3 Three key passages 1. 1 Corinthians 11:3 (NKJV) 3 But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

4 Three key passages 2. 1 Tim. 2:9-15 In verses 9-10, he speaks of the woman s dress o in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.

5 1 Tim. 2:9-15 o In verses 11-12, he speaks of her submission He says that she should be silent. The Greek word, hēsychia, translated silent in 1 Tim. 2:11 &12, does not mean complete silence or no talking. It is used elsewhere in Acts 22:2, 2 Thess.3:12 to mean: settled down, undisturbed, not unruly, A different Greek word (sigaō) means to be silent, to say nothing (Lk. 18:39, 1 Cor. 14:34). 6 1 Tim. 2:9-15 o So in the worship services she can sing (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16). o She can make the good confession (Rom. 10:10).

7 1 Tim. 2:9-15 o Is his saying that she should not teach under any circumstance? No! why?

8 1 Tim. 2:9-15 o No! Why? Because she is commanded to teach Older women are to teach the younger (Titus 2:3-5) She is to teach her children (Titus 2:4; 2 Tim. 3:15; 1:5) She is to give an answer to everyone that asks concerning her faith (1 Pet. 3:15) Even in singing, she teaches (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16)

9 1 Tim. 2:9-15 o What then is he teaching? He is teaching that she MUST not to teach in such a way that she takes authority over the man. Over the man must modify teach.

10 1 Tim. 2:9-15 o Why? In verses 13-14, he gives the reason why o For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.

12 Three key passages 3. In this passage Paul is teaching them the proper conduct in worship. Things are to be done decently and in order (1 Cor. 14:40). Apparently, the tongue speakers, prophets were all speaking at once with the women asking questions during the service.

13 Three key passages o He tells the tongue speakers, prophets and the women asking questions during the service to be quiet! o The Greek word, sigao means to say nothing, keep silent

15 1 Cor. 14:25-40 o Passage is not addressing women teaching children in a Bible class or even speaking up in class.

16 Some brethren are saying, Not so! women have every right to speak and lead in the assembly.

17 Their justification o They ask, Do you love Jesus? Where do you find Jesus condemning it? o Answer: Paul wrote For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ (Galatians 1:12, NKJV)

18 Justification o Others say, Just part of their culture not ours Some things are: clothing, holy kiss, etc.

19 Just part of THEIR culture o Not so in this case. In both key passages, he goes back to the beginning back beyond the first century!

20 Just part of THEIR culture? o 1 Timothy 2:13, For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.

21 Just part of THEIR culture? o 1 Corinthians 14:34 (NKJV) 34 Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says.

22 Conclusion o Summary Women are not permitted to preach, lead the assembly, but she can learn, teach outside the assembly, but even then she must not take authority away from the man.
