Lee Ann Womack In my final interview with the Commission on Ministry, to determine if I would be approved as a postulant for Holy Orders in the Episcopal Church, they asked me to describe priesthood in one word. In an instant I replied, Dance. I was as surprised by that answer as the Commission, but I knew when I said it that I had struck gold. They liked it. I was approved for seminary. As many of you already know, I like to dance. In fact, when music is playing, it is nearly impossible for me to be still. Dance is active, fun, flowing, energizing, graceful, rhythmic, cooperative, and sometimes exhausting. In her song Dance, quoted above, Lee Ann Womack sings that faith is a dance. Like dance, faith is active, fun, flowing, energizing, graceful, rhythmic, cooperative, and sometimes exhausting. The dance of faith can be as passionate as a Tango, as playful as the Shag, and as structured as a Square Dance. Faith is the move we make to dance with God. Our dance with God is all movement; sometimes a Quick-Step, or a graceful Waltz, or the come-hereand-go-away of the Jitterbug. We don t have to be good to dance with God; we only have to accept the invitation and get out on the floor. God s not so rigid as to freak out if we step on God s toes. And, we need not worry about making fools of ourselves in the dance with God. St. Paul reminds us in his letter to the Corinthians that we are fools for Christ that is, giving ourselves over to Him even when it feels awkward loving at the risk of rejection trying new steps when our ability hasn t yet caught up with our intention. Yes, the dance of faith is a pairing with God, a movement through every step of life at God s gentle leading. And the world is God s dance floor. God would not have us as wallflowers, waiting in our safe little corner until the music of life (Continued on Page 5)

Jody Greenwood Associate Rector for Youth & Outreach The Rev. Napoleón Brito Associate Rector for Hispanic Ministry Monnie Hammett Director of Young Children s Ministry Judy Moore, Editor newsletter@ccnorcross.org Deadline for submissions is the 10th of each month for the following month s issue This monthly feature highlights those who give generously in so many ways to make this church function on myriad levels. To nominate someone for this column, newsletter@ccnorcross.org. Foyer Groups (aka Foyers ) There are a number of ways of sharing our Time and Talent at Christ Church, especially in the area of strengthening relationships. A few weeks ago, Ed and I attended the first meeting of our new Foyer Group we knew one of the participants because we had been in two previous Foyer Groups with her, but had not been in a group with four of the other participants (two couples). We knew one of the couples casually by seeing them at church and meetings; we did not know the other couple. As the seven of us talked before and after dinner, I was struck by what a great way it was to get to know people in a relaxed setting, and how many people we would have never met and become friends with, if we had not been in Foyer Groups at both Christ Church and the previous church we had attended for 20 years. I was aware that the Foyer Groups were not just social gatherings, and a chance to drink good wine (or other beverages) and share excellent food, but there is a history behind the Foyer Groups that many do not know. Most of the information shared here is from the website of St. Stephen s Episcopal Church in Crownsville, Md. ( another source is the website of Coventry Cathedral ( ite/our-reconciliation-ministry/). Information from both sources has been modified and edited for clarity and length. I hope you find this article interesting and will join a Foyer Group next fall when new groups are formed. For more information, please contact Kristie Bernard, who organizes the Foyer Groups, at thecure00@hotmail.com or Mary Ann Fair The English word Foyer is derived from foier, a French term for hearthside or fireside, and projects an image of warmth and comfort. In most cultures, people welcome old friends, family members, and newcomers into their homes by gathering to celebrate special occasions, enjoy times of fellowship, and share moments of camaraderie. 