1 The Church Bell Issue 8 April 6, 2015 After years of planning and discussion, renovation work on the church building is finally underway. Early Monday morning, members of the church staff began packing up the Bibles and Hymnals while outside crews came in to start moving the pews, the piano and the organ. The current Sanctuary held its first services back in 1967 and has undergone few changes since. T he alleluias of Easter are still in the air even though Holy Week and Easter Sunday are now behind us. Over the course of a week there were 14 worship services here at 1st UMC, ending with the celebrations on Easter Sunday, when more than eleven hundred people came out to hear the good news that Christ has risen! Over the next few months there will be many changes to where you worship, where you have Sunday School, where organizations meet and much more. Inside these pages you will find answers to the following questions to help you better understand the timeline for renovations and how they will impact you. here do I worship? W page 2 here will Sunday School classes W meet? page3 here should I park during W renovations? page 4 here do groups meet? W page 4 hat is the renovation schedule? W page 2 here will the clergy offices be? W page 4 ONLINE ALL THE TIME!

2 Renovation Schedule Whether in a home or in a church, renovation projects require a few changes in the way we do things, and that will certainly be the case here at 1st UMC over the next few months. Above you will find a color coded chart and floor plan that will help you understand the timeline of the renovations to different parts of the church. The colored lines on the chart correspond with the areas of the building undergoing renovations. We will keep you updated on the renovations here in The Church Bell as well as online at (under the Renovation News section on the home page). The Landing: A recovery youth program Wednesday Nights beginning at 7:00 pm (part of Celebrate Recovery at Maryville) THE CHURCH BELL Where do I worship? Renovation on the Sanctuary is already underway. As a result, there will be no worship services or activities there for several months. Below is a look at where worship services will be during this time. (*These are all subject to change as renovations continue) Sunday 8:15 and 10:30 am Traditional Worship Services Asbury Hall (Lower Level) 10:30 am Contemporary Worship Services Wesley Hall (Upper Level) Wednesday 7:00 pm Celebrate Recovery Asbury Hall (Lower Level) Page 2

3 W ith more than twenty Sunday School classes meeting each week, many of you are wondering: here will my Sunday School class meet as the renovation work begins? The chart below should give you an idea of what s happening over the next few months. Beginning April 19th, the Christian Trendestters class moves to the Choir Room, the Bible Survey class starts meeting in the Library, and the Disciples class moves downstairs to room 128. These first moves are due to the start of work on the middle hallway upstairs. (This chart will also be available in Sunday School classes.) Sunday School Sampler Starting May 24th Beginning May 24th and going through mid-july, ALL ADULT CLASSES will be meeting together in Asbury Hall during the 9:15 am Sunday School hour. This sampler is a great opportunity to see folks you don t normally see because they attend a different worship service or have their Sunday School class on a different floor! It also provides YOU with a way to hear different lessons and enjoy different styles of Sunday School. Janet Harville, the Sunday School Superintendent, is working on a schedule of teachers for this special time. Each class/teacher will have an opportunity to lead/teach the adults. Whatever literature and whatever style teaching the class is used to, is what will be shared that day. Children s Sunday School Temporary moves start May 24th Lean on Me Benefit Concert Sunday, April pm New Providence Presbyterian Church Featuring performances by: Maryville College s Off Kilter, Lads and Lassies Special guest emcee: WIVK s Gunner The entire Children s area will be undergoing renovations beginning in late May. Beginning on May 24th and going through mid-july, the Elementary and Youth classes will be divided among the youth room (152 ) and Heritage Classroom (153) across from Asbury Hall downstairs (area pictured above). The rooms will be divided with a sign on the door letting you know which end your child/youth should enter. The Nursery and Toddler classes will be in the Inspirations Class (room 151). THE CHURCH BELL Page 3

4 Where will the clergy be? During the month of April, if you need to see one of the clergy, it will probably be best to call him/her first! Catherine will have a corner of the Library (room 205), Sarah will have a corner of the Shields Class (room 204) and Parker will be in room 147 downstairs. The pastors office phones will be in those rooms, but the pastors may not be there when you call or drop by. You can always leave a message on their office phones or call them on their cell phones. Rev. Catherine Nance Rev. Parker Benson Rev. Sarah Slack Mission buckets for Zimbabwe This annual hands-on mission project is coming up soon. This year, because of the renovations, all items are asked to be kept at home until May 22nd. The buckets will be filled on the morning of Saturday, May 30th from 9:00 am until Noon. Needed items: 1 bag sugar (4-5 lb.) 1 bag self-rising flour (4-5 lbs.) 1 bag rice (2 lb.) 1 bag dried beans (2 lb.) 1 powdered milk (10 oz. or less) 1 box old-fashioned oats (18 oz. or less) 1 bottle cooking oil (48 oz. or less) 1 box Splenda/sucralose (50 ct. or less) Canned Ham (one 2-lb size or two 1-lb size) Please contact Jewel Rankin at or Kristi Crandall at for more information. THE CHURCH BELL Page 4 Where should I park? While most of the parking spots will remain available during the renovation work, their relevance to worship and meeting spaces will change. If you are physically able, please park farther away from the building. Reserve the spots near the door for people who are going to have to walk farther to get to an elevator once they are inside the building. Parking is almost always available across the street at Maryville Junior High School. For the time the 8:15 and 10:30 am Traditional services are being held in Asbury Hall, you may also consider dropping off people who are less mobile at the covered walkway on the lower level on the right side of the building as you come off Montvale Station Road. Where does my group meet? Scouts Meeting in the same rooms until the end of the school year. Scouts will not meet during the summer. Tuesday Morning Bible Study & Men s Thursday Morning Bible Study Meeting in the Garst Classroom (254). Knit Together Ministry Meeting in the Library (205) Adult & Youth Choir Practice, Handbells No changes in rooms Children s Choirs Parents, please walk your children in and do not just drop them off. 5 A week of prayer, reflection and celebration! It started with children walking down the aisles waving palm branches on March 29th and ended with more than eleven hundred people gathering on Easter Sunday to hear the good news that Christ has risen! This year, there were 14 worship services during Holy Week including the three services on Palm Sunday and four services on Easter. In between, dozens of people turned out for noon hour services which featured a different speaker and special music each day as well as some spectacular soups and sandwiches after worship. Thursday night, more than 150 people gathered for Maundy Thursday, a time to remember Jesus command for us to love one another. There was a symbolic hand washing as well as time to remember the Last Supper. Friday night around a hundred people came together to hear the story of Christ s crucifixion and leave waiting for the joy of Easter morning. 1st News Lessons from Latvia Sunday, April 9:30 am Asbury Hall The pastor of our sister church in Latvia will be our guest this Sunday.
