Grade A* - Example 1 (Part A) A4 (a) Belief and Sources of Authority Give two statements from the Apostles Creed that are about God. [2 marks] AO1 Full marks awarded for first line; Father /Almighty. 2 marks awarded (b) Explain briefly what Christians believe about the Communion of Saints. [2 marks] AO1 Full marks were awarded for the first sentence a developed answer. All people baptised into the church (all Christians) / living or dead. 2 marks awarded 2
(c) Explain why saying the Apostles Creed is important to many Christians. [3 marks] AO1 A well developed response showing sound knowledge and understanding. The student is moving into a level 3 by the end of the second sentence. 3 marks awarded (d) Christians must believe everything that is written in the Bible. What do you think? Explain your opinion. [3 marks] AO2 A full response showing two well developed reasons with examples. 3 marks awarded 3
(e) Christians should read the Bible every day. What do you think? Explain your opinion. [3 marks] AO2 A very full answer. Full marks achieved at the end of the second sentence. 3 marks awarded 4
Grade A* - Example 2 (Part A) A1 (a) Places of Worship Explain why some Christians believe that their place of worship should be plain and simple. [3 marks] AO1 A very full response with more than three points made, each with development. Full marks obtained by the end of the second sentence. 3 marks awarded. (b) Describe how believers worship at one place of Christian pilgrimage. [3 marks] AO1 5
This response shows sound knowledge with more than three points made, each with development. Full marks obtained by the end of the second sentence. 3 marks awarded. (c) Celebrating festivals is more important than going on pilgrimage. Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer, showing that you have thought about more than one point of view. Refer to Christian arguments in your answer. [6 marks] AO2 6
This is an excellent and well-argued response. Firstly, each paragraph is coherently argued. Secondly, Christian teaching is an integral part of the argument throughout. Thirdly, there is evidence of reasoned consideration of two points of view which are completely balanced and show informed insights. The student is able to apply knowledge and understanding of both festivals and pilgrimage effectively, employing structure and style to render meaning clear. 6 marks awarded 7
Grade A* Example 3 (Part B) B5 Sacraments of Initiation (a) Explain what is said and done at a ceremony of believers baptism. [6 marks] AO1 This is a full and coherent answer. It is concise but it is well structured with good detailed development of three points - repenting sins / testimony / full immersion. 6 marks awarded. 8
(b) For Christians, believers baptism is more important than infant baptism. Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer showing that you have thought about more than one point of view. [6 marks] AO2 A well argued response with evidence of reasoned consideration of two different points of view. Paragraph one agrees with the statement with two developed reasons whilst paragraph two argues against the statement with two developed reasons. In paragraph three a conclusion is provided - the student has given a personal opinion with good development. A coherent response, showing an ability to apply knowledge and understanding effectively. 6 marks awarded. 9
(c) Describe the Roman Catholic ceremony of Confirmation. Student response [6 marks] AO1 A detailed answer with some development. The student has shown good knowledge of what happens in the Roman Catholic ceremony of Confirmation. However, had the student included the renewal of baptismal promises a level 6 would have been achieved. 5 marks awarded. 10
(d) There is no need for Roman Catholics to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer showing that you have thought about more than one point of view. [6 marks] AO2 Student response 11
There is evidence of reasoned consideration of two different points of view. Two reasons with development of both are given on both sides of the argument but it is the conclusion in paragraph 3 that pushes this response into level 6. 6 marks awarded. B5 Spelling, punctuation and grammar Award up to 4 marks for spelling, punctuation and grammar. High performance Intermediate performance Threshold performance Students spell, punctuate and use the rules of grammar with consistent accuracy and effective control of meaning in the context of the demands of the question. Where required, they use a wide range of specialist terms adeptly and with precision. Students spell, punctuate and use the rules of grammar with considerable accuracy and general control of meaning in the context of the demands of the question. Where required, they use a good range of specialist terms with facility. Students spell, punctuate and use the rules of grammar with reasonable accuracy in the context of the demands of the question. Any errors do not hinder meaning in the response. Where required, they use a limited range of specialist terms appropriately. (4 marks) (2-3 marks) (1 mark) Although there are a few errors of spelling, punctuation and grammar, overall the standard is good. There is also a confident use of specialist terms, e.g. testimony, original sin, chrism, sacraments of initiation. 4 marks awarded. 12
Grade A - Example 1 (Part A) A2 (a) Worship Explain why meditation is important to some Christians. [4 marks] AO1 Sound knowledge and understanding. However, although several points are made, there is insufficient development for Level 4. 3 marks awarded (b) Roman Catholic worship should be less liturgical. Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer, showing that you have thought about more than one point of view. [6 marks] AO2 13
A well argued response. The student has shown evidence of reasoned consideration of two different points of view. Paragraph one argues for the statement, giving two reasons with development. Paragraph two argues against the statement, giving two reasons with very good development of one and slight development of the second. A concise and coherent response. 6 marks awarded 14
Grade A - Example 2 (Part A) A3 (a) Festivals Explain what Christians celebrate on Palm Sunday. [3 marks] AO1 A full answer with sound knowledge and understanding with slight development. 3 marks awarded. (b) Describe what happens at the Good Friday service in a Roman Catholic church. [4 marks] AO2 Elementary knowledge and understanding. Two simple points made about Jesus death and Veneration of the Cross / There is no development - just generalised comments made which are not specific to a Good Friday service. 2 marks awarded. 15
