Left Paul, Barnabas, and John Mark in Paphos with Sergius Paulus getting saved, him and all his household, even with Elymas fighting against the Gospel the whole time. 13 Now when Paul and his party set sail from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia; and John, departing from them, returned to Jerusalem. Paul and his party From this point on, Paul s leadership and prominence will be evident. Perga northwest of Cyprus in modern day Turkey John, departing from them, returned to Jerusalem : We don t know exactly why John Mark went home to Jerusalem. In Acts 15:36 41, Paul wasn t thrilled that John Mark went home, and lost confidence in him as a missionary partner. 14 But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and sat down. Perga was a sea town a harbor city Antioch in Pisidia was about 135 miles inland, to the north, it was located in the mountains at an altitude of about 3,600 feet. In the province of Galatia Galatians 4:13 NLT Surely you remember that I was sick when I first brought you the Good News of Christ.14 But even though my sickness was revolting to you, you did not reject me and turn me away. No, you took me in and cared for me as though I were an angel from God or even Christ Jesus himself. Paul got very sick (Malaria) and It apparently damaged his eyesight. Galatians 4:15 What then has become of the blessing you felt? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have gouged out your eyes and given them to me. To get to it Paul and Barnabas would have to cross the Taurus range of mountains by one of the hardest roads in Asia Minor. 2 Corinthians 11:26 NLT I have traveled many weary miles. I have faced danger from flooded rivers and from robbers. 15 And after the reading of the Law and the Prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying, Men and brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say on. 1 of 7

A synagogue service generally went like this: Opening prayers, a reading from the Law (the first five books of the Old Testament), and a reading from the Prophets. Then, if there was an educated person present, they were invited to speak on subjects related to the readings. 16 Then Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen: Paul jumped at the opportunity to share the Gospel from God s Word. Paul used this open door regularly to preach Jesus Christ the messiah crucified and rose again on the third day. Paul begins his sermon not a novice years since conversion 17 The God of this people Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm He brought them out of it. 18 Now for a time of about forty years He put up with their ways in the wilderness. 19 And when He had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He distributed their land to them by allotment. 20 After that He gave them judges for about four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet. 21 And afterward they asked for a king; so God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22 And when He had removed him, He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will. 23 From this man s seed, according to the promise, God raised up for Israel a Savior Jesus The survey of Israel s history demonstrates that God has a plan for history, and that despite the performance of His chosen people He will fulfill His promises. (Like Stephen the message the changed Paul s life) God has a track record of being faithful to His promise and full of Grace. 24 after John had first preached, before His coming, the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25 And as John was finishing his course, he said, Who do you think I am? I am not He. But behold, there comes One after me, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to loose. 26 Men and brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you who fear God, to you the word of this salvation has been sent. 27 For those who dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they did not know Him, nor even the voices of the Prophets which are read every Sabbath, have fulfilled them in condemning Him. 28 And though they found no cause for death in Him, they asked Pilate that He should be put to death. 29 Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb. Only two real responses to Jesus are worship or rejection. 2 of 7

In calling the cross a tree, Paul drew on the idea from Deuteronomy 21: In that passage, it says that God curses a person who is hanged from a tree. Paul wanted to communicate the idea that Jesus was cursed so that we could be blessed (Galatians 3:13). 30 But God raised Him from the dead. 31 He was seen for many days by those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are His witnesses to the people. 32 And we declare to you glad tidings that promise which was made to the fathers. 33 God has fulfilled this for us their children, in that He has raised up Jesus. As it is also written in the second Psalm: You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. 34 And that He raised Him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, He has spoken thus: I will give you the sure mercies of David. 35 Therefore He also says in another Psalm: You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption. 36 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw corruption; 37 but He whom God raised up saw no corruption. Paul preaches the resurrected Jesus. But God: These are wonderful words. God was greater than man s sin and rebellion, and Jesus rose from the grave, winning over sin and death. 38 Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through this Man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins; 39 and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses. 40 Beware therefore, lest what has been spoken in the prophets come upon you: 41 Behold, you despisers, Marvel and perish! For I work a work in your days, A work which you will by no means believe, Though one were to declare it to you. Through this Man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins : The promise is that, because of who Jesus is and what He did for us, forgiveness is offered to us freely in Jesus. We may be justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. ( Ephesians 2:8 9 ) Forgiveness takes care of the debt of sin, but justification puts a positive credit on our account before God. Christianity is not merely about values or morals or principles. It is not merely about the benefits of belonging to a church. Authentic Christianity is about this man Jesus. 3 of 7

The Authentic Mission of the church is not to give religious advice. The Authentic Mission of the church was to proclaim a message. Advice is counsel about something you have to do; the outcome depends upon you following the advice. News is a report about something that has happened. There s nothing for you to do about it.it s already been done for you and all you can do is respond to it. Every other religion sends military advisers to people. Authentic Mission is just this: By the testimony of our redeemed lives and with loving and clear words you and I, WE are to introduce men and women to this man Jesus. We are to tell them all that this man has done for them and what it looks like to live in light of the victory He has won for them over sin and death! They are left to respond to who this man is and what this man has done to save them! Good news, not good advice. QUOTE: Tim Keller...If we look to some created thing to give us the meaning, hope and happiness that only God himself can give, it will eventually fail to deliver and break our hearts. 42 So when the Jews went out of the synagogue, the Gentiles begged that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath. 43 Now when the congregation had broken up, many of the Jews and devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God. Both Jews and Gentiles at the synagogue responded positively, yet Luke noted an even greater response from the Gentiles present. Paul and Barnabas persuaded them to continue in the grace of God. This means they had already started to trust in the grace of God. Continuing in grace is as important as beginning in grace; we must never leave it as the basic principle of our relationship with God. 44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God. 45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy; and contradicting and blaspheming, they opposed the things spoken by Paul. No news, new news, and good news from the Word of God The whole city came together to hear the word of God ( Acts 13:44 ) Paul and Barnabas spoke the word of God to them first ( Acts 13:46 ) The Gentiles responded to the word of the Lord ( Acts 13:48 ) The word of the Lord spread through the region ( Acts 13:49 ) 46 Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said, It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; but since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, 4 of 7

