how quickly we d get dates. But from the moment we announced, the calendar filled up. God has really blessed us in a great way. The springboard for the Trio s whirlwind year, as Melissa describes it, is a story in itself. Michael and Ronnie Booth were extremely helpful, Jim says. You can plan and work and prepare for a transition, but you cannot make things happen the way this happened. That has to be a God thing. I tell folks today, when God nudges your heart to step into the unknown, don t be surprised when He blesses you and walks you through everything you re facing and gives you grace to walk through. God was faithful, and He was there. He showed up and blessed us beyond what we could have dreamed. But the year also brought its struggles. One of the Bible s recurring themes is the cycle of endings and beginnings, of death and renewal. The obvious parallel is Jim s departure from The Booth Brothers and the debut of The Jim Brady Trio. It was the ending of something precious and the beginning of something exciting, Jim says. But the theme was also reflected in the deaths of friends and family close to the trio. In January, acclaimed writer/arranger/ producer Lari Goss passed away suddenly, followed by iconic songwriter Mosie Lister, in February. In the fall, Jim s father died 38 Canada s Gospel Music Celebration July 2016

unexpectedly, shortly before Jim s sister succumbed to cancer. To have to say goodbye to people so dear has been very difficult, Jim says. It could really knock the wind out of you, knock your legs out from under you. But those hardships make you stronger. They make you deeper. They make you depend more on God. He walks with you and provides God uses those (hard times) to grow you up. That s really what He s taught us and is still teaching us. It sounds like a cliché, but it s true: God s grace is sufficient. He gives you extra in these times to get you through. Jim says the pain of losing loved ones has helped him keep perspective when things go wrong. You prioritize a lot easier, he says. You decide, I m going to spend time on things that matter and not sweat the small stuff If it s not going to matter in eternity, I m not going to spend time on it now. Even though it s been a tough time, it s been a sweet time, because we ve felt the presence of the Lord close to us. There has been a peace that can only be experienced with God, Melissa says. We re taking this journey this opportunity of a new chapter that is allowing us to share our hearts and our story and our songs all across the country. If we can do that and help someone else who s going through what we ve been through, then we re doing what we were supposed to do. The Jim Brady Trio s debut album already had songs suited perfectly for ministering to people about loss and restoration, about earthly death and spiritual renewal. That album, appropriately titled A New Chapter, was one of the last projects Lari Goss worked on before he died. We are writers, and we knew we had to write our story, Jim says. Steppin Out in Faith is our story. The song, based on stories of faith from Hebrews, had been the trio s debut single in January Jim and Melissa had written God of What s to Come, the second single, as a similar statement of faith. As much as it was designed to be a spiritual encouragement for fans, it became a personal reminder for the trio that God s faithfulness is unchanging. We believe the God of everything that s happened up to this point in our lives is the God of everything that is before us on this journey, Melissa says. We don t know how the new chapter unfolds, but we know God will be a part of it. It wasn t a conscious thought to go with that theme of endings and beginnings on the album, Melissa says. But when we sat down and started gathering songs, we were choosing songs that were telling our story. The theme naturally happened because it s where we are in our lives, fulfilling this new dream, this new chapter we re in. Singing for Jesus is absolutely incredible, but getting to sing for Jesus with Jim is icing on the cake, Melissa says. There is excitement that God has opened the door. What s He going to let us do? This is the most rewarding time for us, Jim says. Melissa gets to sing, and we get to be together. This is really what our heart has wanted for many years. God continues to guide us and move us into new places, and I think that s just like the Christian life. Really, it s a faith walk. You trust God today, and you trust Him tomorrow for what you don t know and what you can t see. Reprinted with permission from Singing News magazine. Canada s Gospel Music Celebration 39

