2 Nursery Worker Advertisement As we have recently been blessed with a bunch of little ones, we are focusing on restarting the nursery. The church has budgeted funds for a steady nursery worker, and would also welcome volunteers from the parish. If you know anyone who is interested in a regular job for a few hours on Sunday morning, or if you could volunteer as part of a regular schedule of nursery staffers, please talk with Father Adam. (All nursery staff and volunteers will receive Safeguarding Training and need to obtain appropriate clearances.) Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Over the past month, a royal wedding reminded us of the gifts and power of our Anglican tradition and heritage. We are a church that knows how to use extravagant pageantry, beautiful spaces, inspiring music, ancient tradition, and modern expressions to lift people s spirits in worship. Presiding Bishop Michael Curry s sermon reminded us that we also have a profound message for the rest of the world. We are grounded in the power of love that was made incarnate for us in the person of Jesus Christ. That love of God is sacrificial, redemptive, and transformational. That wondrous love was shown in Jesus life, death, and resurrection, and through Jesus Christ nothing can ever separate us from that love. God s dream of a beloved community is the call of all of us, and all our churches and governments and institutions, to live in the way of God s love. Pentecost and Trinity Sunday offered their own expressions of how that love manifests itself in the life of God and the outpouring of that life into God s church. We also see that love passed on as the school year comes to an end and young people take the heritage of love that they have learned at St. John s and live it out wherever they are called to go in the future. We see that love manifest in the hospitality of our outreach programs, in the deep care shown to those who are sick and infirm, and in the friendships deepened through our church life. Join Us For The Diocese of Northwestern Pennsylvania Diocesan Picnic Sunday, June 17 Registration: 10:00-10:50am (Redeem ticket for Waldameer wristband) Service: 11:00am The bishop will preach and celebrate. It is hoped and expected that those coming to the picnic would also attend the worship service. Tickets are $24.00 per person (with a $100 maximum per immediate family), which includes, food (following the worship service until 4:00pm. Must have a wristband to eat), rides (12-10pm) and Water World (1-7pm - swimwear required). Tickets must be ordered and paid for in advance. Children 3 and younger are free but need to reserve a ticket. To purchase your tickets see Tina during the week in the office. June 3rd is the last day to purchase tickets. Ticket sales must be done in advance using only tickets that are obtained from the Diocese. No sale of tickets will be permitted at the park. 3 Library News Douglas P. Warwick, a grandson of Charles Frederick Owsley, donated The Owsley Family in England Then and Now a pictorial book he created. Eight members of the Owsley family traveled in England to learn more about the history of their family. The book was given in memory of Florence Phillips Owsley, who our reredos and high altar were dedicated to in The library thanks him for this very nice addition to our library. We have experienced a love and a beauty that are rooted in God and are desperately needed by many in our community. Over the summer, let us be intentional about ways that individually and as a church we can share those gifts with others and let them know that power of God s abundant love. This seminar allows you to refresh your driving techniques, regain lost confidence, and develop a positive driving attitude. 4 Congratulations to St. John s 2018 Graduates The class of 2018 is ready to venture forward into the real world. This move is scary, right parents? St. John s is proud to have been a part of this journey ahead for the following young people: Tobe Ezi-ashi, Spencer Ference and Julia Trambley. Tobe Ezi-ashi, son of Joan Ezi-ashi, graduates in June from Hickory High School. Tobe played soccer in high school and lettered in the sport. During his junior year, he was voted Homecoming King While attending St. John s, he participated in Christmas plays and continues to cherish those moments. He will be attending Duquesne University in the fall to major in Business/Project and Supply Chain Management. THANK YOU ST. JOHN S! Thanks to the incredible generosity of the folks here at St. John s, our Tween Sunday School Class was able to raise enough money to purchase 50 duffel bags from Together We Rise, to be given to children entering the foster system. In addition, we were also given extras such as t-shirts, socks and snacks to put in the bags. 25 of the bags went to The Bair Foundation, New Wilmington, and 25 went to The Adoption Connection in Beaver. Both organizations work with foster children and adoptive families, and are very glad to have the duffels to pass out to children in need. This was TRULY an effort of the entire church, so to all the folks who bought candy bars (LOTS of candy bars) made donations of money, shirts, socks, and snacks, and came out to decorate the bags, we thank you! McKenzie Ulan, Cheyenne Felix, Abbey Baron, Cecelia Ward, Madison Herald, and Mrs. P. Spencer Ference son of Charles and Paula Ference will be graduating from Mercer High School this year. Spencer has participated in many activities at St. Johns. He has served as an Acolyte, is a member of the Altar Guild and has worked many meals as the kitchen dishwasher. His fondest memories at St. John s are going to church camp, Sunday School, mission trip to NY and being on the altar on Sunday. 5 Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dodd Frank Dodd recently married Emily Marsch on March 24 in a ceremony at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lancaster, PA. Frank was our Organist and Director of Music in the year between Paula Kubik s retirement and the hiring of Ron Gracilla. It was a teaching job that swept Frank away from St. John s to Lancaster, PA. While in Lancaster, Frank and Emily met at Westminster Church, where Frank was also serving as the part time Handbell Choir Director. Careers took both Frank and Emily to Philadelphia in Frank is now the Band Director at Delaware County Christian School in Newtown Square, PA and Emily works as a Spanish Interpreter at Einstein Medical Center in North Philadelphia. At Mercer, Spencer was a member of the Robotics Team, Band, Ski Club & Track. He is a 2yr letterman in Baseball and 3 year letterman in Soccer. He was also voted Erie Region First Team Goalie for 2 years. After school Spencer will be attending Penn State University in pursuit of an Mechanical Engineering Degree. Finally, he would like to thank everyone at St Johns who has helped him along his way to becoming a fine young man. Julia Trambley, daughter of The Rev. Dr. Adam and Jane Trambley, graduates from Sharon High School. Julia is grateful for her time at St. John s. She has gotten to go to New York City for a mission trip and use her gifts singing in the choir. Being a part of the Episcopalian denomination also has taught her to respect the dignity and rights of every human being. In the fall of 2018, she will be attending Barnard College of Columbia University. While there, she plans on majoring in History with a focus in World Religion. She has always been interested in Greek mythology, and a few years ago she began to learn about other mythologies, such as Roman, Egyptian, and Norse mythologies. Her interest in ancient world mythologies eventually lead her to begin learning more about Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. Through her studies, she realized there was a lot she did not know about her own faith. She became fascinated with the history of Christianity and how it spread throughout Europe and the world. She realized that this topic is one that she wanted to pursue through college and for the rest of her life.
