1 Knights of Columbus Knights of Columbus Happy Thanksgiving December 2014 Page 1 A note from the Editor And again, when He bringeth in the First begotten into the world, He saith, And let all the angels of God worship Him - Hebrews 1:6 Phil Riordan, Editor phil@riordanhome.com He loves us without limit, and offers Himself to us in the Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist. Can we not give Jesus a few minutes of love and adoration in return? On the third Tuesday of each month, our Council participates in the Eucharistic Adoration at the Church Chapel. We are assigned the 5:30 to 6:00 pm time period. The Council s next Eucharistic Adoration will be on Tuesday, December 16th. Grand Knights Report I hope all had a very Happy Thanksgiving with a chance to enjoy some time with family and/or friends. The occurrence of Thanksgiving, just before the end of the liturgical year, is very fitting. Even though Thanksgiving is most often thought of as a secular holiday, as Catholics, we recognize that all that we have reason to be thankful for, including life itself, comes from God. Thus, at this time of year, we can very appropriately give thanks to the Lord for the graces and blessings that he has given us over the year. We can especially be thankful for God s help and guidance in allowing us in the Incarnation Council to be his agents and serve many of the needs of the Parish, Church, School and Community, and to enjoy the fellowship of all of our Brother Knights. We can also express appreciation to Him for the many opportunities to serve that lie ahead within our Council, including the many activities described elsewhere in this News & Views Our Monthly Newsletter CALENDAR December 2014 Dec 09 Dec 11 Dec 13 Dec 14 Dec 16 Dec 25 Dec 27 Dec 28 Officer s Meeting (6:00pm) (CH) Business Meeting (7:00pm) (CH) Basketball Free Throw (8:00 9:00 am and 1:00 2:30 pm) (Incarnation School) Corporate Communion Mass (4:30 pm) (Church) and Council Christmas Dinner (6:00 pm) (Café Baci) Car Ticket Sale for Parish (All Masses) Car Ticket Sale for Parish (All Masses) Incarnation Parish Christmas Party 5:00 pm (PC) Eucharistic Adoration (5:30 pm) (CL) MERRY CHRISTMAS Car Ticket Sale for Parish (All Masses) Car Ticket Sale for Parish (All Masses) Pancake Breakfast (8:00 11:00 am) (PC) C=Church CL=Chapel CH=Church Hall PC=Parish Center BIRTHDAYS Dec 03 Dec 13 Dec 13 Dec 14 Dec 16 Dec 20 Dec 23 Dec 29 Norman Gibertini Glenn A. 2 December 2014 Page 2 Grand Knights Report Newsletter. On November 30th, we entered the new liturgical year and the season of Advent when we prepare our hearts and minds for the coming of Jesus Christ. This preparation certainly means getting ready for the anniversary of His birth that marks the start of the Christmas Time. However, we also need to consider His second coming, the parousia, at the end of time. As the month of December progresses, we should certainly reflect on the historical aspects of the coming of the Christ Child. Christmas conveys the message of love that warms us as we think of the innocence of the precious Baby born under trying circumstances in a manger who died to save us from the consequences of our sins. I know that our increasingly secular and material world creates distractions and challenges that make focusing on the true meaning of Christ s birth difficult. Nonetheless, our own Council s efforts to promote the theme of Keep Christ in Christmas can help remind us of this. Thinking about the second coming and the end of time may be even more difficult. However, we should also remember that the time will come when all will be held accountable for the lives that we have led on this Earth. With this in mind, God calls upon each of us to always be prepared. For as Jesus said, "As to the exact day or hour, no one knows it, neither the angels in heaven nor even the Son, but only the