Bethlehem Lutheran Church Old Olga Rd. Fort Myers, FL Phone: (239) Week 49 Friday December 05, Thursday December 11, 2014 Don't test God's Patience... He will Return!! Sunday, December 7 is The Second Sunday of Advent... My 9am Sunday sermon at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Old Olga Rd., Ft. Myers, FL (and my 5:30pm Saturday, December 6 worship message at Faith Lutheran Church, 3040 SW 11th Ct., Ft. Lauderdale, FL) is drawn from this weekend's Epistle lesson, 2 Peter 3:8-14. "But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.but the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.that day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with Him." "But the day of the Lord will come like a thief." 1
Pastor s Weekly Devotion (Cont.) Friday December 05, Thursday December 11, 2014 That's a bit ominous, isn't it? But ever since the time of the early Christian Church... this has been the message of the Advent season! There is no doubt as you read St. Paul's letters and St. Peter's letters... THEY BELIEVE THAT JESUS WILL BE RETURNING SOON!! Soooo... what do you do to "PREPARE" for Jesus' return?... Scripture makes it...very CLEAR... "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:19 & 20) The Sunday morning Adult Bible Study at Bethlehem Lutheran, in Ft. Myers, has been walking trough a book written by a Lutheran Pastor, Rev. Greg Finke, "Joining Jesus on His Mission". Rev. Finke again and again in this powerful book, reminds believers... NOT TO MAKE FOLLOWING JESUS DIFFICULT AND ARDUOUS!!...Just follow Him in His mission... Rev. Finke says it well... Jesus will open the doors for your Christian outreach... Follow Him through those doors... AND SHARE THE LOVE OF JESUS TO ALL YOU COME IN CONTACT WITH!! This weekend we will sing the hymn "Fling Wide the Door" (vs. 1) "Fling wide the door, unbar the gate; The King of glory comes in state; The Lord of lords and King of kings, The Savior of the world who brings, His great salvation to the earth. So raise a shout of holy mirth. And praise our God and Lord,Creator, Spirit Word." Sooooo...let's get busy... IT'S ADVENT!!... and follow Jesus in His mission!!... Let's use every occasion Jesus gives to each of us... TO INTRODUCE PEOPLE TO JESUS!!. 2
Bethlehem Lutheran Church Old Olga Rd. Fort Myers, FL Phone: (239) Week 50 Friday December 12, Thursday December 18, 2014 How Can I be Joyful... Always?? Sunday, December 14 is The Third Sunday of Advent... My 9am Sunday message at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Old Olga Rd., Ft. Myers, FL (and my 5:30pm Saturday, December 6 message at Faith Lutheran Church, 3040 SW 11th Ct., Ft. Lauderdale, FL) is drawn from this weekend's Epistle lesson, 1 Thessalonians 5: (St. Paul writes) Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God s will for you in Christ Jesus." (vss, 16-18). It is often said, the St. Paul shares an AMAZING amount of Spiritual Direction in these three verses from his first letter to the Christians in Thessalonica. Two of these Scripture verses are also among the shortest verses in the whole Bible... "Rejoice always" (vs. 16)... "Pray continually" (vs. 17). Over the years, as I worked with young people (and adults)... when I would ask them to choose a Scripture verse to memorize, the above two verses would always be VERY popular!! The Scripture verse "Jesus wept" (John 11:33) was also one of their favorites!! 1
Pastor s Weekly Devotion (Cont.) Friday December 12, Thursday December 18, 2014 Of course, I've heard a few pastors, on the occasion participating in a new Pastor's Installation service, when they are asked to share a Scripture text with their personal blessing, upon the newly installed pastor (and they haven't prepared a Scripture text to share), use one of the verses listed above. :-) Are you looking for a personal mission statement, taken from this weekend's Epistle lesson... "Rejoice always, pray continually and give thanks always" One of the hymns we will sing this weekend, is the Christmas favorite "Joy to the World" (vs. 1) "Joy to the World, the Lord has come! Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, And Heaven and nature sing, And Heaven and nature sing, And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing." "Let every heart prepare Him room!!" How is that going this Advent season??... Is there plenty of room in your heart for Jesus?? Another hymn we are singing is "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee" (vs. 1) "Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love; hearts unfold like flowers before thee, opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away. Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!" Soooooo... how is it possible to be joyful, always?? As the above hymn says so beautifully..... May we continually pray that Jesus fill us with the light of day!! Please join fellow believers in worship this weekend... and let's all get a "fill-up" of... JOY!! 2
