Week of September 2, 2012 People Found a Lost Bible Scroll More than 500 years ago, Johannes Gutenberg invented a method of printing that allowed easier production of multiple copies of printed materials. Prior to Gutenberg, Bibles were Get Ready 1 Get Ready to HEAR, KNOW, DO Bible Truths printed by hand, typically by monks dedicated to that work. By inventing a faster method, Gutenberg opened the way for easier distribution of God s message in the Bible. More than a thousand years before Gutenberg, a young king in the land of Judah demonstrated his recognition of the importance of the Bible message. Read 2 Kings 22:1-20; 23:1-3; Bible Passage 2 Kings 22:1-20; 23:1-3 Bible Truth The Bible is an important and true book. Level of Biblical Learning (Bible) The stories in the Bible are true. Life Application I can learn that the Bible is an important book because it is from God. Bible verse All that the Bible says is from God. 2 Timothy 3:16 Bible Words repair - to fix what is torn or broken lost - forgotten about or cannot be found and 2 Chronicles 34. At what age did Josiah become king? When did he begin seriously to seek God s leadership? (See 2 Chronicles 34:3.) What were Josiah s instructions to Shaphan? Who discovered the book of the law? How did Josiah hear the words of the book? Josiah responded strongly to what he heard. He tore his clothing, a sign of great distress. Josiah sought information and advice from a respected source (2 Kings 22:12-14). The message of God was judgment. Because the people had turned their backs on God, the nation would be destroyed. But Josiah would be spared. Why? God noticed Josiah s repentant response to His Word. Josiah stood before the people and proclaimed his determination to live according to the commands and decrees of the Lord (2 Kings 23:1-3). He would follow God s words recorded in the book of the law. How did the people respond? Did the king s response impact their choice? What is a meaningful Bible verse or passage for you? Why is the Bible important to you? Is it the most important book in your life? What do you want the children you teach to know about the Bible? What do you want them to feel about the Bible? How can you help them experience the teachings of the Bible for themselves? Ask God to guide you as you teach. 6 Learning Centers Lead Kids to HEAR, KNOW, DO Bible Truths 2 Tell the Bible story and repeat the Bible verse to children as they participate in the learning center activities. This will help kindergartners hear and know that the Bible is an important book because it is from God. Print Bible Letters Nature and Science Bible Connection Josiah read the Bible scroll to the people. Materials Bible, Kindergarten Connection weekly pages, Bible Markers (pack item 15a), pencils, paper, rolling pin, play dough Print on paper the words Bible, Josiah, and scroll. Suggest that a child roll out the play dough into the shape of a scroll. Guide each child to look at the first letter of the word Bible and use a pencil to print a B on the play dough. Continue with the first letter of each of the other words. Help the children read the letter or the word it begins. Children may enjoy printing their names or other letters they know. Guide the children to find, circle, and count the hidden Bible scrolls in the Kindergarten Connection activity. Look up the Bible verse and read it together. KID Connection Comment: The Bible is an important book. It is from God. Hammer Paint Creative Art Bible Connection Hilkiah, the priest, found a Bible scroll that had been lost for a long time. Materials Bible, Bible Markers (CD), white construction paper, plastic toy hammers, tempera paint, plastic spoons, shallow trays, painting smocks, newspaper to cover the table Cover the table with newspaper. Place the tempera paint in shallow trays, each with a spoon. Lay the hammers near the paint. After a child has put on a painting smock, guide her to put a spoonful of paint in the center of a piece of paper. Lead her to lay a second piece of paper on top of the paper that has the paint. Invite her to gently hammer the top piece of paper to create a design between the pieces of paper. She can choose one of the papers to save as her art. Offer to print the Bible verse on the edge of each child s hammer painting. KID Connection Say: You used hammers to make art. The men in today s Bible story used hammers to repair the temple. Briefly review the Bible story. Emphasize the finding of the lost Bible scroll. Say: The Bible is the most important book. Find a Lost Bible Scroll Puzzles