1 The Anchor THIS WEEK IN MISSION AND MINISTRY Friday, October 21, 2016 Coming up this Week Sunday 10/23 In the morning: 8, 9, & 11 AM Services Forum: Joseph Mole, Director, Emmaus House In the evening Real Love Group 4PM Dinner 5:30, Youth 6PM Tuesday 10/25 Bible Study 10:30AM AA 8PM Wednesday 10/26 Morning Prayer 9AM TOPS 9:30AM Holy Eucharist 6:30PM Friday 10/28 Men s Discussion Group 12 noon IHOP Canton Marketplace INSIDE Adult Forum 2 Parish Life 3 Special Events & Adult Programs 4 Youth 5 Groucho Marx was said to have famously resigned from the exclusive Friar s Club of Beverley Hills with the line I don t want to belong to any club that would accept me as one of its members. In one fell swoop he managed to comfortably look down his own nose at himself. Most of us find other candidates for our condescension. We can imagine without too much surprise the Pharisee holding forth with his elevated status in the temple while keeping a safe distance from the likes of the Tax Collector oozing his sins like wounds before God. Snobbery is hardly uncommon. However, it is that distance which is worth thinking about. We seem comfortable in the distance we mark between each other along ethnic, political, economic, social, or religious categories. As in the parable, these distances are more commonly vastly favored to one (my) side. That can, of course, work co-dependently. One side can declare their superiority and the other side might just as disastrously concede the point. It is disastrous because the distance created becomes proportionate to our distance from God. Love of neighbor, we are reminded again, is intimately intertwined with the love of God. Groucho may move us in the better direction. He points us to an awareness that we all fall short and we all share a need for love and forgiveness which God gives to all of us freely. That not only begins to narrow the gap between humans being and, consequently, between ourselves and God but also gives us cause to celebrate together. We can stand together praising God for the gift of his love for us and the gift of loving each other. We can stand together worshipping a generous God with generous hearts. Blessings! Jamie+ The Rev. For All Saints Sunday we will compile a list of names of those family members and friends who have passed on for special prayers. Cooperative Ministries: MUST Habitat for Humanity Path to Shine We support: Camp Mikell Holy Comforter Emmaus House South American Missionaries Bethesda Community Clinic Hurricane devastation in Haiti and North Carolina: Episcopal Relief & Development is working around the clock to provide support to our dioceses and local partners as they assess damage in the affected areas. We are currently helping muchneeded support to Haiti and Cuba, as well as those places affected in the United States. In Haiti, our support will enable local partners such as the Bishop Tharp Institute (BTI) to provide food and water to displaced people sheltering on the school's campus. BTI is located in Les Cayes, one of the most hard-hit areas of Haiti's southern peninsula. In the United States, we are supporting dioceses along the southern Atlantic coast, providing assistance to local leaders who are reaching out in their communities. After several days of heavy rain, flood levels continue to rise in areas of South Carolina and eastern North Carolina, stranding large numbers of people and prompting evacuations. Church partners are monitoring the situation locally and communicating as able regarding property damage and community members with emergency needs. Many of you have asked what you can do to help those so greatly affected by the storm, and we are eternally grateful for this. Please make an urgent gift, in whatever amount you can, to our Hurricane Matthew Response Fund today. This is just the beginning of a long recovery-and our brothers and sisters in need are counting on us. Thank you and blessings to all. Weight Loss Group meets in Davis Hall every Wednesday morning at 9:30AM, program and discussion group at 10. Meetings last an hour or less. If you have a few pounds to lose we would love for you to join us. Fees are very reasonable, first meeting is free. For information, call Barbara Tilley at or come on to the meeting at 9:30AM on Wednesdays.
