Paul is now getting into the organization of the church Primarily what are the qualifications for a pastor? What are the qualification for a ministry leader? 1 Timothy 3:1 (NKJV) 3 This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. The word bishop is episkopos and it is better translated overseer and it includes being a protector, watching over, an onlooker In the Greek culture, the gods were the episkopoi They watched over men and intervened when man needed protecting The Greeks applied this concept to everyday life The captain of a ship was the overseer of the ship and it s cargo Women were overseers over young married couples Market overseers were called to judge between fair business dealings and improper business dealings Paul applies the Greek concept of an overseer to the local church If a man (no offense to the ladies, but it is a singular pronoun in the masculine form referring to male leadership) desires to be the overseer of a church he desires a good work it s a good thing But here are the qualificaitons 1 Timothy 3:2 7 (NKJV) 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; 3 not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; 4 one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence 5 (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?); 6 not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. 7 Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. Paul says a Pastor must be blameless o A Pastor must not be vulnerable to attack or criticism with regards to the list of qualifications Paul is going to mention He must be the husband of one wife o There are those who say one wife period or one wife at a time

o If you are a pastor and your wife dies, you remain single o I don t think that is what Paul means, I would agree with one wife at a time o If your wife dies, you are free to marry again o However, if you commit adultery as a pastor and are divorced as a result of your unfaithfulness you should never be allowed in the pulpit o Proverbs 6:32-33 says if a man commits adultery, his reproach will not be wiped away o If your reproach will not be wiped away, how can you be above reproach? He must be hospitable which is the ability to make guests feel welcomed He must be able to teach which is the ability to impart knowledge or a skill to others He must not be given to wine o Pastor Chuck taught that Pastors are not to drink and thus he would not allow anyone in his pulpit who was known as a drinker He must not be violent, not be a bully or someone who attacks others He must not be greedy for money He must be gentle which means what is fitting, right or equitable He must not be quarrelsome which speaks of someone who is a peacemaker and not hostile to others He must not be covetous which means to desire what God has given someone else He must rule his own house well speaking of leadership and his ability to lead his family o The fruit of his leadership will show in the reverence and submission of his children o For if he can t rule his own house, how can he rule God s house? o Now this doesn t mean his children are perfect o It simply means he s done a good job of leading his kids while under his care He must not be a novice speaking of a new convert or a baby Christian o I know someone who hated the term baby Christian because they wanted to see themselves based on their gifting not their maturity o Which is why Paul says lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil

o A new believer will often see success and favor on their lives and take credit for it look at how gifted I am o A mature believer sees success and favor on their lives and realize that every good gift comes from the Father above He must have a good testimony among those who are not believers o I know of someone who would minister in various churches, but their lifestyle wasn t above reproach o When they approached their neighbor and said, hey would you like a Bible the neighbor turned it down o They said we know how you live and we don t want you giving us a Bible you don t believe it because you re not living it Here we have the qualifications for Pastors, overseers Now Paul gives the qualification for ministry leaders or what the Bible calls deacons A deacon is someone who makes sure things get done If you remember in Acts 6 there was a problem with the Hellenistic Jewish widows (Hellenistic Jews were culturally Greek yet fully Jewish) They felt they were being mistreated by the Jews from Jerusalem The apostles told the people to select 7 men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom whom we may appoint over this business This is the first mention of deacons those that took care of the practical business of the church so the pastors could focus on prayer and the ministry of the word That s the difference God brings ministry leaders, deacons to take on the business of the church, the practical things of the church so the Pastors can be free to pray and seek the Lord and teach the Word 1 Timothy 3:8 13 (NKJV) 8 Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, 9 holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. 10 But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless. 11 Likewise, their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13 For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. A deacon must be reverent, dignified, one who commands respect