and Manipulatives Bible Connection The Bible scroll was found while the temple was being repaired. Materials Bible; Bible Word Cards: repair, lost (pack item 14a-d); 3-by-3-inch paper squares; plastic tub; play sand; bowl; Music and More CD; CD player Make simple scrolls by rolling two opposite sides of each paper square toward the center. Hide the scrolls in the tub of sand. As children come to the center, show them the Bible word cards repair and lost. Talk about the meaning of each word. Tell children how important finding the lost Bible scroll was to Josiah. Invite children to take turns finding scrolls buried in the sand. To avoid competition, guide boys and girls to put the scrolls in the bowl as they find them. As children search for scrolls, play The Most Important Book (track 1). Kid Connection The Bible scroll helped Josiah and his people learn more about God. Say: Our Bible story teaches us that the Bible is an important book from God. Week of September 2,

Clean the Room Dramatic Play Bible Connection The temple was dirty and in need of repair. Materials Bible, Teaching Picture (pack item 1), Book: The Most Important Book (pack item 21), spray bottles with water, clean rags, paper, marker Print the Bible verse on the paper. Roll up each end of the paper like a scroll. Hide it in an obvious place in the room. After children come to the center, refer to the teaching picture and tell the Bible story. Comment: The temple in the Bible story was dirty, and the people cleaned it. We can think about this story from the Bible as we clean our room. Show children how to lightly spray a table or chair and dry it with a rag. Note: Children will enjoy cleaning tables, chairs, a chalkboard, and cabinet doors. When children have finished cleaning, read the book The Most Important Book. Kid Connection Ask: What is the most important book? (the Bible) Where did the words in the Bible come from? (God) Repair the Temple Blocks Bible Connection When the workers cleaned and rebuilt the temple, a lost Bible scroll was found. Materials Bible, blocks, sandpaper, clean rags, toy hammers and other tools, assorted pieces of cardboard Invite the children to use the materials to pretend to repair and rebuild the temple. Children may enjoy sanding blocks before using them to build. They can also use the toy tools and cardboard to pretend to rebuild the temple. As children work, comment: In our Bible story, the temple had been neglected by some of the previous kings. It was dirty and needed repair. Tell the Bible story. KID Connection Ask: What did Hilkiah find when they repaired the temple? (a lost Bible scroll) Say: The Bible is the most important book because it is from God. Bonus Ideas Make a Giant Scroll Gather a large sheet of paper, crayons, and markers. Print the Bible marker from the CD. Lead children to use giant letters to print the Bible verse one word at a time. Consider giving each child a letter or a word. Help only as needed. Point to each letter on the Bible marker as the giant verse is printed. Children can use the markers and crayons to illustrate the scroll. Encourage them to work together to roll up each end of the giant paper. Children can take turns unrolling the scroll and reading the Bible verse with you. Print with Gravel Print the words scroll, Bible, Josiah, and God on paper. Children can place pieces of aquarium gravel along the lines and curves of each letter. Point to each word as you read the words together. Teaching Tip Parent Permission Form Send home copies of the Parent Permission Form (CD). Each signed form will provide permission to take pictures or videos at church. Keep signed forms on file, preferably in the church office. Cleanup and HEAR, KNOW, DO Bible Truths 3 Tell children the Bible says to help each other. Encourage the children to help the teachers with cleanup. Play The Bible Teaches Us (track 4) as children clean. 12 Kindergarten Leader Guide