4 Page 4 Richard Weinberg to be Ordained to Diaconate Christ Church Seminarian Richard M. Weinberg will be ordained a transitional deacon on Saturday, Nov. 12, by the Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, D.C. Christ Church Rector Ceci Duke will be among his four presenters at the special service to take place at Washington National Cathedral, which is also Richard's sponsoring parish. Richard says, As this special day approaches, I m so grateful to Christ Church members for their prayers and support. Christ Church has been such a key part of my formation over the past two years, and my ordination to the diaconate will mark a significant step in this journey of discernment, which for me began more than six years ago. Richard is a candidate for ordination to the priesthood in the Diocese of Washington, and is a senior at Candler School of Theology at Emory University. Priests in the Episcopal Church are ordained to the diaconate and serve as deacons for a minimum of six months prior to being ordained priests. Richard will continue to serve at Christ Church until his graduation from Candler next May. Richard s ordination to the priesthood is scheduled for June 17, 2017, also at the National Cathedral. Richard will be back and preaching at Christ Church on Sunday, Nov. 20. He will also tell us about his summer internship in El Salvador (see below). We will celebrate his ordination at a special reception that day, between the 10:30am and 1pm services. Please be there to help us mark this important event in his life Photo: Tracey Rice Richard Weinberg Un Gringo en El Salvador: Learnings and Provocations from Richard s Summer Internship Sunday, Nov. 20, 9:15am in the Parish Hall Seminarian Richard M. 5 November 2016 Page 5 Dream Workshop to Follow Enneagram Workshop On a Saturday morning early in October, twenty-five of us gathered for a workshop on the Enneagram, led by Nan Henson of the Enneagram Institute. Prior to the workshop, participants took an on-line assessment to determine which of the nine personality types, or drives, describes them. The language used to describe the nine points of personality types varies. One model describes the nine points in this way: 1 Perfectionist 2 Giver 3 Performer 4 Romantic 5 Observer 6 Loyal Skeptic 7 Epicure 8 Protector 9 Mediator Our leader, Nan, who led us through the strengths and liabilities of each of the personality types, expressed enthusiasm for follow-up workshops Rector s Reflections: I Hope You Dance for those who want to understand the depth and complexity of this ancient model of human understanding. In addition to thought-provoking discussion, we enjoyed social time with lunch in the sunshine on the Youth Center deck. Several participants have expressed interest in further study. The Enneagram Workshop is the first in a series of three workshops which are sponsored by Retreat at Gum Log, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing opportunities for creativity, contemplation, and spiritual growth. In the next workshop, to be led by Heidi Simmonds, we will explore the function of dreams, and how they inform our spiritual life. The dream workshop will be held on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, from 10am 2pm, in the Youth Center. Ceci + (Continued from Page 1) stops. No, God wants to take us around the whole dance floor, all that life brings, so that we can learn to be nimble and deft as we grow into His ever deepening love. I can think of no better practice floor for these dance lessons than the parish church. It is the place where we dance in circles, or dance in the synchronicity of the Electric Slide. It is the place where we stumble and slip, and revive and recover. The dance of faith in the church is so worth the struggle. So, in Lee Ann Womack s words, And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance. Ceci +

6 Page 6 Photo: Tracey Rice Sharon Pitman The Power of Persistent Prayer When my daughter, Emily, was in first grade, her classmates had birthday parties for the whole class. I got to meet their parents at the parties, including one family who had adopted a child from Russia. Both Emily and Alexei were adopted from foreign orphanages as babies, so they had a lot in common. But one major difference was their health. Emily was an incredibly healthy child. She was probably an example of natural selection. Surviving a Chinese orphanage where 65% of the babies died their first year meant she had to be strong and healthy, and she was. Alexei was not so fortunate. During a bout with strep throat during First Grade, it became apparent there was something seriously wrong with his heart. Everyone became concerned about him. Alexei s classmates made cards for him. We parents went to our churches and asked folks to pray for this critically ill child. Our Daughters of the King prayed for Alexei, and several other church groups prayed for him too. But Alexei kept getting worse and could no longer attend school. More folks were recruited to pray. It seemed like every church around had folks praying for Alexei. Some of you may recall being asked to pray for Alexei 15 years ago. It didn t look like Alexei was going to make it. But we continued to pray for him when things seemed hopeless. We just kept praying anyway. Then a miracle happened. Alexei s parents got a call about a potential heart transplant. Alexei was being given his Last Rites when the helicopter landed at the hospital with his donated heart. After a three-hour surgery, Alexei had a new heart and