Most of the me they don t realize they are domina ng. Sit next to them touch on the shoulder. Limit eye contact when you ask ques ons. Encourage others by asking for their comments. 2. Non-talkers Keep the group non-threatening. If necessary, remind everyone of the group covenant. Encourage them, but do not force them to talk. Compliment them (quietly) on their input/answers. That s a good point. I really appreciate what you said about that 3. What if you have a problem in the group? Don t ignore the problem. Correct in private - praise in public. Never be afraid to ask for help from your Group Pastor or Care & Support. 4. What if someone in the group needs advice? We are not experts in all areas, so be willing to listen to someone in your group, but know there are experts in all fields who may be able to help them be er. There are many excellent books in the bookstore rela ng to specific topics your par cipants may need advice about rela onships, divorce, addic ons, raising children and teens, etc. 5. Be familiar with how to refer someone to Care & Support for counseling or to one of their support classes. You will find this informa on on the CBC website under: h p:// 6. What if you collect money? Purchase gi card or CPS cer ficate for specific need. Present any cash collec on to your leader support administrator for CBC check request. 27

4. Discussion helps self-esteem. Hearing what someone else has dealt with in the past or present can and does give us courage to face our own lives. When real people discuss the issues of real life in the light of real faith, we begin to see our self as God sees us. 5. Discussion provides the leader with insight as to how they can minister to the group and to individuals in the group. Ask God for discernment to see past the presen ng issue to the root issue. God is likely to equip you with just the right word, prayer, scripture, or touch to minister to that par cular need. Learn to let silence be your friend. Silence is o en an open door for the Holy Spirit to move in the thoughts and hearts of all the par cipants. Silence can also give you, the leader, an opportunity to pray and discern what might best minister to an individual at this par cular me. Welcome and Overview Welcome to leadership at Community Bible Church and Adult Groups! You are about to partner with God in an effort to fulfill what is some mes referred to as The Great Commission, which is to make disciples, teaching them to follow God s Word. God gives us the promise of the Holy Spirit and He is always with you as you serve in the area of leadership. Your pastor and the Adult Groups Department are commi ed to equip you to u lize your unique gi s and talents, thus op mizing your leadership efforts. Feeling a bit anxious, maybe even unworthy about all of that? Remember, God does not always call the equipped. He will however, equip the called. Our prayer is that you will experience the joy and sa sfac on of just being a willing servant as you watch God work in some fairly incredible ways through your leadership. In fact, we can hardly wait to hear how God has worked in the lives of those in your Group. We want to give you the tools and encouragement you need to serve Christ in the manner in which He has called you. So, let s get started! Statement of Faith As Adult Group Leaders, you are extending the arms of Christ both inside and outside the walls of our church. You are building the bridge to Christ for many of our members, as well as sharing in the matura on process for others. Therefore, it is essen al that we are in unity regarding the basics of the Chris- an faith. All leaders are expected to familiarize themselves with the Statement of Faith of CBC, and to refrain from leading in ways that would be in contradic on to our Statement of Faith. 3

