Saint of the Week St. Catherine of Siena April 29 S t. Catherine of Siena was one of the most remarkable women in the Church of the Middle Ages and is one of only a few female Doctors of the Church. Though she began her life as an unlikely messenger of God, her influence eventually spread beyond the Catholic Church into politics. Catherine was the youngest of 25 children. From the age of six she began to have visions and mystical experiences showing that God s hand was upon her. She refused the efforts of her parents to find her a husband, and instead became a member of the Third Order of St. Dominic. Soon followers began to gather around her, attracted by her holiness and penitence. Catherine never learned to write, which was not uncommon for women in her era. She dictated her visions and messages from God to a secretary. At the time she was living, there were two popes who each claimed to be the official one. Catherine traveled to Avignon, in France, to persuade the true pope to return to Rome. Her persuasion proved fruitful and Pope Gregory XI did return to Rome. Because of the Crusades and the divisions in the Church, Catherine spent herself working for unification. In the course of her work, she received the stigmata (the wounds of Christ). When Catherine died she left a huge collection of letters and her best known work, the Dialogues. St. Catherine was said to have converted thousands of people by the sheer force of her personality. Of course her holiness must have been the magnetic force of attraction. It is said that for the last years of her life she lived solely on Holy Communion and never ate food. St. Catherine died on April 29, 1380 when she was only 33 years old. She was canonized in 1451 and declared a Doctor of the Church in We pray to you, dear St. Catherine, to intercede for our Holy Father and for the unity of the Church today. Teach us the value of prayer and how to be faithful to the Will of God. Amen.
