Perhaps you experienced one of those years when you found the right tree, but then you looked at each other and realized that no one remembered to bring a saw. As a result you borrowed one or had to come back later in the day with the one you forgot. When you consider how much time and energy we give to selecting a tree and then decorating it there is a lot of effort that is involved. All of that reminds me that in order for our Christmas to be meaningful our heavenly Father also had to pay attention to detail. God s ultimate plan was that his Son would give his life on the Perfect Tree for all of us. That tree was perfect only because Jesus the lamb of God occupied it in order to erase the penalty of our sin. Therefore as you celebrate Christmas around that Perfect Tree remember the following: 1.) That tree is emblematic of the cross of Calvary where the infant Jesus would become the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. 2.) That tree can be for you and your family a point of connection regarding Gods plan of salvation or merely a place for present placement as you celebrate the commercial aspects of Christmas. 3) Placing the scriptures under the tree and reading about Jesus birth, death and resurrection on Christmas morning will help to preserve the truth of Christmas and the miracle of incarnation 4.) As you put the lights on your tree may they remind you of Jesus, the light of the world, who came to shut out darkness in your life and mine. 5.) When you put your special ornaments on the tree may the round balls remind you that Jesus came to bring God s love to the world. John 3:16 God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whoever would believe in him would not perish but have eternal life. So as you anticipate Christmas, look for the sights and symbols that God places in your pathway to celebrate the coming of His son Jesus Christ our Lord. It's also a time to reach out to others less fortunate and provide a love gift from someone who cares. This year we will be giving gifts to needy children of The Village in Rosemont, PA. The Christmas tree in the narthex is filled with red hearts. Please help by taking a heart from the Christmas tree, purchase the gift and place the gift UNWRAPPED under the tree by Sunday, December 11th. If you have any questions please contact Gayle Martell at Mission of the Month Jon & Cindi Hampshire Wycliffe Bible Translators PO Box Orlando, FL jon-cindi_hampshire@sil.org Jon and Cindi Hampshire are starting their 29th year with Wycliffe Bible Translators. After their initial Bible translation training and language learning they lived in Africa for 17 years, supporting the Bible translation task in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and in Kenya. They moved back to the US in 2009 to work in the home office of Wycliffe Bible Translators USA in Orlando, FL. Jon has redirected his focus back to Africa and he is once again involved in the work of Bible translation that is taking place in the DRC. Jon now serves as the Associate Director and the Communications Coordinator for the work in the DRC. Cindi works in Wycliffe USA s Strategic Prayer and Partnerships Department. Jon and Cindi have four children: Kelsie, who is married to Ben Goller and their son Caleb live in Longview, TX where they work at LeTourneau University. Kristy works as an Executive Assistant at Heritage International School in Kampala, Uganda. Andrew is a junior at Columbia International University in SC preparing to serve on the mission field. And Alec is a senior at Lake Nona High School and plans to join a branch of the military after graduation next year. Fellowship Events: Save the dates and join us for the upcoming events! The Philadelphia Orchestra - Glorious Sounds of Christmas Saturday, December 17th at 7:00 PM at the Kimmel Center. The price is $35.00 per ticket and we have a limited number of tickets. Please sign up in the narthex to reserve a ticket and indicate if you would like to participate in a group dinner beforehand at Fado Irish Pub. We will be carpooling for this event. Payment is due by 12/10. 3 PAGE 3 Room at the Inn This December, Supplee Presbyterian Church, Maple Glen Bible Fellowship, and Sanctuary United Methodist Church will be teaming up to serve our brothers and sisters who are in need. Please consider sharing God's abundant love for us to others by providing transportation, providing a meal, or providing overnights for families from the Interfaith Housing Alliance. Our core team of organizers understands how busy everyone is this time of year, but we know that the holy spirit will call upon us to serve. It is a blessing for us to be able to assist these families throughout the Christmas season. Following the singing, the group will return to church for hot cider, hot chocolate and a simple fellowship meal. Adults, children, teens, and anyone who likes to sing and eat are invited to attend. 