1 Gospels - Acts Unit 8 - The Final Week CHRONOLOGY OF THE FINAL WEEK:! Sunday -! Monday - the Fig tree and cleansing the! Tuesday - Day of!! Wednesday - The Discourse! Thursday - meal (Last Supper) and discourse! Friday -! Saturday - day of quiet! Sunday -! The Final Week began in and ended in. I. SUNDAY - The Triumphal entry into ( Sunday) (Mt. 21, Mk. 11, Lk. 19, Jn. 12) A. The triumphal entry contains three specific events that display Jesus : I. Finding the unbroken colt just as Jesus had stated shows His II. Riding on an unbroken colt without any problems shows His Godly over the animal kingdom III. Riding on an unbroken colt fulfilled the in Zechariah 9:9 of the coming Messiah B. The Triumphal entry caused two reactions: I. The people: spread and branches II. The Pharisees: bah, humbug! They tell Jesus to calm the crowds C. According to Jewish Law, the Sunday before Passover was the day the Passover Lamb was to be examined and selected. Jesus is the perfect II. MONDAY - Cursing the Fig Tree and cleansing the Temple (Mt. 21, Mk. 11, Lk. 19) A. Cursing the Fig Tree I. Fig Trees in Israel would typically show fruit bearing leaves. The appearance of leaves on this tree signified it should be. II. This tree was in a sense a because it appeared to be something it was not. Jesus states the tree represents that generation of. B. Cleansing the Temple I. Recall that Jesus this at the beginning of His ministry in John 2. Three years later and they still have not learned. II. IV. WEDNESDAY - The Discourse (Mt ) This is Jesus largest section dealing with the future. To understand this section we must realize a few key points. I. Jesus is answering three question raised by his disciples. The disciples are, representing the faithful remnant of who were waiting for their Lord to come. II. Jesus is speaking of prophecy for - The people, the land, and its main city, Jerusalem. There is no reference to the or the prophetic program of the church (rapture). III. Jesus is speaking about the seven year period known as the and what the nation of can expect DURING THAT TIME. A. The Discussion 24:1-2 As Jesus and the Disciples are leaving Jerusalem for the day, Jesus states that the Temple and all of Jerusalem will be entirely. B. The Questions 24:3 I. when will these things be? (The destruction of Jerusalem) I. Answer found in Luke 21:20-24 II. what will be the sign of your? (How will we know when you re going to do this?) I. This question will be answered in vs 4-26 NOTE: Jewish (study of future events) only contains two sections - before the Messiah comes, and after he comes to reign and rule forever. C. JESUS' ANSWERS (MT. 24:1-31, LK. 21:20-24) I. "These are the..." MT. 24: THE FIRST HALF 4-8

" vs ! - it will be lightning! - it will be universally! - it will a time of earthly destruction! - it will be by heavenly disturbances! - the Son of Man will come in and! THIS IS THE SECOND OR SECOND! OF JESUS CHRIST AT THE END OF THE TRIBULATION III. "WHEN THESE THINGS TAKE PLACE... " LK. 21! - "Jerusalem surrounded by " (Roman armies under Titus)! - "they will fall by the edge of the sword" (Titus and his armies killed! thousands)! - "led captive into all the nations" (Israel no longer an independent country)! - "Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles" (the Temple demolished, the! city left in ruins)! THIS IS THE. Jesus finishes His teachings on the future with several allegories instructing the nation to be ready for His return. In the end, only those who have been faithful to the Lord will be allowed into the Millennial Kingdom. V. THURSDAY- THE LAST SUPPER AND THE UPPER ROOM DISCOURSE (Mt. 26, Mk. 14, Lk. 22, Jn ) A. THE LAST SUPPER I. Preparation for the Supper - Mk. 14 I. The disciples were to follow a man carrying a pitcher of (men did not usually do this).

CH 17: PRAYER FOR DISCIPLESHIP - Jesus prays for : for His (confidence in God's power) and for His (return to heaven) - Jesus prays for the : for their (under trials) and for their (set apart for God's work) - Jesus prays for disciples: for their (In Christ) and for their with Him (deeper understanding) C. 7 IV. FRIDAY- THE CRUCIFIXION OF JESUS CHRIST (MT , MK , LK' , JN ) A. 3 TRIALS (3-5 AM) ALL 1., THE FORMER HIGH PRIEST (Jn. 18:12-23) 1. They " " charge Jesus with and sentence Him to die. 3. Immediately after the sentence,, full of remorse, returns the money and hangs himself. B. 3 TRIALS (6-8 AM) 1. PILATE (Lk. 23:1-5) 1. Since the Sanhedrin could not, they turn Jesus over to Pilate, the Roman. 2. The Sanhedrin change the charge to, claiming He disobeyed Rome and was the "King of the Jews". 3. Pilate, after questioning Jesus, claimed He was no to Rome and sent Him to. 2. HEROD ANTIPAS (Lk. 23:6-12) 1. Herod had no real, he was only curious to hear Jesus' testimony. 2. When Jesus would not respond, Herod and his soldiers Him and sent Him back to. 3. PILATE (Jn. 18:28-40) 1. Pilate tries to Jesus times but the Sanhedrin have created a mob scene. 2. THE BEATING OF JESUS CHRIST (Mt. 27:27-31; Jn. 19) 1. the time Jesus is beaten and condemned: A. spitting on face, beating with fists, slapping, blindfolded, mocking, taunting, blaspheming, scourging, crown of thorns, purple robe and staff in hand, bowing in mockery, ripping off bloody robe D.