was on the road to recovery! There s power in persistent prayer! I still get tears in my eyes when I remember Alexei coming to his end-of-the-year class party with his parents. He was a lesson to me about the importance of continuing to pray when things seem hopeless. He was also a reminder about the importance of being an organ donor. What a precious gift to donate an organ to someone who needs it desperately when you aren t going to be living in your physical body anymore. Want to learn more about healing prayer? We have a chapter of OSL (Order of St. Luke) called Healing Hands, meeting at Christ Church the second Tuesday of the month. Everyone is invited to attend. Our healing prayer team is available to pray for you: In the Parlor during Holy Communion, and after announcements, at the 10:30 service In the Parlor from 9-10am on the 2nd Sunday of the month At our meetings in Room 107 of the Education Wing on the second Tuesday of the month Other times and places by request Contact me if you d like to learn more about healing prayer, or if you want us to pray for you. 8 Page 8 Stewardship: Branches of the Vine Bear Fruit A vineyard of red wine. I the LORD do keep it; I will water it every moment: lest any hurt it, I will keep it night and day. (Isaiah 27:2b-3 ) I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. (John 15:5) WE ARE THE BRANCHES. So, if God is the farmer who tends the vines, and Jesus is the vine, and we individuals are the branches that bear fruit, what is the role of Christ Church? One possibility is that all of our churches and places of worship are the Arbors that give support to the vine. They serve as the home of the vine ( guide.com/grape-trellis.html). We each decide which trellis to choose for ourselves, or, indeed, whether to use one at all, as a training system to help us bear fruit as a True Believer. Some arbors are cathedrals, ornate and richly decorated. Some are simple wooden structures in rural areas. Some are purely functional. Like grape arbors, they can range from simple to complex. Grapes are often referred to as the fruit of gods. The most important thing to consider is that we ensure enough exposure to sunlight and air movement so that photosynthesis, the ripening of the fruit, and the control of diseases, can be done effectively. We have chosen Christ Church Episcopal, Norcross, as our Arbor. And we are in the time of year in which we each contemplate the financial contribution we intend to make to keep our Arbor strong. The Fourth Quarter shines the light on Stewardship of Resources and Environment, so that our Arbor will hold us as Branches. We need the church and the church needs us. We need God and God needs us to do His work to bear his Fruit. He invites us to give of our time, talent, and treasure so that we continue to build and strengthen the Arbor that is Christ Church. 10 Page 10 Writings from My Mother s Journals My mother, Clara Davis Adams Ray, lived in Moultrie, Ga., where I grew up. For many years she had a meeting/conversation with the Lord every morning. She wrote down her thoughts in small spiral notebooks. We did not know about her practice until after her death, in May 1981, when the many, many notebooks were discovered. She wrote this in Craig Ray [Jr.] Man and His Tongue You can tame the wildest animal, but who can put a bridle on the human tongue? James called the tongue a restless evil. We have often seen people hurt by words. A harsh word can be far worse than a physical blow. Gossip and slander are forms of murder, often done very "politely" and with carefully concealed malice. Lying is a common thing today. It takes place on every level of society, from the diplomatic corps of any nation to the back alley of the city. ~~~ The tongue doesn t need to be evil. God gave us the tongue for blessing. With words we comfort the suffering and we profess our love for each other. Most importantly, with words, we make God known. Only man has the gift of speech. Prize it highly. Let the great Physician see your tongue and cleanse you from its offensiveness. Dear Lord, help Craig (Sr.) and me to use our tongues to serve You by saying things that are pleasing to You. Thank You for this day, Sunday. Aug. 17th Stephen Ministers Host Speaker on Estate Planning On behalf of the Christ Church Stephen Ministers, you are invited to join them on Monday, Nov. 14 at 7pm in the Parish Hall for a seminar presented by James E. Ostenson, Attorney and Counselor at Law. The title of the program is Six Common Estate Planning Mistakes How to Detect and Avoid them Successfully. We will discuss some of the problems that develop when there is inadequate planning for incapacity and death. Attendees will be able to get practical advice and ask questions about topics that are often misunderstood. We will talk about powers of attorney, health care directives, wills, and trusts.