4 Group to HEAR, KNOW, DO Time Bible Truths People Found a Lost Bible Scroll - 2 Kings 22:1-20; 23:1-3 Materials: Bible; Teaching Picture (pack item 1); Bible Word Cards: repair, lost (pack item 14a-d); Bible Markers (pack item 15a); Book: The Most Important Book (pack item 21); toy hammer; Music and More CD; CD player Prepare. Gather materials needed. Insert the Bible marker in the Bible. Post the teaching picture on the wall. Enjoy movements to music. Play It s Time to Move All Around (track 10) and lead children in the motions of the song. Read the Bible verse. Ask for a volunteer to pull the Bible marker from the Bible and read the verse with you. Guide the children to repeat it after you. Sing a song and hear the Bible story. Sing the song The Most Important Book (track 1). Show the Bible word cards and talk about the meaning of each one. Tell the Bible story. Josiah was 8 years old when he became king. Even though he was only a boy, he loved God. When he was a man, King Josiah wanted to continue to obey God and help the people obey God, too. The kings who lived before Josiah did not love God. They had not taken care of the temple. It was dirty and in need of repairs. King Josiah sent his helper Shaphan (SHAY fan) to see the priest, Hilkiah (hil KIGH uh). Shaphan told Hilkiah, Give the money that people have brought to the temple to builders and carpenters who can clean and repair the temple. The workers cleaned the temple and repaired what was broken. Hilkiah, the priest, found a Bible scroll that had been lost for a long time. He said to Shaphan, We ve found a Bible scroll. Shaphan took the scroll to King Josiah. Shaphan said, The men are working in the temple, doing what you told them. Hilkiah gave me this scroll. Shaphan read some of the Bible scroll to the king. When King Josiah heard the words from the Bible scroll, he was sad and upset. The words of this Bible scroll tell us what God wants us to do, Josiah said. We have not been doing these things. We have not been obeying God. Josiah gathered the people at the temple and read the scroll to them. The people listened to the words from the Bible scroll. King Josiah said, I will do what the words of the Bible scroll say to do. I will obey God s rules and laws. I promise to obey God. All of the people promised they would do what the Bible said to do. They would obey God, too. Play a review game. Refer to the teaching picture on the wall. Show the toy hammer. Say: Raise your hand if you know the answer to this question about the Bible story. After a child answers the question, allow her to pretend to hammer a nail by hammering the table five times. Questions to ask may include Who did Josiah love and obey? (God) How old was Josiah when he became king? (8 years old) What was wrong with the temple? (It needed repairs.) What did Hilkiah find? (a Bible scroll) After Josiah read God s words on the Bible scroll, what did he promise the people? (to obey God s words) Pray. Pray: Thank You, God, for the Bible. Help us to understand that it is important because it comes from You. Think about the most important book. Read the book The Most Important Book. Review reasons the Bible is most important. (The words in the Bible are from God; we learn from it; it helps us know what to do.) Family Connection Send home the September Parent Bible Teaching Tips and Parent Permission Form (CD). Give each parent a copy of the Conversation Cards (pack item 16a-b). If you have limited time or teaching staff and need a Quick Plan, include these activities to achieve today s Bible teaching and life application at group time. Week of September 2,

Activities September 2012 Organize Books Suggest that children take books in the classroom (including the Bible) and arrange them on a book shelf. Ask: Which book is most important? Encourage boys and girls to read the books. Comment: The Bible is our most important book. Glue a Name Design Provide colorful scraps of paper and a large piece of construction paper for each child. The boys and girls can tear or cut the scraps of paper into pieces. A child might print his name in large letters and then glue bits of paper to the lines of his name. Kindergartners may prefer to make a design or just fill the page with bits of color. Encourage use of several colors. Comment that we learn in the Bible that God made the seasons. Fall is a time of year that has many changing colors. Say: We can enjoy the Bible in the winter, spring, summer, and fall. Kids on Mission Five-year-old Jianje Nyakoon likes to tell people about Jesus! Jianje learns about Jesus at church and at home with his three sisters and two brothers. Their parents, Enoch and Sandra Nyakoon, are North American Board missionaries in Philadelphia, a big city in Pennsylvania. That s a long way from the jungle village in Liberia where Jianje s father grew up! Every day, Pastor Enoch and his family meet people from other countries in Africa. They tell them about Jesus. They also invite them to Second Chance Community Church. Lots of people come to the school building where Pastor Enoch preaches. Jianje knows people like to worship God at a church building, so he prays, asking God to give them