1 Lent /Easter 2018 Dear Friends, Welcome to this Lent/Easter season edition of the Lectionary Based Small Christian Community resource book which will guide us through the classic journey of The Paschal Mystery - Christ's suffering, death and Resurrection. This year we are using the word HOPE as a backdrop for our Lenten and Easter seasons; specifically, a call for us all to be an instrument of Hope in the midst of violence in our world. We are asking you to be particularly attentive to the words that will be featured each week of Lent during Mass. These words will highlight our need to hold out Hope in the midst of Despair, Doubt, Anger, Judgment and Fear. It is my hope that your reflection on the Lenten and Easter scriptures will give you a deeper appreciation for the challenges in our lives that often lead to violence and, more importantly, a deeper appreciation for the instruments of Peace that we are all called to be Peace that reflects our hope of a less violent world, Peace that leads to new life in Christ. Anti-violence is our intent this Lent with support of two programs "Strong Futures" on the south side of Chicago and "The Peace Corner" on the west side and Peaceful Pathways is our approach. 4 1 st Sunday of Lent February 18, 2018 FIRST READING Genesis A reading from the book of Genesis. God said to Noah and to his sons with him, "As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth." God said, This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh." SECOND READING 1 Peter A reading from the first letter of Peter. Christ suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison. In former times these did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons were saved through water. Baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him. 5 1 st Sunday of Lent February 18, 2018 GOSPEL Mark A reading from the holy gospel according to Mark. After Jesus was baptized, the Spirit drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him. Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news. FAITH SHARING QUESTIONS 1. In Genesis, God s covenant promises that: the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. Why might God have promised to never have another flood? What would this have meant to Noah and his descendants? 2. God uses the rainbow as a reminder of His covenant with us. Have you experienced a sign(s) that revealed God s covenant with you? 3. Peter tells us that Noah s flood prefigured baptism. How does our own baptism link us to Noah and the righteous survivors of the flood? 4. If you have had a desert experience, who were the angels that ministered to you? 5. Our Lenten theme centers on the word Hope. How can we use this sacred time of Lent to center on Hope as we move to the joy of Easter morning? What changes can you make in attitude and action that will last beyond Easter? SOCIAL JUSTICE QUESTION Jesus was called to the desert with no place to hide from the temptations of Satan. Particularly on the south and west sides of Chicago, vulnerable youth and young adults are tempted to join gangs, sell drugs and take other risks due to the "deserts" where they live with little or no job opportunities. 6 2 nd Sunday of Lent February 25, 2018 FIRST READING Genesis , 9-13, A reading from the book of Genesis. God tested Abraham. God said to him, Abraham! And Abraham said, Here I am. God said, Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that I shall show you. When Abraham and Isaac came to the place that God had shown him, Abraham built an altar there and laid the wood in order. He bound his son Isaac, and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to kill his son. But the angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven, and said. Abraham, Abraham! And he replied, Here I am. The angel said, Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me. Abraham looked up and saw a ram, caught in a thicket by its horns. Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. The angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven, and said, By myself I have sworn, says the Lord: Because you have done this, and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will indeed bless you, and I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of their enemies, and by your offspring shall all the nations of the earth gain blessing for themselves, because you have obeyed my voice. SECOND READING Romans 8.31b-35, 37++ A reading from the letter of Paul to the Romans. If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us everything else? Who will bring any charge against God s elect? Is it God who justifies? Who is to condemn? Is it Christ Jesus, who died, and indeed, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who intercedes for us? Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 7 2 nd Sunday of Lent February 25, 2018 GOSPEL Mark A reading from the holy gospel according to Mark. Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." Peter did not know what to say, for they were terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, "This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!" Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them anymore, but only Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead could mean. FAITH SHARING QUESTIONS 1. Like Abraham, in what ways have you been tested by God? How has this made your faith stronger? 2. When has God s plan surprised you, because it was better than the plan you had for yourself? 3. As Paul wrote, in life we all go through difficulties. How can we keep God s love foremost in our lives to better handle tough times? 4. In this Gospel reading, as in others, it is Peter, James and John who are Jesus inner circle. Who s in your inner circle, and what trusted role do they play in your life? Simply put, who are your Peter, James and John? 5. In our Gospel, the voice of God says: This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him! What can you do during this holy period of Lent to listen to Jesus more? SOCIAL JUSTICE QUESTION Young people gather at the Peace Corner Youth Center (PCYC) in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago after school to escape the violence and other dangerous activities. There is much doubt and concern about the future of these children; however, with the PCYC, lives are being transformed. What transformation is Jesus calling you to this Lent? 8 3 rd Sunday of Lent March 4, 2018 FIRST READING Exodus A reading from the book of Exodus. God spoke all these words: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and fourth generation of those who reject me, but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments. You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name. Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it. Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 1.18, A reading from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians. The message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 9 3 rd Sunday of Lent March 4, 2018 GOSPEL John A reading from the holy gospel according to John. The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father's house a marketplace!" His disciples remembered that it was written, Zeal for your house will consume me. The people then said to him, "What sign can you show us for doing this?" Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." Then they said, "This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?" But Jesus was speaking of the temple of his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken. When he was in Jerusalem during the Passover festival, many believed in his name because they saw the signs that he was doing. But Jesus on his part would not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people and needed no one to testify about anyone; for he himself knew what was in everyone. FAITH SHARING QUESTIONS 1. For those of us old enough to remember, Sunday used to be a very quiet day. Over time, how have the money-changers altered our Sabbath? What can we do in 2018 to recapture the quiet reflection of Sundays past? 2. The 10 commandments are divine law, leaving no room for ambiguity. How do we reconcile this with God s mercy and the truth and grace of Jesus Christ? 3. Like the Jews and the Greeks in our second reading, why is it that we look for signs and wisdom rather than relying on faith? 4. During his clash in the temple, why do you think that Jesus showed anger and his human side instead of his divine side in dealing with the money-changers? What was He demonstrating to those who witnessed this confrontation? 5. Our Gospel concludes with: Jesus on his part would not entrust himself to them for he himself knew what was in everyone. What opportunity does Lent offer us to look at and improve what is inside of us? SOCIAL JUSTICE QUESTION On the south side of Chicago, Strong Futures is a program that is overturning stereotypes and doubt regarding the rehabilitation of troubled youth and gang members. The anger and hopelessness that consumes them is slowly transformed to tranquility and confidence, leading them to a brighter future. Is a stereotype or bias cluttering your judgment of others? 10 4 th Sunday of Lent March 11, 2018 FIRST READING 2 Chronicles a, A reading from the second book of Chronicles. All the leading priests and the people were exceedingly unfaithful, following all the abominations of the nations; and they polluted the house of the Lord that he had consecrated in Jerusalem. The Lord, the God of their ancestors, persistently sent his messengers to them, because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place; but they kept mocking the messengers of God, despising his words, and scoffing at his prophets, until the wrath of the Lord against his people became so great that there was no remedy. Therefore the Lord brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans, who burned the house of God, broke down the wall of Jerusalem, burned all its palaces with fire, and destroyed all its precious vessels. The king took into exile in Babylon those who had escaped from the sword, and they became servants to him and to his sons until the establishment of the kingdom of Persia, to fulfill the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had made up for its sabbaths. All the days that it lay desolate it kept sabbath, to fulfill seventy years. Thus says King Cyrus of Persia: The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he has charged me to build him a house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever is among you of all his people, may the Lord his God be with him! Let him go up. SECOND READING Ephesians A reading from the letter of Paul to the Ephesians. God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ for it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come God might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God. This is not the result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life. 11 4 th Sunday of Lent March 11, 2018 GOSPEL John A reading from the holy gospel according to John. Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but might have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed. But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God. FAITH SHARING QUESTIONS 1. Chronicles is a summary of the history that was repeated over and over: People sin God is merciful people continue to sin divine punishment follows. In the end, God shows the depth of His mercy and forgiveness. Is this pattern still true today? How does God s mercy continue to impact our lives? 2. King Cyrus is a surprising figure in Chronicles. It is often the person or situation that we least expect that reveals God s mercy to us. Can you share an example of this from your own life? 3. As Paul tells us: For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing. In light of this, what is the necessity of doing good works? 4. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. This may be the most widely known Gospel quote. What does it mean to you? 5. During this time of Lent, what can we do to make the light brighter in our lives and for those around us? SOCIAL JUSTICE QUESTION Christ brings light to the world. 12 5 th Sunday of Lent March 18, 2018 FIRST READING Jeremiah A reading from the book of the prophet Jeremiah. The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, Know the Lord, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. SECOND READING Hebrews A reading from the letter to the Hebrews. In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him. 13 5 th Sunday of Lent March 18, 2018 GOSPEL John A reading from the holy gospel according to John. Among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor. Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say Father, save me from this hour? