EMERALD ECHO Parish Newsletter St. Bride of Kildare, Pitt Meadows St. Columba of Iona, Halfmoon Bay The Traditional Anglican Church of Canada Vol. 4 No. 3: Whitsuntide 2013 Michael Ramsey on Christian Unity (2) Archbishop Michael Ramsey paid a solemn visit to Pope Paul VI on 23 March The above is a photograph of his reception in the Sistine Chapel. On 24 March 1966, a Common Declaration was signed by Pope Paul VI and the Archbishop in a ceremony held at the Basilica of St Paul outside the Walls. With our thanks (again) to Bishop David Chislett SSC at his fministry blog. ( %20Ramsey) Here is another passage from Chapter 4 ( The Meaning of Unity ) of Michael Ramsey s The Gospel and the Catholic Church: We must investigate the nature of this unity, and ask what is its relation to the Gospel. [1] The meaning of unity is seen first of all in the word ekklesia, which our English Bible translates church, In the Greek Bible from the book of Deuteronomy onward, ekklesia is the normal rendering of the Hebrew quahal, the congregation of lsrael. Hence the use of the word by the Christian communities is striking; in many cities of the dispersion the Christians have been banished from the synagogues, and yet (no reader of the Septuagint could fail to see the audacious claim involved) they are themselves the ekklesia of God. To them belong the promises and privileges of the Israel of God, and their unity is a unity of race. This race, drawn from Jews and Gentiles and yet one race in Christ, is formed in many local communities, and the important question arises: What is the relation between the local communities and the whole race? The word ekklesia is used in the New Testament both for the local community and for the race as a whole, and except in the Epistle to the Ephesians, the former use is far more frequent. Does it then follow that the local community is primary, and the important starting point? No, for the very word ekklesia forbids us to think of any merely local community; the ekklesia in a place is the one race as existing in that place, e.g., the ekklesia of Corinth is the one called-out-race of God that exists in Corinth, as in many other places. The one race exists first, precedes the local ekklesia, and is represented by it. This fact was well put by P. T. Forsyth: The total Church was not made up by adding the local churches together, but the local church was a church through representing then and there
the total Church... It was one Church in many manifestations; it was not many churches in one convention... The great Church is not the agglutination of local churches, but their prius;... the local church was not a church, but the Church... the totality of all Christians flowing to a certain spot, and emerging there. ## Thus the use of the word ekklesia in itself tells us an important truth about unity. The one universal Church is primary, the local society expresses the life and unity of the whole. (2) Behind this unity of the one race there stand the historic events that created it, and the unity is seen to be in a real sense a sharing in those events. The word translated fellowship is applied to a number of aspects of unity: to the common life of the primitive Christians in Jerusalem (Acts 2:42); to the collection for the saints (2 Corinthians 9:13); to the Eucharist (1 Corinthians 10:16}; to the sharing of the Christians in the Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 13:14; Philippians 2:1; to sharing in Christ s sufferings (Philippians 3:10; to union with the Father and the Son (1 John 1:3). But this wide and deep and many-sided unity is made possible only by a real contact with the historical events: Fellowship is essentially fellowship with the historical events. No book in the New Testament is more emphatic in its teaching about the fellowship and love of the brotherhood than the First Epistle of St John; and no book is more insistent that fellowship springs from and bears witness to the events of Jesus in the Flesh. The events created the Fellowship and the fellowship mysteriously shares in the events. Ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes became poor, that ye through his poverty might become rich. (2 Corinthians 8:9) The unity is between men who, dying to themselves, give glory to the one historic redemption and are drawn into it in one Body. The Eucharist is a sharing in the body and the blood of Christ, and the means whereby the Christians are one bread one body (1 Corinthians 10:16-17), only because it brings them very near to His actual death in the flesh (1 Corinthians 11:26) ## Forsyth, Lectures on the Church and Sacraments, p.40 That which we have seen and heard (i.e. the historical Incarnation) declare we unto you also, that ye also may have fellowship with us: yea, and our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. (1 John 1:3) Herein was the love of God manifested in us, that God hath sent his only begotten Son into the world (i.e., the historical event) that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. (1 John 4:9-10) This symbol of unity represents the unity of the Trinity, Father Son and Holy Spirit: the essential source of our
