ADVENT 4 The Gathering of God s People The choir sings a section of the Advent Prose in procession from the West End. Please stand Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness. Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, my salvation shall not tarry: I have blotted out as a thick cloud thy transgressions: Fear not, for I will save thee: For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Redeemer. Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness. The Greeting In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all; and also with you. The Summary of the Law Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ says: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it. You shall love your neighbour as yourself On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets. Matthew 22: Lord, have mercy on us, and write these your laws in our hearts. The Call to Penitence The axe is laid at the root of the trees; every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down. But confident in God s mercy we confess our sins. cf Matthew 3.10 Kyrie (sung by the choir) Kyrie eleison; Christe eleison; Kyrie eleison. Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy on you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect of the Day God our redeemer, who prepared the blessed Virgin Mary to be the mother of your Son: Grant that, as she looked for his coming as our saviour, so we may be ready to greet him when he comes again as our judge; who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Please sit Proclaiming and Receiving the Word The First Reading Micah 5: 2-5a A reading from the book of the prophet Micah: But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days. Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labour has brought forth; then the rest of his kindred shall return to the people of Israel. And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall live secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth; and he shall be the one of peace. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. remain seated while the choir sings: The Psalm The Magnificat My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his hand-maiden. For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed, for ever. The Second Reading Hebrews 10: 5-10 A reading from the letter to the Hebrews: When Christ came into the world, he said, Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body you have prepared for me; in burnt-offerings and sin-offerings you have taken no pleasure. Then I said, See, God, I have come to do your will, O God (in the scroll of the book it is written of me). When he said above, You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt-offerings and sin-offerings (these are offered according to the law), then he added, See, I have come to do your will. He

abolishes the first in order to establish the second. And it is by God s will that we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand The Lighting of the Advent Wreath Please stand as the Gospel moves down the Nave On each of the four Sundays in this season we will light a candle on the Advent Wreath to remind us of those who prepared the way for the coming of Christ. Today we remember the Blessed Virgin Mary. The choir sings: Blessed are you, Sovereign Lord, merciful and gentle; to you be praise and glory for ever! Your light has shone in our darkened world through the childbearing of blessed Mary; grant that we who have seen your glory may daily be renewed in your image and prepared like her for the coming of your Son, who is the Lord and Saviour of all. and the people join in singing the response: The deacon then lights the candle The Gospel Luke 1: 39-45, Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St N: Response All turn to face the reader In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary s greeting, the child leapt in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leapt for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her by the Lord. And Mary said, My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant.

Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants for ever. This is the gospel of the Lord. Response The Post-Gospel Hymn As the Gospel procession moves east, all sing a hymn in response to the Gospel. Sing we of the blessèd Mother Who received the angel s word, And obedient to his summons Bore in love the infant Lord; Sing we of the joys of Mary At whose breast that child was fed Who is Son of God eternal And the everlasting Bread. Sing we, too, of Mary s sorrows, Of the sword that pierced her through, When beneath the cross of Jesus She his weight of suffering knew, Looked upon her Son and Saviour Reigning high on Calvary s tree, Saw the price of man s redemption Paid to set the sinner free. Sing the chiefest joy of Mary When on earth her work was done, And the Lord of all creation Brought her to his heavenly home: Virgin Mother, Mary blessèd, Raised on high and crowned with grace, May your Son, the world s redeemer, Grant us all to see his face. Tune: Abbot s Leigh Cyril Taylor ( ) G.B. Timms (b. 1910)