Father. Be constantly on the watch! Stay awake! You do not know when the appointed time will come" (Mark 13:32-33). Also remember Jesus words in John 5:27-29: And He gave Him power to exercise judgment, because He is the Son of Man. Do not be amazed at this, because the hour is coming in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, and will come out, those who have done good deeds to the resurrection of life, but those who have done wicked deeds to the resurrection of condemnation. Those who have believed in Jesus and done good deeds will enjoy eternal life with God and will be forever united with all the others who have done so. 3 December 2014 Page 3 salvation should guide us always, but especially during Advent, as we get ready for the coming of the Lord. Vivat Jesus! Art Reilly Grand Knight District Deputy Report Thank you, Thank you to all District #50 Brothers who participated in Bishop Dewane s Fifth Annual Veterans Day Mass at the Sarasota National Cemetery to honor the men and women who have served our Country and are serving us today. These Brothers were responsible for handling traffic control and the parking for the clergy, KofC State Officials, invited dignitaries and guests and the general public at the Sarasota National Cemetery. Various Council and Assemblies in Sarasota and Bradenton worked with the Diocese of Venice in planning and participating in this event. At the December 5th and 6th Florida State Council Officer, Director and District Deputy Mid-Year Meeting in Daytona Beach, I will be giving a report on the health of District #50 and each Council. Overall, District #50 is doing very well. As of November 18th, the District has achieved 164% of its membership goal. With regards to insurance, the District has reached 75% of its goal, but it will reach 100% by December 31st. Keep up the great work! Also, each Council should continue implementing their very active Service Program Plans. Just a reminder that a First and Second Degree Exemplification will be held on December 11th at Our Lady of Victory Council #3358 in Sarasota. The First Degree will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the Second Degree at 7:45 pm. Save December 13th on your calendar. On this evening, the 2nd Annual District #50 Christmas Dinner and Scottish Gift Exchange will be held at the Café Baci Italian Restaurant. The menu is mixed greens salad, rolls and butter, a choice of three entrees, and tiramisu for dessert. Tickets are $37.50/person or $75.00/couple. After dinner, a Scottish Gift Exchange will be held. Each couple or individual should bring a wrapped gift valued no more than $ Santa Claus (Incarnation Council Warden Phil Riordan) and his Elf (District Deputy Charlie Culkin) will conduct the Gift Exchange. My wife, Cindi, and I and District Warden John Wojtyna and his wife wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Vivat Jesus! Charlie Culkin District Deputy #50 Field Agent Report Life Insurance As a Gift? The initial reaction for many people when you mention life insurance as a gift is a quick step back and a questioning stare. How morbid, they think. While it may seem that way when you first mention it, life insurance is really a thoughtful gift that can be a financial life preserver in tough times. The problem with life insurance is the general perception. Many think of death instead of the great benefits it provides, and the security that it offers even while you re alive... Life insurance should be thought of as a precautionary protective measure for a family unit. The purchase of this product can mean saving your home, sending your children to college, and preserving your spouse s quality of life in the event of your death. One of the times you may want to purchase life insurance for someone (C) Knights of Columbus Bee Ridge Road - Sarasota, Florida continued on page 4...

