3 Heidelberg Catechism Lord s Day 1 Question Q. What is your only comfort in life and in death? Heidelberg Catechism Lord s Day 1 Answer 1 A. That I am not my own, but belong body and soul, in life and in death to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. 3

4 He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven; in fact, all things must work together for my salvation. Because I belong to Him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for Him. 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. 5 For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 4

11 8 We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. 9 We also know that law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, 1 Timothy 1: Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Romans 3:19 11

12 20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. Romans 3:20 18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18 12

13 Heidelberg Catechism Lord s Day 4 Question Q. Does God permit such disobedience and rebellion to go unpunished? Heidelberg Catechism Lord s Day 4 Answer 10 A. Certainly not. God is terribly angry with the sin we are born with as well as the sins we personally commit. As a just judge, God will punish them both now and in eternity, having declared: Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all the things written in the book of the law. 13

14 L. A. W. Let s look at God s Law (10 Commandments) to see God s definition of goodness: Have you ever lied? Have you ever stolen anything? Have you ever used God s name in vain? Have you ever lusted (adultery)? 7 The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. Proverbs 19:7 14

Are you innocent or guilty before God? 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. Does that concern you? 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom.. Because he saves us from our sins, and because salvation should not be sought and cannot be found in anyone else. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. Matthew 1:21 12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12 18

22 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 2 Corinthians 5: Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me.
