1 V OLUME 20, ISSUE 6 J UNE/JULY, 2013 Good Tidings... Darnestown Presbyterian Church Hello All! Address: CHURCH INFORMATION Turkey Foot Road Darnestown, MD Phone: FAX: dpchurch@comcast.net Website: David R. McNeilly, Pastor Tamara Leonard Lara, Associate Pastor Michael Hooper, Director of Music Ministries/ Organist. Henry J. Postel, Pastor Emeritus This Pastor s Message is written on behalf of our Stewardship Committee. We ve been working on stewardship, even though it is not pledge time, and I have a request. Would you please consider remembering and blessing the future ministry of Darnestown Presbyterian Church by including your church in your estate planning? Of course such a step will have little impact upon our current ministry, but in the years ahead your gift might well come to DPC at a time when it is truly needed. Indeed, as the members of this church in the past have left us with a healthy church to worship and fellowship within today, so are we challenged to leave the future members of DPC with that same healthy and strong church. If you d like to prepare a bequest to DPC or would need guidance to so do, you are encouraged to be in touch with either me or the Chair of our Stewardship Committee, Dave Durham. Speaking for all who will be members of DPC in the years ahead, I thank you for considering such a gift! Blessings! Dr. John Andrews April 4, 2013 Mission News Leading up to Easter and through the month of April, DPC participated in the One Great Hour of Sharing collection. Half of the $2,379 we collected went to our denomination by way of the Presbytery. The other half was earmarked for Imara, a DPC-supported organization in Kenya that aims to empower Kenyan women through education to build a self-sufficient future for themselves, their children and their community. Imara is in the process of raising funds for a much -needed vehicle to help transport members of the household to and from doctors appointments, to run errands, and to pick up visitors. Imara is very thankful to DPC for the donation and will put it toward that cause. Imara board member Kathy Welliver recently returned from a visit to Imara and had this to say: We returned from Imara 3 weeks ago it was a fabulous trip. The girls and babies are so beautiful. We had a dedication that was attended by over 70 people of the community, plus some family members. There is such support there for what (Imara executive director) Carol is doing. Today a woman is coming over to do aerobic dancing with the girls. She will come every week. Also, another lady, a teacher, wants to help. God is amazing and DEFINITELY at work in this place. One can experience it on a daily basis!! There is nothing like Imara anywhere else. These people will never be the same after a trip there. The babies will warm their hearts with their sweet, innocent faces. We hope to post news and pictures from Imara on the Mission section of DPC s web site, so please visit the site for more information. You can also visit Also, a big thank you goes out to the members of DPC s Purl and Pray group, who are working on knitting and crocheting projects for Imara residents. Thank you!!! 5 V OLUME 20, I SSUE 6 Page 5 Our prayers are with you... Our hearts are just broken for the parents. Our prayers are with you. These words from Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin echo how many of us feel after a massive EF-5 tornado destroyed parts of Moore, Oklahoma, on May 20. Homes and businesses were stripped to their foundations by the powerful winds and schools caved in on the young children who took shelter along their hallways. In just 30 minutes, 24 lives were lost, including nine children; more than 200 people were injured; and hundreds more were left homeless. It is in these immediate hours and days that Oklahomans deeply need your prayers and financial support. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is there. PDA works directly with mid councils to ensure we re meeting the needs of the community. PDA also begins coordinating vital volunteer teams. It is in the weeks, months, and years that follow that PDA will remain. Now the heartland is hurting, but neighbors already are coming together, picking up the pieces, and moving forward. Will you stand in the GAP (Give/Act/Pray) to help communities recover from this devastating disaster? What You Can Do Donate now. Join the PC(USA) in its collective prayer. Register to become part of a volunteer work team. Learn more: get the PDA situation report and more information about the above at the website We ask that you stand in the GAP for those who are being affected by these devastating storms. GIVE: Even after the clouds have lifted, long-term challenges will face millions in Oklahoma; we ask that you prayerfully consider giving. Please make checks out to DPC and put DR USA Disasters and Emergencies on the memo line. You can give now by texting PDA to ACT: Call the PDA Call Center at (866) to register your volunteer work team's interest to help with the repair and rebuilding and for details on how to volunteer your team s skills for efforts on the ground. PRAY for individuals and communities affected by the storm. Consider using the prayer and worship resources available on line. Pray that the hope of Christ will be evident in our response. Graduates Congratulations! High School: Justin Fowler from Wootton HS; Grace Reichardt from Richard Montgomery HS; Hannah Theurer from Northwest HS; Alexi Worley from Poolesville HS. College: Bill Bremer, Chad Hoggle and Chelsea Hoggle, all from the University of South Carolina; Sean Gordon from Oberlin Conservatory, OH; Kelly Kurkjian from Syracuse University. Father s Day Wacky Tie Fellowship Event June 16 All men who join us at 10:00 a.m. in Fellowship Hall on the 16 th will be entered in a raffle to win a gift certificate which can be used to purchase tickets to a Nationals Baseball Game, Nationals mementos, or food at the game. If you wear a wacky tie, your name will be entered twice! Drawing will take place at 10:15 a.m., and you must be present to win. Our youth will provide refreshments.