11 November 2016 Page 11 First Annual Blessing of the Costumes Several children (those in costume and some whose costumes were at home), and one adult (with cape and witch s hat), came up front on Sunday, Oct.30 at the 10:30am service for our first annual Blessing of the Costumes! The Rev. Ceci Duke gave a brief presentation on the deeper meaning of the three days of All Hallows Eve, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day, and blessed the costumes and those who would wear them. There were even treats for those who refrained from tricks! Flower Guild Hosted Floral Arranging Demonstration Christ Church Flower Guild hosted a floral arranging demonstration on Saturday, Oct. 15. Mandy Sanderford, certified floral designer, Gwinnett Tech instructor, and Kennicott Brothers Wholesale Florist s representative for Christ Church, amazed the 17 of us with her three creations. Our group included the Flower Guild members and a few newcomers. Following a light lunch, we got down to business, watching and exchanging questions with Mandy as she demonstrated her techniques, responded to our questions, and provided flower care and design advice. She used our floral containers, and the approximate budget we typically work with, to create uniquely contemporary designs for our workshop space and Narthex. The two-hour demonstration passed very quickly as she transformed the contents of an array of stemmed flowers and greens into such lovely arrangements before our very eyes. Here are a few pictures of our session. Mary Haliburton Photos: Bruce Halliburton Photo: Bruce Halliburton

13 November 2016 Page 13 Blessing of the Animals 2016 Photo: Bruce Halliburton On Sunday, Oct. 9, Christ Church held the 5pm second-sunday-of-themonth Celtic service on the front lawn of the church, and, in honor of St. Francis, it included a Blessing of the Animals. The annual blessing is done in commemoration of St. Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan order and patron saint of animals. A crowd of 49 people gathered, and The Rev. Ceci Duke individually blessed 29 dogs, two cats, one rabbit, at least three stuffed dogs, and several photos in their owners cell phones, praying for each animal by name (see photos below). Greta Loeber handed out healthy dog treats she d made for the occasion. In addition to the pet blessings, a guest speaker with her canine assistant, as well as several other puppy raisers and their puppies, visited from Canine Companions for Independence to teach us about their work, and three of our parish s excellent photographers, Bruce Halliburton, Addie Duke, and Jeff Wynia, were on hand to take family pictures with pets, just in time for Christmas Cards. 14 Page 14 Hispanic Community 16th Anniversary Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016 we celebrated our Hispanic Community s 16th anniversary in Christ Episcopal Church in Norcross. It was an unforgettable and Christian deep faith event. The thansgiving Holy Eucharist was a living faith testimony, which was followed by sharing delicious food, folkloric dance with a small group from Panama, games, piñatas outdoors, and latin music with dance in the Parish Hall. More than 180 people joined in fraternity on this amazing occasion for the glory of God. Our hispanic community is growing in quantity and quality, enriching more and more their spiritual life through the Holy Eucharist, the Bible studies, and Prayer Group. The joy and solidarity is our essential manifestation in parish life here in Christ Church Episcopal. We are a real God s family! Fr. Napoleón Brito Iglesia de Cristo Episcopal, Norcross Many of the members of our Hispanic community remember that historic Oct. 12, 2000 when Fr. Isaías Rodríguez (Senior Hispanic Missioner of the Diocese of Atlanta) decided to endow a faith community for the Spanish-speaking people around Christ Church in Norcross. Each Sunday, this community is led by our Associate Rector for Hispanic Ministry, The Rev. Napoléon Brito, and lay leadership. Our Hispanic community meets for worship every Sunday at 1pm, and for Christian formation and fellowship as well. This vibrant ministry of Christ Church continues to grow more and more each year in numbers ( each Sunday, representing the cultures of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Perú, El Salvador, Uruguay, Colombia, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, and other Latin American countries), in programs (ESL English as a Second Language, First Communion, Bible Study, and Confirmation), and in outreach. Events of the past year include the two-day celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe with a Mariachi band in the Nave, and a dinner in the Parish Hall; Baptisms and Confirmations; celebrations of Quinceañera for young women turning 15; and weddings.

