OPENING ACTIVITY or ICE BREAKER (10 minutes) Deny Self For Every Section of this Lesson: follow one of the two directives below. 1. If you are leading one family group of 10 or less members, follow all of the instructions given for FG helpers IN SMALL FAMILY GROUPS and for the large group leader IN A LARGE GROUP. 2. If you have two or more family groups, follow all instructions IN A LARGE GROUP, but make sure each group has a family group helper and verbally give all helpers the instructions printed under the section entitled IN SMALL FAMILY GROUPS. Also, point them to their Family Group Helper s Guide so they can read these instructions for their own clarity and help you by making them clear to their groups. You Will Need: One piece of paper and a pencil for each family group. IN SMALL FAMILY GROUPS: Instruct helpers to follow the instructions printed below in their Helper s Guides: For Preschoolers: Help younger answer or ask them to listen and repeat answers they hear to keep them involved.! Ask every member to think of one thing that can keep people from praying, attending church, and reading God s Word. Pass the paper and pencil to each member so they can write their answer down. For Preschoolers: Ask those sitting near them to help those who cannot print to print their answer.! Help your group begin to think of things people can give up so they will have time to pray, attend church, and read God s Word until the large group leader tells everyone to stop.! Finally, help your group listen to the large group leader to learn more about this activity and lesson. SS LG - Page 2

IN A LARGE GROUP: Introduce the lesson. Say: When we fail to make God a priority, our souls suffer and so can our bodies because our lives do not posses God s balance and strength. So, for healthy bodies and souls we need to get rid of what is unhealthy, and that usually means denying ourselves. It is the season of Lent and some people give up food or other things for Lent. Whether we give up anything for Lent or not, our lesson will help see how Jesus command to deny ourselves and follow Him helps to give our lives the Christian priorities and balance that grow holy, healthy generations, the theme and mission for this UIM year. THE FIRST FEW WEEKS, A FEW TIMES DURING, AND AGAIN AT THE END OF EACH SERIES, SAY: Before we move on, let s take time to look at the UIM theme for this year, as well as the theme for this UIM SS Series and the Bible verse that goes with it that can be found in the Supplemental Leader Instructions (page 5) for this Series. OPTIONS: For preschoolers and members who are distracted, uninvolved, or disruptive. See the Supplemental Leader Instructions for more information about how to use these options. Ask these questions even over and over again to gain attention and teach by repetition: 1) When we do not establish healthy priorities and balance in our lives, what can our bodies suffer? Answer: Physical illness and even death. 2) When do not make God a priority, what can our souls suffer? Answer: Spiritual and eternal death. Drawing and Coloring: Ask members to draw pictures of things people can give up to make time for God in their lives. If you choose to use pictures members drew to teach the lesson, invite some members to share their pictures and use each picture to remind everyone that for healthy bodies and souls, we need to get rid of what is unhealthy. Our lesson will help see how Jesus command to deny ourselves and follow Him helps to give our lives the Christian priorities and balance that grow healthy generations body and soul. IN EVERY LESSON! Remind everyone that while it is important to establish healthy Christian priorities and balance, working to do so does not save us eternally. We are saved by God s grace through faith and not through anything we do (Ephesians 2:8-9). ASK: How are we and all believers saved eternally? Teach everyone to repeat By grace through faith. See the Supplemental Leader Instructions to share how we receive God s grace through faith. (2 minutes) GOD S WORD FOR US TODAY See the Supplemental Leader Instructions for special instructions to help you teach this passage by repetition UIM style and specifically to Preschoolers. Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. 1 Corinthians 10:12 GOD S WORD APPLICATION ACTIVITY (3 minutes) Stand IN A LARGE GROUP:! Ask everyone to stand on one foot until everyone s foot falls. SS LG - Page 3