What We Believe Leader Tips God - is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. He eternally exists in three dis nct persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (commonly known as the Trinity). These three are co-equal and are one God. (Genesis 1:1,26,27, 3:22; Psalm 90:2; Ma hew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14; 1 Peter 1:2) Jesus Christ - is the Son of God. He is co-equal with the Father. Jesus lived a sinless human life and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead a er three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to Heaven's glory and will return again someday to earth to reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. (Isaiah 9:6; Ma hew 1:22, 23; John 1:1-5; 14:10-30; Acts 1:9-11; Romans 1:3, 4; 6:6; 7:4-6; 8:1-4; 1 Corinthians 15:3, 4; 1 Timothy 6:14, 15; Titus 2:13; Hebrews 4:14, 15) The Holy Spirit - is co-equal with the Father and the Son of God. He is present in the world to make men aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every Chris an from the moment of salva on. He provides the Chris an with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. He gives every believer spiritual gi s when they are saved. Chris ans are to yield to and trust the Holy Spirit to enable them to live holy, loving, and produc ve lives that bear much fruit and glorify God. (John 16:7-13, 14:16,17; Acts 1:8; 1 Corinthians 2:12, 3:16; 2 Corinthians 3:17; Gala ans 5:25; Ephesians 1:13; 5:18) The Bible - is God's Word to us. It was wri en by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme source of truth for Chris an beliefs and living. Because it is inspired by God, it is the truth without any mixture of error. (Psalm 119:105, 160, 12:6; Proverbs 30:5; 2 Timothy 3:16; 1:13; 2 Peter 1:20, 21) People - are made in the spiritual image of God and are to be like Him in character. People are the supreme object of God's crea on. Although every person has tremendous poten al for good, they are all marred by an a tude of disobedience toward God and His word called "sin". This sin has separated mankind from God. (Genesis 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6a; 59:1,2; Romans 3:23) Salva on - is God's free gi to us but we must accept it. We can never make up for our sin by selfimprovement or good works. Only by trus ng in Jesus Christ as God's offer of forgiveness can anyone be saved from sin's penalty. When we turn from our sin and turn to Jesus in faith we are saved. Eternal life begins the moment one receives Jesus Christ into his life by faith. We are saved from hell to be with Jesus forever in Heaven. (John 14:6, 1:12; Romans 5:1; 6:23; Gala ans 3:26; Ephesians 2:8, 9; Titus 3:5) Use a Group Covenant (and share this in your first mee ng): 1. Commit to a end mee ngs. 2. Everyone par cipates and no one person dominates. 3. Respect each person s opinions. * Agree on essen al beliefs * Avoid an all must or none can stand on issues that are not essen al beliefs. 4. There is no such thing as a dumb ques on, answer or comment. 5. Anything said in the discussion is confiden al to that group. 6. Be respec ul to others (husbands, friends, etc.) when sharing with your group. 7. Understand that new members may be added to the group. Group Dynamics: 1. Discussion promotes ac on: * James 1: Discussion allows one to ponder and look intently at the material or godly principle. * Ma hew 7: Discussion encourages one to apply scriptural principles to life. 2. Discussion promotes openness: * When you hear someone else express what you are thinking, it gives you the courage to reveal your thoughts as well. 3. Discussion inspires the individuals in the group and provides reinforcement and clarifica on. * Ah I am doing something right! * If she can do that, so can I. * An ac ve listener mirrors what he/she hears to clarify what the person is saying, and asks open ended ques ons. * Group discussion can be a big encouragement to one another. 25

What We Believe Since that me, Jesus has done this in my life Jesus is doing this in my life today Bap sm - is immersing a willing Chris an under water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It is an act of obedience that iden fies a person with Jesus Christ. (Ma hew 28:19-20; Mark 1:9; Acts 8:36-39; 18:8) Repentance - is turning from your sins. There are several lists of sins against God in the New Testament. (Ma hew 4:17, 3:8, I Corinthians 6, Gala ans 5, Ephesians 4, Colossians 3, Romans 1, 2, I Timothy 3 and James) Eternal Security of the Believer- Because God gives us eternal life through Jesus Christ, the true believer is secure in that salva on for eternity. If you have been genuinely saved, you cannot lose it. Salva on is maintained by the grace and power of God, not by the self-effort of the Chris an. It is the grace and power of God that gives us this security. We don't think a person can lose his or her salva on. Salva on is a gi based on the work of Jesus Christ, not our own. (John 10:28-29; 2 Timothy 1:12; Hebrews 7:25, 10:10, 14; 1 Peter 1:3-5) Eternity - People were created to exist forever. We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin, or we will exist eternally with God through forgiveness and salva on. To be eternally separated from God is hell. To be eternally in union with Him is eternal life. Heaven and hell are real places of eternal existence. (Ma hew 25:31-46; John 3:16; 14:17; Romans 6:23; 8:17-18; 1 Corinthians 2:7-9; Revela on 20:15) Denomina onal Affilia on - Community Bible Church is a conserva ve, evangelical, interdenomina onal Bible Church. We are not affiliated with any one denomina on or organiza on, but we work with all those who confess Jesus as Lord. (Psalms 133:1; Romans 12:16; 14:19; 15:5; Ephesians 4:4-6) Spiritual Gi s - are special abili es the Holy Spirit gives whenever, wherever, and to whomever He wants. These gi s always glorify Jesus and build up the church. We let the Spirit be in charge of His gi s. (Acts 2, Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12:14, Ephesians 4) Divorce and Remarriage - God hates divorce and so do about half the people who go through one. We do not encourage divorce. We encourage reconcilia on and restora on of marriage. We recognize divorce as the legal and binding dissolu on of a marriage. We do not make marriage, divorce, or remarriage the single qualifying or disqualifying issues for leadership in the church. (Deuteronomy 24, Jeremiah 3, Malachi 2, Ma hew 5:27-48, 19, Mark 10, Luke 16, 1 Corinthians 7) 5

