2 Pre-sale dinner tickets for the Fall Festival (Saturday November 11 th ) will be sold after Masses on the weekend of November 4 th & 5 th. Tickets will also be available during the Fall Festival. The dinner is: $9 for adults, $8 for seniors (62 and over), $5 for children (6-12), and all active duty and military veterans eat for FREE. Items that we need donated: New or gently used items for the Holiday Booth. Cakes for the cake booth and desserts for dinner (please place a label on the item identifying what it is). Last year we ran out, so we need a lot more this year. Jars (with candy, toys, and other goodies) for the jar booth. Baskets (with candy, toys, etc.) for the basket booth. 2-liter bottles of pop/soda for the kid s games. Items needed for the silent auction (please turn in by November 6): If your family s last name begins with A-M (shopping gift cards or lottery tickets). If your last name begins with N- Z (restaurant gift cards or lottery tickets). 5 4th ANNUAL FALL FESTIVAL CAKE EVENT On Wednesday November 8, 2017, starting at 6:30 PM, will we be baking cakes in the Marian Center kitchen to use in the cake booth and for the dessert room. This is an opportunity for adults to meet and fellowship with other parishioners in a relaxed atmosphere! Please bring 1 or more boxes of cake mix, baking pan and a portable mixer. All other ingredients and supplies will be provided. On Thursday November 9, 2017, starting at 6:30 PM, we will decorate those cakes in the cafeteria. All supplies will be provided. Showtime is 3 p.m. The Knights of Columbus will sponsor a Spaghetti lunch at 2 p.m. Cost for the lunch: $7/adults (13+), $5 children (6-12), ages 5 and under eat free! CATHOLIC SERVICES APPEAL 2017 Our Parish Target: $49, Participation Goal: 227 Families Thanks to those who have already responded with a gift to the 2017 Catholic Services Appeal. Prayers Your prayers are requested for the repose of the soul of our parishioner, Sidney Dearinger, husband of Carrie. Toy Drive The Knights of Columbus will again sponsor a Christmas Toy Drive in care of the Agape Shop. Please bring new or gently used toys and drop them in the boxes provided in the narthex during the month of November. The toys will be delivered to the Agape Shop on December 1, and will be available to their customers shortly thereafter. Christmas Cards The Knights of Columbus will be selling Christmas cards in the narthex after each Mass. Sales start on Sunday, November 12, and will run through December 3, or until we run out of boxes. Stop by the K of C table and get your Christmas cards early. We have a good assortment and you don t want to miss out. News for Knights: Due to our tremendous growth, we are seeking to add an additional Field Agent in your area. The Word in Our Lives Not My Problem Paul was not bragging when he talked about the toil and drudgery he endured while proclaiming the gospel. He makes a point of his working so as not to burden anyone. He worked to support himself, rather than asking the new Christians to support him just the opposite of what the scribes and Pharisees were doing, according to the gospel. Jesus accused them of laying heavy burdens on people, without helping them to bear those burdens. So what kind of burdens did the Pharisees impose? The Pharisees and scribes were very familiar with the laws of their Jewish religion. Almost every detail of daily life was covered by some law. And they could be very persuasive about strictly keeping those laws. Originally those laws and regulations were meant to set the Hebrews apart from other peoples, to be a sign of holiness. For example, the Ten Commandments are based on loving God above all else (first three commandments) and loving your neighbor (last seven.) But over the years, rabbis added more and more details to the laws, until it was almost impossible to keep them all straight. But what if someone needed help on a Sabbath? If you broke a Sabbath rule, even for a good reason, you could not go to the Pharisees to get an exemption. They would say, Not my problem. Remember the times Jesus cured the sick on the Sabbath, and how they condemned him for working on the day of rest. Jesus, however, came to remind us that holiness is more important than scrupulosity. If we truly live the ideal of loving God with our whole being and loving our neighbor, we will find that love is much easier to bear than the fear of doing something wrong. Jesus also gave us his Holy Spirit to help guide us in the path of holiness. And through his death on the cross, Jesus gave us forgiveness if we do commit a sin.