4 THE SUPPLEMENT PAGE 4 Adult Education Classes - Sundays at 10:45 a.m. The Meaning of Advent Facilitated by Don Hoagland the Crossroads Center Pastor Don s class is a video and then discussion on the meaning of Advent and the meaning of Christmas. Being a Christ-Like Christian: The Gospel of Matthew Led by Jay Eibner and Russ Hensel, Fellowship Hall What does it mean to be a Christian? In 21 st century America, that question can provoke a lot of different answers. The lines between religion, politics, and entertainment are becoming blurred, and many Americans simply don't realize what Jesus taught, how his teachings have impacted our culture, and the implications his teachings should have on our lives. Of all the books in the Bible, Matthew's Gospel provides the best Exposition of the works and especially the teachings of Christ. Matthew described Jesus as the Doer and the Teacher. He recorded at least twenty specific miracles and six major messages: the Sermon on the Mount (chaps. 5-7), the charge to the apostles (chap. 10), the parables of the kingdom (chap. 13), the lesson on forgiveness (chap. 18), the denunciation of the Pharisees (chap. 23), and the prophetic discourse on the Mount of Olives (chaps ). At least 60 percent of this book focuses on the teachings of Jesus. Join us for our study of this great book. You're sure to gain new insights into what it really means to be a Christian, what the Lord expects of you, and how the light of Christ can shine through you to make the world a better and brighter place. What Makes You Happy Led by Chuck Wormington, Jan Wormington and Clay Fredrick in the Parlor What Makes You Happy? Everybody wants to be happy. For many, happiness is measured in moments, experiences. It s elusive. Unsustainable. What makes you happy? Not sure? In this 6-part study, Andy Stanley explores three things that all happy people have in common. Then he explains how these three things can be realities. After his DVD presentation, we will be discussing how we can apply these principles in our lives. 5 THE SUPPLEMENT PAGE 5 Women s Association News by Roberta Robinson, Bazaar Chairperson I am writing this article on Sunday, the day after the bazaar, so there has been little time to collect everybody s thoughts and ascertain how much money we made. But I can tell you this; the 2016 bazaar was a huge success by every measure. Good publicity brought in more customers, and the quantity and quality of what we had to offer them was outstanding. Kids enjoyed the face painting and cookie decorating. New for this year was the kid s game room which drew young families and made the bazaar experience even more fun for the children. Again we welcomed Santa and his photographer/gingerbread house-maker, sidekick, Jane. Sloppy joe/coleslaw platters served in the café Friday night, kept everybody well-fed. And what can I say about the desserts! If you could settle for just one, I admire your restraint. John Bethard and John Manger worked in the kitchen Friday and Saturday by cooking and transporting food to the café, and washing up. Thanks to Nancy Manger for coordinating the café and baking for days. Good job, Miriam Circle! Sixty-four awesome baskets were donated from many sources to the delight of people who were happy to acquire one or more of them. Susan Shinton and Pam Kraske did all the pricing, inventory, sales, and distribution. The craft group worked all year to bring you a variety of gift and décor items from which to choose. Check out the library thru Dec. 11 th if you missed the main event. Thanks to the Elizabeth Circle for making all the telephone calls soliciting donations to the bake table. If you are looking for a way to contribute to the bazaar next year, bake something for us. Everybody loves home-baked goodies, even yours! Many people stepped up into leadership roles and got all the jobs done efficiently. Women s Association Chairperson, Jenn McKnight helped in countless ways. Bob Lee was everywhere setting up, taking down, and everything in between. The Boy Scouts worked hard setting up for attic treasures last Sunday, and helping with clean-up. The same goes for the men and breakaway youth who helped in all phases. Suzanne Hessenthaler and Barbara Freeston kept the accounts straight. Donations to attic treasures were extra nice this year, and were well displayed. Having Christmas items in the hall was a nice departure. The office staff gave their behind-thescenes help in many ways and we appreciate that too. We made some innovations and changes this year to keep things interesting. Who knows what we ll come up with next year! The Women s Association Board will be deciding how to disburse money to fund the many causes we support, using the profits from the bazaar our only