What We Believe My Personal Tes mony Angels and Demons - are spiritual beings that work to carry out the purposes of God or Satan. (Daniel 6:22; Ma hew 4:10-11; Acts 12:7; Ephesians 6:10-18; Hebrews 1:14) Missions - We support missionaries and mission organiza ons on five of the seven con nents. Our main support goes to church-plan ng missionaries and organiza ons. (Ma hew 24:14, 28:18-20; Acts 1:7-8; Romans 15:20-22) Abor on - We are pro-life and take an ac ve stand against those who promote or support abor on. We show mercy and kindness to those who have had an abor on. (Jeremiah 1:5; Mark 9:36-37; Luke 18:15-17) My life before receiving Christ. Government - We encourage our members to educate themselves, vote, a end mee ngs, and get involved in government at all levels. (Romans 13, 1 Timothy 2:1-6) Church Membership - is a commitment between a Chris an and a local church, an agreement to support and encourage one another in life and ministry. (Acts 2:41). We do not contact your old church when you join CBC. Priesthood of Every Believer - The Bible teaches that every Chris an is called to full- me Chris an living, regardless of his or her voca on. We prac ce the truth that every believer is a minister by encouraging every member to find a place of service and ministry. Every believer has direct access to God through prayer and Bible reading. (1 Peter 2:5, Revela on 1:6) Tithing to the Local Church - At Community Bible Church, we prac ce thing for the support of Christ's body, the church, in obedience to God's Word. We recognize that giving 10% of our income is a Biblical principle that honors God and requires faith in God as our financial provider. (Proverbs 3:9; Malachi 3:10; Ma hew 23:23) Spirit-led Living - We believe the only way to live the Chris an life is by trus ng in God's Spirit within us. We seek to prac ce a daily dependence not on ourselves, but on Christ with us to enable us to live holy, loving, and produc ve lives that bear much fruit and glorify God! (Ephesians 5:18; Philippians 2:13; John 15:5) Telling Others About Christ - It is the privilege of every Chris an to share the Good News with those whom God brings into our lives. We share our personal experience about Christ and invite friends to church. (1 Peter 3:15) How I realized I needed Christ and when I received Him as Lord 23

How to Share your Story CBC Mission Statement That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched this we proclaim concerning the Word of Life. The life appeared; we have seen it and tes fy to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 1 John 1:1-3 (NIV) John very carefully gave tes mony about Jesus. The Apostle tes fies to what he had heard, seen, and touched. He wants his readers to know that Jesus is real. 1. Sharing a personal tes mony about Jesus is a wonderful and helpful way to witness. a. Throughout the en re New Testament, many, many examples are given of people who shared (the Samaritan woman, the blind man, John, etc.) b. There was this irresis ble urge by believers to tell others about Jesus. c. Three mes in the book of Acts, Paul uses his personal tes mony (Acts 9:1-22, Acts 22:3-16, Acts 26:9-10). 2. Every Chris an has a tes mony to share. a. Every tes mony is unique and interes ng. Every tes mony captures the a en on and holds an audience. b. Your tes mony is personal and cannot be refuted. 3. What is your tes mony? a. State briefly about your life and the condi on of your life before Christ. b. Give adequate details and precise informa on about how Jesus became the Lord and Savior of your life. c. Bring your tes mony up to date by sharing what Christ has done in your life since your 4. Tes mony helps: salva on, and what He is doing in your life today. a. Use a language that a non-chris an can understand. b. Prepare your story to be told in less than 3 minutes.
