1 A Word From Pastor Steve May 2016 As the Body of Christ we are called and sent to love and serve the world Oh, my! It s May already! Some updates, reminders, and answers to questions you may have. Pastor Terri is on sabbatical. The first three weeks are in Washington, D.C. at Gallaudet University for an immersion experience in American Sign Language. She returns from sabbatical and vacation on July 29. Please direct all pastoral care needs to me. Put my cell number in your cell phone. I hope you never need it in an emergency, but. (Cell: ). The Pastoral Transition Process is nearly completed. The final event is on May 1 at 12:15. Pastor Jeff Hawkins will be leading a workshop designed to invite conversation about Pastor Terri being a candidate for the senior pastor responsibilities. Please make an effort to be present. (It s going to be a rainy afternoon anyway!) The feedback regarding the Pastoral Transition Process has been very positive positive regarding the process that Pastor Jeff Hawkins has been facilitating as well as positive discussions about the assets, strengths, mission, and future of CtK. A congregational meeting will take place at 7 pm on Wednesday, May 25. (None of the Sundays in May seemed to be a good time. A potluck will get underway at 6 pm.) We will be electing a Call Committee to interview and then recommend a candidate for senior pastor. Pastor Terri has indicated her desire to be interviewed for the position, so she will be the first and only person interviewed. Bishop Bill will not provide the names of any other candidates for Contents Pastor s Reflection 1 consideration until CtK has decided whether or not to call Pastor Terri to the position. Mission Activity Calendar Lutheran Volunteer Corps Jamaica Boys Home Ascension / Passages Pentecost & Strawberries VBS / Flower Sale Blood Drive / WCC Lunch Bunch/Spring Work Cong. Noah Buchholz is here on May 22 and will preach at all three services as well as lead a short program following the 11 am service. Noah is a professor at Bethel College and travels the world leading presentations on Interpreting Scripture through a Deaf Lens. He is deaf and will have an interpreter with him that Sunday. Lunch will be provided thanks to the grant received for Pastor Terri s renewal/sabbatical time. TBD -- The date of my retirement has not yet been determined, but will be discerned once a call has been issued to a new senior pastor. The Synod Assembly for the Indiana-Kentucky Synod is at the Century Center in South Bend on June 9 through 11. You are invited to the opening worship on Thursday, June 9, at 8 pm at the Century Center. You are invited to participate in the choir for that worship service. Help also is needed by the IK Synod office staff in unloading on June 9 and loading on June 11. Call the church office if you can help. Congregational Meeting To Elect A Call Committee On Wednesday, May 25 at 7 pm A potluck will precede the meeting beginning at 6 pm On Friday, April 15, members of CtK's Alleluia Ringers travelled to Dayton, Ohio, for an overnight trip to the 2016 Area 5 Handbell Musicians of America conference and workshop. Those in attendance were Liz and Wayne Bell, Jane Darnell, Amy Dowd, Hillary Doerries, Elliott Smith, and Marilyn Wood. We had to prepare several pieces ahead of time to bring to the mass-ringing event, which involved just over 700 ringers and was directed by handbell guru and composer, Kevin McChesney. We were able to take classes in handbell ringing and movement, steel drumming, conducting, advanced handbell repertoire, networking for conductors, and some of us even went to a preview of next year's conference repertoire. Another highlight included a concert given by the Purdue Bells - a fantastic and talented group of student handbell ringers from Purdue University. The weekend culminated in a concert in the Dayton Conference Center which was free and open to the public. We also sampled some of Dayton's culinary offerings, including a spaghetti factory, an Irish pub, and Blind Bob's bar and grill. Some members of the group stayed an extra night in Dayton before heading back to the 'Bend, but this organist drove home on Saturday night to be back in time for Sunday services at CtK! - Submitted by Hillary Doerries, Director of Music Ministry

8 8 The King s Herald Christ the King Lutheran Church SPIRITUAL LIFE A NURSING HOME EXPERIENCE In March of 2008, I spent three weeks in a nursing home, following open heart surgery and preceding having both hips replaced. The care and the therapy given there were essential for my progress. Never having been in a nursing home, other than as a visitor, I didn t know what to expect, but I found the staff to be very capable and friendly. They apologized for putting me in a two-bed room, but they were so crowded that they had no choice. My roommate was an elderly woman in her early nineties who was in the early to middle stages of dementia. She was very sweet and endearing, a Catholic woman whose religion was very important to her. The doctors were working with her to determine the cause of her pain which would come and go. Several times during the night, I had to buzz for an aide, because my roommate was trying to get out of bed. She wasn t allowed to get up without assistance, because she had a tendency to fall. Other times, she would cry out for a pain pill and she couldn t find her buzzer; so, I would buzz for her. The aides never minded; they were always patient and kind with her. What I didn t realize until sometime after going home was that although I was awakened several times each night, I never felt exhausted or in need of a nap the next day. This was God s gift and blessing to me. He supplied my needs while I was meeting the needs of another of His children. Sometimes, my roommate had pain that was unbearable for her, but it wasn t time for her next medication. I would pray aloud for her - comforting and encouraging her, reminding her how much God loved her and how he was always with her. She was a great believer, and these words helped her; I felt so blessed to be able to serve her. She didn t know that the Catholic mass was televised, so I found it for her every day. She loved praying the rosary and hearing the homily. One day, Pastor Steve came to visit. He was wearing his collar, and my roommate s eyes lit up when she saw him. After visiting with me, he went over to speak to my roommate. She was very pleased, and she thanked the Father for stopping by. On the day that I left the nursing home, my roommate s family arrived from around the country. They were talking with her about what her next step might be. It was God s perfect timing. I will never forget this very precious lady. It was my greatest pleasure to minister to her; I know God sent me to be with her. I am so grateful to Him. It is the spirit in a man, the breath of the Almighty, which gives him understanding. (Job 32:8) It isn t the man, but the Spirit through the man. In His Name Diane Huwaldt Member of the Spiritual Life Committee
