2 St Davids Cathedral invites you to join them & thousands of others around the world to sing on International Peace Day Friday 21st September 2018, pm. This unique day will encourage your children to reflect on the concepts of unity and peace, of all kinds, and how they can be part of it am Introduction to the day pm Workshops to include art & craft, literacy, meditation and music pm Lunch pm Sing for Peace 2pm Leave the Cathedral In times of global unrest and violence we can share with our children ways to find peace within themselves and how they might have a voice to make a difference in their own communities and across the world. Peace and promoting peace is at the centre of many faiths. Here at the cathedral we are contributing to peace and peacefulness with an inspirational day of singing and learning. Ty r Pererin and the Cathedral Music Department will lead the day which culminates with a service sung by all the children. Once you have made a booking resources will be sent to you so that you know which songs we are singing. 3 National Libraries Week 8th 12th October 2018, 10.30am 2pm Visit St Davids Cathedral Library, The only library housed in a Welsh Cathedral. Foundation & KS 2 programme available Visit the library Climb the 25 Mediaeval stone stairs to the Library and soak up the atmosphere of this historic space. Aims of the Visit: To give your pupils a special opportunity to see an historic library containing 7,000 books dating from the 16th to the 21st Century. To use the information from the library to investigate aspects of the Cathedral. Listen to what some of the old rare books have to say and how they link to the history of the Cathedral. Respond to the artefacts you are given through a variety of activities, including comparing the old drawings of parts of the Cathedral with what you can see now, and see some of the first Bibles in English and in Welsh and find out their links to the Cathedral, make your own Use artefacts in the Library drawings, photographs and notes to take back and Treasury to find out who to school. visited the Cathedral. The Psalms not only speak to us ancient truths, they open up to us the world of modern scientific thought. Come and try these experiments for yourselves and wonder at the knowledge of the Psalmist. Just 2.50 per pupil.
5 Music St Davids Cathedral available October & November 2018 Tŷ'r Pererin & Cathedral Music Department An opportunity to hear the cathedral organist demonstrate the versatility and grandeur of the organ, the Choose from a selection of workshops: King of Instruments. Visit the Song School and learn about the choristers of St. Davids Cathedral. Try your hand at conducting and singing. Make a musical instrument to accompany your singing. only 2.50 per pupil Visit the great Quire and sit in the ancient misericords. Bring a song to sing at the Shrine of St David and record your performance. Take away a new song to sing at school. Make a soundscape using melodic and rhythmic sounds and silence around the cathedral. Visit the bell tower to learn about the sights and sounds found there. 6 Find the Little Things: St Davids Geocache Challenge Integrated Curriculum Key Stage 2 October 2018 Try geocaching: An opportunity to tackle a series of challenges using many disciplines to unlock the secrets of St Davids Shrine. This cross-curricular programme includes problem-solving, team work and communication. Inside the cache boxes you will find activities and information to help pupils use their knowledge and skills in a variety of contexts to solve each challenge. Accumulate all the information, collect the stamps and complete the key questions to enable your pupils to read the clues hidden in the Shrine of St David. This programme will enable you to bring together diverse fields of study in an inspirational way. Suitable for different age groups working together and helpful in delivering an integrated curriculum. A simple points and forfeits system encourages the pupils to work as a team. This event works best with no more than 10 pupils to a team and a maximum of 60 pupils in total.