16 Page 16 Stewardship TNT Foyer Groups (Continued from Page 2) This time-honored tradition of hospitality has been encouraged in the Anglican Community by the formation of small informal Parish gatherings called Foyer Groups small, close-knit groups of parishioners sharing a common bond of Christian love and concern for one another. History of Foyer Groups When the Germans bombed Coventry, England, during World War II, the Cathedral of St. Michael, built in the 14th century, was completely destroyed. Rather than dwell on the violent loss of this beloved place of worship, the Provost (Dean) of the Cathedral was inspired to found a ministry of reconciliation that he called the Community of the Cross of Nails. While sifting through the rubble of the cathedral, he gathered many of the old nails that were found among the ruins and had them twisted together to form a cross of nails. This cross and the words Father, Forgive, which were inscribed on the wall behind the altar of the ruined building, became the symbol of an International Ministry of Reconciliation. This group of devout followers believe that understanding between peoples, nations, and ideologies can come only when human beings meet and know each other as individuals. They truly live out the maxim Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me. In 1967, the Coventry Cathedral staff began meeting together in small informal groups as a means To bridge the divisions which subtly separate us one from another. The staff members noticed a powerful bond forming among themselves and the group came to be known as the Foyer Group. Two years later, the Foyer movement spread to the congregation of Coventry Cathedral, other parishes in Britain, and in America. Foyer Groups were introduced to the Atlanta Diocese in 1972, after members of the Cathedral of St. Philip went on a pilgrimage to Coventry Cathedral. Foyer groups at Christ Church are believed to have begun in The custom has grown in many churches in the United States as an exciting and meaningful avenue for Christian fellowship, sharing and caring. So, what exactly are Foyer Groups? Foyer Groups are a fun and easy way for seven to nine Christ Church parishioners to gather together on a regular, informal basis to enjoy each others company and deepen (Continued on Page 17)

17 November 2016 Page 17 Stewardship TNT Foyer Groups (Continued from Page 16) friendships. They provide a way to develop friendships with other people who attend our church, but with whom we might not have any other opportunity to meet otherwise. Foyer groups strengthen the bonds of community, and provide a way for our diverse and widespread parish to feel smaller and warmer. There is no agenda or plan just casual fellowship and a refreshing meal. Groups are made up of a cross section of Christ Church singles, couples, young adults, retired folks, etc. Out of the meetings, friendships develop among people who might not interact otherwise. Newcomers are especially invited to join one of the groups. Each small group meets once every four to six weeks in the homes of the members of the group, beginning in October and continuing through May. One person/couple is asked to act as Convener, and usually plans and hosts the first meeting. The host usually provides the main course and beverage, while the other members bring the rest of the meal appetizers, salad, side dishes, bread, dessert. Some groups meet at a park for a picnic lunch or at a local restaurant. The main idea of the gatherings is to simply focus on Christian fellowship, a refreshing meal, and relaxed conversation. The next meeting and host are decided at the end of each dinner. After you sign up, you ll be randomly grouped with seven to nine others, potentially from different circles of the parish community and in varying phases of life. If you have preferences regarding smoking, alcohol, or pets in the home, please let the organizer know. Contact information for your group, as well as a list of suggestions for how to get started, will be ed to you. The Coventry Litany of Reconciliations The Coventry Litany of Reconciliations, which is prayed in the Cathedral every weekday at noon (in the ruins on Fridays), is used throughout the world by the Community of the Cross of Nails. It is also often prayed as the grace before the Foyer meal. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. The hatred which divides nation from nation, race from race, class from class, Father, forgive. The covetous desires of people and nations to possess what is not their own, Father, forgive. The greed which exploits the work of human hands and lays waste the earth, Father, forgive. Our envy of the welfare and happiness of others, Father, forgive. Foyer Groups are not a House Beautiful tour, a Martha Stewart showcase, or an Iron Chef cooking competition. They are casual gatherings where the focus is on fellowship and friendship, conversation and conviviality. We meet each other where we live, and accept our surroundings as they are, just as God does. Our indifference to the plight of the imprisoned, the homeless, the refugee, Father, forgive. The lust which dishonours the bodies of men, women and children, Father, forgive. The pride which leads us to trust in ourselves and not in God, Father, forgive. Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

In order to answer the call of socializing, community fellowship, and outings, Nancy Emery will be organizing trips and activities each quarter. We are pleased to announce our first trip will be to the Hindu Temple in Lilburn BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir on Saturday, Nov. 19, with lunch following (either at the Mandir, or in the Lilburn area). We will meet in the Christ Church parking lot at 10:15am to carpool. On arrival at the Mandir, we are to ask at the security hut for our parking location, and all meet at the Gift and Book Shop. Entry is free (but please bring a vegetarian canned good for their food pantry), and a guided tour can be arranged for groups over 10. This impressive temple is the largest of its kind outside of India. It is situated on landscaped grounds spread over 30 acres. The temple is open daily for worship, and to visitors of any faith. The temple was inaugurated in August 2007 after 17 months of construction time. The tour will begin at 11am. One of the many highlights of the visit is to witness the midday Arti ceremony performed daily at 11:15am. It is an ancient Hindu offering made by waving lighted wicks before the sacred images, to the accompaniment of musical prayer. There are separate seating arrangements for men and women during the Arti ceremony. Those attending the tour need to be aware of the following guidelines: No shorts, skirts, or sleeveless tops are allowed! All clothing must cover shoulders and knees (wraps provided). Please leave all personal belongings/backpacks inside your vehicle. Cell phones must be switched off inside the Mandir. Photography for personal use may be taken from ground level outside the Mandir only. All visitors must remove shoes in the shoe drop-off area. It is recommended to wear socks, as the marble/stone floors are cold. Use handrails to avoid falls! Handicap access is available (ramps and elevator). Facilities are wheelchair accessible Afterward, we can choose to sample food at their café, which has a full menu, or visit several of the cafés and shops in Lilburn, which is a cute little area for anyone who might want to stroll the local shops afterward. The address is 460 Rockbridge Rd. NW in Lilburn The website is Please RSVP to Nancy Emery at naemery@hotmail.com.