we turn to the Gentiles. 47 For so the Lord has commanded us: I have set you as a light to the Gentiles, That you should be for salvation to the ends of the earth. They had wonderful zeal for the things of God. They wouldn t let this challenge go unanswered, because they really believed the truth about Jesus. 48 Now when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. And as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed. The Gentiles responded to Paul s invitation with enthusiastic belief, learning with joy that God does not hate Gentiles, but offered them salvation in Jesus gave value, worth, weight, to the WOG 49 And the word of the Lord was being spread throughout all the region. 50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and prominent women and the chief men of the city, raised up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region. Wherever there is revival, there will be oppositionl. Jewish opposition was strong enough to force Paul and Barnabas to leave the area. 51 But they shook off the dust from their feet against them, and came to Iconium. 52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit. Being filled with joy and being filled with the Holy Spirit go together. Paul and Barnabas had joy that contradicted their circumstances. Resurrection Paul s first recorded Sermon filled with the resurrection. Take a look at how the resurrection was preached and believed in the early church, showing us how it ought to be preached and believed today. Preached as fact and preached as fulfillment. Resurrection was preached and believed as a fact the early church didn t preach the resurrection as a metaphor, a symbolic story, or fable. The resurrection was preached as a hard, inconvenient, paradigm shifting, impossible to dismiss fact. We don t like facts that contradict what we believe to be true, but there it is so I have to believe it or choose to believe a lie. Inconvenient and irritating. Think about Paul he hated Christianity law fulfilled no need for a temple no need for sacrifice. Then he was confronted by the resurrected Lord fact foiled his belief. 5 of 7

Two beliefs of the Jews at the time would reject Christ. God would not become a man. The resurrection was for the future, not now, when the rest of the world had not changed yet. The first century Jews would be extremely skeptical, it would take something huge to convince them that Jesus was God in the flesh. The messiah. Look at Paul something major had to happen to convince them. Seeing the resurrected Lord. Christianity is the most irritating of all faiths. How do most people choose a faith, a belief system, a world view? They pick what they like, what they feel is good for them. When people say They could never be a Christian. if you ask why, most will say Because I don t like. I reject that, i find it offensive. So you are saying, since you don t like that, then Jesus Christ could not have been raised from the dead. Paul was more offended by Christianity than you are, he killed Christians. He didn t choose Christianity because he like it. He decided it was true because Jesus Christ was raised from the dead. You are not being honest with yourself, if you refuse to investigate, find out for yourself about the resurrection, because there is something you don t like about Christianity. If your religion is made up only of things that you like, it s just a photocopy of you, how can it make you better than you are, there is no power to transform, if there is no conflict. The resurrection was preached as a fulfillment. The promises of the OT, was not a future of darkness, but of brightness, light, and glory. How did Christianity triumph in the Greco Roman classical culture beliefs. Geniuses like Plato and Aristotle, Socrates, Pythagoras The resurrection, there was nothing like it the resurrection fulfills our longing for the future being better HOPE better than anything that has ever been proposed. The resurrection proves that the future is there, personal, certain, and is unimaginably wonderful. Future is there belief die and that is it or an afterworld that is nebulous Future is personal Many beliefs non existence or existence non personal future means there is no love there. To have love, you ve got to be a person. The main thing that makes people happy in this life is live. One of the deepest desires of the human heart is that we have loving relationships and that we don t lose them. 6 of 7

Death without resurrection is the enemy of love. Death comes in an tramples on the meaning and purpose of life. If we say that when we die, that is it. We should be terrified of death, because it is the end of love. When the main thing that give meaning to live, that makes us happy, it taken away by death, how could you not be afraid of death. There is only one way, to have the hope of resurrection. The bible, God, declares in the resurrection you will still be you, they will still be them. Future is certain what good does it matter if there is an awesome future, but you are not sure if you are part of it. Through Jesus the forgiveness of sins and justification is given as a gift. He died for you and me resurrection is a proof. Receipt is proof of payment, free to come and go as you please. We all struggle with things we ve done to others, especially people we love. Things we wish we could forget, but can t. With such knowledge, how can we be sure that we are accepted, adopted, and adored by god? How can we know that the good future is for us. Jesus Christ resurrection is receipt proof, that our penalty is paid for. Future is unimaginably wonderful Edgar Allen Poe Raven Nevermore irreversibility of life youth is gone irreversibility, health failing (aging) irreversibility irreversibility of life is like death in the midst of life. The resurrection says NO to nevermore. The resurrection is the restoration of what you have lost you get it back get your body back (the one you wished you always had) dance, hug, sing, etc.. you get the life you always wanted but never had, not only a new body, but you get this world back, brand new, functioning perfectly without death, disease, disaster.. Love between God and humans, humans and humans unhindered. The resurrection is the reversal of irreversibility. You should want to believe in this, because this is what you were made for. The only Hope of a cure for you and this creation is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Resurrection is such a great and good gift cause us to come to repentance lead to revival, the other option is rejection and rebellion and ruin. 7 of 7