The Sermon The Presentation We welcome Olamide and Olumide who come to be baptized. I invite their parents and sponsors to present them now. The sponsors answer: We present Olamide and Olumide to be baptized. The Dean s Vicar asks the sponsors: Parents and godparents, will you accept the responsibilities placed upon you in bringing Olamide and Olumide for baptism and answer on their behalf? By your own prayers and example, by your teaching and love, will you encourage them in the life and faith of the Christian community? The sponsors answer With the help of God, we will. The Dean s Vicar continues: In baptism these children begin their journey in faith. You speak for them today. Will you care for them, and help them to take their place within the life and worship of Christ s Church? The sponsors answer With the help of God, we will. The Decision The Dean says to the sponsors: In baptism, God calls us from darkness into his marvellous light. To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him. Therefore I ask: Do you reject the devil and all proud rebellion against God? I reject them. Do you renounce the deceit and corruption of evil? I renounce them. Do you repent of the sins that separate us from God and neighbour? I repent of them. Do you turn to Christ as Saviour? I turn to Christ. Do you submit to Christ as Lord? I submit to Christ. Do you come to Christ, the Way, the Truth and the Life? I come to Christ.

The Dean s Vicar says to the congregation You have heard these our brothers and sisters respond to Christ. Will you support them in this calling? The congregation answers We will support them. The Baptism Praise God who made heaven and earth. Who keeps his promise for ever. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We give you thanks that at the beginning of creation your Holy Spirit moved upon the waters to bring forth light and life. With water you cleanse and replenish the earth; you nourish and sustain all living things. We give you thanks that through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people out of slavery into freedom, and brought them through the river Jordan to new life in the land of promise. We give you thanks for your Son Jesus Christ: for his baptism by John, for his anointing with the Holy Spirit. We give you thanks that through the deep waters of death, Jesus delivered us from our sins and was raised to new life in triumph. We give you thanks for the grace of the Holy Spirit who forms us in the likeness of Christ and leads us to proclaim your Kingdom. And now we give you thanks that you have called Olamide and Olumide to new birth in your Church through the waters of baptism. Pour out your Holy Spirit in blessing and sanctify this water so that they who is to be baptized in it may be made one with Christ in his death and resurrection. May they die to sin, rise to newness of life, and continue for ever in Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we give you praise and honour in the unity of the Spirit, now and for ever. Amen. The Dean s Vicar asks the sponsors: Do you believe and accept the Christian faith into which Olamide and Olumide are to be baptized? I do. The Dean s Vicar addresses the congregation. Brothers and sisters, I ask you to profess together with Olamide and Olumide s sponsors the faith of the Church.

Do you believe and trust in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe and trust in God the Son? I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Olamide, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Olumide, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Dean s Vicar makes the sign of the cross on the forehead of the candidate for baptism, saying Olamide and Olumide, Christ claims you for his own. Receive the sign of the cross. Live as a disciple of Christ, fight the good fight, finish the race, keep the faith. Confess Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, look for his coming in glory. May almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness, restore in you the image of his glory, and lead you in the light and obedience of Christ. Amen.

The Dean s Vicar continues. Olamide and Olumide, God has called you into his Church. The congregation joins the minister, saying We therefore receive and welcome you as a member with us of the body of Christ, as a child of the one heavenly Father, and as an inheritor of the kingdom of God. The Peace All stand The priest introduces the peace with these words In the tender mercy of our God, the dayspring from on high shall break upon us, to give light to those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. The priest says The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. Celebrating at the Lord s Table The Offertory Hymn Ye who own the faith of Jesus Sing the wonders that were done, When the love of God the Father O er our sin the victory won, When he made the Virgin Mary Mother of his only Son. Hail Mary, hail Mary, hail Mary full of grace. Blessèd were the chosen people Out of whom the Lord did come, Blessèd was the land of promise Fashioned for his earthly home; But more blessèd far the Mother She who bare him in her womb. Hail Mary, hail Mary, hail Mary full of grace. Wherefore let all faithful people Tell the honour of her name, Let the Church in her foreshadowed Part in her thanksgiving claim; What Christ s Mother sang in gladness Let Christ s people sing the same. Hail Mary, hail Mary, hail Mary full of grace. Praise, O Mary, praise the Father, Praise thy Saviour and thy Son, Praise the everlasting Spirit, Who hath made thee ark and throne; O er all creatures high exalted, Lowly praise the Three in One. Hail Mary, hail Mary, hail Mary full of grace. Tune: Daily, daily V. Stuckey S. Coles ( ) Melody from a French Paroissien Composer unidentified