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him." Jesus answered, "This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself." Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die. FAITH SHARING QUESTIONS 1. In what ways has your covenant with the Lord changed or evolved over the years? 2. The second reading tells us that Jesus learned obedience from what He suffered. How has hardship or suffering changed your relationship with God? 3. In our Gospel, Jesus says: Whoever serves me, the Father will honor. What challenge does this present for us moving forward? 4. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. Who is the ruler who will be driven out, and what does this mean for God s people? 5. Next Sunday is Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion. During Lent, what transformations have taken place in your faith life? Do you feel more prepared this year for the holiest days that lie ahead? SOCIAL JUSTICE QUESTION When a grain dies, it produces much fruit. Holy Family's Peaceful Pathways Lenten Project is supporting two programs, Strong Futures and Peace Corner Youth Center. 14 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord March 25, 2018 FIRST READING Isaiah A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah. The Lord God has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. The Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame. SECOND READING Philippians A reading from the letter of Paul to the Philippians. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Note: As a group read the Passion in parts taking time to reflect on each scene in the narrative. PALM SUNDAY THE PASSION Mark The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. It was two days before the Passover and the festival of Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him; for they said, "Not during the festival, or there may be a riot among the people. While Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at the table, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment of nard, and she broke open the jar and poured the ointment on his head. But some were there who said to one another in anger, Why was the ointment wasted in this way? For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor. And they scolded her. But Jesus said, Let her alone; why do you trouble her? She has performed a good service for me. For you always have the poor with you, and you can show kindness to them whenever you wish; but you will not always have me. 15 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord March 25, 2018 She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for its burial. Truly I tell you, wherever the good news is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in remembrance of her. Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them. When they heard it, they were greatly pleased, and promised to give him money. So he began to look for an opportunity to betray him. On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, the disciples said to Jesus, "Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?" So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him, and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks, "Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?"' He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there." So the disciples set out and went to the city, and found everything as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal. When it was evening, Jesus came with the twelve. And when they had taken their places and were eating, Jesus said, Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me." They began to be distressed and to say to him one after another, "Surely, not I?" He said to them, It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the bowl with me. For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that one not to have been born. While they were eating, he took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to them, and said, "Take; this is my body." Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, and all of them drank from it. He said to them, "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. Truly I tell you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God." When they had sung the hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. And Jesus said to them, You will all become deserters; for it is written, I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered. But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee." Peter said to him, Even though all become deserters, I will not. Jesus said to him. Truly I tell you, this day, this very night, before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times." But he said vehemently, Even though I must die with you, I will not deny you." And all of them said the same. They went to a place called Gethsemane; and Jesus said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray." He took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be distressed and agitated. Then Jesus said to them, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as though I were a bandit? Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not arrest me. But let the scriptures be fulfilled." All of them deserted him and fled. A certain young man was following Jesus, wearing nothing but a linen cloth. They caught hold of him, but he left the linen cloth and ran off naked. They took Jesus to the high priest; and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes were assembled. Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the guards, warming himself at the fire. Now the chief priests and the whole council were looking for testimony against Jesus to put him to death; but they found none. For many gave false testimony against him, and their testimony did not agree. Some stood up and gave false testimony against him, saying. We heard him say, 'I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.' But even on this point their testimony did not agree. Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, Have you no answer? What is it that they testify against you? But he was silent and did not answer. Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?" Jesus said, I am; and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven. Some began to spit on him, to blindfold him, and to strike him, saying to him, "Prophesy!" The guards also took him over and beat him. While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. When she saw Peter warming himself, she stared at him and said, "You also were with Jesus, the man from Nazareth. But he denied it, saying, I do not know or understand what you are talking about." And he went out into the forecourt. Then the cock crowed. And the servant girl, on seeing him, began again to say to the bystanders, This man is one of them. But again he denied it. Then after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, Certainly you are one of them; for you are a Galilean. But he began to curse, and he swore an oath, I do not know this man you are talking about." At that moment the cock crowed for a second time. Then Peter remembered that Jesus had said to him, Before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times." And he broke down and wept. As soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate. Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" He answered him, "You say so." Then the chief priests accused him of many things. Pilate asked him again, "Have you no answer? See how many charges they bring against you?" But Jesus made no further reply, so that Pilate was amazed. Now at the festival he used to release a prisoner for them, anyone for whom they asked. Now a man called Barabbas was in prison with the rebels who had committed murder during the insurrection. So the crowd came and began to ask Pilate to do for them according to his custom. Then he answered them, "Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?" For he realized that it was out of jealousy that the chief priests had handed him over. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead. Pilate spoke to them again, "Then what do you wish me to do with the man you call the King of the Jews?" They shouted back, "Crucify him!" Pilate asked them, Why? What evil has he done? But they shouted all the more, Crucify him! So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them; and after flogging Jesus, he handed him over to be crucified. Then the soldiers led him into the courtyard of the palace (that is, the governor s headquarters); and they called together the whole cohort. And they clothed him in a purple cloak; and after twisting some thorns into a crown, they put it on him. And they began saluting him, Hail, King of the Jews! They struck his head with a reed, spat upon him, and knelt down in homage to him. After mocking him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh; but he did not take it. And they crucified him, and divided his clothes among them. casting lots to decide what each should take. It was nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified him. The inscription of the charge against him read, The King of the Jews. And with him they crucified two bandits, one on his right and one on his left. Those who passed by derided him, shaking their heads and saying, Aha! You would destroy the temple and build it in three days; save yourself, and come down from the cross! In the same way the chief priests, along with the scribes, were also mocking him among themselves and saying, He saved others; he cannot save himself. Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down from the cross now, so that we may see and believe. Those who were crucified with him also taunted him. When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. At three o'clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" which means "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. There was not a needy person among them, for as many as owned land or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold. They laid it at the apostles feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. SECOND READING 1 John A reading from the first letter of Saint John Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. While in their joy they were disbelieving and still wondering, he said to them, "Have you anything here to eat?" They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate it in their presence. Has there been a particular homily or testimony that made a difference in your faith life? 2. Peter tells the people he knows that they acted out of ignorance in order to fulfill the words of the prophets, but still need to repent. Why do we need to repent even when we have acted in ignorance? 3. John tells us in our second reading that Christ is our Advocate with the Father. As we know from the Gospels, the Holy Spirit is also an Advocate. Who do you pray to for forgiveness and why? 4. Why was it important for Jesus to eat a piece of fish in the presence of everyone? 5. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders; it has become the cornerstone. In our first reading, Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit as he preached to the leaders and elders. When have you felt the presence of the Holy Spirit? How did His presence strengthen you? 2. Our first reading also speaks to healing through the name of Jesus Christ. Have you witnessed this kind of healing in your own life, or that of another? 4. In our Gospel, Jesus says: I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. Who is Jesus referring to? How can we help? 5. The one who saves us is a humble shepherd. How does that contrast with the type of leader that our society looks for today? Why don t we seek out humble leaders? When Saul had come to Jerusalem, he attempted to join the disciples; and they were all afraid of him, for they did not believe that he was a disciple. But Barnabas took him, brought him to the apostles, and described for them how on the road he had seen the Lord, who had spoken to him, and how in Damascus Saul had spoken boldly in the name of Jesus. So Saul went in and out among them in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord. He spoke and argued with the Hellenists; but they were attempting to kill him. When the believers learned of it, they brought Saul down to Caesarea and sent him off to Tarsus. Meanwhile the church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and was built up. Living in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers. Second Reading 1 John A reading from the first letter of John. Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples." 30 6 th Sunday of Easter May 6, 2018 First Reading Acts , 34-35, A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. On Peter s arrival at Caesarea, Cornelius, a centurion of the Roman cohort, met him, and falling at his feet, worshipped him. But Peter made him get up, saying, Stand up; I am only a mortal. Then Peter began to speak to those assembled in the house of Cornelius, I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him." While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Second Reading 1 John A reading from the first letter of John. Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. God s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Then Peter said, "Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?" So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. 31 6 th Sunday of Easter May 6, 2018 Gospel John A reading from the holy gospel according to John. Jesus said to his disciples: "As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father s commandments and abide in his love. "I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. FAITH SHARING QUESTIONS 1. In our reading, Peter tells the centurion: Stand up; I am only a mortal. In today s society, there s an abundance of hero worship. What has contributed to this? And what does Peter s statement say to you? 2. As a Jew, Peter usually did not enter a Gentile s house. In terms of your faith journey, what is something that you are now more open to, that you weren t in the past? 3. In our second reading, what do you think John meant when he said: In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins? 4. In our Gospel, Jesus says: If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love. So, what happens when we don t keep his commandments? 5. Do you consider yourself Jesus servant or friend, and why? 32 The Ascension of the Lord May 13, 2018 First Reading Acts A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. In the first book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus did and taught from the beginning until the day when he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. This, he said, is what you have heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?" He replied, It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven. Second Reading Ephesians 4:1-13 A reading from the letter of Paul to the Ephesians. Brothers and sisters: I, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it is said, When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive; he gave gifts to his people. When it says, He ascended, what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things. The gifts he gave were that some would be Apostles, some Prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. Jesus appeared to the eleven, and he said to them, "Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation. The one who believes and is baptized will be saved; but the one who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: by using my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes in their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover." So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went out and proclaimed the good news everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that accompanied it. FAITH SHARING QUESTIONS 1. In our first reading, we are told: After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs. The apostles had the benefit of seeing these proofs. For us today, what proofs have we witnessed that strengthens us? 2. Since we don t know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority, is this better than knowing? When you think about it, where do your thoughts lead you? 3. In our second reading, Paul tells us that the gifts He gave to many were meant to build up the body of Christ. In the same way, how are we in our SCC a gift that continues to do the same? What is our calling? 4. In our Gospel, Jesus commissioned the eleven to: Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation. He then gave them additional final instructions. The work of the Apostles enabled our faith to grow for 2,000 years. What is our responsibility to continue this commission? 5. The Gospel speaks of the many signs that will accompany those who believe. Many of our SCC groups discuss God Sightings. Do you view these as additional signs? Do you have a significant God Sighting that you can share? SOCIAL JUSTICE QUESTION As disciples of Jesus, we are called to proclaim the good news. 34 Pentecost May 20, 2018 First Reading Acts A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in their own language. Second Reading 1 Corinthians 12.3b-7, A reading from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians. Brothers and sisters: No one can say "Jesus is Lord" except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body Jews or Greeks, slaves or free and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and converts, Cretans and Arabsin our own languages we hear them speaking about God s deeds of power. 35 Pentecost May 20, 2018 Gospel John A reading from the holy gospel according to John. It was evening on the day Jesus rose from the dead, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained. FAITH SHARING QUESTIONS 1. The presence of the Holy Spirit transformed the lives of the Apostles forever, and gave birth to the Church. How can we open ourselves to the transformative presence of the Holy Spirit in 2018? 2. How does Pentecost bring the Easter season to a joyous conclusion? What significance does Pentecost have in our lives today? 3. In the second reading, Paul stresses that the Church must be diverse: For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body Jews or Greeks, slaves or free and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. Have we become more or less open to diversity in our church, community and country? Are we hopeful for the future? 4. Jesus repeatedly offered the gift of forgiveness, which was passed on to the Apostles. Why is forgiveness so important yet so elusive? How can we do a better job of forgiving in the coming year? 5. Now that the season of Lent and Easter has concluded, as you reflect back, are there positive changes in your thoughts or actions that you will carry forward? SOCIAL JUSTICE QUESTION On Pentecost, we reflect on receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit. In that gift is the power to intentionally forgive or retain the sins of another.