source of income. We thank you all for your participation and support. Many people are unnamed, but, not unappreciated. As of today, there are 42 days until Christmas, how about that! Bazaar Crafts - are on sale in the church library, now through December 11. Stop by to pick up gifts and stocking stuffers! Please pay in the church office. Women s Retreat Reserve your spot today! In January we will return to Ocean City, New Jersey for our annual Women s Retreat (note the later than usual date, January 20-22, 2017). The theme of the weekend is Joy and we will use a video series by Kay Warren. Mark the date on your calendar now so you won t miss a great time of spiritual refreshment, fun and good food. 6 THE SUPPLEMENT PAGE 6 Notes From Breakaway Youth by Evan Lehman One Sunday in November the youth group went paintballing. The afternoon really was a great time. After Sunday school we all shared lunch together. There is definitely something positive about breaking bread together as a group. Any event where the youth group eats together always seems to go well. When we were done eating we packed up and headed over to Out Door Extreme. Upon arriving they had us go through safety training before giving us equipment and dividing into teams. Out on the course they had several different areas we could play in and we rotated between them. There was matches where we were down in wooded areas and others where they had built buildings and castles. We were able to play different games like elimination and capture the flag. All of the kids really enjoyed themselves. It is amazing how competition and games can really bring a group together. Part of the goal of youth group is having a sense of belonging and identity in the church. Events where we go away and share an experience together are the events that best bring the kids together. When they are enjoying life as a group they are living and experiencing the gospel and positive relationships. It truly is wonderful to see God use a silly event like paintball for His glory. We met every Monday at 7:30pm for rank advancements, merit badge classes, troop-wide competitions, and more. Near the start of the month, our Troop went on its annual backpacking trip. This year s trip took us to Thunder Swamp Trail, less than a mile away from where our summer camp, Resica Falls Scout Reservation, is situated. There were two crews that went hiking, one for experienced hikers, and the other for novice hikers. To sum it up, it was a scenic tour hiking through the forests and along the Bushkill Creek. On October 22nd, our Troop held its 3rd annual Troop 542 Trail Run at Fort Washington State Park. We had an entire parking lot full of runners participate in this event: runners, joggers, and walkers. Once people finished the 5k trail run, they were treated to snacks and beverages. Prizes were awarded to the fastest of each age group as well as overall winner. Just two days later, we had our annual canned food drive competition, called the Can-Struction. Basically, patrols were asked to bring in as many cans as possible and to use them all to build a 3D structure designed to impress others (as well as the judges). The reward for the winning patrol, The Eagle Patrol, will be a hot meal cooked by the adults on the November camping trip. Not far behind were the Shark and Lightning Patrols. Nearly 2,000 food items were donated as a result of Can-Struction having taken place. Our Troop is still collecting cans, hopeful of shattering our previous record of 5,885 food items. Near the end of the month, our Troop took a trip to Elk Neck Park, where the main event was an orienteering competition. We also had the privilege of visiting Turkey Point Lighthouse while younger scouts earned Tote-N-Chip cards allowing them to use the tools in our axe yard. Overall, October has been both a busy and exciting month for our Troop. Boy Scout Troop 542 meets at Supplee Church every Monday during the school year at 7:30PM and has fun and exciting outdoor activities every month. Check out our web site or contact Scoutmaster Jay Eibner if you re interested. Boys who have finished 5th grade and are not yet 18 are eligible to join.

