1 ST. LOUIS CHURCH 23 rd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 6, 2009 Daily Mass Readings Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Next Sunday Is 35:4-7 Col 1:24--2:3 Mic 5:1-4 Col 3:1-11 Col 3: Tm 1:1-2, Ps 146:7-10 Ps 62:6-7, 9 Ps 13:6 Ps 145:2-3, Ps 150:1-6 Ps 16:1-2, 5, 7-8, 11 1 Tm 1:15-17 Is 50:4-9 Ps 113:1-7 Ps 116:1-6, 8-9 Jas 2:1-5 Jas 2:14-18 Mk 7:31-37 Lk 6:6-11 Mt 1:1-16, Lk 6:20-26 Lk 6:27-38 Lk 6:39-42 Lk 6:43-49 Mk 8:27-35 Lectio Divina While reading sacred scripture, read the words with a love and sense of discovery until something seems to strike home. Sit with the passage as one would with a good friend- not just thinking or analyzing, but instead remaining in a quiet, listening spirit, so the word can nurture and challenge you. Excerpts from SNOW FALLING ON SNOW Copyright 2001 by Robert J. Wicks Used with permission of Paulist Press Call to Prayer Let us take a moment in the midst of all our activity to prepare ourselves for prayer. The Word of God Choose one of next Sunday s readings. One person reads the scripture aloud as others are attentive to a word, phrase, or theme that is meaningful to them. Allow for a minute of silent reflection. Have another person read the same scripture a second time. Faith Sharing Begin with an open ended question such as What strikes you from this reading? and/or you can use the Reflection Question found on our website or bulletin. Allow time for reflection & sharing. Closing Prayer At the end of the faith sharing, invite participants to pray aloud for any particular petitions or praises they may have. Feel free to close with: The Lord s Prayer Spontaneous prayers or a faith-based song Reflection Question for September 13, 2009 Poor Peter! CD TITLE OF THE WEEK: Pure Freedom - Christina King: In this very unique presentation, Christina King, mother of seven, shares in a powerful way the beauty of the Sacraments and how through them the virtue of chastity and the discipline of abstinence can save not only the body, but especially the soul. She has spoken to thousands of teens, empowering them to see the incredible and special plan God has for them in their lives. She connects so well with teens! Sometimes you can hear a pin drop, and other times they are laughing out loud! Roberta - Alberta, Canada There are so many mistakes in my past that I could have avoided if only I d heard this message when I was in high school. Jeff - Steubenville, OH Look for this inspirational CD in the Kiosk in the Narthex. A contribution of $3 is requested for each CD and $0.50 for each brochure. GARDEN CLUB: The first meeting of the St. Louis Garden Club will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2009, at 9:30am, in the St. Louis Church Pastoral Center. A Mass, to celebrate the club's 25th anniversary, will be offered beforehand at 8:30am in church Chapel. Master Gardener, JoAnn Russo, will present a program on Fall Vegetable Gardening. Dues ($20.00) will be collected and members will register for our October trip to the Franciscan Monastery downtown and lunch at a French restaurant. The garden club meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month from September - August. New members are always welcome. For further information, call Kay Bair at Fr. Dominique s presentation: The Shack, an evening of theological exploration is now available on CD at the welcome table (and at the parish office). The $10.00 donation (for the 2 CD set) will go towards the ACTS retreats. RESPECT LIFE Health Care and the Common Good: In a recent British Catholic Journal an editorial titled U.S. bishops must back Obama claimed that America s bishops have so far concentrated on a specifically Catholic issue-making sure state-funded health care does not include abortion-rather than the more general principle of the common good. Archbishop Charles Chaput, O.F.M. Cap wrote the following in reference to the article,. No system that allows or helps fund no matter how subtly or indirectly the killing of unborn children, or discrimination against the elderly and persons with special needs, can bill itself as common ground. Doing so is a lie.. Health-care reform is vital. That s why America s bishops have supported it so vigorously for decades. They still do. But fasttracking a flawed, complex effort this fall, in the face of so many growing and serious concerns, is bad policy. It s not only imprudent; it s also dangerous. As Sioux City s Bishop R. Walker Nickless wrote last week, no health-care reform is better than the wrong sort of health-care reform.