their own special place to worship Him. Pastor Enoch also helps other people start new churches. Sometimes, Jianje s mom makes his favorite foods: soup and fufu, a West African dish made of potatoes, corn, butter, and coconut milk. ETC teachers can use these activities to fill in during transition or waiting times or for a change of pace as needed. They do not require bringing extra materials to ETC. Copy and mail the front and back of this page to each ETC teacher along with the appropriate weekly pages. The Most Important Book September is all about the Bible. Prominently display it in all the activities. Kindergartners will hear that the Bible is true, was written by people who wrote God s words, tells us about God and Jesus, and helps us know what God wants us to do. Tip: Talk with Expression Read Bible stories using body language, voice inflections, and facial expression. This adds interest and thereby increases the children s understanding. Jianje enjoys being with his family. He likes to play games with them and share with his brothers and sisters. He helps his father fix things at home! When he s bigger, he can use Dad s heavy hammer. Jianje also prays for children around the world. He wants everyone to have hope. Will you pray for Jianje and his family? To learn more about North American missions, visit Fall 2012 ETC-1

Activities Continued Balance and Walk Show children how to balance a vinyl baby book on their heads while walking from one side of the room to the other. Give each willing child an opportunity to do the same. Conclude with a statement such as The Bible is a special book that tells us about Jesus. Let children have fun trying again and again to balance the book. Note: A Bible should not be used for the balancing activity. Telling About Jesus Pose this question to kindergartners: If you could not speak the same language as the children around you, how could you tell them about Jesus? Think about missionary children and how they might tell others who speak a different language about Jesus. Ask children to problem solve the following situation: You travel to a different land, and no one else speaks English. You need to use a telephone. How are you going to ask Where is a phone? (Suggest pantomiming actions or drawing pictures.) Let children experiment asking for a phone. Then ask how the boys and girls could tell others about Jesus. Invite them to pantomime or draw some Bible truths such as Jesus loves you. Pray for missionaries, adults and children, who tell others about Jesus. Listen and Guess Who Sit in a group on the floor. Practice saying the Bible truth or the Bible verse for the day. Choose one kindergartner to stand with his back to the group and toss a beanbag over his shoulder. The child who catches the beanbag will conceal the beanbag and say the Bible truth or Bible verse. The child who tossed the beanbag will turn and point to the one he thinks said it. If kindergartners are new to the group, this will be a good time to say and learn names. Whoever has the beanbag takes the next turn. Make a Bible Scroll Tape a long sheet of paper to the wall and roll each edge one turn to make a scroll. Tape the rolled edges to hold the shape. Cut construction paper rectangles on which you print brief descriptions of things found in the Bible. Invite children to decorate the rectangles and then tape them to the scroll. Begin with these descriptions and add others: - important book - true stories - God s love - Jesus teaches - how to live - Baby Jesus - the twelve disciples Sing About God s Word To the tune Mary Had a Little Lamb, sing and point as indicated: (1) I read the Bible with my eyes, (point to eyes) With my eyes, with my eyes. I read the Bible with my eyes. The Bible is God s Word. (2) I hear the Bible with my ears, (point to ears)... (3) I hold the Bible with my hands, (point to hands)... (4) I know the Bible more and more, (point to head)... ETC-2 Bible Teaching for Kids Kindergarten Leader Guide 2012 LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. 11 1 Snack Encourage boys and girls to wash their hands thoroughly. Say a thank-you prayer for the food. Comment that today s Bible story is about a Bible scroll, and tell children they will learn more about the scroll later. As they eat, roll a sheet of paper into a scroll for each child. 