! Once every foot held up has fallen, say: We cannot stand all the time because we are sinners. However, our sin may not be what we think. Sometimes, our sin is believing we are standing strong in faith and that we cannot fall. So, we neglect prayer, God s Word, and attending Worship. We do not give God priority and we do not receive His balance and strength for our faith and lives. This is exactly what our God s Word For Us Today passage is warning us about. This is exactly what our God s Word For Us Today passage is warning us about. Cue everyone to say it: Therefore let anyone who thinks... Invite everyone to join you in the following litany that helps us see how prayer, reading God s Word, and attending Worship and Sunday School helps to keep our souls healthy so we can stand and not fall eternally. (3 minutes) ACTIVE LITANY Through Christ, Our Souls Are Kept Healthy IN A LARGE GROUP: Divide the large group into four groups and assign each group one verse Give groups time to practice words and actions as described. Then groups should read their verse in numerical order and do the actions. After each verse, the large group should respond with the refrain. For Preschoolers: Groups should read one line at a time so members who cannot read can repeat lines. Remind those sitting near them to help them do the actions. Refrain: Through Christ, our souls are kept healthy, To stand, not fall eternally. Verse 1: Reading God s Word makes us strong, Helps us do good, keeps us from wrong. Response Action: Place hands together, then open as if reading the Bible. Verse 2: Prayer helps us to place God first, To stand, not fall, and stay alert. Response Action: Fold hands in prayer. Verse 3: Worship of God gives strength to live So we our lives to Jesus give. Response Action: Raise arms in worship and offering. Verse 4: Studying God s Word diligently Helps our souls to stay healthy. Response Action: Point to shoulder (body) and then to soul (hand over heart). CONCLUSION: Say: When we give up everything and anything that keeps us from making God our number one priority, He gives balance to our faith and lives, balance that is healthy for our bodies and souls. Yet, even when we know prayer and God s Word and Worship and Bible Study all strengthen us in faith to stand firm and put God first so we do not fall, we still neglect or forget about them and about Him. The truth is, even the very strongest Christians sometimes fail and fall as we will learn in our Bible Story. (10 minutes) AN INTERACTIVE BIBLE STORY FOR EVERY GENERATION Jesus Rebukes Peter Based on: Mark 8:31-35 To Teach Adults Separately: See the Supplemental Leader Instructions for teaching Adult Bible Study. SS LG - Page 4

To Teach Preschoolers Separately: It is best for preschoolers to hear this story in the main UIM SS group, but you can read each verse to preschoolers and ask them to listen and repeat the last word you say each time you stop Then, stop randomly as many times as it takes to hold their attention. Conclude with the conclusion at the end of the Bible Story. Don t hesitate to ask preschoolers a few of the questions at the end of the story that review points you have taught from the story. If they do not know the answer, repeat the question and the answer and help them repeat the answer. See instructions below for presenting this story to preschoolers along with the main UIM SS. To Teach the main UIM SS Group: USE THESE BASIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR ALL GENERATIONS: Remind generations that Bible Stories come from the Bible, which is God s Word. In each story, God, Himself, is speaking to us. God is the most wonderful story teller on earth, and He tells the greatest stories ever told. You Will Need: To reproduce the same verse for each member in each family group using the Bible Story Verse Pages found at the end of this Lesson. Use a paper cutter to quickly cut verses apart. Paper clip one stack of the same verses together for each family group. IN A LARGE GROUP: Assign each family group one verse of the Bible Story. Then hand out one copy of their group s assigned verse for each member to each helper. For Preschoolers: Give a copy of the verse to members who cannot read to keep them involved. If you have more than five family groups, assign some groups the same verse. If you have less than five groups, assign some groups more than one verse or simply read extra verses yourself. IN SMALL FAMILY GROUPS: Instruct helpers to follow the instructions printed below in their Helper s Guides:! Help your group do as many of the following things as possible until the large group leader tells everyone to stop: 1. Put their assigned verse into their own words. 2. Explain in their own words what their assigned verse is saying to them. 3. Simply say what their verse means to them.! As members share things about their group s verse, choose one thing you heard from your members to share with the large group.! Finally, help your group listen to the large group leader to learn how to tell this Bible Story. IN A LARGE GROUP! First, out of order, call out the number of each verse one at time and ask each group to read their assigned verse all together. For Preschoolers: Instruct groups to help those who cannot read by reading a few words of their assigned verse at a time so these members can repeat these words and help read their group s verse.! After each verse is read, ask helpers to share one thing their group learned from their verse.! After all verses have been read out of order, call out the numbers of the verses for this story in numerical order to tell the story one more time. Bible Story Conclusion: Say: In this Bible Story, the disciple Peter did not want Jesus to die. Jesus knew that would mean people could not be saved and live forever. So, Jesus corrected Peter and told everyone who desires to be His disciple to give up their lives or everything that keeps them from believing because all who do so for His sake will be saved and live forever. The Bible Story in Mark 8:31-35 is printed below FYI only. For Adult Bible Study, read or ask volunteers to read these verses directly from the Bible 31 And he [Jesus] began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man. 34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. SS LG - Page 5