The Taking of the Bread and Wine Look upon us in mercy not in judgement; draw us from hatred to love; make the frailty of our praise a dwelling place for your glory. Amen. The priest says Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us Therefore let us celebrate the feast The Lord be with you. and also with you Lift up your hearts. we lift them to the Lord The Great Thanksgiving Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. it is right to give our thanks and praise. Father, almighty and everliving God, at all times and in all places it is right to give you thanks and praise: Salvation is your gift through the coming of your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, and by him you will make all things new when he returns in glory to judge the world: And so with all your people, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: The choir sings Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest! Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest!

Blessed are you, Father, the creator and sustainer of all things; you made us in your own image, male and female you created us; even when we turned away from you, you never ceased to care for us, but in your love and mercy you freed us from the slavery of sin, giving your only begotten Son to become man and suffer death on the cross to redeem us: he made there the one complete and all-sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world: he instituted, and in his holy Gospel commanded us to continue, a perpetual memory of his precious death until he comes again. All remain standing On the night that he was betrayed he took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks to you, he gave it to them, saying, Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. The choir sings and all repeat each line

Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and as we eat and drink these holy gifts, grant by the power of the life-giving Spirit that we may be made one in your holy Church and partakers of the body and blood of your Son, that he may dwell in us and we in him: Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, Almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. The Lord s Prayer As our Saviour taught us we are bold to say Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread The priest breaks the consecrated bread for communion and says The bread which we break is a sharing in the body of Christ. We being many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The Communion Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God, who has taken away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed. Please sit while the choir sings Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace.

From the Dublin Troper, 14th century arranged by Andrew Carter (b. 1939) The Communion Motet Angelus ad virginem sub intrans in conclave, The angel to the virgin came and entered conversation, Virginis formidinem demulcens, inquit: Ave. To dispel the virgin s apprehension, he said gently: Hail. Ave, Regina virginum, coeli terraquae Dominum Hail, thou Queen of virgins, The Lord of heaven and earth Concipies et paries intacta salutem hominum; Thou shalt conceive and bear while whole the saviour of mankind. Tu porta coeli facta, medella criminum. Thou art made the door of heaven, healer of sinners. Quomodo conciperem, quae virum non cognovi? How should I conceive as I know not a man? Qualiter confringerem quod firma mente vovi? How should I go against a solemn vow of my mind? Spiritus Sancti gratia perficiet haec omnia; The Holy Spirit s grace will make it all take place Ne timeas sed gaudeas, secura, quod castimonia Do not fear, but rejoice, secure that chastity Manebit in te pura Dei potentia. Will remain pure in you through God s power. Ad haec virgo nobilis respondens inquit ei: At which the noble virgin answering said she: Servula sum humilis omnipotentis Dei. I am the humble servant of the all-powerful God. Tibi coelesti nuntio, tanti secreti conscio, Thou the messenger from above, such hidden things revealing, Consentiens, et cupiens videre factum quod audio, I am willing and longing to see performed that which I have heard Parata sum parere Dei consilio. I am prepared to bear a child, as God wills it. Eia Mater Domini, quae pacem redidisti Ah Mother of God, who brings back peace Angelis et homini, cum Christum genuisti: To angels and men, with Christ s birth: Tuum exora Filium, ut se nobis propitium Beseech thy Son, that our redemption Exhibeat, et deleat peccata, praestans auxilium He may show, and remove our sins, giving help Vita frui beata post hoc exilium. For a blessed life after this exile. Anonymous, 14th century The Great Silence The congregation is invited to spend some moments in silent reflection

Going Out as God s People Prayer after Communion Heavenly Father, you have given us a pledge of eternal redemption. Grant that we may always eagerly celebrate the saving mystery of the incarnation of your Son. We ask this through him whose coming is certain, whose day draws near, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Father of all, we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. All say: May we who share Christ s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Post-communion Hymn Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord: Unnumbered blessings, give my spirit voice; Tender to me the promise of his word; In God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice.
