3 Young Life Australia: Connecting with young people in their world Our Mission To build confidence, values and resilience in Australia s young people through significant relationships with adults who model the love of Jesus Christ. Our Vision To be the most influential model for positively impacting Australian high school young people for Christ with the resultant transformation of the wider community. An Overview Our Internship (1 st Year) Program provides you with the opportunity to: Complete a Certificate IV in Christian Ministry and Theology (10433NAT*). Choose 3 from 5 electives in agreement with your supervisor that upon completion can qualify you for future specialisations, two of which make you eligible for School Chaplaincy as per Commonwealth Legislation. Complete Young Life Foundations of Ministry and Young Life Australia Internal Training. Work towards becoming a qualified Young Life Field Staff Worker. Young Life Australia Interns are enrolled with Australian College of Ministries; and Young Life supports you by being a network organization of ACOM. ACOM is a NVR Registered Training Organisation (#90965). Click here for more information on being an ACOM Vocational Education student. Our Student Staff (1 st Year) Program is aimed at those are currently completing a tertiary or VET qualification separate to and independent of their work with Young Life. It provides you with the opportunity to: Complete Young Life Foundations of Ministry and Young Life Australia Internal Training. Work towards becoming a qualified Young Life Field Staff Worker. Abide, is Young Life Australia s Residential Year of Training and Discipleship. It includes the Intern (1 st Year) / Student Staff (1 st Year) Training as a component of the overall program. 4 Internship (1 st Year) & Student Staff (1 st Year) Job Description Core business responsibilities 1. Leadership, Management, Planning & Finances Main Tasks Be an active participant in developing a ministry plan for a local club that includes events, training, camping, clubs and schools in partnership with the Area Manager / Field Staff. Develop your leadership skills in preparation to lead a team of volunteers in your 2 nd year. Manage donor care and seek new donors to support your budget and the area budget using TDS model. 2. Staff, volunteers & teams 3. Schools, Contact Work, Club & Campaigners (Small / Discipleship Groups) Organise training of volunteers in local area in conjunction with the Area Manager. Lead volunteers using the Bible as the key teaching tool. Attend staff meetings, volunteer leaders meetings & camps as required. Make regular contact with young people in the school and assist other volunteers to do so. Assist the Area Manager in communication with school officials. Attend club regularly and take on key areas of responsibility. Run a regular discipleship group with a core group of young people you are working with. 4. Camping 5. Church Assist your local area in recruiting and fundraising for young people to attend camp. Assist with recruiting Work Crew and Summer Staff roles for Summer Camp. Accept your role on Summer Camp as assigned by your local Area Manager. Attend local camping activities. Attend a local church regularly and be involved in combined church activities as appropriate. Communicate with your church about your involvement in Young Life and how they can support you. 4

Navigators Scripture Memory The Topical Memory System (TMS) 1 was developed by The Navigators as a simple, easy-to-use system to help believers memorize key verses that point to basic truths and important instruction. 5. Spirituality of Fundraising (Henri Nouwen) An article 2 that helps us think about the way we look after, minister to and approach our donors. 6. 8 Time Requirements, Costs & Reimbursements (Intern 1 st Year) Intern: 2 day (minimum time commitment) Costs: Expenses may change this is an estimation only. Camping / Local Activities Local Activities (at approx. $50 / term) $200 Summer Camp $500 Training Staff Retreat $300 Volunteer Leaders Retreat (Regional) $250 ACOM Course (Cert IV) $3,500 Resources Purchasing of required reading books $100 Miscellaneous Support Costs (including supervision & national support) $2,550 Total (Interns) $7,400 Each member of the Young Life Australia Staff is required to raise their own financial support. For many, this is a daunting process, however both local area and National support is provided to assist you to engage donors and to raise finances. Payment of $100 / week is given, when the financial support is raised. Financial support may also be raised to cover the costs listed above any donation given is tax deductible. Costs must be covered before wages are commenced being paid. It is recommended that if you are interested in doing an Internship or joining Student Staff with us, that you begin conversations with your local supervisor at least 6 months prior to commencing the year to enable you to begin to raise financial support for your year. Essentially, you are required to raise $12,600 over a 12 month time period to cover all costs and to be paid your weekly wage. If you would like to complete the intern year in a volunteer capacity, you are welcome to do so, however costs outlined above must be covered by you and / or your donors. 8

10 Assignments with Reflections Choose 4 from the following options to complete throughout the year as agreed upon with your supervisor. Each response is to be minimum 1 page. 1. Write a reflection about your previous youth ministry experience. 2. Write the gospel in 1 page using no Christianese vernacular as if you were speaking to young people who know very little about Jesus. 3. Visit a church of a different denomination for one of their church service and write about your experience, including your knowledge of what opportunities existed for youth ministry within that church community. 4. Write a reflection on what God s personal calling in a Christian s life means. 5. Visit a different youth ministry in town and write a reflection on your experience. 6. Write a reflection on your own adolescence. 7. Visit the local Young Life committee and reflect on that experience. 8. Write a reflection on what spiritual gifts are. 10
11 Journal Reading Highlights For each book you read, use the following as a guide to complete each week. Be prepared to show one entry from the week to your supervisor. Book Title: Date: 1. 12 Swedish Bible Study Method Book of Romans Guide Begin your time praying and asking God to reveal Himself to you through His word. Fill in the journal guide (below) each day, and be prepared to show one entry from the week to your supervisor. The following is a guide only to help you read Romans over a 10 week time period. What draws your attention? What questions do you have from the passage? Questions that you would like to ask of The Lord? Of Paul? Is there anything difficult to understand from the passage? Are there any questions that would be helpful to discuss further with your supervisor / mentor / minister / friends? What is a personal application you can take from the passage? What does it look like to implement the application? Write down the name of someone (a friend / family member / YL team member / YL kid ) that would benefit from hearing what you ve learnt from this passage. 12

This is an opportunity for you to receive feedback on how you are going, as well as to discuss any issues or difficulties you are facing with your supervisor.