Susan Whisnant s song, Even in the Valley echoed and re-echoed through my head as I faced the reality of losing my lifelong husband, friend, lover, and buddy. For over fifty-three years, we had snuggled together, and on September 13th, 2015, he left me for a better place, a better person, a better purpose, and a better promise. He went to be with Jesus, discovering his heavenly mission and holding on to the promise of a new body and heavenly music. Bill died very suddenly from an infection in the spinal cord which paralyzed his entire body. Despite highly skilled intervention at Foothills ICU, God called him home. Mercifully, God put me in a state of shock where I could still function without the burden of tears and that painful lump in my throat. Those emotions would awaken later, but in the first two months, I was held securely in the arms of Jesus, where Gospel music flooded my being from morning to night. Greater Visions Come Unto Me, the Perry s Celebrate me Home, the Gaither Vocal Band s Sitting at the feet of Jesus, Booth Brothers Look for me at Jesus Feet, and Whisnant s Even in the Valley were only a few of the songs God gave me to provide enormous comfort and peace. Hundreds of friends upheld me in fervent prayers and I experienced great answers to your requests for my well-being. My family was constantly by my side loving and encouraging me. My daughter Karen and her husband, Murray Friesen, their children and in-laws Mark and Amanda, Ryan and Lyndsay, along with my son Kevin, have all been very precious gifts from God. Gospel Music and the Grief Journey They ve looked after the practical as well as my mental and emotional needs. Even during their own personal sorrow, they gave me overflowing TLC. My church family, Foothills Alliance, under Pastor Ian Trigg, bathed me in love and support. The Southern Gospel Music Community flooded me with flowers, music, love and memories. During that week in ICU, Gospel music concerns were paramount in Bill s mind. He received great peace when I assured him that the concerts he had booked would be carried out to the best of our abilities. My son Kevin, along with my lifelong friends Pat and Sue, quickly formed a new team to methodically execute the concerts in October and December, of 2015, and April and October, of God s unseen hand had directed Bill to book just the right groups that would prove to be a great blessing and comfort to me. God s leading has been evident in every step of our Gospel music journey without Bill. The new Gospel music team has been God s answer to your prayers, as Kevin, Pat, and Sue have showered me with great love and joy. Their help has allowed Bill s Joyful Sound Concerts to fulfill his commitments to uplifting the name of Jesus, through this wonderful genre of music. God has been faithful and true even in the valley. God has been good and given me peace and blessed assurance that Bill is with the Lord and one day we ll be reunited. How thankful I am that I have Gospel songs and scriptures hidden deep in my heart! Because He lives, I can face tomorrow. God is healing my broken heart and replacing a spirit of heaviness with the oil of joy. God is Good, All the Time! Marg Griffin Joyful Sounds Concerts 40 Canada s Gospel Music Celebration July 2016

If the last few years have reminded us of anything, it has been how faithful God is. Folks are experiencing things they ve never experienced before at levels they ve never dreamt, including ourselves. However, the faithfulness of God has proven to never waver. The fact that we all awaken to a new day with fresh mercy and perspective is proof enough of His faithfulness. We can t begin to count how many spiritually dead cases we ve met and talked with or, how many financially destroyed folks have shared with us the joy of purchasing their own house or, how many physically broken people have walked toward our table to discuss the goodness and faithfulness of God. We actually discuss this on the bus frequently. Encountering a broken heart and disheveled mind can make it difficult to communicate the faithfulness of God. Sometimes people seem to reach the point of complete and total disregard to the hope that God has stored up for them all hope seems lost. Yet, we, as children of the FOR REAL, EXISTING, ALMIGHTY, MOST HIGH God have the promise of hope from a God that is faithful and His Son that never fails! A few years back, our bus, our home away from home, was lost to a fire burned to the ground on the side of the interstate in Texas. We lost everything, other than the sound equipment. If you ve ever lost your house to a fire, you know there is no feeling worse than the helplessness felt while watching your home being consumed by fire. There you stand. There we stood cars backed up for miles. The weather was cold and night was approaching. It had already hit national news outlets before we could tell most people. Friends had to drive to us to pick us up and transport us back to Nashville. The insurance process took up to 15 months before we could purchase another vehicle fit for our travelling schedule. It was a LONG 15 months. However, we kept moving. No concert appearance (other than those remaining of that particular week) went unfulfilled. As difficult as it was and, IT WAS God was faithful. God IS faithful. God will ALWAYS BE faithful. Our minds are so limited at times. We know in our hearts that the God of all creation, who parted the waters and raised the dead, who is the King over every ruler, loves us individually and understand our every pain. It s hard for our minds to comprehend that there is no promise He doesn t fulfill. God is faithful. Jesus NEVER fails. Josh Singletary Tribute Quartet 42 Canada s Gospel Music Celebration July 2016