6 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Have you registered yet? Please visit us at for a schedule of classes being offered, our calendar and also to download a registration form for your family. Information specific to Wee Praise can be found at Catechetical Sunday Catechesis aims to put people not only in touch but in communion, in intimacy, with Jesus Christ. (National Directory for Catechesis, no. 19B) On Sunday, September 20 th St. Louis will join parishes throughout our diocese and country to celebrate Catechetical Sunday. Catechetical Sunday reminds each of us that in Baptism we are charged with the responsibility of handing on and witnessing to our faith in all we do. Our catechetical programs help us to fulfill that responsibility by presenting our faith in a systematic way. During the 9:30 Mass on September 20 th, we will recognize and bless the many adults and youth who volunteer in catechetical ministries. We will also recognize the role parents and guardians play in handing on the faith to their children. As this new catechetical year begins, remember to pray for and thank our catechists for all they do to share the light of faith with the children, youth and adults in our parish. Did you know the term CCD is no longer used? Formal faith formation classes are simply referred to as Religious Education Classes. Important Dates: September 16: First WIRED Class - 7:30pm September 19: First ACT NOW Class - 11:00am September 20: Catechetical Sunday - 9:30 Mass September 21: Opening Catechist Meeting - 6:30pm September 27: First EDGE Class 9:30am October 3: First Saturday Religious Ed. Class (grades K-5) October 4: First WEE PRAISE Class - 9:30 Mass October 4: Faith in the Family Mandatory Parent Meeting 2:00-3:00pm October 5: First Monday Religious Ed. Class (grades 6-10) First Reconciliation/First Eucharist Preparation: Few experiences in the religious education of children are as meaningful & rewarding as helping them to prepare to celebrate the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. The Canon Law of the Church and the regulations of the Archdiocese of Baltimore state that as children reach the age of discretion (about 7 for most children), they are to be invited to prepare for these two sacraments. Children are also to be enrolled in a formal religious education program in a parish or catholic school at least one year before beginning preparation for these sacraments. Informational letters will be mailed home to all 2 nd grade students whose family is registered at St. Louis and who are currently registered in our religious education program or enrolled in St. Louis School. If your child attends Woodmont Academy or Trinity School & you feel they are eligible to begin their sacramental preparation, or if you feel you should receive a letter and do not, please call the Office of Religious Education at (410) The dates and times for the upcoming Parent/Child meetings for First Penance Preparation are as follows: Wednesday, October 14: Wednesday, October, 21: 5:00pm OR 7:00pm in Howard Bishop 7:00pm in Howard Bishop Parents, please note, it is not necessary to sign up ahead of time for one of the meetings. You simply attend just one of the meetings listed above. Please also remember that this meeting is for parents and the child who will be preparing to receive First Reconciliation. YOUTH DIRECTOR S COMMENTS YOUTH DIRECTOR S COMMENTS: Labor Day Weekend I have always wondered why we take off on a holiday to celebrate work! I guess it has something to do with the Creation story and resting on the 7 th day like God did, but maybe it s just an excuse to have barbecues! Anyway, I ll be out of town and thinking about work as I drink lemonade on the edge of some pool. How about you? With balance, work can do many things for us. It can provide security (money), discipline (6am is not my favorite time but sometimes important!), an outlet for talents and energy, and a sense of community (if you are working at a place like St. Louis!). But, sometimes, we allow work or what we do in general to define us. If you are at a party, chances are you ll introduce yourself as someone who goes to a particular school or works at a particular place. What we do is important because we are called to use the gifts that God has given to us, but it should not be how we judge our worth. We are God s children, loved by the Trinity and saved by His unconditional love just because God loves us! I LL BE PRAYING FOR ALL OF YOU. MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL CATHOLIC YOUTH MINISTRY: September 6 & 8 Confirmation Classes Begin September 9: Monday Catechist & Mentor Trainings 7pm Sept. 11: MS Dance 7-10pm Sept. 15: Middle School CYM Youth Council 6-7pm Youth Room Sept. 20: Lunches to the Homeless Deadline: September 13 YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY Bible Study returns Wednesday, September 9th! Join us in Room 305 of the Pastoral Center at 7:30 PM. The monthly Holy Hour with Praise and Worship will be September 11 at 7:00pm in the chapel. As always we will be going out afterward for food and fellowship. Hope you can join us!
