1 List of prerequisites that must be completed before the weekend. 1. Purchase emblem workbook. 2. Contact Pastor, let him/her know that you will be starting work on earning the Religious Emblem, and that you will be working on the emblem at a weekend retreat. Present them the letter to the Pastor. 3. The project for Unit I, requires a daily reading. We are requiring the reading of one chapter of Matthew every day for a month (see reading list that you should have received with this list of prerequisites) and write a paragraph about that chapter and think about the question for that chapter. 4. (Lesson 3 No. 2) Learn the history of your own congregation. Who started it? Why? When? Write some of your discoveries. 5. (Lesson 3 No. 3) Congregations that are bound together by common belief and history are called denominations (or fellowships or associations). Does your congregation belong to a denomination? If so, learn about your denomination s story. a. Name two or three reasons for your denomination s founding. b. Name some of the key people who helped start your denomination.
2 c. List several important dates in your denomination s history. d. Name some specific beliefs and practices that are important to your denomination. e. Name several beliefs that you have in common with other Christian groups. 6. (Lesson 3 No. 4) Many churches use creeds or statements of faith, to remind them of what they believe about God and Jesus Christ. If one is used in your church, read it closely then memorize it. After you learn it, recite it to an adult, explain what it means to you. Then have the adult sign and date your workbook on page (Lesson 5) Visit the sanctuary in your church. What are the things you see there? Fill in each part of the stained-glass window with words and drawings of the items you see in the sanctuary. Find out how they are used and how they contribute to the worship service. (Workbook Lesson 5, page 19). 8. (Lesson 5 No. 1) What is the order of worship for your congregation? List the main parts of the worship service, and explain and why they appear in the order that they do. 9. (Lesson 5 No. 2) Be prepared to discuss the following: a. What is the role of the pastor and others in leading worship?
3 b. What different types of worship services does your congregation have? What worship opportunities exist outside of Sunday morning worship? c. What worship resources are used in the worship services? d. How is music an important part of worship? e. What happens at Baptism and explain in significance. f. Describe how Holy Communion is celebrated in your congregation and explain its significance. Attend a service that includes Communion. g. What are the special days in the church calendar? Describe the traditions that your congregation has for these special worship services. 10. (Project 2) Attend a worship service at a church of a different denomination than your own church. What are the similarities and differences between the worship services? 11. (Lesson 7 No.1) Learn about the structure of your congregation that enables it to effective witnessing and ministering. Draw a chart that shows how your church is organized. Write about what you did? 12. (Lesson 7 2) Fill in the chart (last page of this list) to show all the ways that your church reaches out to people in your own congregation, to people in your community, and to people outside your community.
4 13. (Lesson 7 No. 3) One of the results of the church s witnessing and ministering to people is people s coming to Christ. What if someone wants to join your congregation? Find out how people become members of your congregation. List the requirements for membership. 14. (Project 3 No. 2) Get involved with the ministry of your congregation and volunteer 5 hours of service. Write about what you did? What was difficult? What did you enjoy? What did you learn? 15. (Project 3 No. 3) Get involved at a community agency. Choose a program that you feel strongly about. Volunteer 5 hours of service. Write about what you did? What was difficult? What did you enjoy? What did you learn? 16. (Project 3 No. 1) Invite someone to church, Sunday school, youth group, or to join you and others in a caring activity (a service project). Tell them ahead of time what to expect. Afterwards interview them, what was their expectations before and what were their reactions after.