unity in Jesus Christ, the unity of all who believe in Jesus Christ as Saviour, Redeemer, and loving Pastor and Shepherd. But if you enter symbols of unity in an internet search, you will find that the idea of unity spreads to most faiths in a supreme being. Christian unity might be a clearer term for what we seek, as it is that unity of all Christian believers all those who confess Jesus Christ as Saviour, who repent of sin - who will be called to judgment on the second coming of Our Lord. So we look for unity of all professed Christians, and not of unity of all mankind: for to do that would be to acknowledge that these other faiths and other deities are acceptable to God Our Father in Heaven: when we read in Holy Scripture the Ten Commandments, or the introduction to our recitation of them in the Book of Common Prayer, as the Minister is called to say: Hear the law of God which was given unto Israel in old time. God spake these words and said: I am the Lord thy God; Thou shalt have no other gods but me. Pentecost, the Holy Paraclete descending. News from Fr. David Most of us are now well aware of the motto that has been selected for the Traditional Anglican Church of Canada: Euntes in mundum universum, translated as: Go ye into all the world : this is the message that was delivered to the apostles and disciples gathered together for food, as St. Mark writes, and to which report St. Matthew and St. Luke write that after eating, they go outdoors: And He led them out as far as to Bethany : to which St. John adds that they met Jesus after being out fishing, only recognising Jesus when He had said to cast their nets again, and they caught so many fish as they approached the shore. But it is always amazing to me that after running away in fear at Calvary, these men and women gathered themselves together, and then had the incredible reward, first made known to Mary Magdalene, of the Resurrection of their Lord, Jesus Christ from the dead. Often we wonder about the action of the Holy Spirit: is it for real?? we ask ourselves as yet another prayer seems to go unheard. But when we consider the strength that these men and women were
able to display in their words and by their actions after they had this transfiguring experience: we talk in our days of the need for empowerment of those who are in need so that they can make the necessary changes in their lives and get their future on track for a secure and happy life: but what happened in one place in Jerusalem was a true demonstration of that immense power that can be given to all of us who embrace their confession of faith. David+ And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. [2] And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. [3] And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. [4] And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2.1-4) Jesus says: Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence Fields to of yonder mustard place; on the Prairies and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. (Matt.17.20) Field of Prairie mustard St. Bride s Mission Mass Followed by lunch and study of The Imitation of Christ On Thursdays at am At the LPA office, Room 3A In rear of th Street, Burnaby. All welcome. Call for directions etc. A note from Lane Corley: Do whatever you have to do to keep this person away from your church! He will do more to keep your church inward focused and ineffective than almost anything. Because of this person, needs are going unmet in our community today. He has provided excuses, caused conflicts, and often raises unfounded questions and criticisms. He will also keep other people in church from serving God, using their spiritual gifts, from worshiping through giving, and growing in their walk with Christ. He or she may even cost your church more money as you have to hire more staff to fix what this person has done to the hearts and minds of people in the congregation. Let me give you this person s name: SOMEBODY ELSE. As a ministry leader, I heard often about the exploits of SOMEBODY ELSE, but it was always
false and there efforts always resulted in less ministry being accomplished. I thought SOMEBODY ELSE would do it. Why didn t SOMEBODY ELSE think of that. I can t, but certainly SOMEBODY ELSE will be able to be there. We don t have to go, SOMEBODY ELSE can do my part. Pastor, do yourself a favor, at the next Business Meeting, lead your people to vote SOMEBODY ELSE out of the church! And remind the church regularly that SOMEBODY ELSE is gone FOREVER. So, SOMEBODY ELSE = NOBODY = less of what God wants to do through the body of Christ in your community. photo by: tm-tm I commend to you the recent edition of the Trinitarian for its excellent news about the work being undertaken by Bishop Damien Mead in the provision of foster care for disabled or in need of specialized medical attention, and now, much needed equipment and support for these children. A Quick Answer to Prayer. by The Reverend Father Richard Hunt, (Anglican Church of Canada retired.) March 29th, When I visited my wife, Ruth on Wednesday, I did so in the knowledge that she was not well and was informed by her Care Home on the phone that I should
