3 P AGE 3 Pastor s Ponderings Whether I like it our not, God is constantly teaching me lessons, challenging my perspective of things, or reminding me that I need a change of attitude. Quite honestly, some days I wish God would just quit it and leave me alone for a day or two. But God will be God, and knowing my ongoing need for learning a lesson or changing my perspective or my attitude, God is probably not going to give it up for a good long time. The latest challenge came when I learned that Maggie needs to start wearing glasses. We ve noticed that at times her right eye has been turning in, and so we took her to an ophthalmologist to have her eyes checked. The verdict was that we needed to put her in glasses to see if that would correct the problem. My immediate thought was something along the line of, No, no, NO! My adorable, just-turned-three-year-old with her beautiful blue eyes cannot have to wear glasses! Now, I do have the good sense to know that we have to do what is best for Maggie s vision, and that we can t just ignore the problem and refuse to put her in glasses because I don t like the way they are going to look. So the urge to refuse was short lived. But the grumbling and muttering to myself that it was an awful, horrible, unfair thing to have to do to my little cutie continued. I can t say that I m completely over it yet. But, probably because of God refusing to leave me alone, I have at least recognized it for what it is: a bad, foolish, vain, and ungrateful attitude. God has a way of encouraging us to see the greater reality beyond our narrow concerns or complaints. I m reminded of my sweet little great-niece, Ada Mae, who was born 4 months ago with a heart defect that has already resulted in two balloon procedures at Iowa City. Her parents are faced with a future of heart surgeries, medications, and the constant fear that there is no guarantee of a long and full life for her. And I think Maggie having to wear glasses is an awful thing?? I am reminded that many of you are bearing hurts and worries for yourself or a loved one that make my grumbling about glasses seem completely absurd. I am reminded that I have been given so much, and maybe I ought to look at all I have to be grateful for instead of getting in a snit because of something so insignificant as a pair of glasses. How does God put up with me? With us? God gives us so many amazing blessings, and we focus on what we think is wrong instead of all that is right. God gives me a beautiful, healthy little girl and I grumble because she has to go around with a bit of wire and plastic perched on her cute little nose. It s not just Maggie that has a problem with her vision, it s Maggie s mom, too. Sometimes I have trouble seeing all that God has given and all I have to be grateful for. I have trouble with my perception; I focus on petty, trivial problems instead of seeing the big picture, the wider view. Thankfully, God will continue to work on me. And on you, too, if need be. To open our eyes, to help us to see! Pastor Kathy A Prayer in Remembrance of 9/11/01 O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home! We bring before you our sad memories of our fellow citizens who lost their lives during the tragedy of September 11, We are yet pained when we consider lives ended by the heartlessness of those who believed they were achieving good, when unspeakable evil was the end result. Our hearts still cry when we recall the countless families who lost loved ones. Blessed Lord, please grant them an extra portion of your grace and comfort so they may find solace in their sorrow, alleviation in their distress, and light in their darkness. Enable us as citizens of our homeland to rededicate ourselves to supporting one another in concern and love. Stir us awake that we may offer help for the helpless, assurance for those who are losing hope, consolation for those who mourn and fair play for those who suffer injustice. Prevent us, O Lord, from calling America, one nation under God, and then do little to make it so. Thank you, blessed Creator, for hearing our prayers, for without that assurance, we would be hopeless indeed. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Tape Ministry The Membership Care and Outreach Committee offers cassette tapes of the worship services. If you are not presently on the distribution list and would like to obtain a copy of the tape weekly, contact Rod Kent at He generally delivers tapes on Mondays but other arrangements can be made if that doesn t fit into your schedule. Also, if you miss a service and would like a tape of a particular week, he will also be glad to get a copy of that tape to you. 4 P AGE 4 Bags DMARC s nine food pantries need paper grocery bags in good condition. The pantries reuse paper sacks for packing food items to be given out to those in need. Large quantities of these paper sacks are consumed in the process, and the need is ongoing. Purchasing paper grocery sacks is not possible due to cost, and therefore, recycling paper sacks for this purpose is our only option. If you have extra paper sacks, you can drop them off at DMARC or any of our nine pantry locations. Bidwell Riverside Center also needs plastic grocery bags. If you can help with these, please deliver them to Bidwell. Church Council met on Tuesday, Aug. 31. Following is a summary of the discussions held: Council Highlights Finance Committee is looking at fundraisers to help the budget. A Pampered Chef party is scheduled and Harvest Fair will be held on Oct. 2. The floor beneath the organ is bowing due to the weight of the organ. It will need to be reinforced when the pews are removed. A Narcotics Anonymous group is using Fellowship Hall on Saturday evenings, 6:15 to 8:30. Church events will come first. Parsonage basement had water. Only minor damage was incurred. Cloth diapers are needed for Ingathering. Memorial Funds paid for the new microphone system. Charge Conference will be held Oct. 26, at Easton Place UMC. Today There are two days in every week about which we should not worry. One is yesterday, with its mistakes and cares, its aches and pains. Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control. The other day is tomorrow, with its possible adversities and blunders. Until its sun rises we have no stake in tomorrow, for it is yet unborn. That leaves only one day today. Anyone can fight the battle of just one day. It is only when we add the burden of those two awful eternities: yesterday and tomorrow, that contentment will escape us. Financial Secretary Notes To receive credit, your designated offering donations (designated funds - food pantry, mission, Bidwell, Glimpses, Ingathering, Heifer, Special offerings, repair, trustees, youth) must be placed in the Sunday offering plate or mailed to the church office so it can be recorded in the giving records. If you give your donation directly to the person in charge of a specific designated fund program there is no way to tie your donation to your record and you will not receive credit for it. All checks need to be made payable to Ft. Des Moines United Methodist Church, not to the designated fund. Please don t forget your regularly scheduled giving when contributing to special designated offerings and specific project offerings. Memorial donations can be placed in the Sunday offering, mailed to the church, given at the funeral home or given directly to the family. Finance Report General Account Income $ 10, (Trash & Treasure Income $ 1,014.87) General Account Expenses $ 8, Needed each month: $ 13, Designated Funds Income: $ Trustees Income: $ NOTE: $4500 was borrowed from the Flower Garden Fund to cover the April expenses. No payments have been made on this loan. No apportionment payments have been made since May. Year-to-Date Total Income $ 82, Total Expenses $ 92, Well, Maybe She Had It Right C. Gray Norsworthy, a pastor in Atlanta, tells about a woman who prepared his worship bulletin for him but who did not have an extensive knowledge of church hymns. Pastor Norsworthy handed her a rough draft of the service hoping she could discern what he had written. When she handed him the finished bulletin to read, he notice the final hymn was listed as Just As I Am, Without a Clue. Without a clue or without a plea, whatever, we still need Jesus, don t we?
