UNIT 1, THE PASSION OF CHRIST Lesson 1: The Cost of Discipleship MARK PROFILE Genre: Gospel Author: Mark Passage: Mark 8:27-38 Where Is It: New Testament: Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke Key Characters: Jesus, disciples and the Twelve with emphasis on Peter Main Plot: Jesus questions the disciples about who the people say he is and the cost of following him. THE WORD Mark 8:27-38 ENGAGE THE WORD Lesson Overview: Spiritual Dimension The idea of fully surrendering to Jesus might be difficult for your students to follow. The concept of losing one s life to save it is an abstract one. As we begin the passion story, students need to understand that what Jesus is asking of them, he is about to demonstrate on a level no one could have guessed. The disciples had no concept of a dying and resurrecting Messiah. The Messiah was supposed to be the strong, victorious deliverer for God s people. Jesus redefined for them, and for us, what winning looks like in God s kingdom. There is both cost and reward in following Jesus. Churches today are pretty good at stressing the reward of following Jesus, but we often overlook the cost that may come our way as well. While the cost to follow Jesus is high, choosing to live for oneself will ultimately have the greater price, for our souls were created to come alive only when placed fully into the hands of our Creator. We follow Jesus in his death so that we can also follow Jesus into new life. Biblical Commentary MARK 8:27-30 Here, Jesus and the disciples are in Caesarea Philippi, as far away from Jerusalem as they can go and still actually be in Israel. Jesus asks the disciples who people say he is, and their responses range from a prophet to John the Baptist or Elijah. Interestingly, their responses reveal that, although many might not fully understand who Jesus is, they do believe God sent him and attribute to him high Jewish titles. Jesus presses the disciples further by asking them who they say he is. Peter responds that Wesleyan Snapshot The Way of the Cross If we are not walking in the way of the cross, we are not following him; we are not treading in his steps; but going back from, or at least wide of, him. John Wesley, Sermon 48, Self- Denial, Christian Classics Ethereal Library. 4 Copyright 2019 by The Foundry Publishing. Permission to use for local church ministry.

THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP Jesus is the Messiah. Until this time the disciples have referred to him as teacher (Mark 4:38). Jesus s response to Peter is interesting. He doesn t directly tell him he is correct, but he does instruct them to not tell anyone. Why? The expectation of a Messiah was firmly rooted in the belief that he would be a royal figure from the line of David who would deliver Israel from their enemies. Jesus understands that the general expectations of a Messiah as a conquering war hero are not aligned with the Messiah the Father is calling him to be. MARK 8:31-33 Jesus then goes on to speak plainly to the disciples. But the idea of a suffering Messiah is so far outside of Peter s comprehension that he takes Jesus aside to rebuke him. All of the disciples have been with Jesus and have watched him heal the sick, calm the storm, feed thousands from almost nothing, and forgive sins they believe that anyone who can accomplish all of this must be bound for glory, not suffering. But, the disciples think in human terms while Jesus thinks in divine terms. MARK 8:34-38 THE MAIN IDEA THE COST OF BEING JESUS S DISCIPLE IS TO DIE TO YOURSELF IN ORDER TO COME ALIVE IN CHRIST. Jesus follows up this conversation with a teaching to the crowd. He outlines the cost of discipleship and invites anyone who wishes to follow him to do so. All who wish to follow Jesus must be willing to deny themselves, even to the point of death. Jesus then tells them that, in order to save their lives, they must be willing to lose them. The truth of this passage is that for the abundant true life to emerge, our self-seeking ways must first be put to death. One must go through death to experience any kind of resurrection. Bible Background The phrase take up their cross is intended to give the graphic visualization of a condemned criminal carrying the horizontal wooden beam to their execution site. In a culture that places extremely high value on honor, the shame of the cross is almost worst than death. In his own crucifixion and resurrection, Jesus takes away the shame of humanity, symbolized by the cross, and redeems it as a way to abundant life for us all. MESSIAH Messiah is a Hebrew word, literally meaning the anointed one. In Jesus s time the word was specifically used in reference to the anointed king from the line of David who would politically restore Israel. In Greek, Messiah is translated as Christ. REFLECT ON THESE THEMES: What does the cost of discipleship look like? REFLECT ON YOUR YOUTH: What fears or obstacles might be preventing your students from following Jesus? 5