just visit her in her room and hold her hand. She was in fact hardly aware of my presence. My prayer for her immediately shifted to her comfort and I prayed that if she was not able to regain her health, Father, in your Love and Mercy, please take her Home to be with you. Just minutes before midnight, she passed away peacefully with my daughter Gail present, Gail immediately phoned me and I hurriedly dressed and went back to Holyrood with her. She was so peaceful and lovely and after a visit with the lovely staff, we went back to my suite and to bed. So altered a life changing experience of greatly fulfilling love which began with our meeting for the first time on January fourth, 1943 in a Parish Hall in St. Stephen s Church Calgary. Neither of us has ever doubted in the least degree that God our Father who loves us all so deeply and without reserve, brought us together and has been our preserver, guide and programmer ever since that first moment. Nothing that we have done has ever merited the joys we have known so wondrously for all the years, except that we have walked with our Lord and tried to serve Him. We have never merited His love, nor can we. Nor can anyone else, for the only perfect person who ever lived, Jesus by His own willing death on the Cross HAS, FOR US ALL paid the price of salvation, by the mercies of God, for all the persons who have ever lived or will ever live on this planet. Another quick prayer is, Jesus, I choose to be your follower and Disciple, wherever you will lead me (Disciple means, Disciplined one). I have shared the Good News of Jesus love and salvation with many people since I came to believe in Him and have never known a new believer who showed any emotion except joy, gladness, relief, excitement, new understanding and desire to share their new found Lord with anyone who will listen. We have just celebrated today, called Good Friday the death of Jesus on the Cross to make it possible for all believers to be with Him, in the Kingdom of God, Father and creator of all that is, and with all those who respond to His everlasting Love. Thus I have virtually no doubt that my beloved Ruth is with the Lord and all who have believed in Him down the ages. We will know each other with joy and universal love when we meet again, with no regrets or pain or unrest. I reveal without qualification that I deeply regret that I have to this point apparently failed to persuade many people who are very dear to me the urgency of making personal commitments to the Lord Jesus, through whom alone we have access to the Kingdom of God for Eternity. Of this matter too, I have no reservations or doubts and Jesus IS the only way home. The noises and opinions of the world around us speak all too loudly for many moderns to allow them to hear the voice of the Lord God, to be taught the truths they so desperately need, to decide where they need to go to look after their future course to live forever with the Lord who cannot be mocked. He wants to love us back to Him with His everlasting love and He knows the Way, the Truth and the Love, is Jesus, the Living Lord. 7 As we are in the midst of a Provincial election here in BC Doris Lessing, author and Nobel Laureate, wrote in her book African Laughter, that she had seen this notice on a wall of a government office in Harare, Zimbabwe shortly after Mr. Robert Mugabe had taken power: The Boss drives his men, The Leader inspires them. The Boss depends on authority, The Leader depends on goodwill. The Boss evokes fear. The Leader radiates love. The Boss says I. The Leader says We. The Boss shows who is wrong. The Leader shows what is wrong. The Boss knows how it is done. The Leader knows how to do it. The Boss demands respect. The Leader commands respect. So be a leader, Not a boss. More from the Rt. Rev. R.C.Mortimer, sometime Bishop of Exeter & Regius Professor of Moral & Pastoral Theology, Oxford. (The Elements of Moral Theology pub.black, 1947) HERESY is a sin against the virtue of faith, since it consists in the denial of a divinely revealed truth. The Catholic faith is a body of truth revealed by God and taught by His Church. Refusal to believe any one article of that faith is the sin of heresy. But such refusal may spring from different roots and the heresy be accordingly either formal or material. It is formal when a man refuses to believe a truth propounded to him although he knows that it is taught by the Church as divinely revealed, and although he has no cogent reasons for holding that it is not so. Such a refusal is born of a stubborn intellectual pride that unwarrantably and excessively exalts private judgment against the authority of the official teaching of the Church, based on tradition and the witness of generations of saints and doctors. He continues: It is sinful to allow, and afortiori to invite, heretics to take a public part in the services of the Church. Such action involves or implies a condonation of the heretical errors, since the heretics are treated as though they were not heretics at all and are given exactly the same privileges and standing as members of the Church. The same considerations apply to the admission of heretics to