As time allows, ask the following questions: See the Supplemental Leader Instructions for age specific instructions for asking these questions. 1. Who had to suffer many things, be rejected, and be killed? Mark 8:31. Answer: The Son of Man. This name tells all who read it that Jesus would suffer as a man. It was extremely important that the disciples then and it is important that we today see the path of Messiahship, where Jesus needed to go, what He would give up or deny Himself of in order to save the world, because it shows His love for mankind. His love for us draws us to Him and strengthens us to deny ourselves and follow Him. Discuss how knowing how much Jesus loves us helps us stand firm in our faith, deny ourselves, and follow Him. 2. What did Jesus say He would have to suffer in verse 31? Answer: Many things. We know that Jesus suffered death upon the cross as we read in Acts 3:18. But to suffer many things included far more than His actual death. Read Hebrews 5:7-8. Many things carries the agony of knowing from the beginning that He would suffer, die, and descend into hell to take on the punishment for our sins, the punishment we deserve. The cross was the culmination of a life of suffering for the Lord. Discuss how understanding ALL that Jesus suffered for us helps us establish Christian priorities that give our faith and lives balance. 3. Who did Jesus say would reject the Son of Man? Mark 8:31 Answer: The elders, chief priests, and scribes or teachers of the law. The elders were lay leaders of the Sanhedrin, a ruling body in Israel. The chief priests were Sadducees, Pharisees, and the high priestly families who were teachers of the law, Jewish scholars professionally trained in Old Testament teachings. They scrutinized Jesus claims and then they deliberately rejected Him without proof or reason. Their rejection led the people to reject Him and that is the danger of following man rather than God because it can lead to eternal death. Discuss how following God rather than man can keep us from falling into sin and eternal death. 4. What did Jesus say He would do after three days? Mark 8: 31 Answer: Rise again. This was the first time Jesus spoke of His resurrection. His disciples truly did not understand what He was telling them. They believed the Messiah was coming to live and save them in their earthly strife, not their eternal life. They had lived with the Lord. They had heard Him preach and teach. They witnessed miracles. Yet, their faith was lacking. They did not understand Jesus Words, God s Words. Here we begin to see how important faith is to not only believing, but understanding all that God has done and continues to do through Christ for each person s faith and life. Discuss how faith that does not have understanding can keep us from establishing Christian priorities that give our faith and lives balance. 5. Whom did Peter rebuke? Note: The word rebuke means to criticize, disapprove, or fault. Mark 8:32. Answer: Jesus. Peter had the wrong idea. He still believed Jesus was the Messiah who would save His people in much the same way kings of old saved their people from their enemies. But Jesus was the King of kings. He was the suffering Servant of Isaiah 52 and 53. However, in this story, God s Anointed One was not who Peter thought He should be. When we think about it even today, it s inconceivable and terribly wrong that the Messiah would have to endure the suffering Jesus was speaking of and indeed suffered to save His people. Yet, only the Messiah Jesus came to be could save us. Discuss how the Messiah Jesus came to be is able to help us establish Christian priorities and balance. 6. Whom did Jesus rebuke? Mark 8:33. Answer: Peter. Peter believed the Messiah came to rule the world, not be killed. Jesus had to correct Peter. It was critical that Peter and the disciples knew how Jesus would save because Jesus was leaving earth and His disciples would have to share how He would save. Discuss how knowing Jesus died and rose and is living and reigning in heaven saves. SS LG - Page 6