2 Move to Group Time Hand each child a scroll as she moves to group time. The children can wave the scrolls to the rhythm as they sing. 3 Sing Together Sing to the tune Mary Had a Little Lamb : (1) Josiah s workers found a scroll, found a scroll, found a scroll. Josiah s workers found a scroll. It was a Bible scroll. (2) The words told how to obey God, obey God, obey God. The words told how to obey God. The king said, We will obey. 4 Talk About the Children can hold their scrolls above their heads and wave them when they hear the words Bible scroll as you tell the Bible story. Josiah was 8 years old when he became king. He loved God. The kings who lived before Josiah did not love God. They had let the temple become dirty, and it needed repairs. When he became a man, King Josiah sent his helper Shaphan (SHAY fan) with a message for the priest, Hilkiah (hil KIGH uh): People brought money to the temple. Give it to builders and carpenters who can clean and repair the temple. In the temple, Hilkiah, the priest, found a Bible scroll that had been lost for a long time. He gave it to Shaphan, who took the scroll to King Josiah. Shaphan read some of the Bible scroll to the king. When King Josiah heard the words from the Bible scroll, he was sad and upset. We have not been doing these things, Josiah said. We have not been obeying God. Josiah gathered the people at the temple and read the scroll to them. He said, I will do what the words of the Bible scroll say to do. I will obey God. All of the people promised they would obey God, too. 5 Say a Bible Verse Say the Bible verse All that the Bible says is from God (2 Timothy 3:16). Ask: How much of the Bible is from God? (all) Where do the Bible words come from? (God) Week of September 2, 2012 P e o p l e Found a L o s t Bible Scroll 2 Kings 22:1-20; 23:1-3 Bible Truth: The Bible is an important and true book. Life Application: I can learn that the Bible is an important book because it is from God. Bible Verse: All that the Bible says is from God. 2 Timothy 3:16 Looking for something r your second hour? fo different Check out Worship KidStyle at Fall 2012 ETC-3

6 Pray Pray, thanking God for giving us His words in the Bible. 7 Play in Bible-Learning Activities Allow children to choose among the following activities. As you go around the classroom observing and helping, mention that the Bible is important, tells us what God wants us to do, and teaches us about God. A Make picture scrolls. Distribute paper on which children may draw pictures. Print on each scroll the Bible verse All that the Bible says is from God (2 Timothy 3:16). Show boys and girls how to roll their completed pictures to make scrolls. Tie each scroll with string, ribbon, or yarn. Suggest that kindergartners give away their scrolls to friends or family members. B Read a book. Spread books on the floor, including a Bible. Ask children to choose a book to read or pretend to read to another child. They may ask a teacher to read to them. Ask which book in the set is the most important book; talk about why it is the most important. (The Bible is from God; it is true.) C Take a before-and-after temple tour. Take children on an imaginary tour of the broken-down temple. Walk around the room pointing out imaginary dirt, crumbling walls, falling ceiling parts, and cracking floors. Invite the children to pretend to repair and clean the temple. When they finish, turn and walk back around, noting how everything has been cleaned and repaired. Ask how they can help take care of their church. Comment on how carefully you treat and store the Bible in your classroom. D Play Find the Bible. On a tiny piece of paper, print Holy Bible; tape the paper on a block. Challenge boys and girls to build a temple with blocks. They can then take turns removing one block at a time, trying not to cause the temple to fall apart. When they find the block with the paper, lead them to say: Oh look, there s the lost Bible scroll. Remind them of the story of King Josiah. Repeat several times. 8 Clean Up Tell the children they are now workers cleaning the temple. Instruct them to return the blocks and books to the shelves, put away yarn and paper, and throw trash in the garbage. 9 Play a Pantomime Game Children can take turns playing out the following church repair actions as other boys and girls guess what they are doing: hammer a nail, wash the table, mop the floor, paint the wall, use a screwdriver, sweep the floor, toss lumber scraps into a wheelbarrow and haul it away, place a door in a doorway. Add other situations you or the children may think of. 10 Dismiss As you wait for parents to arrive, encourage the kindergartners to gather their work. Give each one this week s Kindergarten Connection page. Thank each child for his help in cleaning the temple.
