1 Greetings, Welcome to Youth Ministry here at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. On behalf of our Pastor Fr. Tim Ramaekers, it is my great honor to introduce to you what Corpus Christi Youth Ministry has to offer our young people. From the 6 th grade until the end of their senior year in high school, Youth Ministry at Corpus Christi offers spiritual and sacramental growth in a personal, relational, dynamic, and comprehensive experience. Our Middle School Ministry (grades 6th to 8th) offers young people 3 years of, engaging, fun, and real faith filled experiences through our Sunday Edge Nights. We will also offer an event at Knott's Berry Farm called Middle School Youth Day sponsored by the Diocese of Orange. We are also planning an amazing weekend retreat for our middle schoolers at a nearby camp. Our High School Youth Ministry offers four (4) years of relational ministry and faithbased experiences that are vital to the spiritual development of young people throughout their high school years. The two-year process to receive Confirmation is just one component of our Youth Ministry. Youth Ministry at Corpus Christi goes beyond what one may learn in a religion class and allows a young person to actually experience their faith and become true disciples of Christ. Through our Summit groups and our youth group meetings called Life Nights young people deepen their relationship with Christ. We also offer Bible Nights, one day Youth Events in Anaheim and Magic Mountain, LIFE TEEN retreats, weekend youth conferences such as Steubenville, summer activities, Youth Leadership opportunities service projects and more. Corpus Christi Youth Ministry is truly a unique experience. Our parish here at Corpus Christi is a purpose driven Catholic Church. Everything that Youth Ministry offers is intentional about the mission of Christ and His Church. Christ offers us the "best" and we want to offer the best to our young people as well. Please know that as your Youth Minister I will always strive to bring our young people closer to Christ here at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. I invite you to find out more about what we plan to offer our young people. If you would like to help our mission to love God, love others, grow, serve, and proclaim or if you have any questions please ccym949@gmail.com or call me at May God Bless you and Mary keep you. Your Servant in Christ, George Vasquez Youth Minister

The penalty is that the person may not participate in the full sacramental life of the Church. 11 Handbook for High School Youth Ministry and the Sacrament of Confirmation at Corpus Christi Catholic Church Parents Parents are truly the primary ministers of the Catholic faith to their children. They prepare the soil and plant the first seeds of faith. We commend parents and guardians and encourage them to take seriously their role of making their Catholic households a place where faith is passed on to the next generation. The Role of Parents Part Three of The Catechism of the Catholic Church (Life in Christ), can enlighten us regarding our responsibilities as parents. I invite you to read these sections, reflect upon them and ask God to help parents to be active catechists in their homes, the domestic church. "Parents must regard their children as children of God and respect them as human persons. Showing themselves obedient to the will of the Father in heaven, they educate their children to fulfill God s law. Parents have the first responsibility for the education of their children. They bear witness to this responsibility first by creating a home where tenderness, forgiveness, respect, fidelity, and disinterested service are the rule. The home is well suited for education in the virtues. This requires an apprenticeship in self-denial, sound judgment, and self-mastery the preconditions of all true freedom. Parents should teach their children to subordinate the material and instinctual dimensions to interior and spiritual ones. Parents have a grave responsibility to give good example to their children. By knowing how to acknowledge their own failings to their children, parents will be better able to guide and correct them: He who loves his son will not spare the rod. He who disciplines his son will profit by him. (Sir 30:1 2) Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. (Eph 6:4) The home is the natural environment for initiating a human being into solidarity and communal responsibilities. Parents should teach children to avoid the compromising and degrading influences which threaten human societies. Through the grace of the sacrament of marriage, parents receive the responsibility and privilege of evangelizing their children. Parents should initiate their children at an early age into the mysteries of the faith of which they are the first heralds for their children. They should associate them from their tenderest years with the life of the Church. A wholesome family life can foster interior dispositions that are a genuine preparation for a living faith and remain a support for it throughout one s life. Education in the faith by the parents should begin in the child s earliest years. This already happens when family members help one another to grow in faith by the witness of a Christian life in keeping with the Gospel. Family catechesis precedes, accompanies, and enriches other forms of instruction in the faith. Parents have the mission of teaching their children to pray and to discover their vocation as children of God. The parish is the Eucharistic community and the heart of the liturgical life of Christian families; it is a privileged place for the catechesis of children and parents. Children in turn contribute to the growth in holiness of their parents. Each and everyone should be generous and tireless in forgiving one another for offenses, quarrels, injustices, and neglect. Mutual affection suggests this. The charity of Christ demands it. Parents respect and affection are expressed by the care and attention they devote to bringing up their young children and providing for their physical and spiritual needs. As the children grow up, the same respect and devotion lead parents to educate them in the right use of their reason and freedom." 1