(c) Fasting is the best way to observe the season of Lent. Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer, showing that you have thought about more than one point of view. Refer to Christian arguments in your answer. [6 marks] AO2 A well argued response. There is evidence of reasoned consideration of two different points of view. Although the two points of view are not completely balanced, the response does show informed insights and ability to apply sound knowledge and understanding of religion effectively. There is one very well developed point in paragraph one on one side of the argument and in the second paragraph there are four points made with slight development of two on the other side of the argument. 6 marks awarded 16
Grade A Example 3 (Part B) B5 Sacraments of Initiation (a) Explain what is said and done at a ceremony of believers baptism. [6 marks] AO1 This is a detailed answer with some development rather than a full and coherent answer showing good development. Several points have been made with development of two only just fits into a level 5. Had the student explained the symbolism of the either the white garment, total immersion or the baptismal pool, this student could have achieved a level 6. 6 marks awarded. 17
(b) For Christians, believers baptism is more important than infant baptism. Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer showing that you have thought about more than one point of view. [6 marks] AO2 This response just makes a level 6. This is an example of where two different points of view are considered but the consideration is not balanced. Paragraph one develops very well the point about being an adult like Jesus was / so we are following in his footsteps / more mature / understand and know what we are doing /prepared to live a good Christian life. Paragraph two has three points with slight development of each one. The student is able to apply knowledge and understanding effectively to make this a good response. 6 marks awarded. 18
(c) Describe the Roman Catholic ceremony of Confirmation. Student response [6 marks] AO1 A concise but full answer with almost all areas of the ceremony mentioned. 6 marks awarded. 19
(d) There is no need for Roman Catholics to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer showing that you have thought about more than one point of view. [6 marks] AO2 Student response This is an example of a one sided response. Paragraph one has developed reasons - just enough for level 4. Paragraph two is irrelevant because the question refers to the Roman Catholic ceremony not any other tradition. 4 marks awarded. 20
(4 marks) (2-3 marks) (1 mark) Although there are some errors of spelling, punctuation and grammar, overall the standard is good. There is also a confident use of specialist terms, e.g. Pentecostal, total immersion, catechumens, chrism, baptismal candle. 4 marks awarded. 21
Grade C - Example 1 (Part A) A3 (a) Festivals Explain what Christians celebrate on Palm Sunday. [3 marks] AO1 The only creditable point is the laying of palms. 1 mark awarded. (b) Describe what happens at the Good Friday service in a Roman Catholic church. [4 marks] AO1 Nothing relevant or worthy of credit. 0 marks awarded. 22
(c) Fasting is the best way to observe the season of Lent. Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer, showing that you have thought about more than one point of view. Refer to Christian arguments in your answer. [6 marks] AO1 A level 4 answer. Level 6 would have been achieved, had the answer contained some of the following ideas/development: fasting helps Christians to focus on what is needed for survival rather than on luxuries; self-denail entails getting rid of the extras in life the importance of prayer in bringing a person closer to God works of mercy enables a person to help those in need, e.g. sharing with the poor. 4 marks awarded 23
Grade C - Example 2 (Part A) A4 (a) Belief and Sources of Authority Give two statements from the Apostles Creed that are about God. [2 marks] AO1 A full answer. 2 marks given for line 1. 2 marks awarded. (b) Explain briefly what Christians believe about the Communion of Saints. [4 marks] AO1 Not the best answer but nevertheless two simple points are made - baptised Christians / all Christians. 2 marks awarded. (c) Explain why saying the Apostles Creed is important to many Christians. [3 marks] AO2 Two simple points made reaffirms faith / brings Christian community together. Development of one of the two given needed for level 3. 2 marks awarded 24
(d) Christians must believe everything that is written in the Bible. What do you think? Explain your opinion. [3 marks] AO2 Two simple points made parables far fetched / meaning important today. Development of one of the two given needed for level 3. 2 marks awarded. (e) Christians should read the Bible every day. What do you think? Explain your opinion. [3 marks] AO2 A basic answer. Opinion backed up by a developed point. 2 marks awarded 25
Grade C Example 3 (Part B) B5 Sacraments of Initiation (a) Explain what is said and done at a ceremony of believers baptism. [6 marks] AO1 3 simple points made with development of one. Student has mixed up infant /believers baptism. 3 points awarded. 26
(b) For Christians, believers baptism is more important than infant baptism. Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer showing that you have thought about more than one point of view. [6 marks] AO2 27
A well argued response showing reasoned consideration of two different points of view. 6 marks awarded. (c) Describe the Roman Catholic ceremony of Confirmation. [6 marks] AO1 28
3 simple points made with development of one presentation of candidate / sponsor / laying on of hands with development. Student displays a basic outline of the ceremony. 3 marks awarded (d) There is no need for Roman Catholics to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer showing that you have thought about more than one point of view. [6 marks] AO2 29
Evidence of reasoned consideration of two different points of view but the consideration is not balanced. The student makes a detailed coherent response against the statement but the opposing argument lacks real development. There is also confusion towards the end with the oil. 5 marks awarded. (4 marks) (2-3 marks) (1 mark) There are errors of spelling, punctuation and grammar but overall the standard is fairly good. A good range of specialist terms used, e.g. original sin, catechumens, laying on of hands. 3 marks awarded. 30