21 November 2016 Page 21 Christ Church Thrift Shop s Recent Renovations While the Thrift Shop was closed Sept for restocking, volunteers were busy at work making some much-needed changes. Wall shelving was added, which has really opened up the floor space. A special thank-you goes to parishioners Aurore Murphy and Ed Hurley for all their hard work! Stop by, check out our new store layout, and shop all the great deals! We are now featuring fall and winter inventory. The Thrift Shop is located in the basement of the church office building, across the parking lot from the church building. It is open 10am to 3pm, Tuesday through Saturday. More information can be requested at office@ccnorcross.org. 22 Page 22 Nicholas House is November s Mission of Mercy Nicholas House, the only shelter in Atlanta that helps homeless families regardless of family makeup, with housing and a path to selfsufficiency, will be the recipient of our Mission of Mercy donations in November. The Mission of Mercy collection basket will be placed in front of the altar rail to receive your offering at Communion on Sunday, Nov. 6, You may make your checks out to Christ Church, with Nicholas House on the Memo line. Thank you for your generosity. About Nicholas House Nicholas House assists homeless families in making the transition from homelessness to selfsufficiency in a structured but home-like environment. They are also committed to assisting the families attain three goals that form the basis of self-sufficiency. 1. Earning a Living Wage. 2. Maintaining the Physical, Mental and Social Health of Parents and Children. 3. Maintaining Safe and Stable Housing. Nicholas House understands that providing basic subsistence food and shelter is necessary but not sufficient to prevent most homeless families from becoming homeless again. Success Story Like far too many families, Tamara and her three children became homeless when they fled domestic violence. Tamara knew that she had to make a radical change in her life when her ex-husband pulled her from her car to attack her on a busy street. He had been abusive before, but she had hoped that the order of protection that the court had granted would protect her and her children. With this latest assault, she realized that unless she took extreme measures, her ex-husband could one day kill her and leave her children without a mother. Tamara mustered the courage to leave her hometown, her job, and all of her support systems behind in the hopes of a better life and a new start for her children. Tamara drove her children and her possessions to Georgia, where they bounced between shelters and extended-stay hotels while she searched tirelessly for a long-term solution. Her persistence paid off: after calling Nicholas House, she entered our shelter program. Nicholas House immediately provided her family with a safe place to live. They received much-needed support services that focused on providing them access to multiple resources that would help Tamara safely care for her children and regain employment. With only a short stay, Tamara was able to secure a job and move her family into their own three-bedroom apartment. She credits her time at Nicholas House for teaching her to think ahead and be proactive about planning for the future. Like many parents facing homelessness, Tamara was motivated to get back on her feet. She just needed a little support and Nicholas House was there for her. We congratulate Tamara on her determination to become self-sufficient and rebuild her life. Now, her future looks bright and she hopes that her children will learn from her example.