Bethlehem Lutheran Church Old Olga Rd. Fort Myers, FL Phone: (239) Week 51 Friday December 19, Thursday December 25, 2014 What can we learn from Mary?? Sunday, December 21 is The Fourth Sunday of Advent... My 9am Sunday message at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Old Olga Rd., Ft. Myers, FL (and my 5:30pm Saturday, December 20, message at Faith Lutheran Church, 3040 SW 11th Ct., Ft. Lauderdale, FL) is drawn from this weekend's Gospel lesson, Luke 1: (after the angel, Gabriel, had told Mary that she would be the mother of the baby, Jesus, Mary said) "How will this be, Mary asked the angel, since I am a virgin?" The angel answered, The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail" "I am the Lord s servant, Mary answered. May your word to me be fulfilled. Then the angel left her." (vss ) This weekend's sermon will ask a very important question... What can we learn from Mary? The answer is... MANY, MANY THINGS!! 1
Pastor s Weekly Devotion (Cont.) Friday December 19, Thursday December 25, 2014 But, perhaps the most important thing that we learn from Mary is... her willingness to do what God wants her to do!! We will be singing a number of Christmas songs this weekend... One that truly points to this Gospel lesson is, "What Child is This?" (vs. 1) "What Child is this who, laid to rest, On Mary's lap is sleeping? Whom Angels greet with anthems sweet, While shepherds watch are keeping. This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and Angels sing; Haste, haste, to bring Him laud, The Babe, the Son of Mary." Can you imagine being given the "terrifying" opportunity to... CHANGE THE WORLD?? That's what Mary was being asked to do. Would you be... WILLING?? We will also sing "Angels from the Realms of Glory" (vs. 1) "Angels from the realms of glory, Wing your flight over all the earth, Ye, who sang creations story, Now proclaim Messiah's birth. Come and worship, come and worship, Worship Christ the newborn King." Many have been intrigued by this weekend's amazing Gospel lesson... This Biblical account has...an angel... drama... suspense... all wrapped aroung the story of a young woman being asked to be a part of... GOD'S SOLUTION FOR THE CURSE OF SIN, IN THE WORLD! Sooooo... WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM MARY? We learn how to "go and do"... WHERE GOD WANTS US TO "GO AND DO"!! 2
Bethlehem Lutheran Church Old Olga Rd. Fort Myers, FL Phone: (239) Week 52 Friday December 26, Thursday January 01, 2015 Haste, Haste, to bring Him Laud! Sunday, December 28 is The First Sunday after Christmas... My 9am Sunday message at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Old Olga Rd., Ft. Myers, FL is drawn from this weekend's Gospel lesson, Luke 2: And my 5:30pm Saturday, December 27, message at Faith Lutheran Church, 3040 SW 11th Ct., Ft. Lauderdale, FL will..."by request"... be using my Christmas Eve worship service (done at Bethlehem Lutheran, Ft. Myers). We will focus on St. Luke's Christmas account, Luke 2:1-20. "And they (the shepherds) came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them." (vss 16-18, 20). KJV One doesn't think about shepherds doing anything very hurriedly. If there ever was a "slowpaced" profession... it was being a shepherd!! 1
Pastor s Weekly Devotion (Cont.) Friday December 26, Thursday January 01, 2015 But yet, St. Luke shares in his "beloved" account of Jesus birth in Bethlehem... that the shepherds acted with...haste!! My prayer is that our preparations for Advent and Christmas, and our time of worship during Advent and Christmas...will have given us a sense of... HASTE!! This weekend we will sing one of the best loved Christmas hymns, "Joy to the World" (vs. 1) "Joy to the world! The Lord is come. Let earth receive her King! Let every heart prepare Him room. And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven, and heaven and nature sing." In both of my worship services, on this upcoming last weekend of the year SOME EXCITING THINGS ARE HAPPENING!! On Sat. eve. (Dec. 27) at Faith Lutheran, Ft. Lauerdale... after a number of people have requested this event... A Gloria Dei "long-timers" (and others) potluck dinner and Christmas party will take place in Faith Lutheran's Fellowship Hall, immediately after the 5:30pm worship service... A number of folks are looking forward to reconnecting with old friends! On Sun. morning, 9am, (Dec. 28) at Bethlehem Lutheran, Ft. Myers, we will be celebrating the baptism of Willow Amber Steinard. Willow is the grand niece of Helen Roenfeldt, a former fellow staff member at Gloria Dei. Amber's parents live fairly close to Bethlehem Lutheran Church... It will be wonderful to share Jesus' welcome to Willow into His family, the Holy Christian Church. WHAT AN EXCITING WAY TO CLOSE OUT THE YEAR, 2014!! How will your "haste" doing during this Christmas season?? Why not close out the year, 2014, by worshiping with fellow believers, on the last weekend of May the Lord put some... HASTE... into our witness! SEE YOU IN CHURCH!! 2
