ALL: Amen First Reading Dt 4:1-2, 6-8 A reading from the book of Deuteronomy Moses said to the people: Now, Israel, take notice of the laws and customs that I teach you today, and observe them, that you may have life and may enter and take possession of the land that the Lord the God of your fathers is giving you. You must add nothing to what I command you, and take nothing from it, but keep the commandments of the Lord your God just as I lay them down for you. Keep them, observe them, and they will demonstrate to the peoples your wisdom and understanding. When they come to know of all these laws they will

2 exclaim, No other people is as wise and prudent as this great nation. And indeed, what great nation is there that has its gods so near as the Lord our God is to us whenever we call to him? And what great nation is there that has laws and customs to match this whole Law that I put before you today? This is the word of the Lord. Responsorial Psalm Ps 14:2-5. R. v.1 (R.) The just will live in the presence of the Lord. 1. Lord, who shall dwell on your 3. He who keeps his pledge, holy mountain? He who walks come what may; who takes no without fault; he who acts with interest on a loan and accepts no justice and speaks the truth from bribes against the innocent. his heart. (R.) Such a man will stand firm for 2. He who does no wrong to his ever. (R.) brother, who casts no slur on his neighbour, who holds the godless in disdain, but honours those who fear the Lord. (R.) Second Reading Jas 1:17-18, 21-22, 27 A reading from the letter of St James It is all that is good, everything that is perfect, which is given us from above; it comes down from the Father of all light; with him there is no such thing as alteration, no shadow of a change. By his own choice he made us his children by the message of the truth so that we should be a sort of first-fruits of all that he had created. Accept and submit to the word which has been planted in you and can save your souls. But you must do what the word tells you, and not just listen to it and deceive yourselves. Pure, unspoilt religion, in the eyes of God our Father is this: coming to the help of orphans and widows when they need it, and keeping oneself uncontaminated by the world. This is the word of the Lord. Gospel Acclamation Jas 1:18 Alleluia, alleluia! The Father gave us birth by his message of truth, that we might be as the first fruits of his creation. Alleluia!

3 Gospel Mk 7:1-8, 14-15, A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered round Jesus, and they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with unclean hands, that is, without washing them. For the Pharisees, and the Jews in general, follow the tradition of the elders and never eat without washing their arms as far as the elbow; and on returning from the market place they never eat without first sprinkling themselves. There are also many other observances which have been handed down to them concerning the washing of cups and pots and bronze dishes. So these Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why do your disciples not respect the tradition of the elders but eat their food with unclean hands? He answered, It was of you hypocrites that Isaiah so rightly prophesied in this passage of scripture: This people honours me only with lip-service, while their hearts are far from me. The worship they offer me is worthless, the doctrines they teach are only human regulations. You put aside the commandment of God to cling to human traditions. He called the people to him again and said, Listen to me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that goes into a man from outside can make him unclean; it is the things that come out of a man that make him unclean. For it is from within, from men s hearts, that evil intentions emerge: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, malice, deceit, indecency, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within and make a man unclean. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Communion Antiphon O Lord, how great is the depth of the kindness which you have shown to those who love you. 4 PARISH CENSUS This weekend and the following weekend we will continue to update our Census the names, addresses, etc, of everyone in the Parish. We have had a fairly good Census over the past few years, but we do need to update it. People move, some pass away, more children are born, sadly some couples split up, children leave school, some change schools. We try to keep this private information up to date for obvious pastoral reasons (the information is guarded carefully). If you did not fill in a Census card last weekend, we ask that you please fill one in this weekend, even those who have been here for years. Please place your completed card in the collection basket or return to the Parish Office. Because some people who are regularly here may be missing this weekend, we will repeat this exercise next week too. Thank you for your co-operation. Fr Kevin * * ORGAN RECITAL * * Dr Lindsay Hutchinson (Organist from Melbourne University) will once again be performing a recital on our unique and wonderful organ. The recital will be THIS SUNDAY 30 th of August 2009, starting at 2pm. The recital will be followed by afternoon tea. Total cost will be $ Please let me know if you ll be attending for catering purposes. Dee Rorke Thank You Robert and Marilyn Dowsett would like to thank the Parishioners of St Macartan s Parish for your prayers for their son, Kable Dowsett, who is still battling cancer. CHILDREN S LITURGY FATHER S DAY MASS 6 SEPTEMBER 2009 Next Sunday 6 September is Father s Day and Children s Liturgy will hold their Father s Day Mass commencing at 9am. Book your dad, granddad and the rest of your family to come along and start Father s Day in a terrific way. The children will be making a special gift for their dad or special person, lots of good reflections to celebrate and give thanks for our dads and of course, a delicious morning tea to follow! Some good dad games will be also organised for our terrific dads after Mass and a couple of nice prizes that will definitely warm the heart... We look forward to seeing you all there. The Children s Liturgy Team FIRST EUCHARIST CHILDREN During the next few months, the children who are making their First Communion this year will be able to collect a white sash from the foyer when they arrive for mass. The children will wear the sash during mass and then return them to the basket in the foyer at the end of mass. We as members of the St Macartan s community will readily identify these participants and we will have the opportunity to speak to, encourage and pray for these children. Our prayers and best wishes go with them all. The Children s Liturgy Team

