1Timothy 4 7 But reject profane and old wives fables, and exercise yourself toward godliness. 8 For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.
9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance. 10 For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. 11 These things command and teach.
12 Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 13 Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. 14 Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.
15 Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. 16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you. NKJV
1Timothy 4 7 But reject profane and old wives fables(mythos), and exercise (gymnazo) yourself toward godliness. NKJV
Hebrews 12 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith NKJV
1Timothy 4 7 But reject profane and old wives fables(mythos), and exercise (gymnazo) yourself toward godliness. NKJV
Nothing but silly fictions, fit only for senile, childish old crones to chatter about. Hiebert, 1Timothy
1Timothy 1 4 nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith. ESV
Ephesians 5 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. NKJV
Amos 3 7 Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets. NKJV
1Timothy 4 8 For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. 9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance. NKJV
Physical training is limited to just that the physical dimensions of life. Godliness, on the other hand, penetrates every aspect of life. Godliness affects everything: our view of self, marriage, parenting, business, civic responsibilities, environmental outlook, relationship with our next-door neighbors. Nothing escapes godliness; it covers everything. Larson, K. (2000). I & II Thessalonians, I & II Timothy, Titus, Philemon (Vol. 9, p. 206). Nashville, TN: Broadman & Holman
Orthorexia Nervosa It is characterized by a fixation or desire to eat only healthy foods, or to avoid entire food groups. Every person suffering with orthorexia has their own food preferences; foods they will eat and foods that they won t. Orthorexics feel isolated from or superior to people who may consume a food they themselves reject.
The most common form of orthorexia is an obsession with healthy foods, i.e. never eating foods that contain additives, and planning one s diet to the extreme to make sure that undesired foods and food groups are not consumed. Web MD
Mark 8 35 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel s will save it. 36 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? NKJV
1Timothy 4 10 For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. 11 These things command and teach. NKJV
Isaiah But you did not look to its Maker, Nor did you have respect for Him who fashioned it long ago. NKJV
Proverbs 3 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.
7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the LORD and depart from evil. 8 It will be health to your flesh, And strength to your bones. NKJV
We do not believe and then add works to our faith, just to make sure. We do not believe and then make up additional rules for righteousness. We put full trust in Christ, resting in his righteousness. Our spiritual discipline and godly training are designed not to gain favor with God but to reinforce our trust in him. Larson, K. (2000). I & II Thessalonians, I & II Timothy, Titus, Philemon (Vol. 9, pp ). Nashville, TN: Broadman & Holman Publishers.
1Timothy 4 12 Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. NKJV
In word - Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer (Psalm 19:4). We saw last week that out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks (Matt. 12:34). In conduct - lives that are to be controlled by the Word of God. They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work (Titus 1:16).
In love (agape) Putting other people s interest above our own. Love is the Holy Spirit s action in our life, the evidence of our relationship with the God who rules. In faith - If Timothy trusts God to do what he has promised, he will be a great model of faith for the people in his care. In purity - The word purity suggests integrity in one s relationships with people of the opposite sex
1Timothy 4:12 But you should be a good model (or, example) for the believers to follow (or, imitate), by the words you speak, your behavior (or, way of life), your love for others, your trust in Christ, and your blameless life. Arichea, D. C., & Hatton, H. (1995). A handbook on Paul s letters to Timothy and to Titus (p. 104). New York: United Bible Societies.
1Timothy 4 13 Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. NKJV
88 percent said they own a Bible. 80 percent think the Bible is sacred. 61 percent wish they read the Bible more. The average household has 4.4 Bibles. 57 percent read their Bibles four times a year or less. Only 26 percent of Americans said they read their Bible on a regular basis (four or more times a week). The Barna Research Group The State of the Bible 2013
I see the problem as analogous to obesity in America. We have an awful lot of people who realize they re overweight, but they don t follow a diet. People realize the Bible has values that would help us in our spiritual health, but they just don t read it. Doug Birdsall, president of American Bible Society
1Timothy 4 14 Do not neglect the gift (charismatos) that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. NKJV
1Timothy 4 15 Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. NKJV
1Timothy 4 16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you. NKJV
