Position Title: Minster of Osoyoos United Church and Oliver United Church Position Profile: Full-time Part-time If Part-time, hours/week Solo Team ministry (# of other Ministry Personnel): Position Summary: (2-4 sentences that summarize the position) We need a spiritual Leader who will fulfill the spiritual and pastoral care needs of our two congregations. The Sunday services are our main need. We would like someone with the leadership skills to guide us in our efforts to grow and expand our congregations. We need a minister who is skilled at adapting to change and who can encourage and challenge the congregations in continuing outreach and community service. The year appointment is intended as an experiment to learn more about what it looks like to share in ministry together while maintaining worship opportunities in both communities. This position description is understood as a foundation for engaging the opportunities for ministry and mission in a new way. The expectation of both communities is that the minister will help guide the learning about sharing in ministry while retaining the identity of a UCC worship in each community. The hope is that opportunities for deeper understanding and sharing of mission, ministry and resources will emerge and be explored beyond the limits of this initial description. Accountable to: This position is accountable to the governing body of the local ministry unit, through the Ministry and Personnel Committee. This position is accountable to BC Conference/Pacific Mountain Regional Council for oversight and discipline. This position has a relationship of support and collegiality with the members of their presbytery/region. A joint ministry and personnel team will be established to coordinate schedules, support and oversight. A task group of the council chairs or designates will meet monthly to work out shared response to any issues and opportunities that arise. Administration: 6 hours/week The successful candidate will attend all Council meetings and work closely with office staff and various committees in each church to ensure the smooth and coordinated functioning of the churches. The minister will work closely with each Worship Committee and Music Director

3 BC 400 MPSR Page 3 of 5 January 2014 when planning the Sunday morning Order of Worship. A joint team of minister and musicians will help facilitate worship planning. Community Outreach and Social Justice: 4 hours/week We would like the minister to be visible and active within each community. The minister will help us to develop new ways to reach out and be involved in the local community and support existing outreach efforts. These are lay led activities. Present programmes and activities: Both churches: M&S contributions, pancake suppers, tea and bake sales, musical events, provision of space for community groups: Grandmothers for Africa - meetings and events, Addiction Group - meetings. White Gift offerings given to local groups, Blue Christmas services, Mayors breakfasts for ministers. World Day of Prayer services. Osoyoos: We have a very successful Thrift Shop which provides support to the church, and through which donations are made to local and national groups. Other services are food coupon distribution. Christmas Eve offerings go to a chosen local group, e.g. school muffin programme. Oliver: Fall dinner, successful soup kitchen, space for Community Choir group to practice and hold performances, Jesse tree - collecting of hats, scarves, mitts and scarves Continuing Education: Study leave according to United Church guidelines to pursue vocational and professional goals. Church Community and Neighbourhood: 2 hours/week Our minister needs to be active in local multi-faith and ecumenical programmes and in the wider aspects of the United Church. Faith Formation and Christian Education: 4 hours/week The successful candidate will be able to organize Christian studies for adults as well as encourage lay led activities for children and youth. We would like to have some professional development for the Council and Committees. The minister will perform baptisms and weddings as the need arises. Leadership: The minister needs to be able to encourage, support and motivate leadership from the congregation and needs to be visible and active within the community. We would like a minister who is creative, upbeat and willing to try new ideas in working with our communities. The purpose of this experiment in sharing a full-time minister is to find and deepen opportunities to share in mission and ministry together. The minister needs to be willing to take initiative in suggesting and trying some new approaches in this sharing, balancing the need for pastoral presence to existing members with boldness in new initiatives.

4 BC 400 MPSR Page 4 of 5 January 2014 Pastoral Care: 10 hours/week The minister needs to provide support for those needing help with change and/or crisis situations and provide support in times of bereavement. The minister will conduct funeral and memorial services. Both churches would like to look at training a group of lay people to help with pastoral care in the future. Self Care: The minister needs to have good time management skills and be able to set goals to maintain a healthy balance and meet their own physical, emotional and spiritual needs: including rest, recreation and professional development. All of this will be with support from the M&P Committee and Regional Ministers. Worship: 14 hours/ week The minister leads and enables the exploration and celebration of God s presence through preaching, liturgy, prayer, music and drama at weekly Sunday services and special services throughout the year. The minister will encourage lay participation in worship services. The minister will administer the sacraments in accordance with the policies of the United Church of Canada. Opportunities for shared worship with both congregations will be explored. Worship will take place in Osoyoos at 9:30 am and in Oliver at 11 am. Other Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Experience in guiding, leading and prioritizing activities. Display strong interest in and ability to connect with the Church Council and Committees, office staff and music leader. Meaningful sermons which interpret the scriptures for today. We are open to other worship styles and possible additional services at different times to reach out to the younger crowd! Knowledge of computers and various programmes such as Power Point. Good interpersonal skills. Some training and experience in dealing with difficult people would be helpful. Other Preferred Assets: musical interests, sense of humour, flexibility and creative interest in motivation and involving youth and adult arts and sports groups in our church. Oliver: Support and help to continue our Children s Ministry. Osoyoos: Ability to communicate well with our year-round members and Winter snow bird families. Terms of Employment: The United Church Manual, The United Church Employment Guidelines, the original Call/Appointment Form, and any relevant Provincial Legislation shall be used as terms of employment for this position.