7. To whom did Jesus say, Get behind Me, Satan! Mark 8:33. Answer: Peter. No sterner rebuke fell on any Pharisee than on this disciple of Christ. Peter was not speaking the mind of God revealed by the Holy Spirit, but the mind of the enemy; so Peter could be addressed as Satan. Jesus had faced the temptation to avoid the cross in the wilderness and had overcome it. For Peter to suggest that Jesus not suffer and die was purely human thinking and sinful, not divine. Discuss all the ways human thinking keeps us from establishing Christian priorities and balance. 8. Did Peter have in mind the things of God or the things of men? Mark 8:33. Answer: The things of men. Peter s mind needed to be on the things of God because Peter needed to carry out God s will. Only those whose minds remain focused on things of God are able to establish healthy priorities and balance and carry out God s will. It is because even strong believers like Peter can fail to keep their minds focused on God that all believers must constantly pray, read and study God s Word, and attend Worship. Our God s Word For Us Today passage warns against thinking we are so strong in our faith that we do not need to pray, read God s Word, and Worship Him at every opportunity. Cue everyone to say it: Therefore let anyone who thinks... Discuss all the ways prayer, God s Word, and Worship keep our minds on the things of God. 9. Whom does Jesus invite Peter, His disciples, and us to follow? Mark 8:34. Answer: Him. It was essential that Peter then and we now understand what Christ was saying, otherwise Peter could not and we cannot be Christ s disciples. It is, after all, as we answer Christ s call to make disciples of all nations that we bring people to Him for faith that saves in heaven and helps believers establish healthy priorities and balance on earth, faith that is able to deny self and follow Jesus. Discuss or review how to deny self so that we can follow Jesus. 10. What does Jesus tell His disciples and us we must lose if we want to save our lives? Mark 8:35. Answer: Our lives for His sake. Jesus warns that to follow Him means to deny our natural desires for ourselves and not only follow Him, but take up His cross, willingly submit our lives to the will of the Father because that is what Jesus did. Once again, this total submission to God is the only way we can be His disciples ( Luke 14:27). In this lesson, we are learning to get rid of anything and everything that keeps us from God, from doing His will, from thinking of the things of God. However, it is not because of what we do, but what Christ has done for us, suffered, died, and rose again, that we are able to receive God s Spirit and power to deny self, follow Jesus, and place God first in our lives. Discuss how losing our lives for Christ or taking up Jesus cross and doing God s will, not our own, helps to establish priorities and balance that grow healthy generations body and soul. (3 minutes) BIBLE STORY Review/Application Faith to Follow Jesus You Will Need: One ESV Bible with Romans 10:17 marked. IN A LARGE GROUP:! ASK: How do we receive faith to follow Christ? Allow answers that come from the lesson like through prayer, reading God s Word, attending Worship and Sunday School, etc. Then say: While it is true that faith comes as we do these things, faith does not come because we do these things. Faith is a free gift from God and we do not receive it because of anything we have done or ever can do. We receive it because Jesus suffered and died on the cross and rose again.! At the same time and as we learned in this lesson, especially in our Bible Story, our faith needs to be strengthened lest we fall as our God s Word For Us Today passages warns. Cue everyone to say it: Therefore let anyone who thinks... SS LG - Page 7

! So, we absolutely need to pray, read God s Word, and Worship Him, but nothing will come of anything we do without Christ. Romans 10:17 explains it well. Read or have a volunteer read it directly from the Bible - So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. We cannot have faith unless we hear, but we can only hear through the word of Christ, through His power that makes our hearing and understanding and believing possible. It is through Christ that God s Holy Spirit gives us faith that is able to deny ourselves, take up the cross of Christ, and follow Him. LESSON CONCLUSION: Say: Denying ourselves and following Jesus is both a sign of our faith and the result of it. And our faith will stand firm and we will not fall when our minds are filled with things of God. Doing God s will, praying, worshiping Him, and studying His Word will flow naturally from our faith and by this same faith, healthy Christian priorities and balance will be established in us. As we pass all of these on, healthy Christian priorities and balance will grow holy, healthy generations as each lesson in this Series will make even more clear to us. (15 minutes) Refer to Craft Instructions at the end of this Lesson. TEACHABLE CRAFT HAND OUT TAKE HOME ACTIVITY! Make one copy for every family represented.! See the Supplemental Leader Instructions for information about how to use this Take Home Activity. (2 minutes) CLOSING PRAYER Pray in a large group. See the Supplemental Leader Instructions for additional help to lead this closing prayer. IN A LARGE GROUP: Repeat the Active Litany with or without the actions. SS LG - Page 8