7 Sacred Space: A Place to be Mindful St Davids Cathedral as a Place of Christian Worship Journey around the Cathedral to find out how people use this space. A focus on RE and Wellbeing 10.30am 2pm Aims of the visit: To bring the Cathedral alive to your pupils as a place of prayer and worship, a space where people find peace, encouragement and challenge. To support units of work on ritual, beliefs, signs and symbols, worship and the importance of sacred space for Christians. Visit the new Cathedral Labyrinth to experience how it feels to walk mindfully. Find out about the ancient history of the labyrinth and how Christians use them today. Take away a finger labyrinth to use at school for moments of meditation and mindfulness. Explore the rich Christian heritage at the cathedral. Find out about key people and events using art and story. Consider how these depict key Christian concepts and how we can learn from these today. Make a copy of the Mediaeval Presbytery tiles to turn into a stained glass window. Moses and the Passover using Godly play strategy Why do people use candles and incense? Experience a short time of reflection at the Shrine of St David. A time to express your thoughts, hopes or dreams and consider how this might be used as a religious ritual by some people. 8 Advent to Christmas Programmes Visit an amazing building and wonder at the Christmas story Follow the Star 1½ hour visit for 3-4yr olds Travel around 4 interactive stations: Mary s home, the journey to Bethlehem, in the fields and at the crib A chance for children to become part of the telling of the Christmas story. Come dressed up or use our resources. Opportunities to respond to the story using song, movement and listening skills. Now available between 28th Nov-20th Dec 2018
9 Advent to Christmas Programmes Christmas through the Keyhole 28th Nov 20th Dec am 2pm Who lives in a place like this..? Search for clues in the deserted homes as you make a journey from the Christmas tree to the manger. An interactive trail to help you become part of the re-telling of the Christmas Story. Learn about daily life in 1st Century Palestine. See the tools Mary & Joseph would have used and try your hand at weaving and potting. Follow the tracks towards Bethlehem and find where the shepherds have left their sheep. Learn how to use their wool. Who left the dusty map, discarded the old telescope and left the pungent smell of frankincense? End your journey at the stable and have a time of quiet to think about the deeper meaning of Christmas. At the end of your visit, receive a golden key to take back to school asking you to unlock further themes from the story. Available for Foundation & KS 2
10 St Nicholas Day Schools Event Thursday 6th December pm Who was St Nicholas? What s the link between St Nicholas and Fr Christmas? Could you take part in an ancient St Nicholas Day tradition? A series of workshops to help your pupils learn about St Nicholas, Christian values related to celebrating Christmas and a revival of pre Reformation tradition, a child Bishop! Learn about the meanings behind the gifts given to a Bishop; the Ring, Pectoral Cross, Stole, Mitre, Cope, Staff and Bible. Decorate a bauble as a reminder of the Christian values St Nicholas and other Bishops teach us.? Participate in the drama about St Nicholas in the Chapel dedicated to him in the Cathedral. Learn a song about St Nicholas to be sung during the worship. Join together with others to see the Child Bishop chosen by Bishop Joanna. Find out how Bishop Joanna feels about giving up her role to a child! After being given the role of a Bishop, the child will lead us as we join in songs, prayers and readings to celebrate the day. Before the Reformation there was a St Nicholas day custom, the election of a 'boy bishop' who was dressed in the Bishop s robes and allowed to preach in church. The 'boy bishop' was chosen by the choir boys in cathedrals and held office for 12 days. Could one of your pupils be a Child Bishop for the day? Find out by ing education@stdavidscathedral.org.uk

12 Please read this information before your visit Tŷ r St. Davids Cathedral is an education and pilgrimage centre to enable visitors to engage with Christian heritage. The work at Tŷ r Pererin enables the cathedral community to continue to build relationships with schools and other visitors. We respect the diversity of background and beliefs that our visitors may have and we welcome all into this place in the spirit of Christian hospitality. School responsibilities during the visit At all times the responsibility for the pastoral care and supervision for your students is with your staff. We will do everything we can to help you. We want students to enjoy and achieve throughout their visit - Please have mobile phones in silent or off mode as they can disturb activities in Tŷ r Pererin and the cathedral. Timings Our visit programmes usually begin at 10.30am and finish at 2pm. Cost Our full day programmes are 2.50 per pupil. All staff and adults free. Arrival The timetable and information sent to you as confirmation of your visit will state whether your programme will begin at Tŷ r Pererin or the Cathedral and the grouping of the students. For Tŷ r Pererin coaches can drop students at Nun Street (SA62 6NU) entrance to Ysgol Bro Dewi). Please walk through the school driveway down to Tŷ r Pererin this avoids all main roads. For the Cathedral coaches can drop pupils near Cross Square or Oriel y Parc, proceed down The Pebbles and down the flight of 39 steps. You will be welcomed by a member of the education team outside the main entrances. This gives us opportunity to prepare the students to enter the buildings in a respectful manner and with some focus. Lunch is taken at Tŷ r Pererin, students will be escorted along Cathedral Close and up Quickwell Hill or through St Davids if weather is wet or up steep cobbled footpath if weather is dry. All rubbish must go back to school with you. Throughout lunchtime your students must remain closely supervised. THERE ARE TOILETS AVAILABLE IN THE CATHEDRAL AND IN TŶ R PERERIN We hope this information enables you to make a safe and enjoyable visit to Tŷ r Pererin and the Cathedral and that your students will be able to participate fully in a quality learning experience.