UNIT 1, THE PASSION OF CHRIST DISCUSSION GUIDE LESSON OUTLINE Main Idea: The cost of being Jesus s disciples is to die to yourself in order to come alive in Christ. Resources: Bibles, YouTube videos of die-hard sports fans, journals, writing utensils Connect to My Experience: Welcome and Prayer Icebreaker Discussion About Following Jesus Connect to the Word: Discuss Mark 8:27-38 Connect to My Life and the World: Real-Life Examples of Self-Giving Closing: Affirmation and Prayer CONNECT TO MY EXPERIENCE Student Goal: Youth will think about how what they are passionate about shapes their identity. WELCOME YOUR GROUP AND OPEN WITH PRAYER. You may consider using this prayer: Lord, by your grace, we have arrived to this point, at the foot of your cross. We see you nailed to the wood, but even more to the pain, to love, to your will to save us. Every drop of your blood that falls is a promise of a new life for each one of us, your sons and daughters, scattered throughout the world. Amen. You can find other prayers like this one here: way-cross-carmelite-saints. BEGIN WITH THE FOLLOWING ICEBREAKER: ASK: How many of you have seen YouTube videos of crazed sports fans? I m thinking of the people who wear full-body paint, storm the field after a win, or yell angrily at the officials when a call doesn t go their way. SAY: Even if we think they look a little foolish, we have to admit that those fanatical fans are dedicated. They go all out to prove their loyalty to their team. Ask students to close their eyes and consider if there is any area of their lives that they re a bit fanatical about something they sacrifice for and dedicate themselves to whether it s sports, their grades, television, friendships, or something else. ASK: How do the things we follow and sacrifice for shape our identity? SAY: It s interesting that, when we follow something, our lives start to become cluttered with stuff that represents that subject. It invades our conversations. Are you for this team or that team? It decorates our parents cars and our bedroom walls. It dictates who we hang out with. It becomes a part of who we are. 6

THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP This week we are talking about what it looks like to follow Jesus. I wonder if following Jesus will invade our lives like some of our other passions do. CONNECT TO THE WORD Student Goal: Youth will begin to understand the significance of the eternal vs. the temporal. READ through Mark 8:27-33 slowly. ASK: In your own words, what do you think Jesus is asking the disciples in this passage? Why do you think Peter gets upset with Jesus when he starts talking about his upcoming death? What concerns does Peter have on his mind? ASK: Have you ever been right but wrong at the same time? This is Peter in a nutshell. The rest of the disciples are in this same situation, too. Peter just happens to be the only one to speak up. Peter is right in calling Jesus the Christ. Jesus is the Messiah the people have been waiting for. But he is wrong about what he thinks the Messiah is there to do. READ: Continue reading slowly through Mark 8: ASK: In your own words, what is Jesus saying to his followers? What do you think Jesus means when he says take up their cross in verse 34? How can you lose your life by trying to save it? How can you save your life by losing it? What is the cost of discipleship? Is it worth it? SAY: Jesus isn t asking all of his followers to literally die for him, although many people have given their lives for Jesus in various ways. Jesus is explaining that following him means you are making an eternal choice about who is in control of your life. If we say we don t need Jesus and try to save our lives by ourselves, we will ultimately lose our lives. But if we turn from following our self-focused mindset, we will be set free to receive eternal life. This is a daily decision! Following Jesus requires a far greater cost than we normally talk about in church, but it is also a far greater reward. Bible Background Scholars believe that Mark was the first Gospel written. It is likely that the authors of both Matthew and Luke relied on Mark as a reference. These three Gospels are often called the Synoptic Gospels because of their similarities. CREATIVE OPTION: JOURNALING SCRIPTURE Throughout this series, consider practicing this way of engaging Scripture each week. Use the handout for this week s lesson as a journal. As you are slowly reading through the passage, ask the students to listen for words or phrases that stick out to them. Instruct students to write those on the handout as they hear them. Then, ask the students to share what they felt God highlighted for them in the passage. Afterward, they can write a prayer to God about what was significant to them. 5 UNIT 1, THE PASSION OF CHRIST THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP Such grace is costly because it calls us to follow, and it is grace because it calls us to follow Jesus Christ. It is costly because it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship. CONNECT TO MY LIFE AND THE WORLD Student Goal: Youth will think about the meaning of self sacrifice. One of the most powerful ways to bring this hard message home for the students is to show them examples of people who have lost their lives and in doing so have truly found their lives. Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, Nelson Mandela, Gandhi, missionaries, martyrs, or saints are great examples that you could use by sharing the ways in which they gave of themselves. Perhaps, though, the best examples you could give your students are stories of people from your local church or community who have sacrificed on behalf of others. Share a story about someone you know who embodies losing their life and in return gaining their life. ASK: In what ways are the sacrifices of these people worth it? How do the stories of these people help bring Jesus s words to life? Do you know anyone who lives a self-sacrificing life of love? Creative Option: Sharing the Story If you have identified a person you know as an example of this verse, invite this individual to share his or her story with the group. If you choose a famous person from history, show a video clip of the person speaking or of someone else speaking about the person. Four Observations 1. Jesus s question, Who do you say I am? is a question directed to each one of us. 2. Getting caught up in only human concerns can hinder God s mission. 3. Following Jesus requires a death to our self-centered mindset and actions. 4. Death leads to life. A Flood of Newness The teen years can be scary. Adolescents stand on the cusp of adulthood and face a flood of newness new feelings, new experiences, new relationships, new responsibilities, new decisions, a whole new stage of life. It s overwhelming, like we re standing at the edge of a cliff, told to jump but unfamiliar with what s below. And we re afraid. Jaquelle Crowe, My 3 Biggest Fears as a Teenager, The Gospel Coalition. ( ). 8

THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP CLOSING Reaffirm the following truths to your students in your own words: 1. Every person must deal with Jesus s question, Who do you say I am? 2. It is very easy for us, along with Peter, to view Jesus s mission through our selfish human lens rather than seeing God s bigger picture. 3. Following Jesus involves dying to our self-centered mindsets daily in order to receive the gift of true life from God. Pray for your students, asking God to show them the beauty and freedom of living no longer for themselves but for God and others. Facilitator Note: Your role as the facilitator of this process is to give each student who wants to share a chance to do so. Trust the Holy Spirit to lead and guide each one. Encourage the students when they share. Listen carefully and draw attention to common themes as you see them develop. 9

MESSAGES TO PARENTS AND STUDENTS For Teens: The following are a couple of text messages, Tweets, or Facebook statuses that you could send out to teens in order to promote the meeting and prepare them for it. Read Mark 8:27-38 before our meeting this week as we kick off our next unit. We will be talking about the cost of following Jesus this week. Bring with you an item that represents something you follow (such as a sports team, a college, or a book series). For Parents: Here are some text messages to get parents and teens talking before your next meeting and a follow-up to equip parents to continue encouraging their teens to engage in living on God s mission. Read Mark 8:27 38 with your teen. Share a time that you were right, but also wrong at the same time (just like Peter in this week s passage). This week we will be talking about the cost of discipleship. Share with your teen a cost you have paid for following Christ Dear Parents, This week we started a new unit called The Passion of Christ. We will be looking at the last days leading up to and including the crucifixion of Jesus. This week we looked at the cost of discipleship as Jesus taught his followers that if they want to follow him, they must take up their cross and follow him. We spent time talking about the sacrifice that sometimes comes with following Jesus. Here are some questions to keep some dialogue going with your teen: Why do you think Jesus told the disciples not to tell people he was the Messiah? Peter knew that Jesus was the Messiah, but he didn t understand what that truly means. He was right, but also wrong. What misconceptions do you have about who Jesus really is? What is something our family might have to sacrifice in order to follow Jesus? Let me know if you have any questions as we continue through this series. Thanks for sharing your teen with us.