4 December 2014 Page 4 Field Agents Report is when a family has a new baby. It s a great, low-cost way to set money aside for the future (i.e. college tuition, housing, business start-up, etc.). Of greater importance, it ensures these children will have insurance as adults, in case an illness later in life makes him or her uninsurable. Newlyweds are also ideal recipients for life insurance. As they join their lives and financial responsibilities, young couples need to make sure that their early investments are fully protected. If something were to happen to one of them, the other may be faced with serious financial hardship. A life insurance policy is an ideal way to ensure their future and protect their assets. As nontraditional as it may be, life insurance is a wise and caring gift to purchase for many people. Vivat Jesus! Jerry Hayes KofC Field Agent Jerry.hayes@kofc.org. INCARNATION SPELLING BEE IS A SUCCESS Twenty-five students from Incarnation Catholic School participated in our Council s Fourth Annual Spelling Bee on Wednesday evening, October 29th. They were supported by nearly 75 parents, brothers, sisters and friends. The competition was divided into two classes 5th and 6th graders and 7th and 8th graders. After intense competition, ribbons were awarded in each class to the following first, second and third place winners. 5th and 6th Grade Class 1st Place Brianna Ream 2nd Place Catherine Dowell 3rd Place Lisa Epps 7th and 8th Grade Class 1st Place Nicolas Vu 2nd Place Michael Thayer 3rd Place Tom Levitt The first place winners received a $25.00 AMC Theater Gift Certificate the second and third place winners received $15.00 and $10.00 AMC Theater Gift Certificates, respectively. The first place winners advance to the Regional competition because there was no District competition. While only the first place winners move on to the Regional, all the participating students were winners in this year s competition. We thank Incarnation School Principal, Dr. Ann Davis, and the 5th 8th grade school teachers for supporting the Spelling Bee and preparing the students for the competition. Also, special thanks to Father Jacek and Father Matt for attending the competition. And a big thanks goes out to Spelling Bee Director Steve Christie, PGK PFN and his committee for the success of this year s competition. Assisting Steve were Gabe Febbraio, Jerry Hayes, and Joe DeStefano as judges; Cindi Culkin as the word caller a tough job; Past Grand Knight Steve Christie, Grand Knight Art Reilly and Brother Scott Scheuer for registration; Financial Secretary Charlie Culkin for hall set-up and photography; and Peggy Christie for refreshments. 5th & 6th Grade Spelling Bee Winners (C) Knights of Columbus Bee Ridge Road - Sarasota, Florida continued on page 5...

5 December 2014 Page 5 7th & 8th Grade Spelling Bee Winners PANCAKE BREAKFAST S PROCEEDS SUPPORT PARISH SOUND SYSTEM The Incarnation Council Monthly Pancake Breakfast has gotten off to a great start. It began August 24th after the 9:00 a.m. Mass in the Church Hall because the Parish Center air conditioning was being replaced. Ninety hungry Parishioners enjoyed pancakes, link sausage, apple juice and coffee. On September 28th, the next Pancake Breakfast was held in the Parish Center three days after the new air conditioning system went on line. This time, 124 Parishioners enjoyed another delicious meal, which also included fresh fruit and chocolate chips for the pancakes. At the October 26th Pancake Breakfast, we served 112 Parishioners. For each pancake breakfast, the Council has designated the net profits for a specific Church, School, Ministry need or a Council charity. For the August and September events, the net profits were designated for new sound systems in the Church and Parish Center. After the 7:00 a.m. Mass on October 26th, Grand Knight Art Reilly presented Father Jacek with a $ check. He was surprised by the amount of the check. Father Mike called the Council check a down payment for the new sound systems. A portion of the October 26th pancake breakfast net profits will be used to make a contribution to the St. Vincent DePaul Society s Annual Thanksgiving Drive for St. Michael s Parish in Wauchula. Council Chancellor Joe DeStefano, PGK is chairing the Pancake Committee. He is looking for Council Brothers, and their wives, to cook, serve and clean-up. If you can help, please call Brother Joe at or him at destefano819@yahoo.com. Come and enjoy a delicious pancake breakfast on Sunday, December 28th. Over three hundred runners participated in this year s race to support the SCSO fund-raiser. Runners Heading Down the Straightaway On Monday, November 11th Veterans Day Incarnation Council Brothers participated in Bishop Dewane s Fourth Annual Veterans Day Mass at the Sarasota National Cemetery. They were part of a District #50 team, under the leadership of District Deputy/Financial Secretary Charlie Culkin, responsible for handling the parking for the clergy, KofC State Officials and other invited dignitaries and guests. 