2 SJC 2011 Youth Ministry Missions & OUTREACH Our Belief: The Great Commission is mission possible! A Clear Vision & Purpose: A generation serving with the heart, hands, feet, and mind of Christ! Our Goals: To Connect youth with the love of Christ. To Encourage youth to live a real faith. To Guide youth in pointing others to the Gospel. To be a community Partner extending the impact of our collective Kingdom reach. A Biblical Basis Mark 16:15 (MSG) Then he said, Go into the world. Go everywhere and announce the Message of God s good news to one and all. 2 Corinthians 5:14-21 (MSG) Our firm decision is to work from this focused center: One man died for everyone. That puts everyone in the same boat. He included everyone in his death so that everyone could also be included in his life, a resurrection life, a far better life than people ever lived on their own. Because of this decision we don't evaluate people by what they have or how they look. We looked at the Messiah that way once and got it all wrong, as you know. We certainly don't look at him that way anymore. Now we look inside, and what we see is that anyone united with the Messiah gets a fresh start, is created new. The old life is gone; a new life burgeons! Look at it! All this comes from the God who settled the relationship between us and him, and then called us to settle our relationships with each other. God put the world square with himself through the Messiah, giving the world a fresh start by offering forgiveness of sins. God has given us the task of telling everyone what he is doing. We're Christ's representatives. God uses us to persuade men and women to drop their differences and enter into God's work of making things right between them. We're speaking for Christ himself now: Become friends with God; he's already a friend with you. How? you ask. In Christ. God put the wrong on him who never did anything wrong, so we could be put right with God. Our Firm Decision: Tell everyone what Jesus is doing! 2
3 SJC 2011 Youth Ministry Missions & Outreach January 1, 2011 Dear Partner in Missions and Outreach, Biblically, we understand that God sent forth His Son into the world, and consequently, Christ sends every Believer into the world (Jn. 13: 15, Jn. 20:21, Mk 16:15, Mt. 28:19 Acts 1:8). The idea of being sent forth is evident in local and global missions and outreach. We are being mobilized to benefit a specific people or group for 1-day, 1-week, or for several months. God uses our collective (and diverse) resources, gifts, talents, and abilities by sending us forth to impact the world to His glory! As a ministry, we partner locally with organizations that strive to make a difference in our community by way of monthly service projects and volunteer pairing. Globally, we serve cities, communities, and the church in other nations by working through strategic initiatives. Our mission and outreach projects may focus on supporting educational, revitalization, construction, disaster recovery, agricultural, medical/dental, or any number of other needs. It is not uncommon for teams to participate in multiple service projects during a single mission or outreach opportunity. Underlying any physical requirement is our goal of sharing the Gospel among the individuals we are sent to serve. Our service opportunities may be carried out in urban or rural communities and in cross-cultural contexts, particularly among people who are culturally, ethnically, racially, or economically diverse. Many of our missions and outreach opportunities are designed to be carried out on weekends or to coincide with extended school holidays. Decisions regarding projects and sites are made based upon where we can: Prayerfully practice our vision/purpose Build youth partnership and participation; and in so doing build Christian character Minimize the financial prohibitions. We believe that this year s mission and outreach plan encourages widespread mobilization. In addition to 1- day service projects, you can choose to participate in up to three (3) mission trips. Spring Break Week of Compassion Kids Camp: High School: Mar 13 th -16 th / Middle School: Mar 16 th -19 th St. John youth will partner with the Cornerstone Church of South Dallas during this Week of Compassion. The youth will serve as teachers, coaches, and mentors in Kids Bible Camp at Exline Park. We will spend the night in the Cornerstone mission apartments, utilized by hundreds of youth groups from across the US each year. In the evening, each student will come together for worship/chapel and free time. We will also have a special skate/movie night. 30 HR Famine/Outreach: Apr 15 th -17 th. Hunger kills another child every 10 seconds. SJC Youth will learn about hunger, experience the effects of hunger, then do something to help fight hunger during this 30 HR Famine/Outreach. Students will obtain famine sponsors, spend the night at church (sleeping bags/dorm style), and complete a famine outreach.. Mission Waco: Jun 9 th -12 th On any given day 79,000 men, women, and children will experience homelessness in Texas. St. John youth will be mobilized and trained in partnership with Mission Waco. We will serve Church Under the Bridge (a ministry focused on the homeless and unreached of Waco), a food pantry, and a clothing store. We will spend the night in the mission dorm. There will be great free-time activities! For more detailed information refer to daily mission trip schedule/itinerary or contact Minister Elena Freeman by phone: or elena@sjbcfamily.com. 3