23 November 2016 Page 23 Rainbow Village 25th Anniversary Grand Celebration The energy at the event was electrifying. On Saturday, Oct. 15, nearly 300 people gathered at the Atlanta Athletic Club for our annual Gala. Making the evening even more spectacular, many Christ Church parishioners were among the crowd. The event was a huge success. Final numbers are still being calculated but we know that more than a quarter of a million dollars was raised. Can I get an Amen? A very special moment occurred when Bishop Keith Whitmore called The Reverend Joel P. Hudson [Christ Church s former rector] to the stage to be honored with a plaque commemorating his stewardship when Rainbow Village was just a fledgling ministry [of Christ Church]. This Gala marked 25 years of success by Rainbow Village in breaking the cycles of homelessness, poverty and domestic violence. It is particularly noteworthy that this year also marks the completion of the Rainbow Village campus in Duluth. By year s end, we will have the capacity to serve 30 families in seven beautiful buildings! Many of you will recall that when Rainbow Village began in 1991, with a single duplex in Norcross serving just TWO families, the dream was modest. The founders hoped to provide a safe place for homeless families as they worked to restore their dignity and get back on their feet. But, as they came to understand the needs of these families, the founders and the staff began to have bigger dreams. Dreams, that led them to add programs that address the underlying causes of homelessness -- the trauma and hopelessness that keep families trapped in intergenerational poverty. The evening was a celebration of the new lives of more than 300 families who have been liberated from that hopelessness. And, we looked forward with anticipation to hundreds more families Rainbow Village will serve in the future! The guests enjoyed a seated dinner, wine, raffle, silent and live auctions, and dancing to the live band "Party on the Radio." Clearly, it was the highlight of the social calendar for many. Think about joining us next October!

24 Page 24 CCE s Response to Hurricane Matthew in Haiti Photo: Courtesy of Frantz Codio Our clinic s lead doctor, Frantz Codio, was able to buy some rice and beans before the full force of the storm hit Léogâne and Gressier. Photo: News Reports Photo: Courtesy of Terry Franzén Terry Franzén (in blue dress) in Jasmin, Haiti, distributing direct aid from Christ Church on Oct. 27, 2016 Hurricane Matthew dealt a crippling blow to Haiti on Oct. 5, 2016, a country still trying to recover from the devastation wrought by the magnitude 7.0 earthquake in January Our partner parish and school, St. Joseph of Arimathea, is in the town of Jasmin, where homes and gardens have been destroyed. The most urgent need is for food and clean water, said Terry Franzén, our liaison with the church, school, and medical clinics. On Sunday, Oct. 9, Christ Church held a special Mission of Mercy collection for Haiti flood relief, and thanks to the generosity of our parishioners, we collected $3,695. Terry ed us on Oct. 15: Below is the report from our doctor [Dr. Codio] who bought and distributed food and water to those impacted by Hurricane Matthew. Haiti Companions, Inc. was able to quickly accept donations and sent $3000 last week. Haiti Companions is the non-profit which now funds our medical, dental, and eye clinics at our partner in Jasmin, as well as in Colin, the St. John s, Minneapolis, partner. [ ] I am taking the money from Christ Church with me next week and we will buy more food and water for those impacted by the hurricane. I first want to thank you for your prompt help that you allowed after the hurricane Matthew devastated some areas in Haiti. Haiti has many, many problems even in normal time, meaning when there is no hurricane or earthquake or anything, Most of us can t eat or drink good water, so those situations just aggravate our situation. In Gressier we have so many areas where even pets should NOT live in such a place, but human beings are living there with all kind of problems that you can't imagine children of less than 6 years of age are being raped, adults also are being raped. Sometimes the women accept to have sex with different men or women just for a plate of BBQ or rice. At Jasmin some houses have been devastated; gardens, which is mostly what they live from up there, and their pets are gone, so now I can imagine how hard that is for them because the only bank they have to save money is their garden and pets. I was able to give some food and water to five different locations in Gressier, which are: Jasmin, Colin, Mariani 13, Bodme, Mariani. The question I would like to be able to answer is how many people I was able to give some food? It is a very good question but difficult to answer exactly, but a rough estimate would be at least 240 per community. [ ] Dr. Frantz Codio, MD Terry, along with Dr. Dianne Pizey, from St. John s, Minneapolis, traveled to Haiti on Oct as planned, to participate in the medical, dental, and eye clinic on Oct. 22, and to visit the schools at St. Joseph and at St. John s partner (Continued on Page 25)