7 December 2014 Page 7 Cindi Culkin Modeling Her Volunteer Shirt For two Brother Knights, November 12th was a fun day. Grand Knight Art Reilly and Brother Jim Listwan were judges at the Incarnation School s Annual Science Fair. Each judge evaluated entries in various categories. According to Brother Jim, It was hard work, but it was fun. During the weekend of November 15-16, various Brother Knights helped the St. Vincent DePaul Society load a truck with clothes, furniture and food for St. Michael s Parish in Wauchula. Brother Jason Peters and his wife, Tammi, were in charge of the Annual Wauchula Event for the St. Vincent DePaul Society. On November 23rd, our Council held its monthly Pancake Breakfast from 8:00 am to 11:00 am. Over 70 people enjoyed pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit, juice and coffee. Thanks to our Chancellor Joe DeStefano PGK, the Pancake Committee Chair, and all who staffed and assisted in the preparation and clean-up for this event. The net proceeds will be used to fund a Memorial to the Unborn. The following weekend November Trustee/Director Tony Tambini and his team conducted our Council s Annual Keep Christ in Christmas Car Magnet sale after all Masses. The car magnets will be on sale at the Incarnation Parish Office and School until Christmas. The results will be reported in the January newsletter. Also during the month, our Council Youth Programs were in full swing. Field Agent/Director Jerry Hayes got the Annual Essay Contest underway, while Grand Knight/Director Art Reilly oversaw the First Annual Keep Christ in Christmas Poster Competition. This competition will alternate every other year with the Substance Abuse Poster Competition. Also, Director Bill Donivan was planning the Annual Basketball Free Throw Competition, which is scheduled for Thursday, December 11h. All the results will be announced in the January newsletter. As you can see, our Council had a busy month. We will be even busier during January through March. Come to our next Council Business Meeting on December 9th at 7:00 pm in the Church Hall and find out in what program activity you would like to participate. COUNCIL HELPS ORGANIZE SCHOOL AND PARISH ANNUAL DRAWING For a number of years, Incarnation Catholic School (ICS) conducted an annual $100,000 or $50,000 drawing. Thanks to the wonderful support of the ICS families almost $143,000 was raised during the past five years. While this was very impressive, the net drawing proceeds decreased from $46,000 to $16,000 per year during the same period. Following last year s drawing, there were discussions about whether a different fundraising activity or format should be considered. Over the past three and half years, the Incarnation School Friday Night Bingo benefitted significantly through comanagement by the School and the Incarnation Council. During July- August, the School and Church leadership examined a proposal from the Council for the School and Church to have a drawing for a car as a major fundraiser. After much review, the School and Church leaders approved the car drawing fundraising event and accepted the KofC s offer of assistance to help manage it. It is anticipated that this will be an annual joint School and Church fundraising (C) Knights of Columbus Bee Ridge Road - Sarasota, Florida continued on page 8...

8 December 2014 Page 8 event. The decision was made that the drawing proceeds will be used to fund two important projects new information technology in the School and a new sound system in the Church. In past years, each ICS family received a minimum of five (5) $ tickets to sell $ worth. This year, each family will receive ten (10) booklets of tickets valued at $50.00 per booklet, or $ worth. Each booklet will contain five (5) tickets valued at $10.00 per ticket. Only 2,000 booklets will be printed. Each ICS family must sell a quota of least ten (10) booklets of tickets for this drawing. The 2015 Annual Drawing kick-off was held on October 25th 26th, when ICS families began selling their tickets after all the weekend Masses and during the Council s Monthly Pancake Breakfast. The Drawing s first place prize a 2015 Chrysler 200 Limited was on display on the Church Plaza. (See picture below.) The ICS families will have the opportunity to sell their tickets after various other weekend Masses; during the Council s Monthly Pancake Breakfasts; and before the Incarnation School Friday