3 THE CORNER 3 February 24, 2019 PREPARING FOR LENT In a little over a week, Lent will begin. It is the 40 days during which we practice fasting, prayer, and almsgiving to prepare for Easter. It is a time we give something up that distracts us from keeping God first in our lives. This is a great time to challenge yourself and to not only give something up but go beyond that and take stock in the time you spend nourishing your spiritual life. Check out our parishes Facebook pages throughout Lent to learn about books and various events going on in the area that will help with your spiritual growth. Even if you do not have a Facebook page, you can see our Facebook postings on the parish websites. Amen? From Genesis to Jesus These Lenten reflections from Scott Hahn based on A Father Who Keeps His Promises highlight biblical characters such as Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David that lead us to Christ and his sacrifice for us. Delving into the rich history of God s covenant with us, each day s reading gives the reader much to reflect on throughout Lent, culminating with Easter and ending with Divine Mercy Sunday. In addition to the reflection, there is a daily Scripture verse, a prayer, and a relevant question, all designed to deepen the reader s Lenten experience.
6 E ASTSID E FAITH 6 Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. Psalm 34:14 Catholic FAQs What is a vocation? Moral relativism is the view that moral judgments are true or false only relative to some particular standpoint (for instance, that of a culture or a historical period) and that no standpoint is uniquely privileged over all others. Basically, it teaches that what is true for one person may not be what is true for another depending on differences of belief/opinion. Knowing that the falsehood of moral relativism exists in our world, how do we form our conscience to conform to God s will? We use the Word of God handed on in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition as interpreted by the Magisterium as light for our path, and we are assisted by the Holy Spirit. The Catechism reminds us that this is a lifelong task. It begins in childhood with the teaching of virtue. A properly formed conscience prevents or cures fear, selfishness and pride, resentment arising from guilt, and feelings of complacency, born of human weakness and faults. The education of the conscience guarantees freedom and engenders peace of heart (CCC 1784). As St. Augustine says, A good conscience is the place of Christ; the temple of the Holy Ghost; the paradise of delight; the standing Sabbath of the saints. RCIA This Week Please pray for all of those journeying to full Communion with the Catholic Church! This week s (February 27) RCIA lesson is A CATHOLIC MORAL VISION: Virtue, Grace, and the Path to Happiness This session will cover: What leads to true happiness The difference between the modern view of freedom and the biblical view of freedom Virtue and why we need it to live life well The three things that make an act moral Why we can never do evil so that good may result in other words, why the end never justifies the means Sin and how it hinders our pursuit of happiness What we need to have a correctly formed conscience Questions for the week: Do you believe in a right and wrong? How do you tell the difference? What does it mean to be happy? How do you define happiness? How do we know if our choices are morally good? What is a virtue? What are some virtues that come easy to you? Pray your day. Rather than setting aside special time for prayer, pray your day. Pray for the drivers of the vehicles and fellow mass transit passengers with whom you share your commute. Pray as you pass the hospital, police station, and government offices. Lift up the trash collector and the mail carrier. Pray as you write a letter, , or Facebook post to an old friend. Offer sentence prayers throughout the day thanking God for your coworkers. Regional Lenten Mission with Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers Save time for this great opportunity to rejuvenate your faith. Dates and each evening s topic are: Sunday, March 17, 7-8 PM Why Be Catholic? Monday, March 18, 7-8 PM Apologetics 101: Seven Truths of the Church You Must Know to Defend Your Faith Tuesday, March 19, 7-8:30 PM Your Sins are Forgiven: The Sacrament of Reconciliation in the Life of the Church NOTE: Talk from 7-8 PM, Confessions from 8-8:30 PM Wednesday, March 20, 7-8:30 PM Come Let Us Adore Him: The Purpose and Meaning of Eucharistic Adoration NOTE: Talk from 7-8 PM, Exposition & Benediction from 8-8:30 PM Consult not your fears but your hopes and your dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in, but with what is still possible for you to do. Pope John XXIII Stand Firm for Life The 40 Days for Life 2019 Spring Campaign runs March 6 through April 14. The campaign draws attention to the evil of abortion through prayer, fasting, constant vigil and community outreach, All ages are welcome to join in this concert of prayer for protections for and renewed understanding of the beautiful gift of human life, plus hope and healing for those suffering from past decisions or actions. Please go to 40daysforlife.com, click on locations, enter Cincinnati or Dayton, and join us!
7 ST. ANTHONY PARISH 7 Loving Our Neighbor: Black History Month Discussion Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love, A Pastoral Letter Against Racism In November 2018 the Catholic bishops of the United States released a Pastoral Letter Against Racism called, Open Wide Our Hearts. The letter is a powerful invitation for all the people of God to face courageously the vice of racism, reach out generously to the victims of this evil, assist the conversion needed in those who still harbor racism, and begin to change policies and structures that allow racism to persist. The letter has three major sections: Do Justice, Love Goodness, and Walk Humbly with God. This final conversation in our Loving Our Neighbor: Racism series took place today. Stay tuned for further opportunities to discuss this important topic. Palm Burning March 6 is Ash Wednesday, and so we will burn palms on March 3 after the 8:30 Mass. If you have any palms left from previous years, you may bring them to church in the coming weeks. International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. International Women's Day (IWD) has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Prior to this the Socialist Party of America, United Kingdom's Suffragists and Suffragettes, and further groups campaigned for women's equality. Loving Our Neighbor: Opposing antisemitism During March, our conversation on loving our neighbor will focus on our Jewish brothers and sisters, who have faced a long history of hate on the part of Christians. On Sunday, March 17, the Peace & Justice Committee is organizing a field trip to the Holocaust and Humanity Center in its new location at Union Terminal. We will leave directly after the 11:30 Mass so that we are able to spend as much time as possible at the Center before it closes at 3 PM. This trip will give us some sense of the history of antisemitism, particularly as manifested during the Holocaust. On Sunday, March 24, we will be welcoming Jackie Congedo, Director of the Jewish Community Relations Council, who will share how antisemitism continues to beleaguer Jewish communities in the world today. You can sign up for the trip to the Holocaust Center on the sheet on the table in back of church. Carpools will be arranged. Admission to the exhibit is $10. It s not the load that breaks you down, it s the way you carry it. Lena Horne Health Tip February is American Heart Month. Heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death in the United States and the American Heart Association is committed to providing the very latest scientific information and recommendations to prevent and treat heart disease. Lose Weight to reduce the burden on your heart, lungs, blood vessels, and skeleton. 7. Stop Smoking and avoid secondhand or environmental smoke. Additional information and specific resources for controlling these 7 risks for heart disease can be found at: If you are interested in working on your heart health, here is some information about an upcoming event in Cincinnati!
