REFLECTIONS I didn't come to the conviction easily, but finally there was no getting around it: there can be no maturity in the spiritual life, no obedience in following Jesus, no wholeness in the Christian life apart from an immersion and embrace of community. I am not myself by myself. Community, not the highly vaunted individualism of our culture, is the setting in which Christ is at play. Eugene Peterson Christ Plays in Ten Thousand Places The congregation, not the building, is holy the church is holy because the congregation is the house of God. Edmund Clowney Believers are never told to become one; we already are one and expected to act like it. Joni Earekson Tada For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body Jews or Greeks, slaves or free and all were made to drink of one Spirit. The Apostle Paul I Corinthians 12:12,13

Thank you. PRELUDE How Deep the Father's Love for Us Please use this time for prayer and meditation as we prepare to go before the living God in worship. arr. Mark Hayes PRAISE CALL TO WORSHIP: from 1 Corinthians 1 To those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom we were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Today, you will hear the word of the cross, which is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. Come, and hear the message of Christ crucified, a stumbling block to many, but to those who are called, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. Come, let us worship! HYMN OF PRAISE: 43 You Righteous, in the Lord Rejoice PRAYER OF PRAISE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen. 2
C O N F E S S I O N SCRIPTURE READING: Psalm 37: Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers! For they will soon 3 fade like the grass and wither like the green herb. Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in 4 the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the 5 6 desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. He will 7 bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, 8 over the man who carries out evil devices! Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not 9 yourself; it tends only to evil. For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the 10 Lord shall inherit the land. In just a little while, the wicked will be no more; though you 11 look carefully at his place, he will not be there. But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace. Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! CORPORATE CONFESSION OF SIN: All-powerful, all-knowing, and all-righteous God, we humbly bow in your presence. We come confessing our sins before you and before one another. You are faithful, but we struggle to trust you. You are good, but we fail to delight in you. You call us to be still, but we are restless and filled with anxiety and fear. Forgive us for thinking our worrying can control you or that our anger and wrath are ways to control others. Have mercy on us. Teach us to trust in you, delight in you, wait upon you and love you. Lord Jesus, by your Spirit and for your glory, love the world through us by making us meek and humble. We ask this in Christ's name. Amen. SILENT REFLECTION AND CONFESSION WORDS OF ASSURANCE & PEACE OF GOD: from 1 Corinthians 1 God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even the things that are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him, we are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord. May the peace of God be with you all. And also with you. 3
HYMN: 518 Christ, of All My Hopes the Ground C O M M I T M E N T OFFERTORY PRAYER OFFERTORY Nothing But the Blood arr. Cindy Berry Presentation of tithes & offerings DOXOLOGY (Hymnal, page 731) AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. RESPONSE: 735 Gloria Patri PRAYER OF INTERCESSION 4 HYMN: Speak, O Lord (lyrics on page 6)
P R E A C H I N G O F T H E W O R D SCRIPTURE: Ephesians 4:1-6 1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to 2 which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with 3 4 one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your 5 6 call one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. SERMON: One Rev. Jeff Pate HYMN: 420 At the Lamb s High Feast We Sing RESPONSIVE READING: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right for us to give thanks and praise. As the Lord Jesus, the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread and offered thanksgiving to God, so too we now offer to God our thanks and praise. 6 S P E A K, O L O R D 1. Speak, O Lord, as we come to You to receive the food of Your Holy Word. Take Your truth, plant it deep in us; shape and fashion us in Your likeness, That the light of Christ might be seen today in our acts of love and our deeds of faith. Speak, O Lord, and fulfill in us all Your purposes for Your glory. 2. Teach us, Lord, full obedience, holy reverence, true humility; Test our thoughts and our attitudes in the radiance of Your purity. Cause our faith to rise; cause our eyes to see your majestic love and authority. Words of pow r that can never fail let their truth prevail over unbelief. 3. Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds; help us grasp the heights of Your plans for us Truths unchanged from the dawn of time that will echo down through eternity. And by grace we ll stand on Your promises, and by faith we ll walk as You walk with us. Speak, O Lord, till Your church is built and the earth is filled with Your glory.
