The church has gone from once dominating the religious and cultural landscape of western societies to fading from its landscape. Many are asking, what happened? I suggest that part of what happened is we forgot something. We can look at the early church to see why it grew in the first place. In the 12th chapter of John there is the familiar verse where Jesus says, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself. How did the early Church lift up Jesus? In his book The Rise of Christianity, sociologist Rodney Stark observed this about the early church: "Christianity served as a revitalization movement that arose in response to the misery, chaos, fear, and brutality of life in the Greco-Roman world. Christianity revitalized life in the Greco-Roman world by providing new norms and new kinds of social relationships able to cope with many urgent problems. what they brought was not simply a movement, but a new culture capable of making life more tolerable." In the spirit if Sankofa, we might consider these observations and look back to revitalizing a model of being a response to the misery, chaos, fear, and brutality of life in the modern world. We might look back to that model of providing new norms and new kinds of social relationships able to cope with many urgent problems. We might look towards creating a new culture capable of making life more tolerable." The collective call of the church has always been to to proclaim good news, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to those who are oppressed and set free those who are bound. Christ still has a message for the world. Our mission has not changed. When we are honest about the world we are in, we will then be able to live and proclaim Christ such a way that Jesus again draws all people unto himself. Your Brother In Christ Pastor Phil

If you will be able to help us, please contact Yvonne O'Brien at jyob@aol.com. On June 18, we held a special congregational meeting and approved the proposed changes to the constitution and by laws. Thank you to all who stayed after worship and participated in this meeting. For those of you who have not been in church lately and haven't heard our new (new in February) organist, Alex Gilson, you are missing something special! Alex truly enhances our worship with his extraordinary talents! Come to church and hear Alex! God is good! Marsha Kiriazides Moderator's Report July 2017 Thank you to our Common Life team for its hard work and a wonderful church picnic! We enjoyed good food and good fellowship. It was nice to be in New Fellowship Hall where it wasn't quite as hot. The Coordinating Council met on June 15. We finished the work on the proposed changes to the constitution and by laws (with the exception of section 13, the Pastoral Relations Team). Thank you, Sarah Kohlenberg, for your dedicated work and for guiding us through this process. We also received an update from our Search committee. They are meeting twice weekly and have been video conferencing with prospective candidates. We are hoping to participate in Penfield's 4th of July celebration. During the parade on July 1 at 10:00 am, we will offer Popsicles and Financially Speaking I will be sending statements in July for the first six months of the year. Please review them carefully for accuracy. Also, do not forget to meet your financial commitments to our church over the summer months, expenses know no season! With children not receiving meals at school, they often come to Cameron, increasing our daily numbers significantly. We are looking for adults 18 and older to volunteer in our Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry. We need help prepping and cooking meals to serve in our daily hot lunch program as well as fulfilling food pantry orders for families in need. Soup Kitchen Mon-Sat 9:30am-2pm (various shifts) Cook meals Serve meals Clean up 3

4 The Carillon First Baptist Church of Penfield July 2017 Revised Constitution The Constitutional revisions were approved on June 18th. If you are not a member and wish to vote at Congregational meetings you will need to contact Bill Werther, Financial Secretary and receive envelopes to show that you have given during the past year. Do not wait until time to cast a vote. Do it now. All Teams and Committees should review the new Constitution since several responsibilities have changed and several have been described in more detail. The Constitution will soon be on the web page. Hard copies are available if you do not have access to the web and wish a copy. Dr. Lee B. Spitzer, General Secretary of American Baptist Churches USA General Secretary Lee Spitzer shared a pastoral letter on Friday, June 16. At the close of his letter, he noted five challenges which he believes will help American Baptists to hold fast to their Baptist convictions while also contributing to a more harmonious American civic life: 1. Commit to listen more graciously and with an open mind, especially when we are in conversation with people who hold different views than we do. 2. Reject anger, rudeness, hatred, arrogance, and egotism in our dealings with others. Being prophetic is not compatible with being obsessive, abusive or insensitive. 3. Do not forget that people we disagree with are still human beings, and desire respect, grace and acceptance. The Golden Rule still applies to human relationships. 4. Be patient before responding to situations and people; oftentimes, first reports of an event do not convey the whole truth. Kneejerk reactions are seldom helpful. 5. Do not assume that one's own position on an issue is the only Christian response to 6

7 July 2017 First Baptist Church of Penfield The Carillon which all others must subscribe. We know only "in part," as Paul says. Spitzer concluded the letter with a call to action: As American Baptists, may we, through our words and actions, "let our light shine before others, so that they may see our good deeds" (Matthew 5:16) and be drawn to Jesus Christ, our Lord! Seven ABC Priorities Highlighted This summer at the 2017 Biennial Mission Summit, June 30-July 2, at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Ore., the Mission Summit Conversations will showcase seven dedicated rooms for the seven denominational priorities: Anti-Violence, Discipleship, Ending Poverty, Gospel in a Rapidly Changing Society, Innovative Models of Pastoral Ministry, Next Generation of Leaders and Women in Ministry. Leading up to the Biennial Mission Summit, American Baptists are invited join Facebook Groups dedicated to the seven priorities to engage in discussion both before, and after, the Biennial Mission Summit. 7