Night Bingo until the drawing date, which will be Sunday, April 26, 2015, during the Annual School Pasta Dinner and Drawing. In addition to one winner receiving a new car, there will be drawings for a second place winner (60 Flat Screen TV) and a third place winner (ipad Air). To assist the School and Church, Incarnation Council will also be selling the drawing tickets. Financial Secretary Charlie Culkin will have them available at all Council meetings and events. To help get the Annual Drawing implemented, three Incarnation Council Brothers Grand Knight Art Reilly, Warden Phil Riordan and Financial Secretary Charlie Culkin had a significant role. Brother Art developed the implementation plan and drafted the Official Rules and Regulations. Brother Phil arranged for the car and designed the tickets and getting them printed. Brother Charlie drafted the two letters sent to ICS parents and prepared the ticket distribution and control forms and various required financial reports. In addition, Brothers Art, Phil and Charlie will work with Incarnation School Principal, Dr. Ann Davis: School & Church Bookkeeper Barbara Duncan; and ICS Parent Mary Gaulrapp to manage this year s Drawing. Our School and Church is one parish community. Incarnation Council is part of the parish community. This joint fundraising event is an opportunity for our community to come together to support our shared needs. NEWS FROM SEMINARIAN SHAWN ROSER IN ROME For the past two and half years, our Council has provided financial and moral support to Seminarian Shawn Roser through the Knights of Columbus Refund Support Vocations Program (RSVP). The RSVP money is used by Seminarians for tuition and books and other living expenses. Knights write letters to the students, sponsor dinners for them, invite them to join the Order and, more importantly, pray for vocations. Shawn is a Knight of Columbus. 9 December 2014 Page 9 In June, Shawn graduated cum laude from St. John Vianney College in Miami with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and a minor in Theology. Shortly after his graduation, Bishop Frank Dewane sent Shawn to Rome, Italy to study at the Pontifical North American College for four years. Recently, Shawn sent us the following note: Dear Brother Knights, Another year of Seminary has begun, and I want to thank you so much for your kind support during these past years. You and your intentions were remembered in a special way at the Shrine of Our Lady of Knock in Ireland and at the grotto in Greccio, Italy where St. Francis created the first nativity set. You remain in my thoughts and prayers as I journey towards ordination! My best to all the parish family at Incarnation. God Bless, Seminarian Shawn Roser. COUNCIL WILL OPERATE NEW CONCESSION STAND DURING 15 SPRING TRAINING SEASON For the past three years, our Council and St. Thomas More Council #7826 have jointly operated a Seafood Stand at Ed Smith Stadium during the Baltimore Orioles Spring Training Baseball Seasons. The Seafood Stand was an unusual concession stand at Ed Smith Stadium. The stand served such items as Grilled Crab Cake and Grilled Salmon Cake Sandwiches as well as Soft Shell Crab, Grouper Bites, Fried Clam Strips, and Fried Shrimp Baskets, which include French Fries. In addition, the concession stand served the normal ball park fare of peanuts, candy, soda, bottled water and cold beer. Both Councils really enjoyed working this stand. In early November, Ball Park Director Charlie Culkin learned that another concession stand was available for the 2015 Spring Training Season. Like the Seafood Concession Stand it is located on the second level of Ed Smith Stadium. The stand requires the same staffing 10 people but the stand s menu is more like what you find a typical ball park hamburgers, cheese burgers, French fries, nachos, peanuts, pretzels and cold beer and soda. However, the significant difference between the two stands is the revenue generated. Last year, the Hamburger/Hot Dog Stand s revenues were $20,000 more than the Seafood Concession Stand s revenues. At Incarnation Council Business Meeting on November 11th and the St. Thomas More Council Business Meeting on November 13th, Ball Park Director Culkin presented the pros and cons of changing stands. He recommended that the Councils move to the Hamburger/Hot Dog Stand because it would increase each Council s net commission by an additional $1,000 with the same amount of staffing about $2,500 to $3,500 per Council. Each Council approved the recommendation. The pictures below show what our new Hamburger/Hot Dog Stand looks like: Front View of Hamburger & Hot Dog Concession Stand (C) Knights of Columbus Bee Ridge Road - Sarasota, Florida continued on page 10...
