Celebrating Community At All Saints Catholic School Volume 5, Issue 16 December 10, 2018 Wednesday is Spirit Day; Student Credit Union is Friday Week of Joy Returns All Saints is busy preparing for Jesus arrival by celebrating several Advent traditions. Come to Nativity Night Don t forget to join the All Saints community in celebrating Nativity Night from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today! The evening will begin with a Las Posadas-style procession, commemorating the journey of Mary and Joseph leading up to Jesus birth. After the procession, attendees can enjoy hot cocoa, cookies, crafts, story time, and the viewing of families Nativity sets. As with last year s event, students are invited to dress as angels and shepherds as part of the procession. We ask each family to bring a dozen cookies to share during the event so everyone can enjoy treats with hot cocoa. We also encourage families to share their own Nativity sets by displaying them that evening. There is no cost to families to attend this event, but please RSVP we can anticipate the number of guests at Open House Yard Signs Available Soon The All Saints Open House for New Families is happening on Sunday, Jan. 27. To help promote the event, current families and friends of All Saints are encouraged to display yard signs on their lawns. The signs will be available after Christmas break. One of the most popular is the annual Week of Joy, which runs from Dec Student Council has taken the lead this year on developing the Spirit Day themes for the week: Monday, Dec. 17 Tuesday, Dec. 18 Wednesday, Dec. 19 Thursday, Dec. 20 Friday, Dec. 21 Advent Pink and Purple Day (with PE bottoms) Christmas socks and ties Christmas sweaters with Holiday headwear Red and White Day with Santa hats (with PE bottoms) Pajamas December Virtue: Purity Purity is keeping your soul free of sin. In the junior high during the month of November, students were given courtesy tickets for various virtuous acts they performed for classmates, teachers, and the greater All Saints Catholic School community. This was a tactile way of reinforcing courtesy in our daily lives, and the students clearly enjoyed it! Congratulations to the courtesy ticket drawing winners: Emma Brewis, Sam Bauer, Mackenzie Zapinski, Isabelle Barone, and Emilee Theofanopoulos. Please see the entire Virtues in Practice newsletter at the end of this document. 3 Classroom Happenings While learning about mountains and volcanoes this week, Mrs. Detweiler s 4th graders experimented with baking soda and vinegar to model a volcanic eruption. Their excitement bubbled over while recreating this process using common household ingredients. The 4th graders were busy this week carrying out secret good-deed missions among family members and friends. In Mr. Arnould s religion classes, students created Secret Service of Love (SSL) cards, also known as calling cards of kindness. The goal is for kids to perform a good deed without seeking attention for themselves. In their Advent Journals, students listed tasks they can do to help others. So if you found an SSL card, perhaps someone you know completed their secret mission! St. Nicholas Visits All Saints All Saints students celebrated St. Nicholas Day on Dec. 6 with a special visitor! In anticipation of St. Nicholas arrival, the kids placed a shoe in the hallway with the hope of receiving a treat. He did not disappoint! St. Nicholas spent extra time visiting first-hall students, who knew he was a priest and bishop whose wealthy parents died when he was young and left him an inheritance. He had great love in his heart and anonymously shared his good fortune by gifting people with things they needed. Students were encouraged to model St. Nicholas through kindness and charity toward others. Growing Leaders in Mind, Body, and Spirit Warren Road Canton, MI (734) Office (734) Attendance

Parents In Prayer All parents, grandparents, and friends of All Saints Catholic School are welcomed to join together for a time of prayer. We meet on the second and fourth Fridays of the month from 8:10 a.m. to 8:40 a.m. in the school chapel. Our time will include praying for our students, parents/families, staff and school community. We will use various forms of prayer throughout the year, but we will always conclude by praying the rosary. Young children are welcomed and encouraged to join us. If you are unable to join us but would like to send in your prayer intentions, them to our campus minister, Mary Ann Jenkins at mjenkins@allsaintscs.com. Parents in Prayer Schedule December 14 January 11 & 25 February 8 March 8 & 22 April 12 May 10 & 24 Cub Scouts collect toys for children Cub Scout Pack 760 has a Toys for Tots drop-off site at All Saints. Boxes are conveniently located in the school s front and back lobbies for donations of new, unwrapped toys. Cub Scouts will be collecting toys through Wednesday, Dec. 19. Thank you in advance for helping to make Christmas a little happier for local children! K-2, Band Concert entertains families, friends The sounds of the holiday season filled the gym last week at the K-2 and Band Christmas Concert. The students worked hard for many weeks under the direction of Mr. Ryan to prepare for the performance. Family members and friends enjoyed hearing traditional Christmas tunes, as well as more recent songs like Snow Pants and Penguins, ATTENTION! which have become instant classics. Kindergarteners experience Australia via a virtual tour Kindergarten classes recently received a virtual trip to The Land Down-Under, courtesy of Mrs. Shore. She highlighted areas in Australia such as Tasmania and The Outback, along with animals and vegetation found there. Kindergarteners quickly identified the landmark Sydney Opera House, which they had made from construction paper as part of an art project. Other highlights included a discussion about the Great Barrier Reef. The students enthusiastically recognized the Australian coast as the setting for the movie Finding Nemo.

