How to Choose a Study As a group leader, choosing an engaging study for your group is important because each group has varying needs and interests. To help alleviate some of the pressure, we created this Resource Guide to simplify the process. Below are some guidelines to help you navigate the guide and choose a curriculum. New Groups (pg. 4) If you are launching a new group make sure you take time to get to know each other, have fun and balance content (curriculum) with community (developing relationships). In regard to launching your Group we recommend the following options below (see descriptions under New Groups section). Ask It: The Question That Will Revolutionize How You Make Decisions Sermon Discussion Questions (created weekly for groups) Community: Starting Well in Your Small Group What on Earth Am I Here For? Popular & Life Stage Studies (pgs ) We have included a wide range of popular and life stage studies, organized by topics and demographics (men s, women s, marrieds, etc.). As you take the pulse of your group s needs and interests consider doing one of the recommended popular studies that addresses a felt need or interest. Independent Study For leaders and participants that desire to delve into a particular category, topic, or book of the Bible, you are welcome to study something of your own choosing. We ask that you submit your choice on your groups profile and/or let us know before you begin. *Note Don t feel boxed in by the questions in the curriculum or the weeks specified for a study. Through preparation and prayer tailor the curriculum to the needs of your Group. Also, feel free to ask questions that s what we re here for! Foundations Pathway (pgs. 8-23) No matter how long your group has been meeting we would encourage you to go through our Foundations Pathway. It consists of 8 core sections that will deepen your Group s understanding of God s Word and its application to our lives. The Pathway is accessible to all groups. Within each section we have included General and Intermediate curriculum options. There is also freedom to go through the categories consecutively, take breaks, or change the sequence. 4 5

Foundations Pathway The Story of God The Bible s Grand Narrative At its core, the Bible tells the story of God s redemptive movement to restore His fallen creation. In this section you will become familiar with the major narrative movements in the Story of the Bible, and come away with a greater understanding and appreciation of the great lengths God has gone to reconcile creation (you) to Himself. INTERMEDIATE OPTION The Drama of Scripture: Finding Our Place in the Biblical Story by Craig G. Bartholomew & Michael W. Goheen (8 Weeks: Book) The Drama of Scripture surveys the grand narrative of Scripture. Using a metaphor from theatre, Bartholomew and Goheen present the biblical story in the form of a six-act play: Act 1, God Establishes his Kingdom (Creation); Act 2, Rebellion in the Kingdom (Fall); Act 3, The King Chooses Israel (Redemption Initiated); Act 4, The Coming of the King (Redemption Accomplished); Act 5, Spreading the News of the King (The Mission of the Church); Act 6, The Return of the King (Redemption Completed). A Brief Survey of the Bible: Discovering the Big Picture of God s Story from Genesis to Revelation by John Walton & Mark Strauss (12 Weeks: DVD Series, Study Guide) In A Brief Survey of the Bible, Walton and Strauss provide an overview of the Bible s key themes, show what its teachings meant to the original audiences, and explain how those teachings apply to your life today. You will come away with a greater understanding of Scripture, know how all of the books work together, and understand what God has done to make a way for you to come to him. 8 FURTHER STUDY: The Heart of God s Story: Know His Face, Thrive in His Space, Extend His Grace by George H. Guthrie (6 Weeks: DVD Series, Study Guide) Encountering the Old Testament: A Christian Survey by Bill T. Arnold & Bryan E. Beyer In The Heart of God s Story, Guthrie explores the beauty and power of God s unfolding story in Scripture, weaving the teaching around three key, interlocking themes from Genesis to Revelation: face, space, and grace. Face focuses on God s presence as the central theme of Scripture; space points to God s creating a place for us to walk with him and live for him in the world; grace refers to God s outward focus as he gives humanity a mission in the world. Encountering the New Testament: A Historical and Theological Survey by Elwell & R. W. Yarbrough 9

