What you can gain, accomplish, own or save? Where you can visit? Is this what Jesus pointed to when He spoke about advancing the Kingdom of God? It is far too easy for me to get caught up in the world s game. I was reading an article recently that mentioned the late Oscar-winning actor, Philip Seymour Hoffman s view on the important things in life. A couple of years ago, he was quoted as saying that all of the things that we can amass in this life are not what gives us value. Rather, he identified the knowledge of being loved as what makes us get out of bed each morning. Isn t that what Jesus taught? "No one can be a slave of two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot be slaves of God and of money. This is why I tell you: Don't worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn't life more than food and the body more than clothing? (Matthew 6:24-25 CSB). Hoffman died of a drug overdose, having taken heroin and prescription drugs. At the age of 46, his life ended with a needle in his arm. He was gifted as an actor. His hands were full of things. His philosophy about love was right on target. The problem with him is the same as with most people, he believed something that he did not practice. Maybe it could be said differently: He believed something that he wanted but did not have the self-control or faith to gain? To displace all the things that money can buy (that every one of us wants to some degree) with intangible faith in God is very difficult. The flesh gets in the way, at least in my case. Look at Jesus statement closely. He is not mentioning the accessories of life, Page 2 the things we want but could live without; He is mentioning the staples of life food, drink, clothing. Jesus is certainly not deemphasizing the need for life s basics, but He is accentuating faith. Faith and love go together. We are to love God with all of our beings and love others as ourselves (Mark 12:30-31). What I am finding, through some personal research, is that relationships in the form of friendships are the most important thing to our wellbeing. Food, clothing and water give us physical strength, but friendships give us emotional stability and pleasure. There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother (Prov 18:24). His name is Jesus. Using Him as the starting point, now go from there in developing true and lasting relationships. It is worth your effort.

3 Page 3 2 CORINTHIANS 8:7 FROM THE LEADERSHIP TEAM The Leadership Team has been working with Miss Angie to build a new playground. Miss Angie has been designing layouts and collecting quotes. We re finding there is a lot more to building a new playground besides new equipment for the children to play on. There is different equipment for different age groups, fencing, special mats to protect the children and to keep our famous Georgia red clay out of their clothes, storage buildings, walkways, security, additional insurance, removal of the old, etc. Every time we talk about it, we find there is more to do. But it will all be worth it as this will help attract new families to our family as well as give our current children a chance to have more fun. We want it to be a showcase for our community. We have been blessed with people who have donated to this project. It is a big project. Commercial playground equipment gave us all a case of sticker shock. Adding all the extra necessities, we are looking at a $30,000 to $40,000 project. More funding is needed to build a playground our fami- lies will be proud of. We re asking all to pray and consider making a donation to this project. 4 IN SP IRATION Page 4 NEWS FROM THE WORSHIP PASTOR Please God, Not Man One of the most challenging Scriptures in the Epistles is Galatians 1:10 which is about honoring God instead of men. Paul says, Am I now trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ. Paul is writing in the context of preaching the full Gospel. Parts of the Gospel message were offensive to listeners. And it required great courage for him to preach the whole Gospel and not just the parts that were easy to swallow. As a servant of Christ, we are called to please one person Jesus Christ. How easy it is for us (especially those of us who are natural people pleasers) to seek the accolades of people. Let s face it, we all appreciate an encouraging word or a well done slap on the back from others. The rub comes when things are not going so well in our ministries. Attendance is down, giving is down, or there is a critical spirit in the church or the leadership. This is when the temptation arises to try and change things, to make things better. Later we realize we are operating more in the flesh than the spirit. And all our efforts and energy have not generated a lasting change, but merely placated some of the naysayers. Thankfully, when we choose to please God and Him alone, we will please those around us as well. But there will be times when we can t make everyone happy. It s during those times that we need great courage to walk the path of faith, choosing to please the only One who gave up everything for us. Bryan Paine "Love God Completely, Love People Deeply" CLASSIC CAR CRUISE-IN CRUISE-IN/ TRAIN SHOW / CAR WASH On Saturday, May 10th from 9am-1pm we will host the Sandy Plains Classic Cruise-In.