12 Corpus Christi Catholic Church, specifically through our Pastor, Youth Minister, Catechists, Core members, and ministry leaders, intend to support parents in forming their teenagers to be true disciples of Jesus Christ. Parents are asked to support the Confirmation process through the enhancement parent's own formation. Parents are also asked to actively support the Confirmation ministry through their prayers, gifts, and talents. We ask that Parents attend CLASS 101 and CLASS 201 as soon as possible. They are held on the 2nd Sunday of every month from 1pm-5pm (includes lunch) Classes are FREE. These two classes will prepare you for what it means to a member of our Church family here at Corpus Christi and how you can further grow spiritually so you can share your faith with you son/daughter to be disciples of Christ. To help support our ministry we ask that you attend the Parent Orientation and help with 3 of our Saturday Life Night Dinners. Additional information and dates will be given at orientation. I. Attendance: Outline and Guidelines of the Youth Ministry and the Confirmation Process: We ask everyone in Youth Ministry to commit to coming to their Summit small groups at least twice a month. This will be the most impactful part of their faith experience here at Corpus Christi Youth Ministry. The regular Confirmation sessions only meets two (2) times a month or less! So, if they are absent they miss a lot! There may be good reasons why one needs to be absent (such as illness, death in the family, etc.) but even excused absences result in the young person missing out on a significant part of the Confirmation formation process. Whether an absence is excused or unexcused if the young person is absent an excessive amount of times, then the he/she misses out on a major part of the Confirmation year and the Confirmation process. Those with an excessive amount of absences may not be properly prepared to receive the Sacrament and thus must meet with the Youth Minister to discuss. Confirmation sessions begin promptly at 3pm (please arrive no later than 2:55pm) and may begin with an activity that those who come late may not be able to participate in. Anyone who is tardy for meetings may miss out on a lot more than it seems. Being on time to the Confirmation sessions is an important part of the Confirmation process. Excessive tardiness may result in the young person missing out on important parts of their Confirmation sessions and their Confirmation formation process and must be discussed with the Youth Minister. II. Ministry: Each month, we ask that everyone in High School Youth Ministry attend two Summit Group meetings. Each young person should remember to sign-in at each meeting. This is an essential part of Youth Ministry and the Confirmation process where they come to understand that they can grow in relationship with Christ and each other. This ministry is focused on forming young people to become true disciples of Christ. This ministry is modeled after Christ and how he discipled his own Apostles. A small group (about 6 other teens) will be facilitated by a leader on a regularly scheduled day at least 2 times a month. Ongoing High school Youth Ministry meetings at Corpus Christi include: Life Nights on their scheduled Saturdays after 5pm Mass, and the Bible Nights on Life Nights by LIFE TEEN is our main youth group experience with awesome nights on teen s Catholic faith, hot issues for teens, and fun social gatherings. These meeting are free and open to all high-school aged youth, so friends are welcomed. Bible Nights Simply put: We get to know Jesus by reading the Bible!!! This night is for teens to read together the Bible readings we hear at Mass and more. Bring your own Bible or borrow one of ours. This is a great way to learn how and begin to read the Bible. 2

13 Other High School Youth Ministry meetings also include any special event meetings or outings such as XLT, Beach days, Ball Games, Concerts, (special event meetings or outings are subject to additional registration and fees). Youth Ministry Core Team members may also reach out to youth via phone calls, , text, or other social media primarily for relational ministry purposes as well as to remind them of upcoming events and opportunities. Please be sure to accommodate for this outreach as it is a valuable part of relational ministry. III. IV. Service Projects: Everyone should complete at least two group Service Projects in each year. Group Service projects may consist of their Summit small group and a leader or a large group of serving towards one goal. These Group Service Projects will be presented throughout the process and our youth will be asked to participate in them. Service projects are meant to be formal volunteer parish/community service. Please consider joining the Youth Leadership here at Corpus Christi as a service project opportunity as well as to develop Catholic leadership skills. Participation: Participation is a key component in Youth Ministry since most of the meetings are discussion based and small group activities. Everyone should fully participate in their Summit, Confirmation, Life Night, Bible Night etc. in order to get the most out of their Youth Ministry experience. V. Interview: Each young person seeking Confirmation is asked to participate in a scheduled interview with the Youth Minister and or our Pastor. One interview will be scheduled after their first year in Youth Ministry and another just before their Confirmation. These interviews are critical in determining the readiness of one receiving the Holy Sacrament of Confirmation. VI. VI. VII. Letter to the Bishop: For those to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation our Bishop asks for a personal letter. (We will provide prompt guides and due dates at the appropriate time of year) Mass Requirements: Everyone should fulfill their Sunday obligation by going to Mass every Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation. We encourage you to go as a family. We have conveniently placed Confirmation sessions and Life Nights around the 5pm Saturday Mass. Retreat / Youth Events: We will have an annual weekend Retreat - Jan , 2019 We ask those receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation attend preferably in their second year of Youth Ministry. You are encouraged to attend one of two youth events as part of their first year Youth Ministry/Confirmation process but these are optional. If you are interested in going to one of these events, then you must sign up at the designated time in order to secure ticket, registration, and transportation. Inspiration at Magic Mountain on Saturday November 3, 2019 Youth Day at the Anaheim Convention Center on Thurs. March 21, 2019 Corpus Christi Youth Ministry Expectations and Outcomes 1. Everyone in Youth ministry is expected to attend and grow in their Summit small groups and meet at least 2 times a month or more depending on the group. 