Communion. Such action condones the heresy and tends to its perpetuation as a matter of no great moment. It is of no avail to plead that most heretics are men of good will and guilty of material heresy only, and that therefore it is right to treat them as Christian brothers. However personally blameless, they hold and they teach error; they lead others into error, to the great danger of their souls. Their exclusion from an active part in the Church's worship is not a condemnation of their morals but of their errors. And the Church's condemnation of those errors must be marked and consistent, lest others should fall into them, innocently believing that the Church approves of them. Nor is it possible to plead that the particular errors of some heretics are concerned with matters at the circumference of the Christian faith, and not with anything central and fundamental. The Christian faith is one and integrated. And within that integrated body of doctrine all is true or all is false. The Church only condemns as heresy that which denies a part of that integrated whole. What is denied outside that whole is not heresy, but a lawful, even if minority, opinion. If the Church has condemned an opinion as heretical, it means that she holds it to be a denial of a part of the essential integrated Christian doctrine. It is not possible for anyone, lay or clerical, to assert that the opinion in question is no such part, without himself falling into heresy, in however good faith. Nor can it be denied, in fact, that the heretical opinions which prevail to-day concern matters of vital importance to the Christian faith - the Deity of Christ, the nature of man's justification, the meaning and efficacy of the sacraments, the nature of the
Church, these are all cardinal to man's salvation in Christ. Actions, however wellintentioned, which by their very nature must tend to obscure the importance of doctrinal error and to cast doubt on the clarity and authority of the Church's teaching, actions which must seem to assert that contrary opinions are equally tenable and true, can only serve to perplex men's minds, induce a paralyzing relativism and perpetuate those very disputes, errors and divisions which all desire to see ended. Now, I was very pleased to read this material so clearly expressed, as I had been asked to assist in an Anglican Church of Canada Eucharist to which all were invited, even those of another faith by the priest: Bishop Mortimer makes it so very clear that by so doing, all who partake are not partaking of the Eucharist, but are partaking in a Heresy. So we must be aware and on guard against inadvertently participating in any activity which may jeopardize our salvation: and, I think it is quite clear: heresy will jeopardize our salvation! News from Africa This Whitsuntide, it is important that we thank all of those benefactors for this first (almost) half of the year 2013: the start of 2013 has born the scars of the economic slowdown in the western world, and so passing on the pain to those of the third world, who are only too familiar with it. And yet, the time may well come when it will be the peoples of the third world who might be supporting the west: if the tremendous productivity of the land in central Africa could be linked to an infrastructure allowing produce and minerals mined to be transported to market, and when the young of Africa come to the assistance of the old in the west? But the scars from the first part of the year will take time to be healed: and unfortunately have led to many projects to be placed on hold, until funding can be assured - a problem which returns to the Africa Appeal, and on a wider front, to the Missionary Society of St. Paul, doing such magnificent work, but with difficulty. And, if the problem returns to the Africa Appeal, there is nothing for it but to pray that you will find it in your hearts to spread the word as far as you can, and then, we pray, children will have the chance to go to school, mothers and infants will receive access to healthcare, clergy will have a place to live, and churches will be centres of community. In 2007, I was in Bukavu with Bishop (then Father) Steven Ayule- Milenge: he showed me some land, and gave me plans which he had drawn up for a new church. We were unable to provide the funds, even though we were able to fund some of the village parishes, but even then, inadequately. In 2013, Fr. Alphonse phones to say that it has been difficult to say Mass because the rain is too heavy and there is no shelter for the altar. The difficulties they face seem to serve to make them even more resolute, so that the work of building the church of God continues Euntes in Mundum Universum Go ye into all the world. Given the courage in adversity that our brothers and sisters in the faith show, I have no doubt that there will be that church in Bukavu, just as there will be churches with good roofs and beautiful worship in Yaoundé, and in all these vibrant parishes! David+ If you have any questions about what happens during divine worship, let us know with a short note to the editor (fergusonwest@shaw.ca ) and we will try and give you the answer in the next Emerald Echo.