Take Home Activity IMPORTANT: This Take Home Activity is just as important as the lesson. Everything taught in UIM SS, but especially the Bible Story, needs to be talked about again at home so that lessons can take root and be of greater help and strength to the faith and lives of all generations. Please feel free to make copies and share it with others to help them in their faith and lives. In this difficult world, faith is a powerful gift to pass on to help and strengthen others now and for generations. 58-SS-01 LESSON ONE Stand So You Don t Fall This week, if you have not already done so as part of your UIM congregational memory work program, inwardly digest the God s Word For Us Today passage for this Lesson. Read it every day. Read it to those who cannot read. Recite it to each other. Type or print it out, and place it in your purse, wallet, on your desk, kitchen table, refrigerator door, night stand, anywhere and everywhere you will see it and read it constantly. Discuss with family and friends how these words from God strengthen you in faith and help you in your everyday lives. Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. 1 Corinthians 10:12 Read and discuss the Bible Story for this lesson personally and with your family, especially the small children. With older family members, study the biblical account of this story in Mark 8:31-35 and read the accompanying study verses: Ezekiel 33:7-10; 1 Corinthians 10:1-13; and Luke 13:1-9 Discuss how these accompanying verses help you deny self and follow Christ, who will help you stand firm in your faith and not fall. Practice what this lesson teaches by doing the following: Seek God first (Make Him Your Priority). Everything else will fall into place (Balance). Physical Action Physically plan and take action to get rid of everything that keeps you from seeking God first so you can give Him priority. Spiritual Action Pray, read God s Word, and attend Worship and Sunday School. Denying ourselves and following Jesus is both a sign of our faith and the result of it, faith that stands firm and does not change because our God does not change. Our minds become filled with the things of God. Doing God s will, praying, worshiping Him, and studying His Word all become a natural outpouring of our thanks and praise for all He has done for us and they establish healthy Christian priorities and balance in us. As we pass these on, healthy priorities and balance grow healthy generations. Permission to reproduce this UIM Resource is given to the ordering congregation ONLY and is not transferable. 10 A Teachable Craft (15 minutes) OBJECTIVE: God Seeking Missile Help generations seek God for strength of faith to establish priorities and balance that help them stand and not fall. 58-SS-01 LESSON ONE Supplies: - Missile and launching pad pattern - Cardboard or cardstock - Crayons - Glue - Paper fasteners - Scissors for those who can cut safely - Sharp object to punch a hole for those who can use it safely. Instructions: Ahead of Time: Reproduce one missile and launching pad found at the end of this lesson for each participant. Cut cardboard into squares or circles larger than the launching pad. You may also want to punch holes in the circles and cut out launching pads and missiles for those who cannot do so. Note: Remember to ask other members of your congregation or UIM SS to help you. It is a great way to get more generations involved in UIM SS! 1. Instruct those who can cut safely to cut out the launching pad circle and missile for themselves and also for those who cannot cut safely if this was not done ahead of time. Instruct those who cannot cut safely to color their missiles and launching pads when they are not being cut out. 2. Color launching pad and missile. 3. Glue launching pad to cardboard. 4. Use a sharp object: scissors, nail, etc..to punch a hole in the circle located in the middle of the missile. Push the tip of a paper fastener through the hole in the middle of the launching pad circle glued to the cardboard. Spread the ends of the fastener apart underneath the cardboard to secure the missile to the launching pad, leaving at least 1/4 inch of the paper fastener above the cardboard so the missile has room to spin. Be sure to push the missile spinner right to the top of the fastener where it will spin more easily. See figure one. CONCLUSION: Invite generations to launch their missiles by spinning their missiles to seek God s Word and read the passage closest to where their missile lands to strengthen their faith and eventually memorize the passage for continued strength to stand and not fall. Then, remind generations one more time that denying ourselves and following Jesus is both a sign of our faith and the result of it, faith that stands firm and does not change because our God does not change. Our minds become filled with the things of God. Doing God s will, praying, worshiping Him, and studying His Word all become a natural outpouring of our thanks and praise for all He has done for us and they establish healthy Christian priorities and balance in us.