Not double tongued, not someone who tells a different story to different people in order to tell them what they want to hear or to manipulate them Not given to much wine Pastors are not given to wine, deacons are not given to much wine so deacons can have wine Thus Pastor Chuck would say if you want to drink don t be a pastor, become a deacon Not greedy for money Holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience meaning a deacon needs to born again and is loyal to the word of God But the deacons must also be tested or examined, evaluated to see if they should be trusted with ministry responsibilities So you let them serve under observation and after you ve examined them and you find nothing questionable about them then release them to be ministry leaders Now notice, with deacons Paul brings special attention to the wife He says the wives also must be reverent, dignified, one who commands respect They can t be slanderers, those who attack and undermine the reputation of others The word itself is diabolos and there is a close connection between the demonic and those who slander others Satan is a liar and he lies, kills and destroys Slanderers lie, kill and destroy with their words and no offense to the ladies, but there are times when women get together and gossip and slander against leaders in the church without realizing it There were two ladies that ran into a pastor in town and began to tell them how they heard that I had kicked people out of the church, I was beating on tables, cussing and yelling in a restaurant Now those who know me know that is absolutely ridiculous and this pastor stopped the ladies and said listen the person that told you this is lying to you it s not true If you have a ministry leader with a wife who slanders the other leaders, you can see how it can cause problems in the ministry They must be temperate which means they are not given to extreme behaviors especially in regards to drinking alcohol They must be faithful in all things or better translated in each thing A faithful person is someone who trusts the Lord in every circumstance They continue obeying because they trust the Lord

They serve under leadership because they trust the Lord is leading the leaders of the church Like Pastors, a deacon must be the husband of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. Finally, deacons who serve well over time gain a good reputation in the church and they grow in their boldness in trusting Jesus Deacons, unlike bishops, can include women and men Phoebe, Persis, Tryphaena and Tryphosa are all deaconesses (workers in the Lord) mentioned by Paul in Romans 16 Priscilla was the wife of Aquila and served as a ministry leader in the church at Corinth Paul mentions two women deaconesses in Philippians 4:2-3 who were having a disagreement and he encourages them to work it out Paul instructs older women to teach the younger women in Titus 2 and instructs widows and grandmothers to become intercessors There is a lot of controversy about the role of women in the church With the advent of youtube and online television, there are a number of new outlets for women to expand the influence of their ministry Christianity has always been a liberating force in the lives of women We listed women who led ministries in the New Testament The outpouring of the Spirit on both sons and daughters to prophesy The opportunities in Christ to be a world changing influence are endless However, popularity or talent and giftedness doesn t equal permission or give you the right to violate Biblical practice When it comes to the position of an overseer of a church community, a bishop or what we would call a senior pastor, Paul instructs that women are not to teach or exercise authority over men He is speaking concerning the order of leadership within a church The reason Paul gives for this is Eve. Sin came into the world through Eve because she was deceived Adam made a choice, but Eve was deceived and thus Paul says I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man within the context of church leadership There are so many other things we can look at as well Our church model was built on the temple model with male priests

You don t read any ancient documents from the church mothers all the early documents of the church came from the church fathers Spiritual heritage was passed on through the father, not the mother Thus there is an order that God has established that has nothing to do with popularity or giftedness it has to do with function, how it works So we can have deacons and deaconesses, but we will not have women senior pastors who exercise authority over men Why not? Because Paul says don t do it Really the issue comes down to this culture doesn t influence the Bible, the Bible influences culture When the culture celebrates something the Bible says not to do we don t change what we do to fit the culture, we recognize the culture has gotten far away from God s order And I do have to go back to Eve in the garden God said to Eve of all the fruits of the garden you can eat except this one and Eve wanted that one fruit and so she was open to being deceived Of all the things that a woman can do in the Kingdom of God, to want the one thing that God said is not yours to have I can see why Paul used Eve as the example It s not just that she was deceived, but she craved the one thing God said you can t have I wonder if the women who are pursuing the function of a bishop or overseer are craving the one thing God said they couldn t have and thus are open to deception You re gifted, you deserve this, don t let the men hold you down, be liberated, be free when Christ has already set you free 1 Timothy 3:14 16 (NKJV) 14 These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly; 15 but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory. Paul was in Macedonia and Timothy was in Ephesus Paul is hoping to join Timothy shortly But until he gets there, He writes Timothy concerning order in the church

And he ends the chapter with one of the earliest creeds of the church God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by the angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up in glory 1 Timothy 4:1 5 (NKJV) 4 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, 3 forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; 5 for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. Jesus when asked what will be the sign of your coming said Take heed that no one deceives you Deception is the sign that we are in the Last Days In 2 Thessalonians 2 Paul wrote of the apostasy to come Paul reiterates this in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons The word depart means they once professed to believe, but now they no longer believe this is what the Bible refers to as apostasy How will they depart? By paying attention to seducing spirits, literally vagabond, wandering, roving spirits There is a trend amongst 21 st century Christians to not identify with a church, but to wander I m not part of any one particular church because I m part of the church big C and I just go wherever I feel led (which means wherever I want or wherever I get to do my dog and pony show). Paul says they are giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons Now what s a doctrine of demon? It s any teaching that elevates man and gets you to focus on the talent, the giftedness or the attractiveness of man and not submission to Jesus as Lord It s any teaching that diminishes the Lordship of Jesus Christ and elevates your wishes, your ambitions, your desires to the same level as the Holy Spirit s leading