Your support is important for this essential mission activity! THE GREAT CHRISTIAN VIRTUES Almighty and everlasting God, give unto us the increase of faith, hope and charity, and that we may obtain that which thou dost promise, make us to love that which thou dost command, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. These three great virtues, faith, hope and charity (or love), are the foundations of our Christian life. They were the gifts given by God to un in our Baptism, and they are increased by every prayer or good work done for the love of God. They are central to our life and actions. To be increased, they must be exercised. To increase our faith, we must not worry over difficulties but meet every trial with a firm act of belief on which we base our trust in Him when Underneath are the everlasting arms. Hope is the steadfast expectation of those things which will surely come to pass because God, whose promise cannot fail, has promised them. Our hope is based on our knowledge of His love, His promises, and His Power. We know He loves us, He has promised us the good things of His house; and he has the power to fulfil His promises Charity is the greatest of Christian virtues which we should exercise toward God and man. The test of love is loyalty, We are always loyal to those we really love. But are we really loyal to God in thought, word and deed? Are we loyal to the principles which guide and direct our Church? For His sake, are we gentle and kind to others, watching for, or better still, making opportunities to do at lease one little thing tht is good for them each day? For Jesus has said: Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. (St. Matthew 25:40). By Faith we are saved, by Hope we are raised, and by Charity brought home unto God. These virtues are symbolized by the linked cross, anchor and heart. The Cross of Christ, on which our Blessed Lord suffered for our redemption His one oblation of Himself, once offered, was a full, perfect and sufficient sacrifice, oblation and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world. It is our Faith in his atoning power, his death, resurrection and ascension, that links us to the anchor of Hope. Hope inspires us to labour with courage and endurance because of our sure and steadfast faith in the saving grace of Christ. And the heart of God pours out to us the increase of Charity, a pure love which endures all things and never fails. In our turn, we must show this love in service and sacrifice for others. These virtues relate us directly with God. They come to us as a gift from God in our Baptism, and they are exercised only in the grace and power of God. There is no possibility of standing still in the exerciser of faith, hope and love. If they do not develop, they perish. So we must, as the prayer says, pray for their increase more and more. In the final thought of this prayer, we ask that, in order to receive the joyous and loving relation with God which shall endure for eternity, He will make us to love His will and commands. So long as tht love holds fast, we cannot go wrong. Faith and trust in God will give us our anchor, our solid ground for Hope. These two virtues belong to life of the Church Militant and Expectant only. When we pass to our ultimate reward in the Church Triumphant, faith will be lost in sight, and hope will pass into the full and glorious realization of all those blessed things which have been promised, land which we now see through a glass darkly. It is love which will endure for eternity. Heaven is the perfect life of love, ever deepening. As in the end we gaze upon the Fact of God, Love in its heavenly fullness, we will enter more and more into the life and joy of Him who is essential Love. GAF