Foundations Pathway The Life of Christ It is an undisputed fact of history that Jesus of Nazareth was a real person. But who was Jesus, how do we interpret His deeds and sayings, and what significance do we attach to them? For Christians, Jesus is the Son of God incarnate, the messianic herald of the kingdom of God. In this section you will study the events of Jesus life, His teaching, and grasp the significance that Jesus attached to His own life and mission. INTERMEDIATE OPTION Four Portraits, One Jesus: A Survey of Jesus and the Gospels by Mark L. Strauss (15 Weeks: DVD Series, Book, Workbook) Four Portraits, One Jesus is a thorough yet accessible introduction to the four Gospels and their subject, the life and person of Jesus. Like different artists rendering the same subject using different styles and points of view, the Gospels paint four highly distinctive portraits of the same remarkable Jesus. Jesus: The Greatest Life of All by Charles R. Swindoll (10 Weeks: Book) In this fascinating biography, filled with biblical and historical insights, Swindoll takes you on an unforgettable journey through the complex and provocative life of Jesus of Nazareth: his unique birth, his astonishing power, his controversial teaching, his shocking death, and his world changing resurrection. Jesus the King: Exploring the Life and Death of the Son of God by Timothy Keller (9 Weeks: Book, Study Guide) FURTHER STUDY: Jesus and the Gospels: An Introduction and Survey by Craig L. Blomberg In Jesus the King, Keller explores the life of Christ as told in the Gospel of Mark, demonstrating that the story of Jesus is at once cosmic, historical, and personal, calling each of us to look anew at our relationship with God

Foundations Pathway Biblical Interpretation Tools for Understanding God s Word Interpreting the Bible is a challenging. Significant distance of time, geography, language, and culture exists between the ancient and modern worlds. In this section you will learn many valuable principles and methods of interpretation to develop a sound strategy, or hermeneutic, to interpret and understand the biblical texts and apply their truths to your life today? INTERMEDIATE OPTION Grasping God s Word: A Hand s on Approach to Reading, Interpreting, and Applying the Bible by J. Scott Duvall & J. Daniel Hays (10 Weeks: DVD Series, Book, Workbook) Grasping God s Word helps readers get a grip on the solid rock of Scripture how to read it, how to interpret it, and how to apply it by providing practical, hands-on exercises to guide readers through the interpretive process. How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth by Gordon D. Fee & Douglas Stuart (12 Weeks: Book) The Bible is meant to be comprehended by everyone. In How to Read the Bible for All its Worth, Fee and Stuart help readers accurately understand the different parts of the Bible their meaning for ancient audiences and their implications for today in order to uncover the inexhaustible worth that is God s Word. FURTHER STUDY: Read the Bible for Life: Your Guide to Understanding and Living God s Word by George H. Guthrie (9 Weeks: DVD Series, Book, Workbook) Introduction to Biblical Interpretation by William W. Klein, Craig L. Blomberg & Robert L. Hubbard Jr. (DVD Series) Read the Bible for Life equips believers to read the various types of biblical literature in a way that unlocks God s intended meaning, enabling them to accurately interpret the Bible and appropriately apply its teachings to life

Foundations Pathway Essential Doctrines At some point you may have heard it said theology matters, but what is theology? Early Christians used the term theology to mean talking about God. Alister McGrath states, to study theology is thus to think systematically about the fundamental ideas of Christianity. In this section you will learn about the essential, non-negotiable doctrines of the Christian faith, what they are, how they are formulated from Scripture, and how to explain them to others. INTERMEDIATE OPTION Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine by Wayne Grudem (15 Weeks: DVD Series, Book) The Christian church has a long tradition of systematic theology, that is, studying theology and doctrine in light of fairly standard theological and philosophical categories. In Systematic Theology, Grudem introduces systematic theology with clear teaching (technical terms are kept to a minimum) and provides a strong emphasis on the scriptural basis for each doctrine and teaching. Know What You Believe by Paul E. Little (10 Weeks: Book) In Know What You Believe, Little presents ten bottom-line, non-negotiable truths of Christianity using humorous, anecdotal illustrations gathered from years of experience helping believers share their faith with not-yet Christians. FURTHER STUDY: What Christians Ought to Believe: An Introduction to Christian Doctrine Through the Apostles Creed by Michael F. Bird (12 Weeks: Book) Christian Theology by Millard J. Erickson By bringing together theological commentary, tips for application, and memorable illustrations, What Christians Ought to Believe summarizes the basic tenets of the Christian faith using the Apostle s Creed as its entryway. After first emphasizing the importance of the creeds for the formation of the Christian faith, each chapter, following the Creed s outline, introduces the Father, the Son, and the Spirit, and the Church