7 PAGE 7 News from the Nursery School by Karen Kohler Is there any month of the year more exciting than December when your age is still in the single digits? We are very reverent as we hear of the birth of Baby Jesus, of the angels and wise men. We are amazed to hear of the promise of mounds of snow and long, slender icicles that are expected with the upcoming season. And we are just over-the-moon excited about the big man in the red suit! The 2-3 s enjoy making decorations for the trees and windows, they love Reindeer Day (did you ever dance the Reindeer Hokey Pokey??) and we love singing our Christmas and Winter Carols. Now, if we just have the inclination to sing them when the parents are here to listen! Our 3-4 s start the Christmas unit as they paint a stencil of Baby Jesus in the manger, adding a new star to Bethlehem s sky each night until Christmas Eve our Advent Calendar. We bake the most delicious Gingerbread boy and girl cookies (and we hope they don t run away like in the book!) We will hear a story of Christmas read by Even Lehman, Supplee s Student Ministry Director, and we will make a sweet (and topsecret) gift for our parents! Our Pre-K children have already started to create our parents gifts, will carefully count down the days to Christmas with the Advent Calendars we have made, will bake and practice our songs, ending 2016 with a wonderful concert for our parents! 9 PAGE 8 Stewardship and Finance News Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee This beautiful hymn is the theme of our 2017 Stewardship Campaign. As we sing, we express joy and give thanks to God for His Lovingkindness, Redemption and Compassion in our lives. Let this inspire us to look upwards in praise and be prompted to identify all the blessings He has provided in our lives. Our 2017 Stewardship Pledge Campaign is off to a good start as we have received a decent amount of Pledge Cards in the past 2 weeks. Pledge cards are due by December 4th. Please consider increasing your pledge for If you have never pledged, please start with an appropriate amount for For 2016, October was a good month for contributions bringing us up to the same level of giving as This sounds good but we need to be reminded that 2015 ended up with a shortfall. Our expenses are lower than 2015, but the only way to avoid a 2016 shortfall is for us to give more than ever in November and December. A scrapbook day will be held at Supplee Church in Fellowship Hall on Saturday, February 4 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There is no charge for this event and is open to our Church family and friends. So if you have a friend that does scrapbooking, bring them along. Come share ideas. Tools will be on hand for you to borrow. (e.g. paper cutters, punches a Cricut and cartridges). Join when you can and leave when you choose or bring a lunch and stay all day. The Deacons Need Your Help - Food for friends has been very busy this year assisting members of our church family by providing meals. Food for friends provides meals to church members in need, i.e. following surgery, sick or after a new baby is born. We need more volunteers willing to make and deliver a meal. We have been using an on-line service called Mealtrain, an is sent out with all the details regarding who the meals are for, when to deliver and any special dietary needs. You must sign up on Mealtrain then you can pick a day to help. reminders are sent out prior to each date. Please Pam Sands at pes57@msn.com or there will be a sign up sheet in the narthex. Prayer Shawls Available If anyone would like a prayer shawl to give to someone in need, please contact Toni Hagendorf at Deacons' Flower Fund News Donations to Help Decorate the Church Once again the Deacons will be decorating our sanctuary for the celebration of Christ's birth. You can help by making a donation that can be designated for either the decorations or for the needy. Please make your check payable to "Supplee Church" and place it in one of the special envelopes that are on the cabinet in the Narthex. To designate your donation in memory of or in honor of a loved one (in the Christmas bulletin insert) complete the appropriate section of the envelope and return to the church office by Sunday, December 18th. Sanctuary Flowers The Deacons want to thank all who have provided flowers for our chancel and communion table throughout this year. Your contributions toward this fund allow us to bring color and sunshine into the lives of our sick and shut-in church members, as well as to beautify the sanctuary for our worship services. The flower chart for 2016 is on the bulletin board in the hallway leading out of the narthex. When you would like to donate flowers, please sign next to the date, choosing chancel (listed first) or communion table. There will be only chancel flowers on communion Sundays (the first Sunday of the month). At the same time, please pick up a flower envelope (at the bottom of the chart) and fill it out. When doing so, be sure to check whether or not you will take the flowers and also include your dedication information. The cost of chancel flowers are $40; a communion table arrangement is $20. Card Care Connection Each month we select members to receive greetings from the Supplee Church family. These are people who are temporarily unable or no longer able to attend church. This is an opportunity for us to let them know we think of them and miss their fellowship. You do not have to know the person to send them greetings.