Everything will be OK How many times have you heard that statement? I heard it all the time when I was growing up. By whom? John Ellerby, my dad and my biggest hero. Dad was a man who was strong in his walk with Jesus. His life reflected and showed that always remaining faithful to God and trusting His leading in every aspect of one s life, meant that no matter what journey you go through, God will make sure everything will be ok. In short, Jesus never fails. This was the legacy of dad s life. This statement has also been said more times than I can count in this last year. As a family we were about to embark on a journey, that would take our family to a place we had never been. Dad s cancer had returned. Everything will be ok, Dad said. We believed him because, Dad said it and he always spoke truth. Who wouldn t believe their hero, right? As a family who believes that God is the Healer, we knew that Dad would be healed. We had seen God do it before and that He would do it again. As the days and weeks passed, Dad s body was taken over by the horrible disease. Yet, in all his pain, he never once complained. He just said, Everything will be ok. We held onto that truth and continued to believe his words. We also came to understand and accept that God was going to heal Dad, just maybe not in the way we were praying for. On February 4th, those words for him changed to Everything is now ok. But what about those of us who were left behind? There are definitely days that feel like nothing will be alright. Days where tears flow and I wish I could hear his voice. Days where I wish I could get more advice and wise counsel. Yet, it s in these times where I still hear these four simple words, Everything will be ok. What Dad was saying and teaching us, really meant this. God is always Faithful. If you are having trouble seeing the similarity in these words, just hang in there... Shortly before our journey as a family, I began singing this song by some dear friends, the Whisnants. It talks about the mountains and the valleys we all go through in life. The chorus of the song says this. Even in the valley, God is good. Even in the valley, He is Faithful and True. He carries his children through, like He said He would. Even in the valley, God is good. It is so amazing to me, how God gives just the music or just one song to get a person through the hard times, when nothing else can. I am so thankful that He gave me this song to remind me of His constant presence in my life. It s so easy to trust God when things are going great in life. But, what about those times when it isn t so great. I m not just talking about things such as sickness, job loss, financial issues or even marriage issues. What about the everyday issues that can take place? Like, a flat tire, broken down appliances, or a stressful work day. It can be these valleys that cause us to lose sight of God s faithfulness to us, even just for a brief moment. The valley that our family walked through was without a doubt, a pretty large one. Did I sometimes lose sight of God s faithfulness? Absolutely. Did I have doubt that everything would be ok? You bet I did. After all, we are human and it s completely normal to have those different thoughts and emotions. But did God change? No. He was always there. Dad was the one that God used to teach us about faithfulness. When his journey here ended, he gave us the mantle to carry. So to honour and keep our promise to our hero, I can tell you without any hesitation, that even in the valley you are or may walk through, keep your eyes on Jesus. Everything will be ok. 48 Why the Gospel Matters in Our Ministry Why do you guys have to talk about Jesus can t you just help people? I sat silently for a moment to collect my thoughts with my wife s uncle Steve just across the table, his frustration evident. I d recently joined Compassion s staff and had just explained how our ministry works. Steve didn t like what he d heard. I get why. The idea that we openly preach the Gospel in our ministry is disturbing to non-christians (and some Christians, too). They hear we share the Gospel and immediately think proselytizing. While this once was a synonym for evangelism, it now carries a far more sinister connotation think pressuring children to say a prayer in exchange for a bag of rice or a hunk of bread. Proselytizing and by extension genuine evangelism has become the bogeyman of the non-profit world, to the point that some organizations now prohibit it. We don t like proselytizing either. That s why we don t do it. We accept people of all faiths into our programs, and we don t require or coerce them to change. We want to help people in a way that protects their dignity as humans made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). While we don t proselytize, we are uncompromising about our evangelistic focus. As a Christian ministry committed to ending poverty in the lives of children we can be nothing less. (continued) 46 Canada s Gospel Music Celebration July 2016

Why the Gospel Matters in our Ministry (continued) Perhaps it seems strange to connect the Gospel to poverty. If poverty were simply circumstantial a lack of food, education, or medicine then it would make sense for our efforts to solely focus on those areas. But as we read the Scriptures, we see that behind all the devastation that poverty brings there is something else at work, a spiritual condition that continually frustrates and undermines our best efforts to change our own circumstances. In the opening chapters of the Bible, we are shown a world in which everything is perfect, one God declares very good (Genesis. 1:31). God, man and the rest of creation were in perfect harmony. It was a world in which poverty could not exist. Until the Fall. When Adam and Eve rebelled against their Creator, they set in motion events that would turn God s good creation, one in which poverty could not exist, into one where poverty was now the default setting. Where there was once harmony between God, mankind and creation, there was now discord. Where once the ground produced fruit in abundance with ease, now man would toil to scrape out even a meager existence. Economic prosperity would be elusive and constantly slip through our fingers (Genesis. 3:16-19). Because of one man s sin, all of humanity came under a curse. It is this curse that is at the heart of poverty today. Whether war and corruption, droughts and earthquakes, poor crop yields or total economic collapse, everything we see and everything we experience all of it goes back to the curse. It is from this curse that Jesus came to set people free. This doesn t mean that God promises that those who come to faith in Jesus will have health and wealth. We live in a fallen world where the effects of sin and the curse remain at work. But it does mean that if poverty at its most basic level is a spiritual issue the result of sin s presence in the world then there is an eternal solution. There is a day when poverty will finally and fully end. A day when Jesus will return to bring about the new creation, when he will wipe away every tear from every eye and all of God s people will spend eternity with Him (Revelations 21:1-4). This is the hope we look forward to. This is the hope that has transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of children through Compassion s ministry, who today serve their communities and nations, in whatever circumstances God has placed them, fueled by the promise of the new creation to come. Caring for physical needs is absolutely necessary, and something God clearly commands (James 2:14-16). To neglect this charge would be to deny that God s love lives within us (1 John 3:17). But the poor s (and our) greatest need isn t met through good deeds. It is only the Gospel that offers forgiveness of our sins and reconciliation with our Creator. The Gospel deals with the root poverty from which all other poverty flows. If we are serious about our mission if we are serious about releasing children from poverty in Jesus name then we need to talk about Jesus. Five years and several conversations later, Steve is still frustrated. He still doesn t get why we talk about Jesus. He still doesn t like it. But this is the task to which God has called us. May he continue to grant us favour.