2. Those in Youth Ministry seeking the Sacrament of Confirmation are prepared and formed for the Sacrament via the scheduled Saturday Confirmation session. If a Confirmation session is missed one should consider attending Life Nights or Bible Nights to supplement their formation. The readiness to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation will not be determined by the amount of sessions attended but will be determined by their personal formation and preparedness which will be assessed in the interviews or in discussion with the Youth Minister and/or Pastor. 3

14 3. Those who are enrolled in extracurricular activities are responsible for not allowing them to conflict with Youth Ministry and their commitment to growing in faith as a disciple of Christ. This may include tardiness and or absences. 4. Everyone must sign in at meetings and events and is expected to be present until the end. If a minor is wishing or needing to leave early we must have permission from the parent (signed note, etc.); and/or the parent must come in to sign them out. The parent must include the time in which they signed their child out. 5. Everyone must adhere to the expectations outlined in the Diocese of Orange Behavior Contract. 6. Everyone should attend all Sunday Masses and Holy Days of Obligation. Again, you are encouraged to take advantage of the Saturday 5:00p.m. Mass which is after scheduled Confirmation sessions and before Life Nights. 7. We asked you to perform a minimum of 2 group Service Projects each year for our church or community. 8. We ask those seeking the Sacrament of Confirmation to choose a Sponsor right away. Choosing A Sponsor Sponsors are a vital part of the Confirmation process. Sponsors should be chosen early in the Confirmation process in order to guide the candidates (those seeking Confirmation) through their spiritual journey. Candidates should consider the following factors when choosing their Sponsor for Confirmation. Your parents and Youth Ministry Leaders are good sources for feedback on this important decision. As you discuss, consider the importance of the role of the sponsor. The Role of Sponsors A sponsor can make an enormous difference in the preparation of a candidate for the Sacrament of Confirmation. It is therefore, important that you choose a sponsor who is well suited to the role and who will be integral to the preparation process. The Church s tradition of involving a sponsor in the preparation of candidates for the Sacraments of Christian Initiation is one of our most ancient approaches to faith formation. In the early centuries, when the catechumen was the entry point for anyone seeking to become a Christian, the sponsor played an vital role. The sponsor was a living witness and mentor who represented the Christian community (its values, beliefs, behaviors, and so on) to the catechumen. The sponsor would, in turn, witness to the community on behalf of the catechumen s readiness for the initiatory sacraments. The role of a sponsor was not over with the celebration of the sacraments. It was seen as a lifetime commitment, a relationship that would last throughout the individual s journey of faith. In the early Church the three Sacraments of Christian Initiation were always celebrated at one time; therefore, there was never a different sponsor at Baptism and Confirmation. In subsequent centuries, however, with the separation of Confirmation from Baptism, it became more common to have different persons act as sponsor for those two sacraments. Both the Code of Canon Law (Canon 893.2) and the introduction to the Rite of Confirmation (5) suggest that in view of contemporary pastoral circumstances, it is desirable to have one s baptismal sponsor act as sponsor at Confirmation. While this remains the ideal, it seems much more important that the sponsor chosen be available and involved with the candidate in a significant way and be able to offer an authentic example of lived Christian faith. As a bare minimum, the Code of Canon Law specifies that the requirements for acting as a sponsor at Confirmation (Canon 893) are the same as those for godparents at Baptism (Canon 874). Briefly, that canon directs that the person must have completed their sixteenth year of age, be fully initiated in the Sacraments, live a life of faith, not be the parent, and not be bound by any other canonical restrictions. One of the challenges that might exist occurs when sponsors live at a distance and cannot interact in person with their candidate. However, in this day of instantaneous Internet and cell phone communication, only a little extra effort is required to maintain regular contact between sponsor and candidate. It is important that interaction occurs on a consistent basis and that sponsors are informed about meetings or information they may have missed because of their distance. If the Sponsor cannot be present at any required functions, the candidate must find a stand-in or proxy for your Sponsor. Our Confirmation preparation agrees strongly with the important observation made in the General Directory for Catechesis that growth in faith results from one s involvement in an entire network of relationships within the believing community. (See GDC 141, 158, 254, 257.) Given this perspective, it is clear why the role of sponsor in the formation process is so important. 4