One of the doctrines of demons is LOVE WINS God loves everyone so nobody goes to hell LOVE WINS Another is God made homosexuals the way they are when research shows that same sex attractions is the result of neglect, abuse or coercion Another doctrine of demons is the Bible is filled with hate speech and thus the Bible should be outlawed Another doctrine of demons is grace plus salvation is free by grace but once you get in you need to add things to it grace plus fill in the blank Another sign is speaking lies in hypocrisy saying one thing and living another or professing innocence when in fact they are intentionally lying Having their conscience seared with a hot iron it s interesting, a person with no conscience is the most believable person you ll meet They will lie to you and you ll believe it because they have no conflict within their soul I ve worked with 2 sociopaths and they were believable They will lay down laws concerning marriage and what foods you eat One of the most damaging teachings in the world is this teaching that says God has the perfect ONE for you so don t get married until you find the perfect ONE that is perfectly in God s WILL all others are BAD It sounds good but it s not TRUE Unfortunately I know many people who are still waiting for that perfect ONE to marry and time goes by, many potential partners come and go and they end up as bitter old people who are mad at God There is a hyper focus over what you eat carbs are bad and there s a generation of people who ate low carb diets who are now developing brain disorders because your brain needs carbs to be healthy It s interesting that as we are in the last days these two issues are prevalent in our society don t marry and abstain from foods Rather Paul says every creature of God is good and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer 1 Timothy 4:6 11 (NKJV) 6 If you instruct the brethren in these things, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed. 7 But reject profane and old wives fables, and exercise yourself toward godliness. 8 For bodily exercise profits

a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. 9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance. 10 For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. 11 These things command and teach. During times of apostasy what are we to carefully follow? Words of Faith and Good Doctrine What are we to reject? Profane and old wives fables it seems like the majority of preaching today is built on a book how to have a successful marriage, how to have successful relationships, how to be happy, how to raise kids You can go to churches where the Bible becomes a launching pad into whatever how to book they ve been reading or writing They will give you their 5 steps or 10 principles but no Bible It s profane, earthly, common knowledge it s not revelation from God Instead of listening to the world s wisdom, do what s godly obey the Bible, you ll get better results than listening to the world s wisdom People talk about living healthy lives, exercising and staying in shape I was criticized because I was fat someone said if you want to be healthy do you listen to your fat friend or your in shape friend But Paul says bodily discipline profits little it s limited in what it can do You can be in shape and still go to hell But godliness is profitable for all things including living a healthy life now Because godliness produces eternal fruit in your life Paul says this is something you can depend on As long as you re living in this life, you are going to labor and suffer reproach because you trust in God Now I hate this verse I thought life gets easier, the blessings bigger, the opportunities greater and I thought the more God loves me the proof is the number of blessings I receive But Paul says don t fool yourself If you trust in the living God, you re going to labor and suffer because the world will hate you, just like it hated Jesus especially in a time of apostasy

So what do we do command and teach people to exercise godliness, to teach that Jesus is the Savior of all men 1 Timothy 4:12 16 (NKJV) 12 Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 13 Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. 14 Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. 15 Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. 16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you. Paul knew there were those who would not respect Timothy because of his youth at this time he s in his 30 s. Thus Paul encourages Timothy to be an example to the believers in word, conduct, love, spirit, faith and purity To give attention to reading, the public reading of scripture To exhortation, which would have been the prophetic teaching of scripture and doctrine which would have included Paul s teachings It would be great if the churches in South Orange County would simply teach the Bible Paul encourages Timothy to not neglect the gift that was imparted by the laying on of hands with the prophetic word from the eldership, the church leaders (pastors) This is something that we are moving towards in our afterglows to have times where the Spirit will reveal how God has empowered various individuals to serve and what He desires to do with them Paul encourages Timothy to meditate on these things meditate on the Word, meditate on the prophetic words that have been spoken To pay attention to himself to keep growing, to keep progressing To pay attention to doctrine and to stay the course, don t deviate from sound doctrine because in doing so you will both save yourself and those who hear you Doctrine is important, what is taught is important and I am concerned for those churches where the Bible isn t taught man s opinion is taught, man s testimony is taught, man s philosophy is taught But not God s Word. God have mercy on that pastor because they are leading the people astray.