5 CARE GROUP The Care Group is happy to receive requests for assistance with such things as transport to hospital appointments, help with light housework when sick, etc. Please contact Margaret Wilson on A BONUS FROM HEAVEN! Fr Lou Heriot, one of Melbourne s best known and loved priests, is going to be with us shortly. After many years as PP of South Melbourne, East Bentleigh and the past 15 years at East Brighton, Fr Lou is keen to help us here, soon leaving East Bentleigh. He has been a terrific visitor (often by bike) wherever he has been visiting every house, including those not of our faith, around his Parishes. He is a deeply pastoral man and has great rapport with people. Fr Lou has purchased a house here in Mornington and is keen to help out here in whatever way he can. He is currently in Russia, but will be arriving in Mornington shortly. More details will be available soon but it is really good news. Many people here know him! Sacrificial Giving Pledge : $ per week. Average Jan June 2009 : $ per week or 82% of the pledge Sister Gen Volunteers Needed! Sister Gen has been putting up with knee pain for a long time. She has now finally agreed to have an operation on her knee which is scheduled for 9 th September. She will then have the following 3 weeks or so off until 30 th September at St John of God Rehab. After the 30 th, she intends to resume work but will not be able to drive for some time. To help Sr Gen, we need a lot of people we could call on to drive her to her various tasks. If you might be available to help, please contact the Parish Office on If we have plenty of offers, it will not be a big load for anyone. Thank you. My Overseas News! My brother Les (from Cobram) turns 80 (though he is more like a 40 year old!) on 27 th August. To escape any birthday celebrations he s off to New York. Needless to say, his 5 children are undeterred by his manoeuvre and are going to join him anyway (I m part of the team!). For me, 4 days in New York, 3 in Washington DC, 4 in Omaha, Nabraska and 2 in Los Angeles. I leave Tuesday 25 th August and return on Tuesday 8 th September. Fr Bill Walsh will supply the weekend Masses and Fr Charles McBride weekdays. PRIMARY SCHOOL ENROLMENTS St Macartan s had over 100 applicants for Prep level for We regretfully disappointed quite a few families we would normally accept. Is there anyone out there who could occasionally include him in family activities? If you can help please contact KATE on PRAYER/REFLECTION TRUST IN GOD Lord, I ve no idea where I m going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself. And the fact that I think I m doing your will, doesn t mean that I m actually doing it. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you, and I hope that I have this desire. Though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death, I will not fear, for you are with my, and you will never leave me face my perils along. (Thomas Merton) (Repeated by request) Journey to Turkey 25 April 10 May 2010 This tour will include Istanbul, Kayseri, Cappadocia, Konya, Pamukkale, Izmir, Galipoli and more. The tour will be escorted by Fr Laurie Pearson, Parish Priest of St Thomas More, Mt Eliza. His own experience of being on pilgrimage, especially in Israel, has moved him to want to share that with others. He loves travelling and is convinced that those who take part in an experience such as this cannot help but grow in respect for other peoples and cultures as a result. For further information, please see the posters in both foyers.

The judges at the award ceremony made reference to the design of the facility with learning areas enhancing learning for children, landscaping enabling children to live and play in an environment that supports sustainability and having design features leading the way in 21 st century education. This year s Social Justice Sunday Statement is titled: And You Will Be My Witnesses. During World Youth Day 2008, Australia saw thousands of young Christians inspired by the Holy Spirit. Yet many young people are marginalised, excluded and deprived of dignity. The Bishops recall the challenge of Pope Benedict What will you leave to the next generation? What difference will you make? and present it again to all Australians, young and old. For further details about the Catholic Bishops Statement, visit the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council website ( or call (02)

9 SACRIFICIAL CAMPAIGN 2009 As we recalled recently, James Barrett and Paul Girolami spoke at all Masses about the forthcoming Sacrificial Giving campaign which will take place in October this year. The Thanksgiving Program asks us all to think about our financial contribution to the Parish but also about giving of our time and ourselves. There have been notes in The Word recently about the drop in Sacrificial Giving over the period of this year. Your financial contribution to the parish goes to the day to day running of the parish and the ongoing upkeep of the church building, the parish centre, the parish office and surrounding grounds. Over the last year this has involved the painting of the church, replacing carpet, upgrading the audio visual equipment and security and repairing the floor in the community centre. It is also used to run pastoral programs like High Spirits, the care group, and our wonderful Liturgy Groups (both for the children and the wider parish as a whole). As stated clearly by Father and others, this Sacrificial Giving campaign will be primarily used to fund the day to day running of the parish. STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM During October we will conduct our 2009 Stewardship Program. The program will examine our role as steward of God s gifts of time, talent and treasure, but it will also examine our stewardship of the earth s resources water, oil, forests, land, etc. It will seek a financial commitment for the parish but it will also ask how we use all of our practical and material resources. UPDATE ON THE FUTURE OF ST MACARTAN S CHURCH The President of the Parish Council, Sarah Hansen, recently spoke about long term plans to build a Church on the same campus as St Macartan s Parish School. The present Church building in Drake Street will need to be modified but will continue to be used. The presbytery will stay where it is. The Archbishop has been consulted about the plan and the Parish will be in contact with the Diocesan Building and Advisory Service. As Sarah pointed out, the absolute reason for this plan is to continue to keep the school an integral part of the Parish. If we don t so this, the school will be in great danger of drifting away. We are talking about a plan not just for the next few years, but for the next half century and beyond. Copies of Sarah s speech is available in both foyers. RIVERINA TOURS PARISHIONERS 2 DAY TRIP 5th/6th OCTOBER A two day trip to Yarrwonga (Lakeview Motel) calling at Mulwala Ski Club, Barooga, and stopping at Shepparton cannery on the way home.