Virtues in Practice Monthly Newsletter December 2018 If a bag of sugar says pure sugar we know we will find nothing but sugar inside. When we speak of pure water, we expect the water to be free from chemicals, dirt, and disease. In the same way, God calls us to have pure hearts, hearts that are totally for God and for love; hearts that are free from sin and selfishness. To have pure hearts, we must set our hearts totally on God and not let them become contaminated by the impurity of sin. Sometimes this means being counter-cultural in our choices of movies, music, and dress, because we do not want to allow anything sinful to enter our minds and hearts [...]. Someone who is confident in God s love does not need to do what is wrong in order to seek the approval of others. Be confident! Never lower your standards, but surround yourself with friends who seek purity, and glorify God in all you say and do. ( Virtues in Practice, 2013) December s Virtue - Purity Purity and Sacred Scripture Don t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity. Pre-K-2nd Grade 1 Timothy 4:12 Prayer: Act of Charity /Come Holy Spirit, open our minds and our hearts to God s living Word! What is Purity? Keeping your soul free of sin. Saint: Saint Dominic Savio (Feast Day: March 9) Question to ponder: What is purity? Who is St. Dominic Savio?

3rd Grade - 5th Grade Prayer: Act of Charity /Come Holy Spirit, open our minds and our hearts to God s living Word! What is Purity? Keeping your soul free of sin. Saint: Saint Agnes (Feast Day: January 21) Questions to ponder: Who is Saint Agnes? What should you do to grow further in purity this school year? 6th Grade-8th Grade Prayer: Act of Charity /Come Holy Spirit, open our minds and our hearts to God s living Word! What is Purity? Keeping your soul free of sin. Saint: Saint Maria Goretti (Feast Day: July 6) Questions to ponder: What are some of the virtues in St. Maria Goretti s life that supported growth in purity? Why is it hard to be pure in today s culture? How can we protect purity? Home Project Suggestions For details on these and other suggestions, see the Virtues in Practice Parent Guide for the Year of Charity and the month of December. ( ASCS: Virtues in Practice ) All : Hang up a copy of the Act of Charity on the refrigerator. Pray the Act of Charity together as a family. (See below for a large-print copy.) Pre K-2nd Grade :Practice ways to end a fight before it starts; Discuss telling v. tattling: Tattling is when you are trying to get someone in trouble, but telling is when you know someone is in trouble (doing something that is bad for them) and you are trying to get them out of sin. 3rd-5th Grade : Discuss the effects of music on our emotions. Listen to songs that make you happy, and sad songs that ease your sadness, sad songs that make you more depressed, and excerpts of songs that make you feel angry or cruel. Can the kind of music we listen to affect our relationship with God? What kinds of music are good for us? 6th-8th Grade : Discuss how mena and women are portrayed on commercials, in magazines, in music, in video games. Is it beautiful, or base? Is it realistic? How can you avoid what isn t good for your soul? How can you change the current culture?; Work with a friend to make a list of 5-10 ways you can protect your purity of heart and body during your teenage years. Don t forget to include some spiritual helps such as prayer and devotion to Mary. Ask Our Lord or Our Lady to show you which practices you should adopt.

Purity is keeping your soul free of sin. Virtuous Classroom Happenings! In the junior high during the month of November, students were given courtesy tickets for various virtuous acts they performed for classmates, teachers, and the greater All Saints Catholic School community. This was a tactile way of reinforcing courtesy in our daily lives and the students clearly enjoyed it tremendously! Congratulations to the courtesy ticket drawing winners: Emma Brewis, Sam Bauer, Mackenzie Zapinski, Isabelle Barone, Emilee Theofanopoulos. Everyone: Continue spreading courtesy to all, especially during this Advent Season! January s Virtue in Practice : Fortitude Virtues Committee: Carie Bellamy, Katrina Finkelstein, Mary Ann Jenkins, Michelle MacLellan, Carol Pisarski, Jessica Railling, Amy Roose, Andrew Willing For more information or for suggestions on monthly classroom activities/home projects please see: Virtues in Practice program website or contact a member of the Virtues Committee. Also, for.pdf versions of ALL Virtues in Practice materials please see the Catholic Identity tab at All Saints website. What is a virtue? A good habit is called a virtue. A bad habit is called a vice. Habits grow by practice. God always gives us the grace to choose and do what is good. If we think about what is right and open our hearts to God, we will make good choices and grow in virtue. Virtues make us free, happy, and holy. (from the Grades 1-2 student book) Please continue praying the Act of Charity with your families. We are all working together to show children that God is first and foremost in our lives. The graces from this prayer are needed to open hearts, to guide leaders, and to beg the healing that only Our Lord can provide. Have a wonderful month!

Act of Charity O my God, I love you above all things, with my whole heart and soul, because You are all good and worthy of all love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of You. I forgive all who have injured me, and ask pardon of all whom I have injured. Amen.