Foundations Pathway The Gospel Becoming Fluent in the Good News The apostle Paul calls the gospel the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes (Romans 1:16). In this section you will learn how to become fluent in the power that is the gospel, to learn how to immerse yourself in its truths daily as a foundation for proclaiming it in word and deed to everyone you encounter. INTERMEDIATE OPTION The King Jesus Gospel: The Original Good News Revisited by Scot McKnight (10 Weeks: Book) The King Jesus Gospel stands on four arguments: the gospel is defined by the apostles in 1 Corinthians 15 as the completion of the story of Israel in the saving story of Jesus; this gospel is found in the four Gospels; this gospel was preached by Jesus; and the sermons in Acts are the best example of gospeling in the New Testament. McKnight ends with practical suggestions about evangelism and building a gospel culture vs. a salvation culture. Gospel Fluency: Speaking the Truths of Jesus into the Everyday Stuff of Life by Jeff Vanderstelt (8 Weeks: Book) To become fluent in a new language, you must immerse yourself in it until you actually start to think about life through it. In Gospel Fluency, Vanderstelt shows how becoming fluent in the gospel happens in the same way after believing it, you have to intentionally rehearse it (to yourself and to others) and immerse yourself in its truths. Only then will you start to see how everything in your life, from the mundane to the magnificent, is transformed by the hope of the gospel. Gospel Revolution: Recovering the Power that Made Christianity Revolutionary by J. D. Greear (8 Weeks: DVD Series, Leader Guide, Member Book) FURTHER STUDY: The Gospel in a Pluralist Society by Leslie Newbigin The Gospel Revolution helps participants to understand how to let the gospel work in their hearts in a way that religion never has or could, to learn how to abide in Jesus. They will find that when they do, passion, selfcontrol, kindness, patience, and generosity are the natural results. Marriages will change. Participants will be less selfish. Not by concentrating on these things, but as a result of being captivated by the love of Christ

Foundations Pathway Christian Disciplines Developing Rhythms for Life The word discipline can be off-putting. Yet, spiritual disciplines have always been central to the Christian life. They are not meant to be turned into a soul-killing checklist, rather they are practices and postures that bring about liberation from slavery to self, while facilitating growth into the likeness of Christ. In this section you will be exposed to the plethora of spiritual disciplines available in order to develop a rhythm to your spiritual life that is suited to your temperament and schedule. INTERMEDIATE OPTION The Spirit of the Disciplines: Understanding How God Changes Lives by Dallas Willard (12 Weeks: Book) In The Spirit of the Disciplines, Willard presents a way of living that enables ordinary men and women to enjoy the fruit of the Christian life. He reveals how the key to transformation resides in the practice of spiritual disciplines, and how their practice is integral to being a disciple of Jesus in thought and action as well as intention. Celebration of Discipline: The Path to Spiritual Growth by Richard J. Foster (12 Weeks: Book) In Celebration of Discipline, Foster explores the classic disciplines, or central spiritual practices, of the Christian life to show how each of these areas contribute to a balanced spiritual life. Spiritual Disciples Handbook: Practices That Transform Us by Adele Ahlberg Calhoun (12 Weeks: Book) FURTHER STUDY: Spiritual Classics: Selected Readings on the Twelve Spiritual Disciplines ed. by Richard J. Foster & Emilie Griffin Spiritual disciplines are for anyone who desires to know Christ deeply and be like him. While the word discipline may make us want to run and hide, Calhoun shows how desires and discipline work together to lead us to the transformation we re longing for the transformation only Christ can bring. The Spiritual Disciplines Handbook catalogs 75 disciplines and is full of practical accessible guidance that helps you actually practice them

