PRAY FOR THOSE IN THE MILITARY Brendan Allf, Brian Arens, Elizabeth Bagot, Justin Biery, Chris Boelscher, Tyler Brady, Jacob Brown, Drew Burk, Joseph Cappel, Michael Denke, Joe Engleman, John Ferrell, Patrick Ferrell, Joshua Huesing, Tate A. Congratulations to Kim and Ron Torres who entered into the Holy Sacrament of Matrimony this past Saturday. Kim and Ron have been civilly married for some years, but had never come before the Altar to have it validated. Like many couples today, they have enjoyed a fruitful marriage, but have not had the ability to enjoy the gift of the Eucharist. With their Sacramental validation, they are now enjoying the fullness of the graces bestowed upon the Church! Congrats Kim and Ron. We wish you many, many more years of wedding joy! 4 20 TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME VERBUM DOMINIE: THE WORD OF THE LORD The Proclamation of the Word of God and the Poor Sacred Scripture manifests God s special love for the poor and the needy. [It is vital for] these, our brothers and sisters, to hear the Gospel message and to experience the closeness of their pastors and communities. Indeed, the poor are the first ones entitled to hear the proclamation of the Gospel; they need not only bread, but also words of life. The diaconia of charity, which must never be lacking in our churches, should always be bound to the proclamation of the Word and the celebration of the sacred mysteries. Yet we also need to recognize and appreciate the fact that the poor are themselves agents of evangelization. In the Bible, the true poor are those who entrust themselves totally to God; in the Gospel Jesus calls them blessed, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. The Lord exalts the simplicity of heart of those who find in God true riches, placing their hope in him, and not in the things of this world. The Church cannot let the poor down: Pastors are called to listen to them, to learn from them, to guide them in their faith and to encourage them to take responsibility for lives (VD 107). MEETINGS FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 16TH Tues. 6:30 pm Boy Scouts Tues. 3:00 pm Cemetery Committee Wed. 7:00 pm SVDP Thurs. 7:00 pm Adoration/Benediction WELCOME NEW PARISHIONERS TO THE PARISH!!! FESTIVAL SIGNS As always, signs for our Festival are available for posting in your yards and other visible locations. Located in the Narthex, please take signs for work, your yard, to put in a relative s yard and so forth. Our advertising is a true need to promote and bring our guests here. Let s pray that our Festival is a resounding success with great weather! CEMETERY Please take a moment to visit our cemetery and pray for our family members and friends who are interred there. Anyone interested in purchasing a grave or graves is invited to contact George Hoffman or our Church Office for further information. PRAYER FOR FAMILIES TO PRAY AS THE SCHOOL YEAR BEGINS As the new school year is beginning, with the family gathered together in an appropriate place in the home, the head of the household leads the family in the following prayer: Let us pray: Blessed are you, Lord God, Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year we implore your mercy; bless the students, teachers and staff of our child s school, that together they may grow in faith, hope and love as they learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Christ Jesus. Expand the horizons of our child s minds, that they may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen their commitment to seek the Trust of your ways; and enliven the faith of our entire family to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever. Amen. SCHOOL BEGINS MONDAY!!! It s hard to believe that this Summer has ended for our children! Classes will begin tomorrow at St Cecilia Catholic Elementary and Middle School with school in session for the entire day. Children should be in uniform and prepared for a great start to the year. As always, the Opening of School Mass the Mass of the Holy Spirit will be held on Friday, the 21 st. Parents, you are invited and encouraged to attend if possible. May this year truly make a difference in the lives of all of our CRUSADERS!!! CONCERNING CELL PHONES A friendly reminder that cell phones and Mass don t mix. Please turn your cell phones off when entering the Church for Mass. Not only is it irreverent to speak on the phone during Mass (yes, this does occur!), but it is also a distraction for the worship of the rest of the congregation when a phone rings. Also, text messaging (this, too, is occurring!) should not be done during Mass as well. Remember - this is your time with the Lord! It is a precious time let s make the most of it CCD REGISTRATION CCD Registration for the school year has begun. Classes will begin on Sunday, August 23 rd. Registration forms and schedule are available on the Parish website If you have questions regarding the program please contact the Church office at

5 ST. CECILIA ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH August 16, 2015 RCIA: INVITING NEW MEMBERS TO OUR PARISH COMMUNITY Did you know that about 80% of all adults coming into the Catholic Church did so because of a personal invitation from a friend, relative or neighbor? Did you know that man who has considered becoming Catholic and says that no one ever asked him to visit or to join our Church? This is an invitation to all of our parishioners to spread the news about our RCIA process. If you know of someone who may be interested in joining the RCIA program, please invite him or her to be part of our Catholic tradition! Our next RCIA class will be starting September 23 rd. Please let our Parish Office know the names and phone numbers of those who you know are interested and have been invited! WHY REGISTER TO BE A MEMBER OF THE PARISH? Often people attend Mass at a Parish for months or sometimes years, but never officially register to become members. These are individuals who are members of the universal Church but should have a local Church home. Registering at St Cecilia s Roman Catholic Church is the expression of your commitment to being part of our Parish community and your investment in it. Being a registered parishioner also makes the process much simpler when it is time for receiving Sacraments, registering for our Parish School or religious education, sponsoring a Sacrament recipient, using our parish facilities and even planning funerals. Parishioners also receive personal communications from the Pastor through letters and our Parish link. If you are a child of parishioners, you should plan to personally join the Parish once you turn 21 or when graduating from college. Registering is simple and easy through filling out a membership form which may be obtained online, from Fr Mario or Fr Harry after Masses, or by visiting our Parish Office. KEENELAND BUS TRIP Keeneland Bus Trip is October 10, 2015, $60.00 per person or $ per couple (payment due upon reservations). 