Today's Gospel continues Jesus' Bread of Life discourse where he emphasizes over and over again that his followers are to "eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood." Not surprisingly, his listeners don't know what to make of this mysterious teaching. So the quarrels begin. We can imagine what was being said: "He's just using analogies," one man would suggest. "No! He says it's 'true food' and 'true drink,'" another would reply. Others would accuse Jesus of blaspheming, while still others would assert that they believe every word he says. And so it went. This scene is all too common. People encounter a difficult teaching of the faith--one that is challenging to fulfill or difficult to believe--and so they argue about it or rationalize it away instead of just accepting it and living according to it. On a large scale, these sorts of arguments are what lead to the breakdown of Christian unity. Time and time again in history, when a group of people disagrees about a Christian teaching, they splinter off and define their own set of beliefs. Not only does this harm the harmony of the Christian community, but it makes it too easy to avoid the tough parts of the faith. Some of the things Jesus wants us to do are difficult--like respecting God's plan for sexuality or controlling our urges for unrestrained pleasure, power, or profit. Some of the things Jesus taught us are mysterious--like the teaching that the Eucharist is truly his body and blood. But thankfully he has given us his Holy Spirit to help us understand and do what we should. Let's not waste our time arguing about the faith. Let's just live it. So, if you know of a new family, please ask them to join our St. Columba Family! We are excited to welcome all our new and returning families. We have a few but limited opening on certain grades. Please tell them to contact us through Lera Rickling at our school office or ricklingl@stccatholic.org. Our school office is open for most of the summer to be at your service. We are also reviewing and updating our academic and school programs to move forward with our Advancement Programs. We will keep you updated with current development in this area. We are also on the final process of completing our faculty and staff. We are excited to introduce our new teachers and welcome back our faculty and staff. In behalf, of our pastor, Father Gary, our faculty and staff, students and parents, let me take this time to express our gratitude and appreciation for all your prayers and support for the past year. I encourage you to be counted and be an active participant in all the upcoming school programs and events. We will keep you updated and current with what s happening in your school community. THE FEAST OF THE QUEENSHIP OF MARY A Celebration of the Queenship in Our Lives All are invited to celebrate Our Blessed Mother calling of Her Beloved Children to gather and celebrate her Queenship in our lives on Saturday, August 22. My Dear Parishioners, As everyone knows, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, is scheduled to celebrate a Papal Mass on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at 4:15 p.m. at the Basilica National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception inside and outside along the grounds of the Catholic University. St. Columba Church is allotted a very limited number of tickets and attendance is by ticket availability only. Therefore I would thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding if you could submit a request in writing, delivered to the rectory or by . In your request, please describe your stewardship and/or involvement at St. Columba Parish. Please note that there is only one ticket per request so if a couple is requesting tickets, we will need two separate letter requests. 5 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 16, 2015 UPDATES OF ST. COLUMBA CHURCH BUILDING PROJECT FROM THE PASTOR The proposed building construction of parish restrooms, rectory guestroom and parish office audio-visual room is still ongoing. We have received so far around $200,000 for our projects and once we break ground for the restroom construction, we will continue to raise the remaining $250,000 for the whole projects. I also formed a committee for these projects and they are Hedy and Graham Thomas chairpersons Mary Brennan member Damien Downing member Efren Sebastian - member The Special Project has been approved by Cardinal Wuerl. The special project projection to start is on September. I would like to thank all of you who supported and have donated to these projects. May God bless you for your generosity. CATECHISM IN A YEAR Day To what extent are all men equal in God's sight? // Why is there injustice among men? To what extent are all men equal in God's sight? All men are equal in God's sight insofar as all have the same Creator, all were created in the same image of God with a rational soul, and all have the same Redeemer. Because all men are equal in God's sight, every person possesses the same dignity and has a claim to the same human rights. Hence every kind of social, racist, sexist, cultural, or religious discrimination against a person is an unacceptable injustice. Why is there nevertheless injustice among men? All men have the same dignity, but not all of them meet with the same living conditions. In cases where injustice is man-made, it contradicts the Gospel. In cases where men have been endowed by God with different gifts and talents, God is asking us to rely on one another: in charity one should make up for what the other lacks. There is a kind of inequality among men that does not come from God but rather originates in societal conditions, especially in the unjust distribution of raw materials, land, and capital worldwide. God expects us to remove from the world everything that is plainly contrary to the Gospel and disregards human dignity. Yet there is another sort of inequality among men that is quite in keeping with God's will: inequality in talents, initial conditions, and opportunities. These are an indication that being human means being there for others in charity so as to share and to promote life.