Foundations Pathway The Mission of God Knowing Your Role Why does the Bible exist? The answer is, in short, to provide witness to the mission of God. God s mission entails bringing about the redemption and restoration of his wayward creation. As God s people, we have the privilege and responsibility of participating in God s mission. In this section you will gain an understanding of the nature and scope of God s mission, and be invited to consider how you can participate in God s mission in ways that are creative, holistic, and contextually appropriate to your time and place in history. INTERMEDIATE OPTION The Open Secret: An Introduction to the Theology of Mission by Leslie Newbigin (10 Weeks: Book) In The Open Secret, Newbigin describes the Christian mission as the declaration of an open secret open in that it is preached to all nations, secret in that it is manifest only to the eyes of faith. The result is a thoroughly biblical charge to the church to embrace its Christ-given task of presenting the gospel in a complex modern world Life on Mission: Joining the Everyday Mission of God by Dustin Willis & Aaron Coe (6 Weeks: Book) Life on Mission is a thorough yet simple guide for everyday missionaries electricians, lawyers, church planters, students, etc. that equips them with truths and practices for living out the gospel within their own community. FURTHER STUDY: The Mission of God s People: A Biblical Theology of the Church s Mission by Christopher J. H. Wright (14 Weeks: Book) The Mission of God: Unlocking the Bible s Grand Narrative by Christopher J. H. Wright The typical Christian understanding of missions encompasses only a small part of God s overarching mission for the world. God is relentlessly reclaiming the entire world for himself. In The Mission of God s People, Wright shows how God s big-picture plan directs the purpose of God s people, the church

Foundations Pathway Apologetics Defending Your Faith In 1 Peter 3:15, believers are instructed to, always be prepared to give a defense to anyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that is in you. The term that underlies defense is the Greek word apologia from which apologetics, the discipline of defending or providing proof of the truth of the Christian faith, is derived. In this section you will learn how to respond to the greatest objections to Christianity, yet do it with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:16). INTERMEDIATE OPTION Foundations of Apologetics by Ravi Zacharias, Michael Ramsden, John Lennox, Stuart McAllister et al. (12 Weeks: DVD Series) In Foundations of Apologetics, Ravi Zacharias International Ministries team of apologists introduce a comprehensive range of apologetic arguments and strategies. Viewers will become adept at recognizing the many worldviews influencing our culture, be equipped to challenge the assumptions of these worldviews, and cultivate the skills to communicate this newfound knowledge in a way that is winsome and effective. The Questions Christians Hope No One Will Ask: (With Answers) by Mark Mittelberg (10 Weeks: Book) Today, more than ever, people are raising difficult, penetrating questions about faith, God, and the Bible. In The Questions Christians Hope No One Will Ask, Mittelberg presents compelling, easy-to-grasp answers to ten of the most troubling questions facing Christianity today ranging from the existence of heaven, to the issues of abortion and homosexuality, to whether evolution eliminates our need for God. FURTHER STUDY: Christian Apologetics: A Comprehensive Case for Biblical Faith by Douglas Groothuis The Reason for God: Conversations on Faith and Life by Timothy Keller (6 Weeks: DVD Series, Book, Discussion Guide) In The Reason for God, Keller addresses the frequent doubts that skeptics and non-believers bring to religion. He brings together faith and intellect, theology and popular culture, and answers modern-day objections to historic Christian beliefs all to explain how the belief in a Christian God is, in fact, a sound and rational one

Popular & Demographic Studies POPULAR STUDIES CHRISTIAN LIVING: Who is This Man? by John Ortberg (5 Weeks: DVD Series, Book, Study Guide) In Who Is This Man? Ortberg illustrates how Jesus influence has swept over history and how his vision for us to lead lives of dignity, compassion, forgiveness, and hope continues to inspire and challenge humanity today. The Jesus Creed: Loving God, Loving Others by Scot McKnight (9 Weeks: Book) DISCIPLESHIP: When an expert in the law asked Jesus for the greatest commandment, Jesus responded with the Shema, the ancient Jewish creed that commands Israel to love God with heart, soul, mind, and strength, but he then amended the Shema, giving his followers a new creed for life: to love God with heart, soul, mind, and strength, but also to love others as themselves. In The Jesus Creed, McKnight explores how the Jesus Creed of love for God and others can transform your life. The Prodigal God: Recovering the Heart of the Christian Faith by Timothy Keller (6 Weeks: DVD Series, Book, Discussion Guide) In The Prodigal God, Keller uses the parable of the prodigal son to reveal an unexpected message of hope and salvation. Within this parable Jesus reveals God s prodigal grace toward both the irreligious and the moralistic, challenging both the devout and skeptics to see Christianity in a whole new way. 24 Christian: It s Not What You Think by Andy Stanley (8 Weeks: DVD Series, Participant Guide) What does it mean to be a Christian?