7 ST. CECILIA ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH August 16, 2015 POPE FRANCIS: DIVORCE AND REMARRIAGE CONTRADICTS THE SACRAMENT, BUT CHURCH ALWAYS REACHES OUT Vatican City, Aug 5, 2015 Echoing his predecessors on the need to care for divorced and remarried persons, Pope Francis said Christians should help these persons integrate into the community rather than treating them as though they are excommunicated. The Church well knows that such a situation contradicts the Christian Sacrament, the Pope said in his Aug. 5 General Audience at St. Peter's Square. Nonetheless, he added, the Church should always approach such situations with a mother's heart; a heart which, animated by the Holy Spirit, seeks always the good and the salvation of the person. It is important that they experience the Church as a mother attentive to all, always disposed to listen in encounters. The community is to welcome persons who have divorced and entered into new unions, the Pope said, that they may live and develop their adherence to Christ and the Church with prayer, listening to God's word, frequenting the liturgy, the Christian education of their children, charity, service to the poor, and a commitment to justice and peace. Pope Francis made these remarks in his first General Audience since his summer break, picking up where he left off in his ongoing series of catechesis about the family. Since last autumn, the Roman Pontiff has been centering his Wednesday catechesis on the theme of family as part of the lead-up to the World Day of Families in September, and the Synod on the Family in October. In stressing the complexity of the pastoral care of those who have entered unions without having received an annulment of their marriage, Pope Francis turned to his immediate predecessors, St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI, both of whom had addressed this problem. Pope Francis went on to stress how in recent decades, under the guidance of his predecessors, the Church has come to an increased awareness of the need for fraternal and attentive welcome, in love and in truth of those who have entered a new union following the failure of their marriage. For instance, the Pope cited Benedict XVI who, in a question and answer period during the 2012 World Meeting of Families, acknowledged there were no simple solutions. He also cited St. John Paul II's 1981 apostolic exhortation on the family, Familiaris consortio, calling on pastors to exercise careful discernment of situations (84) in caring for couples who have attempted to remarry without having obtained an annulment giving the example of the difference between someone who caused the separation, and who suffered it. One of the areas of particular concern, the Pope said, pertains to the children affected by such complex family situations, for they are who suffer the most. If we then look at these unions with the eyes of the small children, the Pope said, we see the even more urgency for developing, within our communities, a real welcoming of persons who live in these situations. How can we entrust these parents to do everything to educate their children in the Christian life, to give them the example of convicted and practiced faith, if we keep them at a distance from the life of the community, as if they were excommunicated? These persons are by no means excommunicated, the Roman Pontiff stressed, and they should absolutely not be treated as such: They are always part of the Church. Excommunication is a medicinal penalty, and an excommunicated person cannot have a ministerial participation in worship; celebrate or receive the sacraments; or exercise ecclesiastical offices, ministries, or functions. The divorced who have remarried cannot, however, be admitted to Eucharistic Communion because their state and condition of life objectively contradict that union of love between Christ and the Church which is signified and effected by the Eucharist, St. John Paul II taught in Familiaris consortio. Pope Francis said that in caring for people who are divorced and remarried, Christians should take their example from the Good Shepherd, an image which, he said, summarizes Christ's mission to give his life for his sheep. This attitude is also a model for the Church, who welcomes her sons as a mother who gives her life for them. The Pope stressed that all Christians are called to imitate the Good Shepherd. Christian families can collaborate with Him in taking care of wounded families, accompanying in the community's life of faith. Each must do his part to assume the attitude of the Good Shepherd, who knows every one of His sheep, and excludes no one from His infinite love! This year's Synod on the Family, to be held Oct. 4-25, will be the second and larger of two such gatherings to take place in the course of a year. Like its 2014 precursor, the focus of the 2015 Synod of Bishops will be the family, this time with the theme: The vocation and mission of the family in the Church and the modern world. The 2014 meeting became the subject of widespread media attention, largely owing to proposals by a small number of prelates to rethink the Church's practice regarding the admission to Holy Communion for divorced persons who have remarried without having had their marriage recognized as null.