She distributed the funds we d raised while she was there. She ed us on Oct. 27: I am in Jasmin, Haiti, distributing direct aid to those families with damaged homes and gardens, and livestock killed in Hurricane Matthew. The lay leaders had a list of 150 families and they chose 28 to receive $125 each. Everyone was overwhelmed by Christ Church's generosity and caring. Tears shed by all! Please post far and wide. [ ] We raised a total of $3700. I gave $300 to our head nurse, Evens Joicin, whose house was severely damaged when the roof blew off. The exchange rate may not be exactly right. We have the money in Haitian Gourdes. To read a daily account of Terry s recent visit, go to the Haiti Companions blog at haiticompanions.blogspot.com/. 26 Page 26 A Pilgrim s Lens, by The Rev. Jody Greenwood Last July I had the honor to lead a group of eleven teenagers and four fantastic leaders to South Ireland for a Pilgrimage. I've intentionally waited to share much about this trip, wanting the Pilgrims to be the first to tell their story to the Christ Church congregation, which they did on October 2nd. So, now, I'm sharing some of my reflections. They come in two forms - a photo-slideshow (link below) and a few of my daily journal entries - my personal reflections. The over-arching sentiment was captured on Day 2 with this side note: What a ridiculous privilege it is to get to do this for a living. #worththewait First Impressions First stop Glendalough Green, Green, Green Lush Moist Full Elfy Mystical Magical Morning service amid the ancient monastery and cemetery Leaning tombstones fractured walls of stone Whimsical trees Fox-glove belled blooms Blue-marked sheep Two deer resting on green Mist, sun, water, grass, blue, gray, green, green, green. Being Fashioned This group of Pilgrims began as strangers, now they finish each other's sentences... share the load laugh easily together play ENDLESSLY together they even invite SONG (a new thing) How is their fashioning being done? By family? By society? By school? By one another? By God? By God through family, society, school, one another. (Continued on Page 27) Content and format of Pages courtesy of The Rev. Jody Greenwood.

27 November 2016 Page 27 Anticipation (Continued from Page 26) It is the morning of Day 3 and it looks like a beauty! We are headed to the coast and a bird-sanctuary island offshore. I'm excited for the anticipated elation and childlike enthusiasm that will surely greet the Puffins. Yesterday it was dogs of all shapes, sizes, and all welcoming. Today... birds, beach, water, sun, smiles. God's coloring book awaits. The Kingdom of God The Saltee Island - a city unto itself, but not with human dwellers, instead puffins, razorbills, gulls and gannets, the largest sea bird. Living in harmony - the kingdom of God at hand Exile of paradise The deepening darkness of a fern-covered field. Beauty released! Spirits soar and flap and waddle and squawk And then there were seals. The puppies of the sea. Drawn Deep whimsy and majesty are ONE. (Continued on Page 28)

28 Page 28 Ordinary and Extraordinary (Continued from Page 27) This place and time and adventure is anything but ordinary, yet a new routine is quickly adopted as such. God is in the midst of it, yet not always clearly defined as such. Coffee, journal, cereal, morning service, pack sack lunch, load into the bus, off to the day's adventure, snap some shots, hike, explore, reflect, back on the bus, next stop... hike, explore, reflect, snap shots, back on the bus, return to retreat centre, dinner, shower, Compline, pillow. #rinse and repeat Taking time to turn God's love over in my hand and hold the smooth heaviness of God, like a Saltee Beach stone. Then, moving it to my heart. As certain as the new day. Every turn, every glimpse, every laugh, smile, and tear - they are all laced with God's love. Every blade of grass, flower petal, bird's feather, gulls cry - they reveal God's love for me. These ordinary and extraordinary things are God's love. The splash at the bottom of the deep well... God's love. The puffins' cartoon face... God's love. The Pilgrims playing football... God's love. The perseverance of Ireland... God's love. If I take the moment and turn it over in my hand, it reveals itself more clearly. Yet, even when I don't take the time for this reflection, it is no less a certainty in my heart. God's Love. Each day began with a morning prayer time, and ended with Compline from the Celtic Daily Prayer book. We also used daily reflections used by the Northumbria Community. The last meditation given to the Pilgrims was to be read on their first full day back home, after Pilgrimage. I will not die an unlived life, I will not live in fear of falling or catching fire. I choose to inhabit my days, to allow my living to open me, to make me less afraid, more accessible, to loosen my heart until it becomes a wing, a torch, a promise...
