1 The Anchor THIS WEEK IN MISSION AND MINISTRY Friday, November 11, 2016 Coming up this Week Sunday 11/13 In the morning: 8, 9, & 11 AM Services All Saints Sunday No Forum: In the evening Real Love Group 4PM Dinner 5:30, Youth 6PM Monday 11/14 Book Club, Davis Hall, 1:30 PM Tuesday 11/15 Bible Study 10:30AM AA 8PM Wednesday 11/16 Morning Prayer 9AM TOPS 9:30AM Holy Eucharist 6:30PM Friday 11/18 Men s Discussion Group INSIDE Adult Forum 2 Parish Life 3 Special Events & Adult Programs 4 Youth 5 Not all the news in the Bible sounds like good news. The Apocalyptic language Jesus uses in the Sunday s gospel from Luke is a case in point. We can see it in lots of other places as well: in the book of Daniel, parts of Ezekiel and Isaiah, in parallel narratives in Matthew and Mark, in bits and pieces of St. Paul and, perhaps most famously, in the Book of the Revelation to John. In Luke s contribution we can see at least three important things which are also shared in these other places of Holy Scripture. First there is the question of brutal reality of suffering. People from ancient times right into the present wonder where God is in the brokenness of the world. The second point Jesus affirms to us in this passage, as God does throughout Scripture, is that the world is not abandoned by God nor is God the source of affliction. We often enough to bring such things on ourselves. On the other hand, some things are mysteries themselves and part of our broken world. Thirdly is the implicit question, in such times in whom shall we place our trust? Do we place it in the structures we create, the systems we perpetuate, the temples we build or, rather, do we place them in the living God? Do we rely on ourselves to control and predict events or do we trust in the love of God? The endurance which Jesus commends to us is both the product of faith in God and the power of transformation. The promise of the world is enacted in the world through ordinary people just holding on to grace in the face of everything which seems to defeat that grace. By gaining our lives we gain, in Christ, the life of the world for the world s sake and in the name of God. We are called, in other words, to bless a broken world by our own blessed perseverance to love it, even in spite of itself. This is how we image Christ himself who acts, inexplicably, in the same way towards all of us throughout all time. Blessings! Jamie+ The Rev. We are currently helping muchneeded support to Haiti and Cuba, as well as those places affected in the United States. In Haiti, our support will enable local partners such as the Bishop Tharp Institute (BTI) to provide food and water to displaced people sheltering on the school's campus. We are supporting dioceses along the southern Atlantic coast, providing assistance to local leaders who are reaching out in their communities. After several days of heavy rain, flood levels continue to rise in areas of South Carolina and eastern North Carolina, stranding large numbers of people and prompting evacuations.
